[equinox-dev] removal of UUID in Eclipse Platform -- new build at I20160606-1100
This is the build that has the fix for bug 495484 and (I hope) our final build for Neon. http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops4/I20160606-1100/ After the unit tests complete I will rename it, promote to download server, and update the b3aggrcon file. I plan to call it "RC4a"l Since the tests take so long, it will be late tonight or early tomorrow that the new name appears on downloads server, and I just wanted to give this "early notice" in case anyone was building against or testing with the "final version", then you could safely use the I20160606-1100 build. [equinox-dev] Notice that Eclipse Platform plans to no longer provide MD5 and SHA1 checksums for Neon (but still SHA512)
The topic of this note is about the downloads and checksums obtained directly from the the Eclipse Project. It does not involve the checksums from the "select a mirror" page -- that is controlled by the Eclipse Foundation -- nor any of the packages downloaded from http://www.eclipse.org/downloads -- also controlled by the Eclipse Foundation. My intuition is that few "casual users" use our checksums but some adopters or committers might use them in automated scripts or builds. If any of you do get checksums directly from .../eclipse/downloads/drops4//checksum/... then this note is for you. We announced in Luna we would "stop producing MD5 and SHA1 checksums" after Luna's release (Bug 423714) ... and I am just now getting around to it. Since it has been a long time since that announcement, and since we are late in this cycle, I am cross-posting to 3 lists to be sure those that might be impacted will be notified. We will continue to provide SHA512 checksums and I recently decided to also provide SHA256 checksums since SHA256 seems to be popular "in the industry". This RC1 effort is documented in Bug 454784. If the removal of the MD5 and SHA1 checksums would unduly burden anyone, please say so in that Bug 454784 and we would be happy to accommodate. I will soon be updating our wiki on How to verify a download to contain accurate information for Neon, but wanted to get this notice out now so if you are negatively impacted you would have time to say so. Re: [equinox-dev] little help with http.servlet.tests
Ray, I don't really have much of an answer, but in case you haven't tried these yet ... One thing I noticed was that you list org.apache.commons.fileupload as an "extra requirement". But, that should not be needed, since you import the packages explicitly in your manifest.mf file. I have not heard that hurts anything ... but, you never can tell. (And, by "hurt", I mean you might be getting multiple versions, from multiple sources, or perhaps by naming it "early" it somehow gets wired to the 2.8 version of javax.servlet so by the time your code requires 3.1 of javax.servlet something things appears invalid. All just guesses. Another thing, if you haven't tried it yet, is to be sure to clean out (i.e. delete) your "localMavenRepo". I've found that occasionally it keeps copies of something that is incorrect, but incorrect in such a way that makes it hard to notice. Hope one of these suggestions help. [equinox-dev] Mars.1 (Eclipse 4.5.1) delayed one week, until 10/2 10 AM
To both our community and committers, For those that may not read other lists were this has been discussed, we are postponing the Mars.1 release by one week, to fix some issues found late. More details in the cross-project list: https://dev.eclipse.org/mhonarc/lists/cross-project-issues-dev/msg12402.html While this does not directly effect Eclipse's or Equinox's build or release, by the "rules of citizenship" we will not officially release until that coordinated release. To our committers, The only issues this causes for us, I believe, are exactly when to tag our 4.5.1 release (Bug 478237) and when to re-start M-builds (that is, when to "open up" the R4_5_maintenance branch. The tagging is easy to postpone a week. And while we were going to start building again next week, my preference is to leave the branch closed (and not do builds) until after the official release. Only because in the very rare event that WE would have to do a rebuild for Mars.1 -- now that there's an extra week for someone to find a blocking defect :) -- then it is a little easier and cleaner to work with the tip of the branch, rather than building off tags. BUT, if this delay in re-opening the maintenance branch interferes with committers needs, priorities, or productivity, we certainly can re-build from tags (in the rare event that we would even need to). I will ask, though, that if anyone wants to open the branch sooner, and for builds to resume sooner than October 7, then please ask for it explicitly on platform-releng-dev list, perhaps with the briefest of explanations. I really would be happy to ... but ... do not want to do it, if not really needed. [equinox-dev] Planning to aggressively remove I- and M- builds, on Friday, 9/18, around 3 PM Eastern
Partially due to the up-coming Mars.1 release, but also due to "complaints" of "too many I-builds" in repository composite, I plan to remove "old builds" a little earlier than usual -- not a lot earlier, but enough that I wanted to give "early warning" since some may have to update build scripts before the weekend. For the I-builds, after I promote our M2 build, I will quickly delete all I-build before I20150914-2000. Then, I will remove the rest of the old ones next Wednesday, after our first I-build towards M3. For M-builds, on Friday, I will remove all of them before our final release candidate of 4.5.1RC3. Re: [equinox-dev] [eclipse-dev] WAIT! Eclipse 4.5 RC2 and Equinox (Mars RC2) is NOT available for download -- WITHDRAWN
Apologies, but we are withdrawing this version of RC2 and will reconsider the changes that lead to the Bug 468061. After some little more investigation its feared this issues may be more complex than we first thought and want to take the weekend to reconsider. If we do end up fixing/reverting, it may minimize churn if users do not already have this version of RC2 installed. If you have already installed it there's nothing you have to do now, but once we get RC2a ready, we'll be sure to test, and document, if there is anything special you need to do to revert or .. if we are all lucky ... maybe it will be transparent. Apologies again. We will have an update on the situation by Sunday or Monday. Re: [equinox-dev] Gerrit job failure
For the curious, This change probably was due to a change in he Eclipse parent pom ( https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=423105). 3.1.1 actually has been required since 4.4 M4, but we only recently discovered our attempt to codify that requirement was not actually enforcing it, and then we learned how to do that. [equinox-dev] Eclipse (4.4.2RC1) and Equinox (LunaSR2RC1) are available
(Second note, with one clarification, in italics.) Thus begins the beginning of the end. :) In hindsight (and, since at least one person asked me about it :) I should have given a link to our endgame [1] plan -- I can understand how that those who do not follow our day-to-day grind would not get my little play on words. Apologies for the delay in renaming and promoting, but these are the same bits that were available in Wednesday's M-build (M20150114-1500) and purely my distractions that caused the delay. This first RC is a warm up RC, meaning it has not been tested as much as subsequent ones will be, and there are known bugs still planned to be fixed for SR2. But, it gives a good opportunity for us and the rest of the release train to begin our final integration (aggregation) for SR2 to make sure nothing has grown apart. (The rest of train will be available in one week, on January 23). This is a good build to verify bugs that were fixed between SR1 and now, to confirm we fixed what we think we did. But, we do advice adopters to focus on acceptance testing beginning with RC2 (assuming there are limited resources, since some tests might have to be repeated in subsequent RCs). Re: [equinox-dev] ClassCastException in LocalMetadataRepository
I think tycho-users would be a better list, as the RemoteMetadataRepository is a tycho class: org.eclipse.tycho.p2.remote.RemoteMetadataRepositoryManager But, I think if you did ask there, you'd learn that Tycho does not support the old-style site.xml repositories, which is what the findbugs repo is, that you referenced. p2 by itself (or tools that delegate completely to p2, such as b3 aggregator) do handle these old-style sites, by basically downloading everything and doing a conversion to new-style site on the fly. You would probably also learn, if you asked on tycho-users, that your options are to a) convince original project (findbugs) to move up, or b) make your own p2 repo on the side from the old-style site, and then in your build point to your new-style site. At least, that's what I learned by doing a web search for Tycho and site.xml and finding http://stackoverflow.com/questions/22628911/how-to-use-a-site-xml-base-update-site-in-a-tycho-build That stackoverflow answer also points to a URL with an example of one way to accomplish this: http://wiki.eclipse.org/Tycho/Additional_Tools#publish-features-and-bundles_goal Hope that helps, From: Arlo O'Keeffe mailtoa...@gmail.com To: equinox-dev@eclipse.org, Date: 12/26/2014 12:01 PM Subject:[equinox-dev] ClassCastException in LocalMetadataRepository Sent by:equinox-dev-boun...@eclipse.org Hello, I am one of the maintainers of m2e-code-quality [1]. [equinox-dev] Mars M1 is upon us!
Team, It's surprising how quickly the relaxing summer goes by, eh? It turns out our Mars M1 is next week (our +0 deliverables due on 8/8 -- and there will be a 2 week window for everyone else, so the Simultaneous Mars M1 will be complete on 8/22). This means our stabilization week begins this Sunday 8/3, when we start doing 2 I-builds per day, from Sunday 8 PM to Wednesday 8 PM with the usual sign-off on 8/7. New and Noteworthy contributions should be made on by end-of-day Wednesday, 8/6 -- and we are going to try a new procedure this development cycle. Instead of putting NN in the news repository (and copying a bunch of files around) we will put it directly in our website repository. See bug 437930 . All component leads should have access to this website repo, and if you've never used it, the URL is ssh://committer-Id@git.eclipse.org/gitroot/www.eclipse.org/eclipse.git In the event a component lead can not do it (such as on vacation, or similar) and in the rare case the person they delegate to, does not have write access, you can simply reply to this request with attached patch, or add to a bugzilla, and we'll be sure it gets in there. I have updated our build schedule with all this information -- just for M1, so far -- but wanted to broadly send out this note to increase the chances everyone sees it ... since it has caught me be surprise and we are so close to the deadlines. And, don't forget, our Luna SR1 RC1 is just a couple of weeks away -- but, we'll worry about M1 first. I don't know if this problem was solved ... or worked around but didn't want the issue to get lost, so I opened a bug in Orbit, https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=437470 to make sure the issue isn't lost (thought not sure it's a true Orbit Bug ... seemed as good a place as any). Re: [equinox-dev] Resolver Problem with guava and e4 (javax.annotation)
My main question is ... is this required for Luna? (I assume not, that it shows up in e4 incubator? so could wait to SR1 if we find a safe, non-breaking change? Or Mars if breaking?) Second, I've only barely read the details (they make my head spin) but wondering if it is reasonable for resolver.problem to require Java 8 AND javax.annotaion 1.0.0? That seems quite a mix of old and new? I assume this is an attempt to be compatible with older bundles that require javax.annotation 1.0? If it helps, and if you haven't already, you might want to read https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=424909#c0 and what it points to, https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=422981#c5 Now for some wild ideas to show my ignorance ... which helps occasionally :) ... I notice in Orbit, all our javax.annotation bundles follow the import what you export pattern that's good, such as Export-Package: javax.annotation;version=1.2.0, javax.annotation.security;version=1.2.0, javax.annotation.sql;version=1.2.0 Import-Package: javax.annotation;version=1.2.0, javax.annotation.security;version=1.2.0, javax.annotation.sql;version=1.2.0 BUT, in this case, I wonder if we should be so restrictive about what we import? Would the following be better? Export-Package: javax.annotation;version=1.2.0, javax.annotation.security;version=1.2.0, javax.annotation.sql;version=1.2.0 Import-Package: javax.annotation, javax.annotation.security, javax.annotation.sql I suppose that's about the same as requiring system.bundle? Just mix in with what ever in in running JRE? (Which, from https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=422981#c5 sounds like it would work, in this case ... that is, high degree of similarity, except for new things? I'm just throwing this out as an idea ... only the experts could say if it makes sense. As for your suggestion b) guava does import javax.annotation;1.0.0 instead I'm assuming our Orbit guava version is what they (the third party) provides (which is what we always strive for) so you might work with them, to find out if there's a reason they did it the way they did, if they'd be willing to change, etc. But I'm mostly asking ... this isn't blocking Luna, right? To clarify ... yes ... by one more build left I meant one more RC left (that is, RC4 is final). I was Just (trying) to emphasize little time left. And, I only do that, since it's a little confusing since official simultaneous release is not until June 25 ... I find is confusing anyway :) But we in Platform have a longer quiet period than other projects ... just to have some proper buffer in the plan (which is required, to coordinate 40+ projects). [equinox-dev] Eclipse and Equinox have moved to using SHA-2, 512 bit hashes for downloads -- Don't panic!
I wanted to be sure everyone knew that beginning with tonight's I-build ( I20140519-2000), Eclipse and Equinox have changed to provide SHA512 hashes for downloadable zips and tar files, instead of the previous MD5 and SHA1 hash sums. See the references in https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=420010#c1 for why it's a bad idea to continue to rely on MD5 and SHA1. Our conversion and plan is documented in bug 423714 https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=423714 The disadvantage of using such a large hash is that its not something you can verify just by looking at it ... but ... insecure is insecure, and it is a pretty easy task to automate (and is a LOT easier, once you have done that). See https://wiki.eclipse.org/Platform-releng/How_to_check_integrity_of_downloads for instructions and links to tools. Feel free to contribute to that page if anyone has any general purpose scripts that others could use or know of other tools that would be handy to know about. Now -- here's where your feedback is needed -- we'd actually like to stop producing the MD5 and SHA1 checksums, say, a month after Luna release ... but if if this is just too disruptive or doesn't work for someone, please comment in Bug 423714 explaining. In the mean time, we do not link to the old MD5 or SHA1 checksums from the download page, but they are still there ... right where they always were ... to make sure we don't suddenly break someone's scripts or builds. And if you do rely on them now, we hope you can convert after the Luna release (if not before). Do feel free to comment in the bug, if this has some negative consequence we have not anticipated ... but, my guess is that anyone who cares about them in the first place will appreciate the modernization. [equinox-dev] Eclipse 4.3.2 and Equinox (Kepler SR2) are released and ready to download or update
Thanks to all the committers, contributors, and community, who, have made this service release possible. I have not done a careful count, but know there were around 100 bugs fixed in the Eclipse Platform project, so am sure everyone will appreciate the improvements in quality. [equinox-dev] Eclipse 4.3.2 and Equinox SR2 RC4 is available for download
I'm please to announce our final candidate for Kepler SR2. We do not anticipate any further builds, but might if a serious blocking regression was found before the formal release. [equinox-dev] Eclipse 4.3.2 and Equinox (Kepler SR2 RC3) builds available
I'm pleased to announce our next-to-last SR2 build is available for download and testing. Not many changes from previous RC ... but some important ones, so please continue acceptance testing, especially looking for bad regressions. As a reminder, the EPP packages that will contain this version will be available in one week (2/14). Also remember, for your planning, that once we create and promote our RC4 next week (on 2/14), that even though that is anticipated to be our final build, eventually to be our SR2 release, that we don't actually promote it as final release until after a quiet week buffer and formally release it at the same time as everyone else on the Kepler train does (on Friday, 2/28). [equinox-dev] Eclipse 4.3.2 and Equinox (Kepler SR2) RC1 are available
This is the first release candidate for Eclipse 4.3.2 and Equinox Kepler SR2. There will be 3 other RCs, with the official release planned for February 28. This first one we call a warm-up RC, in that it is not a true release candidate ... that is, its is not tested as systematically as the remaining RCs will be, and there are some bugs we know we still want to fix before the true release candidate (RC2). Put another way, the community and adopters are welcome to test this version if you'd like, but ... if you have limited resources and want to test something close to final, we recommend waiting until RC2. [equinox-dev] Eclipse 4.3.1RC1 promoted as M-4.3.1RC1-201308140800
Just so everyone knows, the past several SR cycles, I've just left our maintenance RC builds named with what ever M build name they had when first produced. But, after ?2 years? at the job, I think I'm finally starting to catch up with Kim's skills and have learned how to semi-automate how to rename these M-builds to contain RC1, RC2, etc., so our RC1 candidate build, M20130814-0800, has been copied/renamed to M-4.3.1RC1-201308140800. Contents are identical to M20130814-0800 but the rename should help those looking for the right one to test with, or build on top of ... especially when we get to the one week window phase. Re: [equinox-dev] org.eclipse.osgi.framework.debug.FrameworkDebugOptions
Tom (and the one or two others who might know) are not available this week so ... just so that you do not feel ignored :) I'll respond with the tiny bit I know, and Tom can later address deeper if needed. Short answer: I believe it is intended to be gone ... but I don't what to recommend on how to transition. The previous version, in package org.eclipse.osgi.framework.debug, was marked as x-internal in MANIFEST.MF (meaning, was not API, even though did not have internal in the package name). There is a new version of FrameworkDebugOptions, now in a package with 'internal' in the name, org.eclipse.osgi.internal.debug, which, off hand, ... from the most casual of skim reading ... appears to be intended to be used more as a service, not by direct (non-API) reference. Tom has been working hard re-implementing a large amount of Equinox internals for some time (in anticipation of new specs) and while I didn't see 'debug' mentioned explicitly, there is a lot written about the changes at http://wiki.eclipse.org/Equinox/Luna_Framework and that wiki page in turn points to various specs and other specific bugs which might help you migrate off the non-API class. Hope this helps ... but if if not, ask again in a week or two and I'm sure Tom can say more. Sent by:equinox-dev-boun...@eclipse.org In Equinox we have a two implementations of the HttpService. 1) org.eclipse.equinox.http - that has a home grown web container and therefore has to implement the complete servlet specification itself. 2) org.eclipse.equinox.http.jetty - that is uses a jetty implementation for the web container implementation. The implementation that uses jetty is by far the most used HttpService implementation we have. For example, it is the one shipped with the eclipse SDK to serve up the help and is used in the server-side equinox project. The old org.eclipse.equinox.http is outdated and gets very little attention by the committers. As we consider moving to support servlet 3.0 and Jetty 8 we also need to consider what, if anything, should be done for the old stand-alone HttpService bundle org.eclipse.equinox.http. For Juno I propose that the Equinox project stops building the old stand-alone HttpService implementation bundle org.eclipse.equinox.http. I would much prefer we focus on the implementation of the HttpService that uses Jetty and keep the implementation of the servlet container in the hands of the experts that know how to implement it (i.e. the jetty team). Re: [equinox-dev] java.lang.LinkageError: loader constraint violation
Here's some information to give you some hints, some possible things to explore, but I doubt it will help directly. You don't say what version of equinox, or VM, you are using, but if it is pre 3.6 M2, I'd suggest you try with the latest milestone just to see if it works. I say this because in 3.6 M2, Bug 285505 was fixed which _might_ be indirectly related. https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=285505. Especially if it does solve your problem, and you need to use a released version, you can employ a work around in your own code, by using the threads threads context classloader. Something like Thread.currentThread().setContextClassLoader(this.getClass().getClassLoader()); _before_ your code calls (directly or indirectly) SOAPPartImpl. (with all the right resets/trys/finallys, etc.) But this type of problem is pretty complicated, and depends on many things (e.g. which JVM you are using, which and how many versions of Node you have on your classpath, how and where orasaaj.jar gets its version of 'Node'). There's quite a few things on the internet that describe or address the issue in different contexts, one such example is http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/websphere/library/techarticles/0310_searle/searle.html . But, I think, its fundamentally a DOM implementation and JVM issue, and OSGi just finds the problem early, before it gets to a runtime problem? But, you say it happens while trying to build a bundle so if you mean that literally ... then my advise won't really help at all (since it is a runtime solution). In any case, I hope the information gives you some things to look at, or to frame the question more precisely. Good luck, From: f...@protelsws.com To: equinox-dev equinox-dev@eclipse.org Date: 12/02/2009 08:25 PM Subject: [equinox-dev] java.lang.LinkageError: loader constraint violation Sent by: equinox-dev-boun...@eclipse.org Hello all. Re: [equinox-dev] .qualifier for export package?
Without some sort of increasing version number on the packages, p2 for example, will have a hard time figuring out what to give you cause everything will look the same to it. Can anyone think of another way of enabling #2? Wouldn't p2 _have_ to always pick a bundle with the highest qualifier (thereby getting the highest level of any packages in that bundle)? If not, then this API use case would only be a special case of a general problem of using old implementations. Perhaps I'm missing the point? From: Jeff McAffer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Equinox development mailing list equinox-dev@eclipse.org Date: 09/05/2008 04:32 AM Subject: Re: [equinox-dev] .qualifier for export package? I'm certainly sympathetic to you thinking here. Having qualifiers in import statements is ugly at best. The challenge is that in the dev cycle the API of something may change many many times. This would lead to quite visible changes in unreasonable ways. For example, say we introduce some API and then break it several times as we refine in the dev cycle. Then the first release of the API might have version 42.23.27 or some such. Trying to manage API semantics during the dev/release cycle seems like overkill. Clearly that is an over done example but you get the point I hope. Lets step back for a second. Some goals in decreasing order of priority/importance. Goal #1: ensure that at least all API packages have version numbers on the exports. Goal #2: be able to eat our own dog food wrt provisioning and version management during the dev cycle. Good news is that #1 is likely agreed to and *all* we have to do is put the initial version numbers on the current packages and then have the tooling help people manage them according to the current versioning model. The proposal for using .qualifier was actually one possible implementation of goal #2. #2 is interesting because eating our own dog food seems to greatly increase the likelihood of our technology being good/useful. Without some sort of increasing version number on the packages, p2 for example, will have a hard time figuring out what to give you cause everything will look the same to it. Can anyone think of another way of enabling #2? Of the top of my head I'm thinking that something like the odd/even version pattern might help... Jeff BJ Hargrave wrote: If you change API during dev cycle, that is the proper time to also change the major or minor version. That is the whole point. I would assume that API tooling will complain until you do so. Just changing the qualifier is insufficient to capture an API change. Also, I think that last thing we want to see are bundles using qualifiers in import package statements! So if you use qualifier to denote API change during dev, then other bundles will need to import using qualifiers to ensure they wire to the desire API if they use it. UGLY! Qualifiers are useful to capture implementation changes. But API is a specified thing that changes deliberately and (hopefully) slowly and its version is not subject to implementation. -- BJ Hargrave Senior Technical Staff Member, IBM OSGi Fellow and CTO of the OSGi Alliance [EMAIL PROTECTED] office: +1 386 848 1781 mobile: +1 386 848 3788 From: Jeff McAffer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Equinox development mailing list equinox-dev@eclipse.org Date: 2008/09/03 06:16 AM Subject: Re: [equinox-dev] .qualifier for export package? I understand your hestiation and actually agree with you from the released code point of view. However, we spend a lot of time dealing with code and API that is in development. If we are to have any hope of provisioning and managing that, we need to know the difference between the various iterations of the packages. For example, when someone adds an API during the dev cycle and you want use it, you need to import the right version of the package to ensure you get it. Changing the first three segments version number of the package for every change done in the dev cycle feels too disruptive. To a certain extent this could be handled in the provisioning system but that would force the situation of bundles in a particular context (e.g., a build lineup). That is, bundles would no longer be completely/accurately self-describing. Jeff BJ Hargrave wrote: I would be extremely cautious about using qualifier on package versions.
