[E-devel] E16 distribution split

2004-03-04 Thread Kim Woelders
Hi,

I have made a test with splitting up the E16 distribution.

I rearranged the directories:

The WM, dox, eesh, and epp, mostly in the usual places
e16/e
e16/e/config (was e16/e/src/themes/config)
e16/e/dox
e16/e/eesh
...
e16/e/src
Moved the dox data, i.e. the documentation pages to
e16/edox-data
e16/edox-data/E-docs
Moved the themes to
e16/ethemes/BlueSteel
  containing BlueSteel.etheme* autogen.sh configure.in ...
e16/ethemes/BrushedMetal-Tigert
  containing BrushedMetal-Tigert.etheme* autogen.sh configure.in ...
e16/ethemes/Ganymede
  containing Ganymede.etheme* autogen.sh configure.in ...
e16/ethemes/ShinyMetal
  containing ShinyMetal.etheme* autogen.sh configure.in ...
We had
11.9 Mbyte enlightenment-0.16.7.tar.gz
The new packages are
 1.6 Mbyte enlightenment-0.16.7.tar.gz (binaries are < 1 Mbyte)
 2.1 Mbyte edox-docs-0.16.7.tar.gz

 0.7 Mbyte etheme-BlueSteel-0.16-1.tar.gz
 3.9 Mbyte etheme-BrushedMetal-Tigert-0.16-1.tar.gz
 2.5 Mbyte etheme-Ganymede-0.16-1.tar.gz
 1.2 Mbyte etheme-ShinyMetal-0.16-1.tar.gz
I like this a lot better than the old monolithic 12M one :)

Is there any reason not to go ahead and do this?
Is there a better way (names, directory layout, ...)?
Comments?
/Kim

Maybe this can be called enlightenment-base, as it does not include
docs etc.

Does the enlightenment-0.16.7.tar.gz package work, after compilation,
or should there be a theme installed in the system ?

If a theme is a must to run, then I guess it would be better to include
the smallest (in size) theme in the base/main package, just to let
people see it work.

i dont know how other people feel but there any chance we could change 'dox'
to 'edox' ?
i had to do so in Gentoo due to the fact it was clobbering the dox package,

E had "dox" long before this other thing ever existed. It should have
to change *its* name, not the other way around.

I think we could be a bit pragmatic about the name of a program that is
probably never ever called explicitly.

Actually, I think it should be moved to $EROOT/bin/ (e.g.
/usr/share/enlightenment/bin/) together with epp. Then it wouldn't have
to be renamed.

The most annoying thing about renaming or moving dox is that the epplets
package would have to be updated too.

generally putting arch-specific binary data in /usr/share is frowned upon ...
moving it to /usr/lib/enlightenment/ would be the standard alternative, but
seems overkill if it's the only thing in there ...

Binaries should not be in /usr/share. That's what /usr/libexec is
for.

libexec, not lib.

For the last month or so things have been rearranged in CVS as outlined
above (with the exception that dox was renamed to edox).
I haven't deleted the theme/dox stuff from the old locations yet, so it
is still quite easy to revert to the old layout.
It is my impression that there are no strong objections against the
change, so now I'd like to nail it down and remove the stuff from the
old locations.

Any reasons not to?

Sounds great Kim. I haven't check, have the Makefiles been updated to
make dist without all the cruft?
And are you planning a pre- release of 16.7 or just going to drop the
final? I'm hoping I can get some ports
ready as near to the release date as I can. I've already done some
testing on Solaris but run into some problems.
I'm hoping to straighten those out and possibly even get an IRIX port
together.

Great work Kim!

I definitively don't want to go for one final 16.7. I'm sure some pre's
