If it "worked" in 1.7 with default encrypt on, it wasn't meant like that,
so that's why there's no mention in changelog ;-)

My fault!
But as I said before, encrypt by default "on" worked before v1.7.2 and
there is nothing mentioned about this in the changelog.

Now everything is fine and let's hope that not too many people were
using my set of preferences and are having the same problem right now.

I think I found my "mistake".

In Account Settings --> OpenPGP Security I have to DEactivate "Encrypt
messages by default"

Before v1.7.2. the logic must have been different because my desired
behavior could be achieved with this option enabled.

As a last wish:
What are the recommended settings for

When trying your 2 cases and using Thunderbird 31 with enigmail 1.7.2, I just
get a request for passphrase because normally I have all emails signed. If I
force non-signing for emails sent out according to your 2 cases, then the emails

For example I experience the same behavior when I send this mail to the

The only rule I have is not related to this recipient (nor to the

Strange.
Does it even happen if the person without encryption
is the only one recipient?
Because it is enough to have just one rule that forces encryption.
If that's the case, remove the rule.

Hi Nico,

thank you for your advice. Unfortunately your recommended settings don't
work for me.

What I just now tested:

1

- Tab sending:
  Turn on convenience mode
- Tab Key selection:
Turn on the first three items
  (all except "always manually")

Result: When sending mail to person who doesn't use encryption -->
Dialog "Enigmail Key Selection" pops up.

2
- Tab sending:
  Turn on convenience mode
- Tab Key selection:
Turn on the first two items

Result: When sending mail to person who doesn't use encryption -->
Dialog "Enigmail Key Selection" pops up.

Can somebody else confirm this with 1.7.2 or am I the only one with
problems here?

Re: [Enigmail] [ANN] Enigmail v1.7.2 Available

Hi Alexander,

what you want should be easy to reach:
- Tab sending:
  Turn on convenience mode
- Tab Key selection:
Turn on the first three items
  (all except "always manually")

Then whenever keys for all recipients exist,
the email automatically gets encrypted
(unless recipient rules say not to do so).

All other emails are not automatically encrypted
(unless recipient rules force encryption).

If rules force encryption or you explicitly
forces it (by clicking on the key symbol)
and keys are missing, the key selection dialog will pop-up
to give you the ability to choose the missing keys
(or disable sending/encryption).

Hope this helps
 Nico

Hm, I'm really confused right now.

What I want: After hitting "Send" I don't want to see any further dialog
for missing keys etc... just encrypt it or don't encrypt it.

And you say you achieve this behavior by setting "Confirm before
sending" to "Always"?! That would really astonish me?!
For me it's: "Never"

Also setting "Key Selection" to "Manually if Keys are Missing" is not
what I want.

Either we both talk about two different things or something really weird
is happening for me?!

Good news!

Works fine with Thunderbird 32.0b1 / Win7 x64 Pro SP1.
All Enigmail settings after update to 1.7.2 are identical to those of
before update.

P.S.
Unfortunately, my update of ja-JP translation seems to be too late for

Hi Alexander,

I use the attached settings and installing 1.7.2 did not change any settings.
I'll try to reproduce this by creating a new profile and installing 1.6, 1.7
and 1.7.2 in that order. How were your prefs in 1.6?

Yes, I do the same. Indeed, I think, that's what most people want/should set.
Attached are my settings. With them, I think you get what you describe above
or did I miss something?

I think I never tried to send a message with attached images (tiny!) to the
list. I don't know whether they are stripped or not, we'll see. If so, I'll
put them on my website for a while and send links.

The update overwrote my preferences again and activated the "convenient
encryption settings" without a warning.

Furthermore my preferences were
1. enrypt if I have a public key for the recipient (or a rule) and
2. don't encrypt if 1 isn't true
without the "Enigmail Key Selection" window. I did this by deactivating
"Key Selection: Manually if Keys are Missing".

Is this still possible? At least it doesn't work the same way as with
version 1.7.
