I read a message by Ben Rockwood [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 2004-03-14 11:25 Please refer to the following news post on the Enlightenment.org website in Sept: After months of restraint heres the big update as to where E is and is going. Enlightenment DR17, the window manager currently in e17 CVS, is dead. As was mentioned in the State of E address awhile back the current WM code needs a complete rewrite, and thus the current code is nothing but a test platform. There is currently no publicly available WM code for DR17, but the initial CVS commit will be coming in the next month or two. Many lessons were learned from the WM code that currently exists in CVS, namely that even in CVS we stretched the limits of what Ebits could do. This prompted Raster several months ago to scrap it and start work on Edje. Edje is essentially Ebits2 in concept, but is drastically different from the original Ebits implementation. Edje uses EET instead of EDB which Ebits uses, and truly does what Ebits hoped to do: abstract completely an applications interface from its code base. Edje theming doesn't just put a new image in place of the default. It actually can completely change the feel of the user interface, rather than just its appearance. On top of this Edje supports animation! This means that DR17 will not be just another static looking window manager, it will have smooth animations and effects -- from simple fades and bounces to window borders that consist of swirling colors. We do not any longer support the E module in e17 CVS. In fact, we never supported it. You can also note the same thing from the header of the E17 page on cuddletech: WARNING WARNING!!!: This Page is HISTORICAL! DR17 as you see it here does not work, or build. It is being completely rewritten to be bigger and better than anything you see here. So look, and enjoy, but don't plan on using it. So he mean on september DR 17 people starts to re-write? Is it what Brooks talked about build it to throw it away? I think any reasonably large project like E will likely take more than one year to build test, so DR17 (sorry is there a roadmap publicly available?) is not likely to come out this year? Oh no that will be 6 years to wait totally, if not any longer .. There is at least one Japanese developper on the team, whose screen name is Rasterman. He reads this list as well I believe. So, patience my friend, E17 will come out, sooner or later. I have been waiting for almost 5 years for it to come out, and I'm happy enough seeing the progress made with the other applications like Evidence and Entrance. Concerning the China firewall, can you access personal webpages? I'd be happy to copy some of the news from E on my website from time to time, if you and other chinese E-Users can access it. What is your website address? I think if Enlightenment.org consists of mostly static pages, you can mirror it, or you can make a mirror site like enlightenment.cn (this domain is not registered, I checked. I can register it.) I'll make a mirror of it on my homepage, assuming of course the maintainers of the site don't have an objection. It's http://membres.lycos.fr/borkkash/ I'll just put a new directory in it, 'cuz I use it mainly to put all my 3D creations up. if you give me 24 hours I'll have all the news section up, and then if you want more you can email to me personally. I'll send you the new link when it's up. maybe a link from a webpage you can access to one that's supposedly blocked will work, no? I'll add one on my mainpage ASAP and you can try that too. --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: IBM Linux Tutorials Free Linux tutorial presented by Daniel Robbins, President and CEO of GenToo technologies. Falling off-topic: You may have a hard time registering Enlightenment.cn in China. Enlightenment is not only a Buddhist term, it carries some more political charge. That's why I think China blocks enlightenment.org. It's not a country that would want their people enlightened (they even try to keep Hong Kong down! Not that that really seems to work here...), and their track record on political issues is not exactly great. Then they probably block websites more on name/topic/keyword than actual content, as that saves them a lot of work. So that's the reason: enlightenment is a Buddhist term? DAMN IT. I have had it enough. So it is obviously impossible to register that domain. Just some thoughts from a concerned expat in Hong Kong. Wouter. (please no political discussions here, that's not what this group is for. I stretched the topic far enough.) So let us stop here. Do you know sourceforge was blocked once upon a time? [e-users] how is E going on?
Sorry the question sounds silly. I have been using Enlightenment for one year, it is my favorite. Only that I am in China, and the enlightenment.org website is unreachable from within the so called China firewall. I believe enlightenment.org does not contain political stuff; I think it is excluded by mistake. Anyway I get no way to know about news and recent activities of enlightenment. Recently someone told me enlightenment has mailing lists on sourceforge, so I hurried subscribed it. I just wish to know how is the development going. Enlightenment has no newer version for quite some time, too slow comparing to other famouse opensouce projects. I heard E17 is dead, but I'm technique newbie, I read the dead announcement but I don't really get it. Is E17 dead because there is something even better than E17 will come out? When can I experience complex animiation on enlightenment, like MAC OS X users have? I have been using some eppletes from FreeBSD port tree, the epplets are ages old, and the port maintainer said please send your patches to the *port maintainer*. I acutally feel surprised on this, doesn't enlightenment team accept patches from outside like apache/linux do? And is there any Chinese/Japanese people in the group? I never managed to run Enlightenment with Chinese window titles successfully, will the next version of E have better Chinese support? Thank you. --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: IBM Linux Tutorials Free Linux tutorial presented by Daniel Robbins, President and CEO of GenToo technologies.
