for reference for people following this only via the mailing list
archive, the solution Patrick mentions is the following:

It looks like there is a problem with the pEp engine. The easiest
solution is to go to menu Enigmail/pEp > Preferences and switch to
the "Compatibility" tab. Select the option "Force using S/MIME and
Enigmail"

AKAIK, it's part of the mailmain settings that you can't configure. I
cannot change it therefore.

Yes, I intentionally copy-pasted my password to let everyone read it.
Maybe you could configure your mailing system to not send passwords in
plain text? If I remember correctly I had to type password confirmation
before registration, so what's the point of reminding me my password (I
guess it's violation of a couple of security rules)?

It's not easy to help you as the description of your problem is quite
vague. Here a few questions:

- Do you have any other addons installed apart from Enigmail?
- On what Operating System are you?
- Did sending encrypted mails ever work?
