That's fine. But, we should also expect stormy weather, and start
thinking about how we are going to prepare for it!

Even though Tesla is the most successful EV producer in the past 50
years, they've only produced a very small number of cars, for a tiny
sliver of the automotive market. They are a smaller player than Porsche,
Ferrari, etc. (whom the auto companies also basically ignore).

Tesla is also not yet profitable. They've reported about a $6/share loss
over the past year. Their best quarter was only a $0.15/share profit.

The Tesla is a great car, and I'm rooting for them as "my team". But I
also have to be realistic and recognize that their chances of surviving
are still pretty slim.

Except that these standards were gutted immediately after the last
Republican president took office. It happened before; it could happen again.

True; but the auto companies dumped them anyway. Remember, car companies
sell to their *dealers*, not the public. They cater to what their
*dealers* want. And dealers generally do not like or want EVs.

Yes, they will. And none of them can be imported to the USA without
expensive custom re-design and testing.

That's Tesla's market. They can continue to hold that market; but it
won't affect the automotive market in general.

I like EVs! But I'm no 1%er, and will never be able to afford a Tesla.
But I did get a Nissan Leaf, thanks to the deep discounts, rebates, and
tax credits that were available.

Actually, all the automakers had EVs out then, and other states had them
as well (Massachusetts, Georgia, Arizona, etc.) But you will notice that
the winners have essentially re-written history -- the average person's
view is that it never happened.

I believe they *can* stop it. That is why it's important for EVers to
get organized, before we get trampled to death again!

Re: [EVDL] Supermarket EVanglisim

2016-11-13 Thread brucedp5 via EV
Bob's method of EVangelism is what I did when I had my S10 Blazer EV
http://brucedp.0catch.com/blazer/

Only now without an EV, I have to rely on EVs in the shopping center's
parking lot, see
http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/EVangel-about-Leaf-Telsa-S-60-Spark-e-Golf-mild-EVSE-rage-Goog-crash-Super-EVSE-tp4683827.html
( ... I noticed a fingernail-red Tesla-S 60 EV parked in the front row ... )

I too had my EV festooned(adorned) with EV signage (less than others, more
than some). Any layman walking by would know my vehicle was an Electric.

One of the tricks that the 6 local EAA chapter members would do, is have a
flyer box hanging off one of the rolled up windows. This made it easy for
people to get a free 2 sided flyer whether I was there or not, see
https://www.google.com/search?q=outdoor+car+brochure+flyer=LHP=lnms=isch

If you want to make your own flyer with your EAA chapter or local EV group
contact details at the bottom, you could use what the EAA has as a template
to build from
http://www.electricauto.org/?page=flyers

Back when I was working, I found it was easy enough to run ten double sided
flyers off at work without anyone caring as I used that as a functional test
of the copier after I had replenished its paper supply and or toner at the
beginning of my shift.

A one double sided flier sheet was all the public wanted. They could easily
fold it and shove it in their pocket, etc.

Re: [EVDL] Cheap L2 charging in parking places: Bolt EV's In Production

2016-11-13 Thread ROBERT via EV
at
with mass production and reasonable design standards, a magnetic
charging system could be only *slightly* more expensive than a
conductive charging system. However, it would require tight cooperation
between the car companies to keep them compatible. That is a FAR bigger
problem than the engineering challenges.

> This cannot be done with an EVSE system.

Yes, it can. The regulations didn't expect it, but it could be made to
work anyway.

> The system is safer because it is not effected by water
> and is secure from vandalism.

The safety benefits are dubious, since the conductive systems don't
energize the cable until after the connection is made.

And the Magnecharger cable is just as vulnerable to theft and vandalism.

The best setup is just to have a NEMA receptacle on the "charging
station", and the cord and charger in the EV being charged. Unroll your
own code, and plug it in. If it's stolen, your insurance would cover it
like any other act of vandalism (like a broken window, etc.)

> An X10 system (PowerLine Transmission) will not work in an industrial or
> commercial environment

The consumer-grade X10 was optimized to be cheap, not robust. But there
*are* industrial-grade setups that work over the power line.

> RF is not reliable in a structure with high levels of electrical noise

It's reliable enough for a car parked right next to a charging station,
with nothing but air between them.
