Ron Moore discusses how to accomplish effective stabilization of a
roof-resting Electric Plug-In Vehicle.

Topic: Electric Plug-In Vehicle (EV) Stabilization, Part 3

Objective: Accomplish effective stabilization of a roof-resting EV

Task: Given a roof-resting EV with a floorpan-mounted high-voltage
lithium-ion battery, the rescue team shall recognize the unusual
stabilization challenges and be able to effectively adapt their rescue and
stabilization techniques accordingly.

The final part of this three-part series on Electric Plug-In Vehicle (EV)
stabilization offers several stabilization tactics that can be used when an
EV is encountered in a roof-resting position at an incident scene.

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV and the Nissan LEAF used for this research, like other
similar EVs, have a very round, dome-shaped roof and a heavy
floorpan-mounted high-voltage (HV) lithium-ion battery. When rolled into a
roof-resting position, the rounded-roof Mitsubishi settled into an almost
level, horizontal position. In contrast, the Nissan LEAF vehicle assumed a
“front-end down” position.

During the research, two stabilization techniques were found to be effective
for these EVs. A simple stabilization tactic using cribbing may be used, but
using cribbing and struts is the recommended procedure, especially when more
involved extrication work is anticipated.

To stabilize the Mitsubishi EV that assumed an almost level position,
inverted step chocks and wedges worked well and immediately eliminated all
of the vehicle’s forward/rearward rocking action. The cribbing fits into the
curved area where the roof pillars come closest to the ground. This initial
“wedging” technique is advised when beginning stabilization of this
roof-resting EV.

Unlike when a conventional internal engine vehicle rolls over, a
roof-resting EV has its heavy lithium-ion battery directly above the patient
and your extrication work area. Remember, the Tesla battery weighs 1,000
pounds. Even the smaller Chevy Bolt EV has a 600-pound battery mounted below
the floorpan, which would actually be above the patient in a rollover
situation. A more secure stabilization tactic needs to be employed to more
fully stabilize the vehicle and also support the weight of the car and the
HV battery.

Struts would seem logical to be part of the equipment to stabilize a
roof-resting EV, but there is no location along either side of the EVs where
struts could be placed where they would not interfere with door opening and
patient access.

Struts can, however, be used with ratchet straps and clusters to stabilize
and support the EV at the rear after initial cribbing and step chocks are
placed at the front-end A-pillar area. A pair of struts can effectively
stabilize the EV from the rear as well as support the weight of the HV
battery. If the rear hatchback can be opened, that offers additional contact
points for the struts.

To demonstrate how the weight of the HV floorpan-mounted affects vehicle
stability, a roof-resting LEAF was fully stabilized, then all roof pillars
on the passenger’s side of the vehicle were cut through. The vehicle dropped
a half inch during this experiment.

All cribbing and struts were then removed, leaving the LEAF supporting
itself as it rested on its roof. All the roof pillars on the driver’s side
of the vehicle were cut through one at a time. As these cuts were being
done, the vehicle sunk lower and lower with every pillar cut. Eventually,
the EV dropped a total of 8 inches due to the weight of the HV battery
pressing down on the structure of the vehicle.

Roof-resting EVs can be initially stabilized by wedging the front A-pillars
and the rear C- or D-pillar and roofline area. With cribbing at the front,
struts placed at the rear of the EV maintained good overall vehicle
stability and allowed for unobstructed door access on both sides.

When Karen Carter Richards, the publisher of the Houston Forward Times, saw
the orange burst metallic Chevrolet Bolt EV parked in front of the JW
Marriott Las Vegas Resort and Spa, her first impression was “look at this
little, ‘bitty’ car.”

That perception changed when she sat behind the wheel.

“When I got in…it was unbelievable,” said Carter Richards. “You can’t hear
anything, the ride is smooth; it has a very fast takeoff.”

Carter Richards and dozens of other publishers participated in a “ride and
drive” event, presented by Chevrolet, during the 2018 NNPA Mid-Winter
Conference.

Carter Richards, who is more than six-feet tall, said that she was most
surprised by the legroom.

“My legs are very long, I moved the seat all the way back, then I had to
move it forward, because there was so much room,” said Carter Richards. The
Houston publisher also said that the Bolt EV had the “feel” of a much larger
car.

Fred Ligouri, a communications manager for Chevrolet’s electric vehicle (EV)
program, said that the Bolt EV’s unique form factor contributes to that
spacious feel.

“We have more interior volume space for the occupants in a Bolt EV than
you’ll find in a Tesla Model S,” said Ligouri.

The Bolt EV is a 100 percent, pure electric vehicle (EV) and “the first of
its kind: a long-range and affordable EV,” added Ligouri.

Ligouri explained: “Previously, if you were going to buy an EV you would’ve
had to settle for a very high-priced vehicle that would carry the
capabilities of our vehicle or you would have to spend the same amount of
money for a vehicle with one-third to a half of the range.”

Ligouri noted that the Bolt EV gets 238 miles on a single charge and even
though the retail price is $37,495 (with the destination freight charge),
after federal and state tax incentives and other benefits are included,
customers could save about $7,500.

Carole Geary, the publisher of the Milwaukee Courier, said that she was most
impressed by the Bolt’s safety features.

“I think it’s really an amazing car,” said Geary. “The [rear-vision camera]
shows you the traffic behind you, and it has sensors that gives you signals,
if you try to change lanes and there is a car in your blind spot.”

The rear-vision camera comes standard in all Bolt EVs. The premier model
also includes a “Driver Confidence Package” with features like Lane Change
Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Rear Parking
Assist.

Carter Richards said that Chevy’s pursuit of innovation in the electric car
segment is a great idea.

When it comes to a “no-emission” vehicle’s environmental impact, Ligouri
said that there’s no division in wanting an increased quality of life and a
sustainable future for all of our kids.

“The place that you could conceivably do the most good with emission-free
vehicles is in urban areas,” said Ligouri. “For that reason, the Bolt EV is
a really good avenue for increasing sustainability and increasing the
quality of life for all city residents.”

Geary said that any age group would be comfortable driving the Bolt EV, from
baby boomers to millennials.

Carter Richards agreed.

“The Bolt EV has a nice, sporty look,” said Carter Richards. “I can see a
college student driving it and someone like myself driving it, too.”

If the genset is old, it probably doesn't have any elaborate electronic
controls to regulate voltage and frequency. Does it just have some kind
of simple mechanical or electrical governer to set the ICE speed, and
thus the output frequency?

This is an older generator head from a military diesel genset.
It did have controls to adjust the voltage and the frequency, but I haven't dug
into the actual generator head in detail yet.

Found the manuals for this unit. The generator head does have connections for a "DC
Excitor", both stator and rotor.
Seems to expect around 60VDC (from looking at one of the test instructions.)

I do wonder if this could be varied fast enough so that the generator output is
closer to a square wave.

The wound field probably has a lot of inductance, so you won't be able
to change the current fast enough to modulate the output.

One reason for the dreaded "load dump" in generators and alternators is
the large inductance of the field. A load dump occurs when the generator
or alternator is charging at high current, and the load is suddenly
removed. The field inductance causes the field current to remain high
for many milliseconds. So the generator or alternator keeps right on
delivering its maximum power for that time. This causes the output
voltage to spike much higher, and at high current as well. Bang!

]

PG customers can get a $10,000 discount on a new BMW i3 electric vehicle,
for a limited time.

BMW may be angling for a bigger slice of the nation’s largest electric
vehicle market — California — and aiming at some of the same drivers courted
by Tesla.

The German automaker is offering a $10,000 discount on its i3 electric car
for customers of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. through May 31. Buyers need
only show their monthly PG bill to an authorized BMW dealer, and fill-out
a one-page form, to qualify.

BMW has already extended the $10,000 discount to customers of Southern
California Edison, ending on April 30, and did the same for San Diego Gas
and Electric Co. customers last year. In the Northeast, a smaller but
growing EV market, BMW is running the $10,000 promotion with New Jersey
utility PSE

The discount comes strictly from BMW — not from Pacific Gas and Electric Co.
or its customers.

The offer applies both to the all-electric i3 and the i3 REx, which has a
small, range-extending gasoline engine. It does not apply to leases.

The all-electric i3 starts at $44,450, so the discount places the car
squarely in the price range of the $36,620 Chevrolet Bolt, the most popular
electric car in California last year. It’s also in the same range as the
$35,000 Tesla Model 3.

The discount comes after the buyer and dealer have negotiated a price.
California buyers also can receive a $2,500 electric-car rebate from the
state and may be eligible for a federal tax credit worth up to $7,500. In
addition, they can apply to PG for a one-time $500 rebate funded through
California’s low carbon fuel standard.

Check The Driving Radius Before Buying The Kit

If you are interested in electric car conversion kits, they are available
from vendors to use in a do-it-yourself form. You should research the best
types of cars suited for the electric car conversion kit as well as the type
of car to meet your needs. The majority of electric cars can only be driven
between 30 and 70 miles. For those of you who have a daily commute in this
range, an electric car conversion kit for your vehicle makes perfect sense.

Electric car kit

It is also important for you to look at cars that fit your needs when
considering an electric car conversion kit. A light weight sedan is a great
choice for travel while a pickup or van is the likely choice for utility
purposes. There are fancy electric car conversion kits that have been used
in cars for racing and speed accelerations, however this is very rare.

Most electric car conversion kits allow your car to travel up to 25 miles
per hour. You can carry up to four passengers. The cost is less than
$10,000. An electric car conversion kit needs to be well designed and
manufactured. The kit may include the motor, best brake controllers, battery
chargers, and a fiberglass car body. You will need to replace the batteries
each year for a cost of approximately $300. However, this is still much
cheaper than the cost of gasoline, anti-freeze, hoses, filters, belts,
radiator repairs, and the cost of engine tune ups in regular gas powered
vehicles.

There are currently very few electric vehicle available. The choice to
convert your gasoline driven vehicle into an electric one with the use of an
electric car conversion kit is an excellent one. This will be a fun
experience that is rewarding and exhilarating. However, it will also be a
very challenging experience. Electric vehicles don’t pollute the environment
so they are a very good alternative to the gas driven cars. Before choosing
an electric car conversion kit, there are several factors to consider.

Start by considering the amount of miles you drive in a given day. You will
need to see how using an electric vehicle fits into that routine. There are
certain tools and supplies that you will need to install that conversion kit
as well as a place to complete the conversion. You will need to be familiar
with the components involved and the proper way to remove the ICE components
to replace them with electric vehicle components. The installation of the
motor, components, battery box, and batteries will take time and attention
to detail. There is also the installing of the propulsion wiring, auxiliary
power system and the traction pack to display the control. It is a good idea
to test each item before putting the electric vehicle into use.

Found the manuals for this unit. The generator head does have connections for
a "DC Excitor", both stator and rotor.
Seems to expect around 60VDC (from looking at one of the test instructions.)

I do wonder if this could be varied fast enough so that the generator output is
closer to a square wave.
