Hello Todd,

you can use security.enterprise_roots.enabled to use the system
certificate store in windows since FF49.
See https://wiki.mozilla.org/CA:AddRootToFirefox.

plan to switch away from that database?  Maybe use the
system keystore?  I’d like to use an auth cert with firefox,
but can’t if its not secured. Any other suggestions are
appreciated.  Thank you.

Hello Marc,

did you try to set browser.fixup.dns_first_for_single_words to true.
This should prevent FF from searching "localsite" in google.

Subject: [Mozilla Enterprise] ESR 52.5 and Intranet hosts

I know this issue has been brought up before, and I'd have to see if there is a bug for it or not.

Our default homepage is http://hostname, as opposed to http://hostname.company.tld. In other words, it's an Intranet site.

Firefox does not like Intranet sites. In looking at the code, there is a preference to allow Intranet host lookups, but according to the code, that only works for secure sites (HTTPS).

We also use PAC files.

I have to go back and verify, because I'm not sure, but in ESR 38 and/or 45, the Intranet somehow seemed to work. Now that I'm testing ESR 52, specifically 52.5, it won't work at all. In fact, the sites I'm getting with the appended "www" and ".com" are pretty nasty, so this is a big problem, and it's preventing me from releasing a new browser to my customers.

Anyone have any experience getting this to work? Anyone else seeing this issue?

Thank you,
Marc

I think especially because of the recommendation to use 52ESR in the

appears that there is a flaw somewhere : either they were misdirected

Is it possible for list admins to investigate the problem ? How these
people get subscribed here ? Is it possible that there's a bot

I believe the 'problem' is the web page at:

  https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/

This is the page that most people will arrive at when searching for info
about the ESR release

Unfortunately, the terminology on that page 'implies' that you need to
sign up to this list before doing anything else ... i.e. using the term
'Step' normally means you need to complete 'Step 1' (sign up to the
list) before proceeding to 'Step 2' (download ESR)

I definitely got that impression when I was looking for info about ESR
over 5 years ago (although I wanted to sign up!) - so I'm not surprised
so many people join this list 'by mistake'

My suggestion would be to get that page changed and replace the 'Step 1'
and 'Step 2' paragraphs with something like:

* Review our handy FAQ about Firefox ESR [link]

* Download Firefox ESR [link]

* Join the Enterprise Working Group (EWG) mailing list [link] to discuss
deploying and configuring Firefox ESR with other community members and
receive regular communications regarding product updates and support

i.e. no mention of 'Steps' or 'strongly encouraging' list membership :-)

My guess is that those just interested in finding out about basics of
ESR or just wanting to download it, will have followed the FAQ or
download links and left the page so never get to the mail list link ...
i.e. only those that _really_ want to sign up will follow the list link

  You are probably right.
I will make sure we address that soon. It is surprising to have potential sysadmin unaware of
the (un)subscription process of a mailman mailing list.

Thanks,
Sylvestre

Re: [Mozilla Enterprise] interdependency between e10s and localfilelinks or local html files

2017-08-29 Thread Sebastian Metzger

Hello everybody,

sorry for the delay, but I wanted to give you an update to our e10s
problem at least.
Meanwhile we found out, that not only the localfilelinks, altough
local html files (on filesystem not on server) do not work
correctly.
When opening a html file on a local drive ff shows

Sadly, I'm not able to reproduce the issue by simply setting
extensions.e10sBlockedByAddons set to false, because at some
installations local html files altough work with e10s enabled too.
Otherwise there are many installations with problems when e10s is
enabled in every case until now, it worked to set
extensions.e10sBlockedByAddons to true.
It seems that there could be an interdependency between e10s and our
problems, but it seems that simply activating e10s is not the only
condition to be considered. Maybee there is only some special
constellation in which it doesn't work.
Best regards

Sometimes the issue is during the session. There is a

Tried to change Firefox proxy definition to

Do you use SSL inspection on your Checkpoint

is the easiest way to test (empty cache is important).

Hello Rob,

we seem to have a simliar problem. But we assume it is not ff
specific and it doesn't matter how the proxy-config in ff was
set - directly or trough IE setting.

  We also use Checkpoint.
The "slow" internet problems seems to only affect
http-requests which are redirected to https.
E.g. you type http://google.de and google
  redirects to
  https://www.google.de
The problem only occurs first time after the client boots and
is therefore hard to identify. It takes up to 20secs until
  page shows up.

I did a wireshark recording and found some strange traffic.
But I'm not a specialist in reading such logs. ;-)

Our Checkpoint admins couldn't find anything until now.

Re: [Mozilla Enterprise] Browsing slow using System Proxy

2017-04-19 Thread Sebastian Metzger

Hello Rob,

we seem to have a simliar problem. But we assume it is not ff
specific and it doesn't matter how the proxy-config in ff was set -
directly or trough IE setting.

We also use Checkpoint.
The "slow" internet problems seems to only affect http-requests
which are redirected to https.
E.g. you type http://google.de and google redirects to
https://www.google.de
The problem only occurs first time after the client boots and is
therefore hard to identify. It takes up to 20secs until page shows
up.

I did a wireshark recording and found some strange traffic. But I'm
not a specialist in reading such logs. ;-)

Our Checkpoint admins couldn't find anything until now.
    Best regards

  Hi Guys,

I have been informed of a problem within our environment
whereby if Firefox (currently ESR 45.6), is set to use
System Proxy then browsing is slow, but if you set the proxy
server/exceptions manually then it's fine.

Proxy server and exceptions are controlled in IE via GPO

This is a strange one as it doesn’t happen for everyone.
We have a network team who manage the Checkpoint Proxy
servers and they said it's not their problem. So I’m having
problems explaining this one. Only happens in certain
locations which is why I thought
it was the proxy server. I, for example, am unable to
reproduce this issue.  This has been going on for a number
of weeks evidently but I’ve only just been informed. I asked
what’s changed and in one location a new Proxy server has
been introduced! But it doesn’t
explain other locations issue.

We moved to “System Proxy” settings so we could use a
proxy switcher and then controlled both browsers seamlessly.

Has anyone come across anything similar with poor
performance when using “System Proxy”?

  Thanks
  Rob

Hello Shemaiah,

if you extract the original setup "Firefox Setup 52.0.1esr.exe" you
get setup.exe and core directory.
You can put files into this directory and it will be copied to
%ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Firefox for example.

That Java isn't blocked seems to be correct, because the last Java
entry on https://blocked.cdn.mozilla.net/ is related to 8u76.
Therefore I assume Mozilla don't blocks old java on every new java
release.

I then checked if the last entries are included in the
blocklist.xml.
I can find "Flash Player Plugin 24.0.0.186 to 24.0.0.194" (Feb 23),
but "360 Internet Protection" (Mar 08) seems to be missing.

The included blocklist.xml seems to be older that it should but
newer than the timestamp says?!

Hi,

I don't know a better way today.

I disable about:addons by setting
#addons-page
{display: none !important;}
in userContent.css.

You should also consider disable the addons-entry in the Menubar by
setting
#menu_openAddons
{display: none !important;}
in userChrome.css.

We use both files to hide some entries for the user. But our goal is
not to prohibit any change then more the prevention of undesired
changes by user.

Re: [Mozilla Enterprise] "Certificate chain incomplete" in 45.1.0

2016-06-28 Thread Sebastian Metzger

Hello Zach,

I agree to James. Maybee the 45.2.0 firefoxes had luckily downloaded the
needed intermidiate at the time you tried to open your web page.

Do you know which CA is missing?
Than you could check if this CA is "Builtin Object Token" or a
downloaded "Software Security Module" (not sure about the correct
english name) in 45.2.0.

>Nothing jumps out at me from the main or security release notes as to
>why there should be any difference.
The CAs included in firefox (or more specific in the NSS) are changing
in nearly every release.

But, they are not stated in the normal release notes.

You can track the changes here:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/NSS:Release_Versions

Now, the obvious answer is to tweak the security (already working with

I believe that Firefox will cache intermediate certificates, so if you
visit a correctly-configured HTTPS site that uses the same chain, visits
to a incorrectly-configured site will work.

Re: [Mozilla Enterprise] Extension "could not be verified" warning when installed globally?

2016-06-08 Thread Sebastian Metzger

Hello Pete,

yes, we altough used extracted xpi's in the past. But it seems that
xpi's are required because of the signing.

which version of AdBlockPlus are you using? You said there is a warning
"... could not be verified for use in Firefox."

We use 2.7.2 without problems. This version is signed.

For clarification I paste our reg-keys for enabling extensions without
user-interaction:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions]
"de...@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org"="C:\\Program Files
(x86)\\Mozilla Firefox
45ESR\\browser\\extensions\\de...@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org.xpi"
"marcoagpi...@mail.telepac.pt"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Mozilla Firefox
45ESR\\browser\\extensions\\marcoagpi...@mail.telepac.pt.xpi"
"{d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d}"="C:\\Program Files
(x86)\\Mozilla Firefox
45ESR\\browser\\extensions\\{d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d}.xpi"

This together with user_pref("extensions.autoDisableScopes", 11); seems
to do the job.

Adblock Plus, Chatzilla, Places Maintenance and Zotero are all still

With xpinstall.signatures.required=false, and
extensions.autoDisableScopes=3, all these add-ons are allowed, with the
warning "... could not be verified for use in Firefox. Proceed with

Zotero LibreOffice Integration works perfectly, where as nothing else
does. I am using the most recent version of all the add-ons I have
installed.

Any thoughts gratefully received, thanks

Re: [Mozilla Enterprise] Extension "could not be verified" warning when installed globally?

2016-05-17 Thread Sebastian Metzger

Hello Pete,

I'm not sure if, what you describe is the same problem I had in march.
In march I had the problem that all my extensions, that I install
together wtih ff were disabled by default. Regardless which scopes I
set. They all worked in ff38.

After a comment from Mike that this was changed in FF40, I found an
article by searching for infos about enabling extensions in the last 4
months and stumbled upon an article in the "Archive of obsolete content":

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Archive/Mozilla/Adding_extensions_using_the_Windows_registry

I don't understand why this is marked as archived?
And what to do on non-windows systems?
But it seems to work!

Important: For automatic installations by setting autodisablescopes, the
filename of the xpi should be the id!
If not, extensions can be installed but the autodisablescope doesn't
seems to work.

What should I set it to to allow add-ons to be installed by the admin?

extensions.autoDisableScopes=0 to disable the setting entirely? That
doesn't work, they're still all disabled

extensions.autoDisableScopes=8 to specify somewhere on Windows that has
no meaning, thus leaving the areas I want enabled? That doesn't work either

My guess is that because your sqlite file was already prefilled, it got
migrated to the new format.

If you are explicitly adding the entries, you need to add both.

We are using an old Java Runtime v7 update 7 (product: 1.7.0_07). This

We get an unresponsive plugin warning and nothing else happens.

Hello,

please see https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/40.0/releasenotes/

Therefore Windows is official (!) supported since Firefox 40RR.
Therefore Firefox 45ESR seems to be the first official Firefox ESR
release for windows 10.

In other words when you plan to migrate to windows 10 now, firefox is
already supported!

I don't know exactly but I think before Firefox 40 there were some
problems regarding setting firefox as standard browser.

[Mozilla Enterprise] Disable outbound connections shavar and telemetry

2016-04-13 Thread Sebastian Metzger

Hello,

we try to customize our next ff45.0.2esr to make no outbound connections
over our proxy.
In the past we often saw proxy-login-windows when a background-service
of ff wanted to get into the internet. We then tried to disable the
service or as a workaround set the affected timers to max-value.

This time we only saw outbound connection by using Wireshark.
There is no proxy-login-window opened.
There are two connections made:
- shavar.services.mozilla.com
- incoming.telematry.mozilla.org

The shavar URL can be found in the two configs:
- browser.safebrowsing.provider.mozilla.updateURL
- browser.safebrowsing.provider.mozilla.gethashURL

The telemetry URL in:
- toolkit.telemetry.server

Shavar seems to be a service, which can be used by many other services
in ff, for example the planned TrackingProtection.
Compare https://wiki.mozilla.org/Services/Shavar and
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Services/TrackingProtection/Shavar_Server_-_Testing

I think it's clear to me what telemtry does. But why is he still
uploading? The option that seems to configure this is
toolkit.telemetry.enabled and is false by default.

At the moment the only chance I see is to clear all 3 URLs in the
options named above. Or maybee redirect to localhost or so on.

Or does anyone have a smarter solution? Maybee some simple switch to
turn this off?

Best regards

Re: [Mozilla Enterprise] Security Advisories for Firefox ESR

2016-03-31 Thread Sebastian Metzger

Hello Paul,

I think there are no security updates in 38.7.1, therefore there is no
entry. Compare
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/38.7.1/releasenotes/ with
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/38.7.0/releasenotes/

In 38.7.0 you see the link to "Various security fixes". In 38.7.1 is no
security fix included.

But you're right the security fixes for 45.0 are missing in the esr
list. But not only 45.0, also 38.0 and 31.0, ... are missing.

If you go to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/45.0/releasenotes/
and click on security fixes you come to
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox/#firefox45
instead of
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox-esr/

It seems that you can find the first ESR security fixes in this list.

We don't wanted to use ff 64bit because of performance considerations.

In our company we have Linux and windows clients.
The used linux-distro is switching to 64bit. Because of missing 32bit
multimedia codecs and plugins the linux admins want to use 64bit ff.

We assumed, like Heiko wrote earlier before, that 64bit ff on linux and
windows behaves the same (have NPAPI support) and therefore tried to use
64bit windows ff as well, to minimize differences between our linux and
windows systems.

Because of the missing NPAPI support of the 64bit windows ff we will
stay on 32-bit for now, because we have no "real" reason for switching
to 64bit.
Parallelly we will try to replace all used NPAPI plugins so we are
prepared when NPAPI support is removed from 32bit ff as well.

And maybee we can than switch to 64bit ff on windows.

And generally, why not using 64bit software on a 64bit windows?!
Aside from the special ff case and ms office, there should be no reason
to stay on 32bit software on a 64bit os.

Aditionally we have the middle-term goal to switch from 32bit jre to
64bit jre and this truly because of performance improvements.
At the moment we can't "switch" (we install both) because of the many
java applets that are used and therefore we still need to install 32bit
jre, to get the 32bit jre plugin for firefox. We will also try to
replace this applets.

The problem is to get replacements for all the java applets and all the
firefox plugins. Because we are dependent on many, many different
manufactuers.
We hope that, if NPAPI support is dropped in RR first, many "big
players" will begin to work on replacements and will be ready when NPAPI
is dropped in ESR.

Would it be ok, if I share your info in the enterprise mailing list,

Yes. I didn't see this go by on the enterprise list, but I admit that I

We are still monitoring plugin usage stats, so I don't want to commit to
a final schedule or plan yet. But the current plan we're tracking
against is to have 52/ESR52 be the last release with NPAPI support.

Looking for the changes in

Is a update planned or will 45ESR not updated before 19.04. with the shipping

We planned to publish 45.0.1 (Desktop & ESR) yesterday but, because of external
reasons, we delayed the releases.
Hopefully, both are going to be live today.

I would like to take the opportunity to mention that we care the same about
ESR. ESR 45.1.0 and 45.2.0 will have stability patches.
Critical issues that we find during the 46 cycle will be addressed in ESR 45
too (if the release is impacted too).
Here, 45.0.1esr contains the same fixes as in 45.0.1.

[Mozilla Enterprise] NPAPI "exact" support end - will ESR52 still support NPAPI?

2016-03-19 Thread Sebastian Metzger

Hello,

we testet Firefox 45.0.0ESR in the win64 version the last days.
Because we have the need to use many plugins, especially Java applets
but also some others, and win64 has only limited support for plugins
(compare
https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2015/12/15/firefox-64-bit-for-windows-available/),
we are forced to use 32bit version for now (possibly whole 45ESR branch).

We are aware that Oracle already announced that Plugin Development will
end with Java 9 (compare
https://blogs.oracle.com/java-platform-group/entry/moving_to_a_plugin_free).
We also know that mozilla is planing to stop NPAPI support at "end of
2016", like described in
https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2015/10/08/npapi-plugins-in-firefox/.

But when exactly will the support end?
Will the NPAPI support already end with Firefox 45ESR? Or will Firefox
52ESR still support NPAPI?

We are asking because we are not sure, if all applet providers will
replace there applets with Java-ws or modern webapp-methods like html5,
... soon enough.

We hope that NPAPI support for ESR will end much later than RR.
Elsewhere it will likely break many enterprise installations and will
force even more enterprise customers to use alternative browsers that
still support plugins (even it is for only about a year of waiting for
the applet providers to react).

Re: [Mozilla Enterprise] Firefox 45ESR - what's changed?

2016-03-15 Thread Sebastian Metzger

Hello,

I found an article by searching for infos about enabling extensions in
the last 4 months and stumbled upon an article in the "Archive of
obsolete content":

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Archive/Mozilla/Adding_extensions_using_the_Windows_registry

I don't understand why this is marked as archived?
And what to do on non-windows systems?
But it seems to work!

Important: For automatic installations by setting autodisablescopes, the
filename of the xpi should be the id!
If not, extensions can be installed but the autodisablescope doesn't
seems to work.

Is there an alternative way to distribute addons globally? Visible and

Re: [Mozilla Enterprise] Firefox 38.4.0 disable Sync button and other buttons from menue and home

2015-12-03 Thread Sebastian Metzger

Hello Jürgen,

because of the provided entries I assume you mean the buttons in the so
called "handy-menu" (new since ff29).

Here is a list of buttons we "disable":
#add-ons-button, /* Add-ons */
#developer-button, /* Entwickler-Werkzeuge */
#privatebrowsing-button, /* Privates Fenster */
#preferences-button, /* Einstellungen */
#abp-toolbarbutton, /* Adblock Plus */
#sync-button, /* Synchronisieren */
#feed-button, /* Abonnieren */
#loop-button, /* Hello */
#pocket-button, /* Pocket */
#social-share-button, /* Seite teilen */
#web-apps-button, /* Apps */
#panic-button /* Vergessen */

We don't disable buttons in about:home because we don't use about:home page.
I looked with inspector and found div-id "launcher".

The following line in userContent.css will hide the whole launcher:
#launcher  {display: none !important;}

I don't know how to disable single buttons and I'm not sure if you can
limit this css to the about:home page so not every launcher element in
every web-page will be disabled?

But maybee it's a start for further investigations ...

Mit freundlichen Grüßen
