Daimler says that smart car brand is going all-electric in Europe after

Daimler made the smart car brand all-electric in North America last year and
now CEO Dieter Zetsche says that they plan to make the same transition in
Europe, a much bigger market for the brand, by the end of the decade.

The CEO made the announcement during the company’s annual meeting in Germany
last week:

“Daimler also flipped the switch in the field of electric mobility long
ago: Mercedes-Benz will offer at least one electrified version in each
segment by 2022. smart is already completely electric in North America and
the changeover will take place in Europe by 2020. At the same time, we are
electrifying our vans, trucks and buses. And we have many more plans – also
going beyond our products,”

The moves follow Daimler bringing the electric smart cars under their new
Mercedes-Benz EQ family under which they plan to launch the first Mercedes
all-electric vehicles built to be electric from the ground up next year.

Daimler already did the transition in the US last year and it resulted in
losing about two-thirds of US dealerships.

Once they stopped supplying gas-powered smart cars, only 27 of the 85
Mercedes-Benz dealership in the US that were carrying Smart cars decided to
keep selling the sub-brand.

The remaining dealerships are mainly located in California, New York, and
other states with zero-emission vehicle mandates.

Prior to the move, Daimler confirmed pricing of the 2017 Smart Fortwo
electric drive and it received a small price reduction to a starting MSRP of
$23,800 before EV incentives. The 4-seat option is still $28,000.

Electrek’s Take

It feels like they did the change in the US first because the risks were
lower since the smart cars weren’t already selling very well in the country.
Sales had tumbled to a crawl over the last few years.

On the other hand, they have a healthy market of about 100,000 vehicles per
year in Europe.

Therefore, a move to all-electric there over the next 2 years is extremely
more significant.

Hopefully, it will come with an updated electric powertrain, which I think
is likely now that the electric smart cars are under the Mercedes EQ brand.

As we previously reported, we think that Daimler, the parent company of both
the Mercedes-Benz and Smart brands, is among the legacy automakers most
invested in a push toward electrification, mostly with the Mercedes-Benz
brand. The company secured manufacturing capacity to produce compact
electric vehicles in Germany and unveiled its new battery factory.

The German automaker also recently announced the acceleration of its
electric car plans by 3 years and that they will spend $11 billion on 10
models by 2022. The first new all-electric car is expected to hit the market
in 2019.

XING Mobility’s Miss R Story
]

It looks like when Tesla launched its next-generation Roadster, it might
have set the bar for new hypercars coming out since several companies have
been benchmarking their upcoming vehicles based on some of the specs that
Tesla released.

Now Taipei-based startup Xing Mobility unveils its new electric hypercar
today after having compared the specs with Tesla’s new electric vehicle.

Xing Mobility originally unveiled a working prototype of its hypercar ‘MISS
R’ right after Tesla’s unveiling of the Tesla Semi, which also happened to
be the unveiling of the next-gen Roadster.

They released the following specs and compared them to Tesla’s new Roadster
: 0-100 km/h in 1.8 seconds (Roadster: 2.0 seconds), 0-200 km/h in 5.1
seconds (Roadster: unreleased but 0 to 161 km/h in 4.2 seconds) and a max
speed of over 270km/h (Roadster: over 400 km/h). They didn’t disclose the
range, while Tesla announced over 620 miles of range (~1,000 km) for the new
Roadster ...

Now they say that they are unveiling the full vehicle, which they claim is
the “world’s first electric supercar with on-road and off-road
capabilities.”

They are sticking to the original specs that they unveiled last year even
though the vehicle still doesn’t have an interior.

Xing also hasn’t demonstrated the insane acceleration that they are claiming
but they did release some footage of that “off-road” capability:

They claim that they achieved this kind of performance with a 1-Megawatt
(1,341hp) powertrain equipped with 4 independent electric motors powered by
a battery pack of their own design.

It’s made of 98 “modular blocks” with each 43 cells, which are submerging
directly in “3M™ Novec™ 7200 Engineered Fluid”. They claim that is results
in “one of the highest power density EV battery packs on the market.”

The battery pack system is also swappable. The company describes it:

“In displaying the vehicle elevated above its 4116-cell, 98-module
battery pack, the company also plan to showcase its extremely fast battery
swap technology that sees the entire battery enclosure exchanged within 5
minutes. As well as tackling the challenge of range and charging restraints,
the vehicle is designed for exceptional driving experiences previously
unthinkable in gasoline vehicles. Fully race-enabled, its battery-swap
technology and dual-personality setup is primed for track sprints, hill
climbs, and endurance races alike.”

While they have been talking about bringing ‘MISS R’ to limited production
with 20 units to be built in 2019 with a price starting at $1 million USD,
Xing Mobility says that the powertrain is the real product and they want to
leverage the development for other vehicles – starting with commercial
vehicles.

XING Mobility’s Co-founder and CTO Azizi Tucker said:

“The commercial vehicle market is primed for a conversion to electric
drivetrains due to functional needs, increasing emissions requirements and
public noise reduction. However, this market is currently extremely
underserved with many electric vehicle technology manufacturers focusing
only on passenger vehicles”.

It’s why ‘MISS R’ will be showcased at the AutoTronics Taipei [.tw] show
alongside a 3.5 ton electric transit vehicle referred to internally by the
team as “Mr T”.

They haven’t released any specs about the truck other than saying that its
powertrain consists of “6,300 lithium-ion 18650 cells in 150 reconfigurable
and immersive-cooled battery modules and equipped with a 350V high power
density induction motor.”

The company wants to use its same “LEGO-like” battery pack technology to
electrify several kinds of vehicles.

Electrek’s Take

It’s interesting how quickly other companies are using the new Tesla
Roadster as a benchmark when unveiling their own hypercar. It looks like the
Roadster has the new numbers to beat.

But in this case, it doesn’t look like it will actually by a competitor.

Instead, they are mainly focusing on their battery pack technology, which
kind of reminds me of Kreisel Electric in Austria.

Unfortunately, we don’t know enough about their tec

The small problem is that their motors have lousy thermal efficiency, and even
lousier thermal dissipation. Nonetheless, they’re inductive, and there weren’t

not so bad that you wouldn’t use them, just bad enough that you wouldn’t choose
them now that there are better options.

The big problem is that they try to “pick favorites” among their customers, and
choose one among several that are competing with each other, and try to
bankrupt the rest. That’s been particularly obvious in the aviation space,
after they decided that Airbus was their customer-of-choice, and all of their
other longstanding customers would suddenly have deals revoked or not honored.

With us, they were very buddy-buddy and sending biz-dev folks around to try to
pile on additional deals, while ignoring Azure Dynamics, and refusing to sell
them hardware they were happily shipping to us. Azure Dynamics went bankrupt.
We bought most of the remains. Then Siemens decided they didn’t like us, and
refused to send software that was already contracted _and paid for in full_,
and said “sue us… in Germany.” The problem with that being that they’re
essentially immune from lawsuit in Germany, and German law puts the full cost
of the defense of an unsuccessful lawsuit onto the plaintiff. So Siemens just
throws their own staff counsel at it, running up the bill as quickly as they
can, until the plaintiff bails out because they can’t afford to pay for both
sides of the case.

So we’re out less than a half-million in the actual cost of garbage inverters
and such that couldn’t be used without the software they never shipped, but
lost several million more, and probably three years of time in the friction of
trying to deal with them. We’d have been far, far better off if we’d never
heard of them, and just started our process three years later, after there were
more component suppliers in the market.

And that story is pretty typical of people in the EV space who’ve tried to deal
with them. The only success I can think of off-hand is the original Ford
Ranger; Ford’s big enough and canny enough not to get taken. But you didn’t
see them wanting to deal with Siemens directly again, either.

To my observation, German business culture is just really, really corrupt.
Siemens is constantly getting investigated for different kinds of fraud, and
the whole dieselgate thing seemed very typical to me. We’re sticking with
suppliers in the US and Japan and the Netherlands and so forth, going forward.

[EVDL] EVLN: Musk sez 2e-Motor Tesla-3 On Track> (super-sedans= more$)

Elon Musk Confirms That Dual-Motor Tesla Model 3 On Track For Mid-2018
Delivery

In a recent Twitter storm, Tesla CEO Elon Musk provided more details about
dual-motor Model 3 delivery timing, noting that it would “probably” be ready
in July of this year.

Elon also noted that the critical milestone he and team Tesla are looking at
before adding dual motors to the mix is the Model 3 production ramp reaching
5,000 cars/week at the current level of complexity. The company doesn’t want
to add any more complexity before hitting that target. Tesla has a long list
of features that will eventually come to the Model 3, including Ludicrous
mode, dual motors, and the most anticipated option — the Standard Range
battery, which is what ultimately gets the car down to its base price of
$35,000.

Today, if you want to finalize your order, your Model 3 must be configured
with the Long Range battery, a pricey $9,000 option, and the Premium
interior package, which is $5,000, making today’s base price Model 3 almost
$50,000.

It’s worth noting that the timing Elon is referencing is the timing for the
very first people in line for a Model 3 reservation — “probably July” is
when they will have the opportunity to order a Model 3 with dual motors. I
made 2 reservations just minutes after Tesla first started taking orders. As
a Tesla owner in California with a very early reservation, one of my
reservations has an option for “Mid 2018” for the “Dual Motor All-Wheel
Drive” option.

Sliding the scale back a bit, my second reservation, in which I lose my
Tesla owner status since I “only” owned one Tesla vehicle, shows timing for
the Dual Motor option slipping to Late 2018. That’s for a reservation made
at 10:40 am Pacific time, just 40 minutes after Tesla started taking
reservations … and nearly 6 hours after getting in line.

Looking at sales volumes and anecdotal updates from friends and online
commenters about the features they’re looking for, it seems the vast
majority of them are on hold not for dual motors but for the standard (220
mile) battery pack. Having said that, the fact that Tesla is waiting to
achieve its first significant production milestone before adding any further
complexity is reassuring. Cranking out 5,000 Model 3 super-sedans per week
means 260,000 vehicles per year moving forward — and that many more electric
vehicles on the road.

I just hope for their sake that they don’t try to use Siemens components to
actually produce something.
