A senior fire officer has praised members of the public who rallied to help
at the scene of a fatal Dunedin crash yesterday, before emergency services
arrived.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand Senior Station Officer Mark Leonard said
several members of the public had provided "some really good assistance
before emergency services arrived'', including by providing initial first
aid for the person in the vehicle.

Other members of the public had also worked to try to stabilise the crashed
vehicle to stop it from tipping over, Mr Leonard said.

A motorist died after a late model Nissan Leaf electric car hit a pole near
the top of Stuart St, Dunedin, yesterday evening.

Alerted at 5.20pm, firefighters from the Rosyln and Willowbank fire stations
attended and began urgent first aid treatment of the injured driver.

The crash happened on the inside lane of the uphill section of the street,
about 100m below the Roslyn overbridge.

A smashed Kaikorai Valley traffic sign was lying on the footpath beside the
lighting pole which had apparently been struck by the car.

Police last night confirmed the motorist's death and said the police serious
crash unit was investigating the cause of the crash.

After most other officers had left, an officer with a light on his helmet,
and a supported by a police wagon, continued a more detailed study of the
cordoned-off scene.

Mr Leonard said the Willowbank fire rescue tender had earlier been placed
close to the car, to stabilise the vehicle "so it didn't roll'' and prevent
it from moving, while rescuers helped the injured person inside, Mr Leonard
said.

It is understood the motorist was a man.

"Further information regarding the deceased will not be released until next
of kin notifications have taken place,'' a police spokesman said.

Mr Leonard said firefighters were able to remove the injured person without
having to use jaws of life cutting gear, and a firefighter had also
accompanied the injured person to Dunedin Hospital via ambulance to further
help with care.

It had initially been difficult to approach the accident scene because of
"quite heavy'' traffic in the area, but the Willowbank rescue tender was
able to arrive by driving on the wrong side of Stuart St, he said.

Police, St John Ambulance and firefighters had co-operated well in a bid to
save the motorist, he said.

One nearby resident went out to investigate after hearing "a loud bang''.

Another resident in the area also "heard a bang and some screeching (of
metal or tyres)''.

"I didn't think it was anything, but then I heard the sirens after that,''
he said.

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, the two uphill lanes of Stuart St
were cordoned off by police, between the Moana Pool area and the top of the
street.

At least three police cars with flashing lights blocked off key entry
points, and three more police vehicles were at the immediate crash scene.

Pininfarina reveals more of electric Bugatti fighter, future plans

If you’re a storied brand waiting to break free, your best strategy is to
make a big splash.

Such is the situation of Pininfarina, which plans to launch a range of four
new cars under its own name between 2020 and 2025, company executives told
Motor Authority in a private meeting in New York on Thursday.

As a small, Italian custom styling and coachbuilding house that sometimes
could include its own badge on Ferraris, Lancias, and Alfa Romeos, that’s a
big leap for Pininfarina. “Pinin,” in Italian, means “small,” and there’s
nothing small about what Pininfarina is trying to accomplish.

With money from Indian automaker Mahindra, which purchased Pininfarina in
2015, the company plans to launch a new automotive brand with its own line
of products, Pininfarina Automobili, alongside its historic styling and
coachbuilding operation.

Pininfarina is known for designing beautiful cars, but the executives
expressed frustration that the company’s designs historically have fallen to
the mercy of traditional automakers who decide whether or not to build them.
That’s the motivation behind launching Pininfarina Automobili to produce its
own line of cars. The only car ever sold under the Pininfarina name before
was the 1980-1982 Pininfarina Spider 2000, a continuation edition of the
long-running Fiat 124 Spider, a Pininfarina design from the 1960s that Fiat
discontinued.

The company’s first new car, code-named the PF0, will be an electric
hypercar designed to compete with the Bugatti Chiron that the company will
first publicly display at the 2019 Geneva auto show. A small group of
investors, journalists, and ultra-wealthy potential customers will get an
early look at a model next month during Monterey Car Week.

The carbon fiber PF0 will blast from 0-62 mph in less than two seconds and
0-186 mph in less than five seconds, according to the company. One version
will have a top speed of almost 250 mph. The car will use four independent,
axle-mounted motors to deliver active torque vectoring.

It will have a range of more than 300 miles “when you’re not driving it on
the Nurburgring,” CEO Michael Perschke said. That would give it a battery
capacity of roughly 100 kilowatt-hours. Unlike most modern electric cars,
the battery will not lie flat under the floor, but will be confined to the
center tunnel. Designers couldn’t replicate a hypercar's feeling of a low
center of gravity with seats mounted above a flat battery pack.

Perschke says the company will stick to building electric cars “because it
no longer works to launch an aspirational brand with a gas engine. You have
to start in the 21st century,” he said. He agreed with other automotive CEOs
that the industry will change more in the next 15 years than it did in the
last 50.

The company only expects to sell 35 to 40 PF0s in the U.S. and 125 to 150
globally. Deliveries are due to begin in late 2020.

Perschke spent years as head of global sales and strategy at Audi and had
previous experience at Mercedes-Benz and Mitsubishi.

“We think the company needs to be bold enough, and the name is bold enough
for a top-down strategy,” he said. The company will start with the most
expensive model. As a competitor to the Bugatti Chiron, that would put the
price somewhere between $2 million and $3 million.

The second, unnamed model will be a “lifestyle” vehicle or crossover SUV in
the vein of the Bentley Bentayga, or more accurately, the Lucid Air or the
Faraday Future.

Pininfarina Automobili is not looking to build its own cars from the ground
up, but expects for higher volume models to use contract manufacturers and
to partner with companies to provide battery packs, motors, and maybe most
importantly state-of-the-art electronic connectivity.

Design has been placed in the hands of Luca Borgogno, who has worked at the
company for 13 years and spent two years at Lamborghini.

The cars will share a full-width headlight band reminiscent of the Ferrari
Daytona, updated to look more like a modern, white fiber-optic light tube.
The rear will share a similar treatment in red, though the PF0 will have two
separate, horizontal “wings” separated by what looks like a giant NACA duct
to allow air to flow out the rear.

Pininfarina was in New York to support Mahindra’s efforts in the latest
round of the Formula E Championship. The fourth executive the company is
bringing onto its team will be ex-Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld, who will
be responsible for developing the PF0’s chassis dynamics.

Perschke said he expects the company to find success based on its brand
heritage.

“Wealthy buyers like to tell a story,” he said. With Pininfarina’s heritage
of des

BlackFly claims to be the world’s first ultralight all-electric fixed-wing

BlackFly - Flight
]

  - BlackFly has more of a UFO look to it than other VTOLs and personal
flying vehicles out there.

  - Leng told CBS News he hopes BlackFly will be on sale as soon as next
year for the price of an SUV.

Yet another startup has popped up promising to deliver the future filled
with flying cars that we've been promised for generations. BlackFly is an
all-electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) personal aerial vehicle
from a Silicon Valley via Canada company called Opener.

To call it a flying car is actually not quite correct, as it has no wheels,
but it is the latest in a lengthening line of personal flying vehicles that
aim to compete with cars as a primary way of getting around.

“Opener is re-energizing the art of flight with a safe and affordable flying
vehicle that can free its operators from the everyday restrictions of ground
transportation,” said designer and CEO Marcus Leng.

BlackFly has more of a UFO look to it than other VTOLs and personal flying
vehicles out there. Utilizing eight small rotors spread across two parallel
wings, it takes off by sort of rolling on and off the ground via its rounded
belly, which makes it look a little bit like an old school rocking horse.

Opener says it designed BlackFly with "triple-modular redundant flight
systems, control surfaces, and sensors" to ensure safety and has flown over
ten thousands miles of test flights. There's also auto-landing and
return-to-home features to add extra usability. The company says the single
passenger, joystick-operated system requires no formal licensing in the U.S.
to fly, but Opener will mandate that users take the FAA Private Pilot
written examination and complete its own operator training.

Remember those videos where people would run in front of cars or lorries to
fake an accident in order to claim for insurance? Those videos were
entertaining as they run towards the vehicle before throwing themselves on
the hood of the car while the dashboard camera captured everything. Sadly,
Malaysia has also been included in this loop no thanks to this guy!

A netizen, Ng Jhen Hau took to Facebook on July 10 to share his encounter
with an insurance scammer around SS2 mall area. He wrote in his post,

“(He) came from the wrong side of the road. I managed to stop in time,
he came and ‘touched’ my car, stood up then lied on the road.”

According to Ng, the man was riding an electric scooter on the opposite side
of the road. After Ng told him that he had a dash cam, which was a lie, the
man immediately stood back up and sat on his electric scooter, claiming that
he’s a handicap.

After Ng’s post went viral, he decided to lodge a police report the
following day for his own safety.

“I was proven to have my right of way, the guy in the post is totally at
fault by heading the wrong direction. As for him being cheating on victim’s
money by acting OKU or not, police will investigate further. Thank you.”

Ng has fully cooperated with the police on this matter and he got some
advice from the police to share.

Electric scooter falls under the same category as bicycles. It must follow
the direction of the road, cannot ride opposite the road (if collided with a
car, the car is not at fault). Electric scooters are limited to 25km/h and
do not need a licence to ride on the road (but not on the highway).

If the driver or a motorcyclist crash into a person without a bike or
electric scooter, then the driver is at fault. For this reason, dash cams
are encouraged to prevent people who want to cause fake accidents and blame
the drivers.

You’ve heard it guys, even the police are encouraging in getting a dashboard
camera, it’s for your own safety. Remember to stay alert on the road, and if
you encounter any situation like this, remember to stand your ground ...

World premiere of Einride’s latest product
]

Every segment of ground transportation is gradually being converted to
electric propulsion and now a startup is going after logging trucks.

Today, Swedish tech start-up Einride unveiled The T-log, an autonomous and
all-electric logging truck.

The vehicle was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK today
and it is building on Einride’s previously unveiled T-Pod truck.

Robert Falck, CEO of Einride, commented at the unveiling:

“Einride is constantly pushing the boundaries of autonomous and
all-electric vehicles in our ambition to lead the transition to a
sustainable transportation system. With the T-log, we’ve created a vehicle
that can withstand the rigours of a demanding environment. It is uncharted
territory for us, but also an enormous market for battery-powered AVs.”

The company claims that it can travel 200 km (124 miles) on a single charge
thanks to a 200 kWh battery pack.

As for the autonomous driving technology, Einride says that it is using the
Nvidia Drive self-driving platform and that it can not only work
autonomously but also be remote-controlled.

They explained how it enables a design without a cab:

“It has no driver’s cab but can be remote-controlled by a human
operator, from hundreds of miles away using Phantom Auto teleoperation
safety technology designed to provide robust, minimal latency
telecommunications even with 4G. No driver’s cab enables a smaller vehicle,
increased loading capacity, greater flexibility, lower production costs,
lower operating costs and optimized energy consumption, allowing the T-log
to run solely on batteries, even in difficult environments.”

Einride hasn’t released a timeline for production or a price target, but
they mentioned that the lack of driver’s cab will make the truck cheaper to
produce.

Here’s a spec list released by the company:

The cars will be cruising around the San Francisco Bay Area.

In late March, Waymo announced that it would receive a number of Jaguar
I-Pace electric SUVs [
https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/auto/2019-jaguar-i-pace/preview/
] in anticipation of a future self-driving ride-hailing service. Now, those
I-Paces are starting to roll in.

Waymo announced today that it has received its first three I-Paces from
Jaguar Land Rover. In fact, these three are the first I-Paces in the US
outside of Jaguar's own fleet. The full Waymo livery we saw in the initial
partnership announcement isn't on display quite yet -- instead, the one car
we've seen sports a sedate gray paint job with Waymo lettering by the rear
wheel. Roadshow's Slack channel is split on whether or not the wheels are
cool (I think they are).

For the time being, these cars are for development purposes only. The three
I-Paces will drive around the San Francisco Bay Area, scooping up data about
its roads. The goal is to eventually introduce the I-Paces into Waymo's
upcoming autonomous ride-hailing operation, which should happen in 2020.
Until then, the company will still rely on its fleet of Chrysler Pacifica
minivans, which will form the initial backbone of its ride-hailing service.

When the partnership first came about, Waymo said it pledged to buy up to
20,000 I-Paces [
https://www.cnet.com/news/waymo-jaguar-ipace-self-driving-electric-suv/
] by 2022, which is quite the number. Jaguar won't be supplying Waymo with
all that extraneous hardware -- it will merely serve as the platform on
which Waymo will affix the additional hardware and software necessary to
enable true automation.

Waymo doesn't plan to stop at ride hailing, either. The company wants to get
its self-driving platform into three other arenas, as well -- delivery and
logistics, public transit connections and personal ownership.

It's actually a complicated questions, with pluses and minuses on both
sides.

Lead-acid is readily available, safe, simple, and cheap. You don't need
a BMS or special charger, so you save money there as well. AGMs or 12v
floodeds won't last long (200-500 cycles). 6v floodeds, gels, and big
industrial floodeds can last significantly longer (700-2000 cycles).
They are easy to recycles. The downsides are the weight, and floodeds
are messy.

Lithium is lighter (thus the same weight gives you more range). They
offer the promise of longer life; but that assumes you get premium ones,
and add a good charger and BMS, and don't "murder" them early from
misuse. They are significantly more expensive, especially when a new
charger and BMS are needed. Instead of corrosion, fire is a serious concern.

Of course, price for either option depends heavily on whether you are
buying new, or used/surplus/cheap junk.

Yes, it now seems pretty obvious. Especially with the salvaged
Leaf/Volt modules appearing. Lithium can be found at about the same
price per kwh as flooded lead. For the same capacity, lithium will
weigh about 1/3, noticeably increasing performance. Lithium is likely to
last several times as long as lead. Lithium generally does not have
much sag during discharge, again increasing performance. Lithium will
not subject your car to an acid mist which ruins electric connections
and turns steel into powder.
