  enema next week.

You're kidding, right? You do know what enema means? I think raster
presented that option out of frustration, and other people just voted
on it for a quick laugh. Renaming a library to enema will potentially
stop third-party (non oss) people from using it. Just like it's
stopping the spreading of GIMP (you know, latex sex slave).

The reason for the rename in the first place is silly, since the
conflicting project already renamed itself years ago. Oh, sure some
outdated distros (I saw a whole one listed) still use the old name,
whoop-de-doo. So instead of asking the one (yes, probably more) old
distribution to have their package use the correct name, you're asking
several (I know of several with EFL packages for eina) to rename their
packages.

Needs of the many, anyone?

sure, but not needed for a 1.0.0 :)

I agree for the alpha and beta releases, but it would be really nice
to have unit tests for the final 1.0.0 release. It can help catch
compatibility issues much earlier in the process.

Unit tests should be used throughout the process to catch issues *before* you

Exactly. --prefix doesn't really make sense for modules. They either

As I already said it before, calling ./configure with no --prefix will
 use this path.
You don't need it. Moreover the other modules doesn't take the --prefix=/usr
option. They override it and goes in enlightenment's module dir anyway.
If you run the configure with --prefix=/tmp they go in
 /usr/lib/enlightenment/module
The only flag able to change that is --enable-homedir-install which is also
 supported in the notification module.

The notification module, and probably any other module, works from anywhere.
So even installed in /foo/bar, the only thing required to make them work
 is to add
/foo/bar in the list of modules search path.

All I did is enable the usual behaviour of the --prefix option in this
 module. But
since it seems to trouble a lot of people that this flag actually do
 it's job. I can
also remove the option and end all this.

Sorry, I must have misunderstood the earlier post about --prefix, then.
I will remove all --prefix uses from our module build process.

Thanks! :)

Morlenxus pointed me than the --prefix was ignored, and I thought that it
might be a handful option for package maintainers (or people with
 various reasons).

I think package maintainers would like modules to install in a location
where e finds it, so I don't really think we should use --prefix. At
least since modules don't use --prefix like normal apps do. For most
 users it isn't logical that ./configure --prefix=/usr in 'e_modules'
 wont work with ./configure --prefix=/usr in 'e'.

 Maybe a --set-module-installation-dir option?

 Sebastian

Well, before the great autofoo changes, this used to work. If you passed
in a prefix (eg: same prefix as E) it would install to the module
directory under E. If you did not pass a prefix, then it installed to
the user's home directory (under ~/.e/e/modules) which is a place that E
 also checks.

For now I've modified the e_module-notification package to specify
--prefix=/usr/lib/enlightenment/modules. I will remove that once this
is fixed (or add it to all other modules if they are changed).

This is wrong and causes other problems. Consider, for example,
 /usr/lib64.

 Michael

My x86_64 box also installs to /usr/lib. Example, e_module-echo installs to /
usr/lib/enlightenment/modules/echo/linux-gnu-x86_64.

It works for me, so what is the better method you propose? The other

Nah. Doesn't work like that ATM :/ But it's possible to make
 'e_modules=/dir ./configure' work. If that's a good solution, I will fix
it (if I get the time...)

As long as it is standard across all the modules and documented, any way you

 Nah.

It didn't work very well, as we want all module data in the module dir.
Which includes locale files etc. With the old approach locale info went in
standard dirs, and the module ended in the right dir because it assumed
what e's module dir was. So if the module dir changed, we had to update
 all modules.

But, can't people just do 'e_module=/dir make install' and the module will
 install wherever you want?

If that's the proper method then I will change our packages to use
that. ;) Will all e_module packages support e_module=dir?

 Greets folks,

Ok, I know, the subject makes this look like a Cedega problem. However,
I only ever have problems if I'm using E17 as my WM and I've tried it
under Gnome, KDE and Failsafe modes, ergo I'm really having to believe
it's E. As I'm not getting any stack traces or anything from this let
 me describe what I'm seeing.

 First, here's the system configuration:

 OS: Fedora Core 6
Graphics: nVidia Corporation GeForce 7900 GT (dual head card)
Graphics Driver: nVidia binary driver rev: 1.0.9629 built as a DKMS
module packaged by FreshRPMS / RPMForge.
 E17: enlightenment-0.16.999.036-1.20061107cvs from Didier's RPM repo
 (yesterday)
 Cedega: 5.2.3 / 5.2.7 (interface / engine)

At present moment I only have the following games installed under
Cedega: Half-Life2 and World of Warcraft (run using opengl)
snip

OS: Source Mage GNU/Linux
Graphics: nVidia NV31 GeForce FX 5600 rev A1
Graphics driver: nVidia binary driver v1.0-9629 built from nVidia's
source tarball
E17: Latest from CVS
Cedega: 5.2.7

World of Warcraft, Warcraft III, Civilization IV, and others all run
fine on E17 through Cedega for me. The problem is not E17.

The OpenGL problem for WoW sounds like you didn't follow the directions
when setting it up. Not only do you have to pass '-opengl' as a flag to
Cedega, but you need to modify your WTF/Config.wtf to have:
  set gxAPI opengl
  set gxColorBits 24
  set gxDepthBits 24

As for Half-Life 2, I don't have that game, but Steam and Counter-Strike
1.6 work fine.

The rest of DR17 have been compiling and running fine. I have the latest
stable imlib installed:

$ gaze version imlib2 imlib2_loaders
Grimoire Section Spell Grimoire Version Installed Version

The error seems to come from sections of imlib surrounded by #ifndef
X_DISPLAY_MISSING and #endif. I am currently in X as a user
(sandalle), but compiling as root. Does e17setroot/imlib /require/
access to the X server during certain compilations?

the problem is - to handle the user password is a massive pain in the
arse. you need to use PAM or getpwent() and this presents some serious
problems. what if your user account details live in an ldap db? sure - pam
wraps this and handles it, but now we bind ourselves to pam - which is a
bit problematic to use in a portable way even between linux distributions.

also note - this is no worse than leaving your desktop unlocked and someone
walking by and going rm -rf ~/* in a terminal. if you walk away from your
machine and leave it unlocked - it's fair game for ANYTHING. someone
locking it with a pw u don't know is fairly harmless compared to other
things they can do.

Shouldn't desklock just use xscreensaver then? That would take care of
all the authentication (unix, PAM, KRB5, etc.) for us as well as
providing various backgrounds (as mentioned in the other thread)
through the screensavers. It'd also save duplicating a lot of work,
IMO.

u can bind this to a key and exec xscreensaver to lock already - u have been
able to do that ever since. e's lock is separate and independent of
xscreensaver.

I thought DeskLock was just wanting to lock the screen for you, which
is what xscreensaver does well already, that is why I mentioned it.
One could have DeskLock optionally depend on xscreensaver for the
system user accounts (LDAP, unix, etc.) is what I was trying to say,
rather than having to reinvent the wheel.

a) on which screen(s) to have a login box.
b) or to place it automatically in the middle screen.
c) maybe something else.

However, I do not know why, yet, the mouse pointer is tripled in your

Anyway, now I'm just working on theming options for desklock. After I
finish this, I will check what can be done with login box.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but shouldn't the login box show up on
whichever screen is 'active' not not an arbitrary screen (e.g. I lock
the display on screen #6, then press a key to let it know I'd like to
use it again, if the login box is set for screen #1 I'd have to know
that and change to that screen).

Feel free to correct me if I missed the boat. :)

OK people

It seems CVS issues have been getting worse of late - SF.NET is being more
overloaded than ever, and thinktux needs to go down soon enough. We need to
solve this. Now This isn't edict, or guaranteed to happen, but it's an IDEA
open for discussion.

snip

Now if enough users are willing to donate something - like $20 or $50 here and
there we can afford such a machine and thus bring CVS access and source access
up to top level standards.

I'd be willing to do $20, $50 at most if it's needed.

This mail is meant to do 3 things.

1. Consider if this is a sane option at all (IMHO with a little work it is and
opens up lots of future possibilities).

Definately as I grab e17 only via CVS. ;)

2. If so - what box do we really need? I am thinking something like:
dual opteron/xeon or amd64 (like 2 phsical cpu's) and maybe get 2x dual core
cpu's - but don't get the expensive ones - midrange (to handle the cvs load) eg
amd64 3800's (2ghz dual core amd64 - 2 of these cpu's (so 4 cores total)), 1GB
ram minimum - likely 2-4 GB maybe for lots of disk cache, a 2u box/case and a
raid drive setup (disks go bad - setup at least raid mirroring with striped
reads doubling our read rates, and a failure is no big deal other than needing
to send out a replacement), with removable drive bays because drives go bad -
make life easy on the hosters. If a drive goes bad - limp along without backup
for a week or 2, get new drive, insert fixed. Otherwise the rest is pretty
standard (100mbit or gigabit ethernet - irrelevant which really) etc. etc. this
can of course all be discussed as to what people think is a good value for
money box that meets our needs.

Sounds good, though you may want to have more RAM and a faster/sturdy NIC,
IMO.

3. Are people willing to donate enough $ to make it happen?

Yep!

So what do you guys think?

Perhaps also look into other SCMs (e.g. svn, svk, arch, bzr, git,
etc.) which may have a lesser load/problems. SVN is the 'natural'
choice as it's a 'modernized' CVS. Most of these SCMs have a
CVS-$SCM gateway/coverter for those who don't want to convert or so
you can use both CVS and $SCM at the same time while you figure out
which you'd like.

Me again. :) It appears, when I got this working, that I installed the
0.0.14 version, not 0.0.19 ;). After removing the two copies I had
installed v0.0.19 and, this time making sure of it, I get this error
upon loading:

There was an error loading module named: evolume
The full path to this module is: evolume/linux-gnu-i686/module.so
The error reported was: libemixer.so.0: cannot open shared object

I have no such file libemixer.so.0 on my machine, but the compile log
for evolume 0.0.19 mentions compiling libemixer.so, but does not seem
to install it.

Shouldn't pre-increment (e.g. ++dst) be used instead of post-increment
(e.g. dst++) as the post-increment in C, IIRC, requires the object to
be copied, incremented, and then reassigned, whereas the pre-increment
just increments without all the copying and reassigning.

It shouldn't matter how old the CVS checkout is; CVS should update the

Packages should never install to ~ ($HOME) and E modules are supposed
to go in /usr/lib/enlightenment/modules AFAIK (perhaps modules_extra,
I'm not sure what the difference is between modules/ and
modules_extra/).

Using:
  ./configure --prefix=/usr \
  --sysconfdir=/etc \
   --localstatedir=/var \
  --mandir=/usr/share/man \
 --infodir=/usr/share/info
  make
  make install

I get that error. I also removed
~/.e/e/config/default/module.evolume.cfg before trying to run:

$ enlightenment_remote -module-load evolume

Which then pops up the error.

listed on http://get-e.org/Resources/Modules/) use versioned tarballs
(e.g. http://get-e.org/Resources/Modules/_files/mount-0.0.3.tar.gz
instead of http://get-e.org/Resources/Modules/_files/mount.tar.gz)?
That would make it easier for packagers (at least me ;)) to make
packages which don't break when a tarball is updated without the
package being updated. It also makes our source mirrors much happier.

Thank you,

You always need to add modules by 'enlightenment_remote -module-load' to make
them appear in the module list. Only the modules in the e src tree are
automatically loaded with a new config. And it will continue to be that way.

Won't that just load it for the user running `make load`? That won't
work too well for a distribution package. ;)

Probably need to run:
enlightenment_remote -module-load evolume
enlightenment_remote -module-enable evolume

That did it, thanks. :) Why do I have to do it for evolume (if you
know), but not other modules (at least the ones from the e_modules
package)?

please wait for HB release.
this event will be published on www.get-e.org

Blake pointed out I probably needed `enlightenment_remote -module-load
evolume`, which add evolume to my Modules list. Does the HB release
fix it so I no longer need to do that?
