Re: [EVDL] EVLN: 18 wing-motor NASA electric aircraft concept r:200mi

2015-03-22 Thread jerry freedomev via EV

Hi Peter and All,   While interesting it has
a fatal flaw as small props are far less eff than say 6 larger ones in
thrust/kw. Large props and low rpms is the key to range.
In an EV such large unneeded losses just don't fly as kills range, increases
weight/battery/cost.  Next the effect on the wing would be
far better done with blown lift from wing slots, etc giving a smooth, more
powerful  effect  on lift, control on much less power.    Same
with all the drones now where 2 counter rotating blades on the same shaft of
the vehicle dia would over double it's range or lift/kw, kwhr of battery.
So yes it is wacky.  KIS,

NASA testing an all electric aircraft with wacky design concept

Why does the author feel the need to put wacky in the title? The
wing in question looks very normal, and the range of 200 miles in fact
quite reasonable for an early test model.

Because it is different, and that scares him.

Seriously, though, this is a very smart idea. You can pitch the props
different for the different parts of the wing, you can even have some of
the motors turn off entirely and have the prop feather away.  Being able
to use different power levels means the wings will be MUCH more
difficult to stall.

This idea has been thoroughly discussed on some of the airplane forums I
read, and the consensus is that if they can work out the power problem
(same problem we face with EVs), then this will work out really well.

Cheers, Peter

From what I have read, Japan raises the taxes on older vehicles to the point
that it isn't economic to keep them beyond a certain point. This is also the

Around here, they all switched from private cars to postal vehicles a good
decade ago. There were debates at the time about safety. People using
regular cars had to sit on the passenger's side (to reach the mail boxes),
and drive with only their left hand on the wheel and left foot to (barely)
reach the accelerator and brake. Can't reach the turn signals, so they
weren't used. That led to accidents.

Today, I don't know what the Post Office's policy is nationwide. Does anyone

Here in central Texas, most or perhaps all carriers use their own cars. I
think all have converted to right drive. One friend has a wife that is a
carrier; I've offered to lend them an EV to try. Route is about 50 miles.
She had been using a surplus USPS Jeep. She recently acquired a used Cherokee
that had it's origin in Japan. Apparently Japan outlaws vehicles before they
become well used; many seem to be parted out and/or exported.

They might not hook the mail carriers themselves. They're not likely
to be rich enough to afford one.

But I *can* see using the model S ust to get the mail carriers to be
enthusiastic supporters of EVs. After all, they get to drive a sports
 car instead of a truck!

Then Tesla can sell customized EV mail trucks to the Post Office for
some inflated price, to get back all the money they spent on the free

Actually, it appears that the vehicles *were* more reliable, and considerably
less expensive to operate than their ICE counterparts. That despite all the
problems with a limited production experimental vehicle.

No doubt operating costs are cheaper. It's the up front capital cost. Lots of
miles needed to spread that cost.

Also, despite the enormous price quoted for the lead-acid battery (up to
$14,000). I wonder what Ford did to come up with that expensive a battery?

You can also see the back pedaling by Ford to get out of their EV
commitments once the CA ZEV program was rolled back.

From what I heard in some cases employees would simply drive the
vehicle till it wouldn't go another inch and ask for a tow...

That appeared in earlier trials. The employees didn't like the vehicles, and
so went out of their way to make them fail... with everything from passive
resistance (forgetting to plug it in) to outright abuse and sabotage.

But this trial seems to have gone pretty well, without evidence of that sort
of abuse. There are some oddities in the data, though. Like some stations
that had essentially no problems, and others with massive numbers of problems
despite very similar numbers of miles being driven.

It's the most recent trial result I've seen, so maybe these vehicles were a
lot better developed and matched to the employees likes and dislikes. They
were built by Ford and Grumman, who have a lot of experience in getting the
various fit and finish details right, so they wouldn't have seemed so alien
 to the postal workers.

Nevertheless, there were lots of problems with things that had little to do
 with it being an EV.

Richard Branson could be racing toward a showdown with Elon Musk.

At the past weekend’s Formula E electric car grand prix in Miami, the Virgin
brand’s founder was asked by Bloomberg News where he was going with his
participation in the series.

We have teams of people working on electric cars, Branson answered. So
you never know—you may find Virgin competing with the Tesla in the car
business as we do in the space business. We will see what happens.

Branson was referring to his Virgin Galactic space tourism project, which
suffered a setback last October when its SpaceShip Two suborbital aircraft
crashed in the Mojave Desert during a test flight, claiming the life of one
of the pilots on board and delaying the launch of customer rides
indefinitely. Musk’s SpaceX builds rockets and cargo capsules for hire by
government agencies and commercial customers, but also plans to expand to
space tourism.

As for cars, teams in the Formula E championship currently use a spec,
F1-style open wheel vehicle built through a partnership between Dallara,
McLaren, and Williams Engineering with help from Renault, but over the
coming years teams will be allowed to design and use their own electric
motors and battery packs.

The Virgin Racing website proclaims that the reason it is competing in the
series is to “accelerate the pace of development so that electric cars
rapidly catch up with their petrol counterparts and replace them on the
road.”

Currently, Formula E drivers have to switch cars in the middle of races,
which last for about an hour each, because batteries with a capacity to go
the full distance would be too large and heavy.

Halfway through the 2014-2015 season, Virgin Racing is third in the
standings.

Richard Branson has just revealed that Virgin is currently in the midst of
working on a selection of electric cars to potentially rival the offerings
of Tesla.

While speaking with Bloomberg at the recent Miami round of the FIA Formula E
championship, Branson said “We have teams of people working on electric
cars. So you never know — you may find Virgin competing with the Tesla in
the car business as we do in the space business. We will see what happens.”

Branson and Virgin have managed to gain significant amounts of experience
with electric cars as they compete in the Formula E championship which of
course uses all-electric open-wheeled racers. Of course, making the leap to
road cars is quite significant and it would see Virgin facing some stiff
competition.

Not only does Tesla offer two electric cars, the Model S and the Roadster,
it will also introduce the model X SUV and the more affordable Model 3 sedan
in the coming years. Beyond Tesla of course, most of the world’s large
automakers already offer or are developing electric vehicles.

The Virgin giganto-brand already encompasses a media empire, a few airlines,
wireless phone service, some hotels and an honest-to-goodness space program
-- why wouldn't it churn out some electric cars for us, too? CEO Richard

Certainly possible, though not mentioned. Range was an issue.

The usual ICE delivery vehicle manufacturers never want to build EV

Don't forget Pepsi/Frito-Lay. They have the biggest fleet.

They have 280 EVs. Cost and range are issues. Subsidies are still
important to them for new tech.

I attended a rollout of a number of EV trucks they put into their fleet.
This is important to us in California. One reason why the Governor attended.

But their fleet is converting mainly to CNG...40% after this year...a good

In small towns, they find that their demand for electricity exceeds

That can't be because they are EVs. I'll bet it's simply because UPS (or

pay to route in the usual power and other utilities that any factory or

Why does the author feel the need to put wacky in the title? The wing
in question looks very normal, and the range of 200 miles in fact quite
reasonable for an early test model.

The e-NV200 will cut costs and environmental impact, as well as exposing
customers to electric vehicles
]

Enterprise Rent-A-Car has added a Nissan e-NV200 electric MPV to its
Madrid-based fleet, where it will shuttle customers from its office in
Atocha to the vehicle collection point.

The company said its latest addition, a five-seat Evalia sold as the Combi
in the UK, would offer the benefits of zero tailpipe emissions for urban
use, as well as reducing maintenance costs by 40% and fuel costs by up to
four times compared to an equivalent diesel-powered vehicle.

Karsten Summers, Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s director general for Spain, said:
The Nissan e-NV200 we will benefit not only a smooth and quiet ride, but we
can also experience the saving costs of electric, zero-emission technology.

Elder Francisco, director of business sales and light commercials Nissan
Iberia, added: It is especially important that those groups who work in
transport, lead the implementation of this technology. Acquiring the
e-NV200, Enterprise Rent-A -Car not only increases its environmental
commitment but also positions itself as an innovative reference group.”

[EVDL] EVLN: 18 wing-motor NASA electric aircraft concept r:200mi

2015-03-22 Thread brucedp5 via EV

NASA testing an all electric aircraft with wacky design concept
17/03/2015 By David Curry

[image
http://files.itproportal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/nasa-leaptech.jpg
(eplane)
]

NASA space budget might have been cut down in the past few years, but on
Earth it is still working on some wacky projects, including a fully electric
aircraft.

Named the LEAPTech wing, it is part of a joint operation between NASA, Joby
Aviation and ESAero to build a replacement to the gas chugging airplanes.

Joby Aviation is the main organisation working on the design of the LEAPTech
wing, previously working on small aircraft using a new style of propellers
for maximum efficiency in the air.

The LEAPTech wing features 18 electric motors all independent of one
another, allowing the pilot to command each individual motor for even more
efficiency. These motors are powered by lithium ion phosphate batteries,
with a range of 200 miles.

NASA has tried the wing on several tests and will use the Tecnam P2006T
aircraft with a customised LEAPTech wing to test for the first flights.

There is still the issue of range, currently at 200 miles. NASA could use a
hybrid system for intermission between gas and fully electric, featuring a
range of 400 miles.

Even with the hybrid engine, 400 miles is not enough to entice any
commercial airline, considering most need enough fuel to travel more than
one continent.

That said, electric car range has been doubled in the last five years,
meaning we should expect to see similar gains in the electric aircraft
market once more companies start getting involved.

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk did say the only mode of transport that could not use
electric motors would be rockets, and said he would consider working on an
electric aircraft sometime in the near future.

December, it underwent preliminary testing at Oceano, California. Image

]

The arrival of a unique experimental demonstrator at NASA Armstrong Flight
Research Center on February 26 may herald a future in which many aircraft
are powered by electric motors.

The Leading Edge Asynchronous Propeller Technology (LEAPTech) project will
test the premise that tighter propulsion-airframe integration, made possible
with electric power, will deliver improved efficiency and safety, as well as
environmental and economic benefits.

Over the next several months, NASA researchers will perform ground testing
of a 31-foot-span, carbon composite wing section with 18 electric motors
powered by lithium iron phosphate batteries.

The experimental wing, called the Hybrid-Electric Integrated Systems Testbed
(HEIST), is mounted on a specially modified truck. Testing on the mobile
ground rig assembly will provide valuable data and risk reduction applicable
to future flight research.

Instead of being installed in a wind tunnel, the HEIST wing section will
remain attached to load cells on a supporting truss while the vehicle is
driven at speeds up to 70 miles per hour across a dry lakebed at Edwards Air
Force Base. Preliminary testing, up to 40 mph, took place in January at
Oceano County Airport on California’s Central Coast.

The LEAPTech project began in 2014 when researchers from NASA Langley
Research Center and Armstrong partnered with two California companies,
Empirical Systems Aerospace (ESAero) in Pismo Beach and Joby Aviation in
Santa Cruz. ESAero is the prime contractor for HEIST responsible for system
integration and instrumentation, while Joby is responsible for design and
manufacture of the electric motors, propellers, and carbon fiber wing
section.

[image] Within a few years the NASA hopes to fly a piloted X-plane,
replacing the wings and engines of a Tecnam P2006T with an improved version
of the LEAPTech wing. Using an existing airframe will allow engineers to
compare the performance of the flight demonstrator with that of the original
P2006T. Image Credit: NASA Photo
The truck experiment is a precursor to a development of a small X-plane
demonstrator proposed under NASA’s Transformative Aeronautics Concepts
program.

Researchers hope to fly a piloted X-plane

Not surprising. Most are new vehicles, from new manufacturers. Lots of
bugs to work out, often having nothing to do with it being electric
(brakes, suspension, steering, body work, etc.)

Certainly possible, though not mentioned. Range was an issue.

The usual ICE delivery vehicle manufacturers never want to build EV
versions, so USPS, UPS, Fedex, etc. get them from new (and inexperienced)
  suppliers.

Don't forget Pepsi/Frito-Lay. They have the biggest fleet.

They have 280 EVs. Cost and range are issues. Subsidies are still important
 to them for new tech.

I attended a rollout of a number of EV trucks they put into their fleet.
This is important to us in California. One reason why the Governor attended.

But their fleet is converting mainly to CNG...40% after this year...a good
 thing, too.

In small towns, they find that their demand for electricity exceeds
that of the entire town! So, for example, in San Bernardino County in
California, they had to build their own infrastructure.

That can't be because they are EVs. I'll bet it's simply because UPS (or
whoever) put a big distribution center in the middle of nowhere, and had
to pay to route in the usual power and other utilities that any factory or
  business needs.

Re: [EVDL] postal delivery

Jim Wolfe posted a response in this thread, but the server firewalled it
because he apparently sent it as html only (Jim, please set your email to
send either plain text or multipart html with plain text alternative, so I
don't have to do this again; reformatting the message takes a significant
amount of time).

Here is the post.

Around here, they all switched from private cars to postal vehicles a
good decade ago. There were debates at the time about safety. People
using regular cars had to sit on the passenger's side (to reach the mail
boxes), and drive with only their left hand on the wheel and left foot
to (barely) reach the accelerator and brake. Can't reach the turn
signals, so they weren't used. That led to accidents.

Today, I don't know what the Post Office's policy is nationwide. Does
anyone have a mail carrier that uses their personal car?

My daughter is a rural mail carrier that uses her own vehicle. (The right
side of her vehicle shows how close she gets to mailboxes.) Her route(s) are
out of Green Bay Wisconsin. The PO is 30+ miles from her home and I don't
know the length of the routes, but even in the summertime range might be an
issue as the route may not end up on her side of the PO.

I believe the winters would kill the deal in her case, summers maybe... Her
vehicle is also a FWD Durango, which is necessary for the snow covered and
icy rural roads in the winter.

Here in the Phoenix area it would seem to make good business sense to use
electrics. In my area the mailboxes are about 100 ft apart. The mailman
stops and turns off the truck, gets out to place the mail in the mailbox as
there is a sidewalk and curb to traverse. I asked why he shuts off the truck
for the 10 seconds that it takes to deliver the mail and he stated that it
was required that he not leave the vehicle running when he's not in it. He
did say that the biggest maintenance item was a starter as they don't last
more than a couple of months.

I also have a nephew who is a driver for UPS who drives up to 200 miles a
day in Arizona.

BTW: None of the UPS trucks in Phoenix have AC...

Re: [EVDL] postal delivery

2015-03-22 Thread Martin WINLOW via EV
Here in the UK we have what are called 'life-style couriers' - people who use
their own cars to deliver (and collect) parcels on behalf of a courier company
(eg myHermes and CollectPlus). They do this part time, generally, and
therefore are able to fit their courier duties in around other jobs,
housewifery, kids etc. I would think their courier-ing needs would be ideally
met by even a small, modern EV - i-MiEV/LEAF - but better still a Renault
Kangoo EV which can be bought very cheaply these days (used) but don't have the
benefit of the CHAdeMO rapid charge (they have their own but its not as rapid
nor is the infrastructure as advanced as CHAdeMO). I would have thought they
could double their income. They all use family cars anyway so space is not
going to be a problem. I must pin down my local reps and ask them how many
miles they do a day...

As for the USPS seems like the posties who use their own vehicle (if they still
do) could lead the pack but maybe the miles they do just doesn't work for
currently available EVs?

Both my dad and a cousin worked at the Post Office.

My dad was a gear-head... ICEs forever, EVs will never fly, etc. He saw the
EV trials as a waste of time and money. He was even a union steward for a
time in the NALC (National Association of Letter Carriers) union. They had an
adversarial relationship with management; so anything management likes, the
union automatically hates. It was (and maybe still is) just about impossible
to fire anyone. That makes it a tough environment for change.

Now my cousin was much younger. He worked a rural route where he used his own
car, instead of a free postal vehicle. The way the reimbursement schedule was
set up, the cheaper he could drive, the more money he made. He *did* see the
merits of an EV, and even considered using my surplus ComutaVan for his
route. But he was discouraged from this by the other gear-heads in the
service (if I don't drive a manly vehicle, I'll be ridiculed).

Like I said; a tough environment for change. :-(

Excellent idea Lee - I can see it now. Postperson enters Tesla Showroom and
 says
'I drive a Tesla Mail Carrier for work, now I want the Model S for play.'

Maybe if the postperson's spouse is an investment banker.

But seriously... someone like Tesla *could* build a delivery vehicle that was
fun and exciting to drive. THAT would get the gear-heads to pay attention.
Wow, Bubba! You got one them 'lectrical thangs! How fast does it go? C'mon,
 make it burn rubber agin!
