[EVDL] BYD's(style.cn) inflated range ratings bite them in the arse
https://electrek.co/2019/05/24/byd-indianapolis-electric-bus-range/ BYD installing wireless charging in Indianapolis to boost disappointing range of its electric buses May. 24th 2019 [image https://i2.wp.com/electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/05/indygobydbus.jpg e-bus ] Electric bus maker BYD has to install and pay for a wireless charging infrastructure upgrade in Indianapolis after its buses experienced “lower-than-expected distances on one charge” during testing. Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation IndyGo announced it reached an agreement with BYD to get the new infrastructure. BYD will install wireless charging hardware for the buses, in addition to three wireless inductive charging pads along bus routes. During testing, IndyGo realized low temperatures were causing a dramatic dropoff in predicted range. Justin Stuehrenberg, IndyGo vice president of capital projects and planning, said: “We anticipated that vehicle range would depend on temperature, but the contract requires a 275-mile range at 0 degrees. Our team identified several options to address the issue and worked closely with BYD to determine the most feasible resolution. At the same time, we made it clear to the company they must be accountable to our contract. Numerous test days this spring resulted in range performance at and above the contractually required 275 miles on a single charge. To date, the best range of any one test was 307 miles on a single charge.” Many of those tests didn’t approach the required 275 miles, usually ending somewhere in the low 200-mile range, as the range report from IndyGo reveals. On one frigid day, range was limited to 152 miles. BYD’s buses will now periodically charge for 10-20 minutes at the three wireless locations. IndyGo claims it can be done without interrupting service, as drivers will take scheduled breaks with no passengers on board during those times. This isn’t the only time BYD’s buses have encountered range issues. Albuquerque opted to “reject and return” 15 BYD electric buses last year. The buses experienced range, braking, and electrical issues, the Albuquerque Journal reported. Albuquerque then decided to order diesel buses. Indianapolis is pushing forward with the wireless charging plan instead. Stuehrenberg said a bus system in Washington state uses a similar wireless system that works in any weather, according to an IndyStar report. IndyGo’s Red Line is aiming to be the nation’s first battery-electric bus rapid transit route, and it’s set to launch Sept. 1. IndyGo plans to operate a 100 percent electric bus fleet by 2035. Electrek’s Take We’d like to stress that this sort of thing is not a problem for all-electric buses, but it does seem to be a bit of a problem for BYD. The Chinese manufacturer has sold many buses to other countries, as well — see our Latin America electric bus update from earlier today. We’re hoping the manufacturer can resolve its issues — not due to any sort of allegiance to that particular company, but because we don’t need more obstacles to widespread bus adoption, especially in the US. Any repeat of Albuquerque would be a big setback. Re: [EVDL] BYD's(style.cn) inflated range ratings bite them in the arse
Anybody that drives an EV, even a Volt that is a series hybrid realize the cold temperature limitations, especially if you like to keep it warm and cozy on cold days. I get 46 miles EV on my 2014 Volt on the best days, 24 miles on the coldest nastiest days when I like to keep the car warm and toasty. Not a problem for me since I commute 21 miles and plug in at work and I also plug in at home with 240V so I never use gas. My best guess is this BYD range was estimated by sales and marketing while the engineers were cringing in the corner knowing it was complete BS, but the accounting department and upper management looking for higher returns on investment realized range needed to be increased to meet contracts with bus fleets that required the higher range, regardless of them actually needing them. The good news is that the majority of bus manufactures see the writing on the wall and are planning for an all electric fleet knowing that will be demanded soon by many fleet orders. The immediate future for bus transit is electric and most manufactures are already gearing up for that. With the advancements in batteries, motors and controls, most fleet operators realize that electric is cheaper to maintain than diesel or natural gas. The transitions will not happen overnight, been when the people paying for overall cost of fleet operation is much cheaper on electric they will switch, and it's coming soon < 5 years. [EVDL] EVLN: BYD 8R class8 rear-loading garbage e-truck Seattle-WA
https://arstechnica.com/cars/2019/05/seattle-makes-history-with-electric-garbage-truck/ Seattle makes history with electric garbage truck 5/22/2019 Jonathan M. Gitlin [image https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Recology_1-800x609.jpg This is Recology's new BYD 8R, the first electric rear-loading class 8 garbage truck in the US ] Recology has taken delivery of its first BYD 8R rear-loading class 8 garbage truck. If you live in Seattle, your scheduled garbage pickup might be about to get a lot quieter. Recology, a West Coast waste management company, has just taken the delivery of its first fully electric garbage trucks. The vehicle is a class 8 truck—meaning the heaviest—made by BYD, with New Way supplying the Viper rear-loading garbage truck body. It's also apparently the first electric class 8 rear-loader in the country and the first of two that Recology ordered last year. The BYD's specs make for very different reading compared to the average electric vehicles we cover. The powertrain is a 320kW (430hp), 1101Nm (812ft-lbs) electric motor, supplied by a 295kWh battery pack. However, it does have to carry around a truck with a 21,605lb (9,800kg) curb weight, and it can be optioned to a gross vehicle weight of either 57,500lbs (26,082kg) or 66,000lbs (29,937kg). (Interestingly, the photo BYD sent us has the GVW at 50,000lbs on the door.) All that mass means the truck is limited to a 65mph (104km/h) top speed and a range of 56 miles (90km) and 600 pickups. Recharging the truck doesn't take as long as you think, despite all those kWh—nine hours connected to a 33kW AC outlet. The 8R supports either 120kW or 240kW DC fast charging, which takes 2.5 hours or 1.5 hours to recharge, respectively. I admit, the fact that this is the US' first electric rear-loader surprises me. Just as with passenger vehicles, some heavy vehicle use cases are better suited to electrification than others. And collecting the garbage is probably one of the most ideal. Route distances tend to be short and feature plenty of starting and stopping. The instant torque of an EV powertrain certainly helps with the starting part, particularly when it's a vehicle this heavy, and regenerative braking means each stop is a way to recapture some energy. Like passenger buses and port haulers, garbage trucks also spend plenty of their workday idling, which isn't something EVs worry about. An electric powertrain also vibrates a lot less than a diesel one, so wear and tear over its service life ought to be better than a fossil-fuel-powered equivalent. Despite this, electric garbage trucks are still few and far between. BYD's main competitor is Motiv Power Systems, which has sold small fleets of class 8 side-loading garbage trucks to Los Angeles and Sacramento, California. Wrightspeed, which was also making hybrid-electric garbage trucks—featured in this article from 2015—appears to have gone dormant, despite a contract to supply the New Zealand cities of Auckland and Wellington. And recently, Volvo announced a battery electric garbage truck, the FE Electric, although it appears to be limited to the European market. For example, the length difference between the models will be around 200 mm, which means that the Outlander needs to be slightly longer, while the ASX needs to be shorter. That way Mitsubishi will achieve differentiation similar to Nissan's X-Trail, Qashqai, and Juke. “Today we aren’t in an ideal position, with our SUVs close in size, but in the next 18 months you will start to see a strategy that separates them out,” The second thing is that the Japanese manufacturer intends to introduce more plug-ins: ... ASX to get an all-electric option ... “We will not have a unique nameplate, but instead offer the appropriate electrification options for the vehicles and how people will use them,” Mitsubishi is also considering the introduction of the next-generation Mirage in conventional and electrified versions. [EVDL] EVLN: Triumph,Williams e-motorcycle alliance
https://newatlas.com/triumph-williams-electric-motorcycles/59784/ Triumph and Williams form alliance to start building electric motorcycles May 22, 2019 Loz Blain [images https://img.newatlas.com/triumph-williams-electric-motorcycles-1.jpg?auto=format%2Ccompress&fit=max&q=60&w=1000&s=f2fe45edf032953208e8138618841aa5 Triumph is preparing to get into the electric vehicle business, and has formed a government-sponsored alliance with Williams Advanced Engineering, Integral Powertrain Limited and WMG from the University of Warwick to get things moving(Credit: Triumph Motorcycles) ] Team Britain has begun assembling its forces to join the battle for electric motorcycling supremacy. Now, in a government-supported push to develop electric motorcycle capabilities, Triumph and Williams Advanced Engineering have entered an alliance with Integral Powertrain and WMG. "Project Triumph TE-1" will be a two-year effort, partially funded by the UK government in the hopes that this alliance can place the UK in a position to compete in an emerging electric motorcycle market. Here's how each group's contributions will break down: Triumph will lead the effort, providing all the "cycle" parts of the motorcycle prototypes as well as specifying what is needed from the electric powertrain. It'll also get involved in the design and integration of regenerative braking and advanced safety systems. Williams Advanced Engineering will design, develop, produce and integrate a lightweight battery pack, battery management unit and vehicle control unit. Integral Powertrain's e-Drive division is in charge of the motor, a custom-built unit with high power density and a silicon carbide inverter integrated into the motor housing. WMG, at the University of Warwick, will be concentrating on commercialization issues, modeling and simulating future market needs. And Innovate UK, a government agency founded to promote science and technology, will provide government support and administer funding. If this partnership can get more electric motorcycles onto the road, it'll be a win for various government agencies tasked with reducing road congestion and vehicle emissions. The overall goal here is to develop each partner's capabilities in a motorcycle-specific context, while putting Triumph in a position to get something electric onto the market within a few years. "We see a Triumph electric powertrain as a significant requirement alongside our signature twin and triple cylinder engines," says Triumph Chief Product Officer Steve Sargent. "As part of our electric motorcycle initiative, Project Triumph TE-1 represents an exciting collaboration that will provide valuable input into our future line-up." So, we won't be seeing anything we can sling our leg over for some time yet, but in the meantime it's interesting to speculate what an electric Triumph might look like. It'll be hard to give it the kind of retro heritage look that drives much of the company's catalog, given the motor-centric design that tends to entail. The easiest fit might be to hide a generally fairly boxy and unattractive electric powertrain underneath a fairing. But the greatest win for the industry in general might come if this alliance can find a way to make an electric motor and battery pack actually look actively awesome. Motorcycle people in general love a beautiful motor, with some visible mechanics to it. There might not be much in the way of moving parts to enjoy with electric motors, but we suspect once they start looking cool, they'll start capturing the imagination of the enthusiast market. https://electrek.co/2019/05/28/chevron-secret-campaign-electric-cars/ Chevron lobbyist pushes secretive campaign against electric cars in Arizona May. 28th 2019 Phil Dzikiy [images https://i0.wp.com/electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/05/evgochevron.jpg share https://twitter.com/Court_Rich/status/1129521190718980096 Court Rich @Court_Rich What leadership looks like: Group rep’ing @Microsoft @Nike @Starbucks @lyft and others urges strong mandatory renewable standards in AZ: https://images.edocket.azcc.gov/docketpdf/198008.pdf … What corporate rent seeking looks like: @Chevron trying to use AstroTurf to stop AZ EV growth: https://images.edocket.azcc.gov/docketpdf/E00802.pdf … 5:56 PM - May 17, 2019 ] Oil and gas company Chevron recently announced that it’s bringing electric vehicle chargers to its gas stations — meanwhile, one of its lobbyists is spurring a fight against EV infrastructure in Arizona. A Chevron lobbyist is persuading retirees of the company in Arizona to push back against electric car policies in the state, the Arizona Republic reports. As the article notes, these Chevron retirees are using a form letter designed to urge Arizona Corporation Commissioners “not to require electric companies here to build electric car charging stations.” The Chevron retirees are also not identifying themselves as such, which is what’s causing the controversy. Chevron lobbyist Marian Catedral-King sent the “call to action” form letter to Sel Larsen, president of the Arizona retirees group. But David Newell of Scottsdale alerted the commissioners to the effort with his own email. It seems the letter got into the hands of the wrong person — Newell worked for Unocal on geothermal energy projects, but “because that company was acquired by Chevron, he is considered a Chevron retiree.” As Newell wrote to commissioners about Chevron’s efforts: I emphatically do not share their point of view. Many of the points raised in these attachments are irrelevant, inaccurate or misleading. They are raised in service of preserving the status quo of entrenched interests. These businesses perceive electric vehicles as a serious threat to their business model and are attempting to recruit those who might be seen by you as disinterested parties to promote their interests. You can read both the lobbyist letter and Newell’s full response here. As Newell told the Arizona Republic, “It’s within their rights to make their position known. It’s unfair to enlist people without clearly identifying who they are.” Catedral-King did not respond to questions, but Larsen did speak with the Arizona Republic, saying the retiree group was “not opposed to environmental issues at all if they are fair.” He also said, “If utilities are forced to provide infrastructure, then I pay for their choice of cars. The government already subsidizes that industry.” The article follows that with this fine sentence: “Larsen said he could not comment on whether Chevron’s oil operations receive any government subsidies.” Court Rich, an Arizona attorney who represents renewable energy interests, criticized the effort on Twitter: He also characterized the move as desperate, telling the Republic: “Ironically, I bet this is the same failed tactic that a desperate horse and buggy lobbyist once used to try and scare the public against gas automobiles.” Chevron announced a partnership with EVgo just last week, as the company is bringing EVgo’s chargers to some of its gas stations. More than a dozen EVgo fast chargers are currently operational or under construction at various Chevron stations in California. Electrek’s Take Chevron’s one hand makes a public display of installing EV chargers while the other hand secretively urges a group of former employees to fight back against electric cars in their own state. As we’ve noted, it’s not that these oil companies want to embrace EV adoption. Old habits die hard — if they ever die at all. (Astroturfing is becoming a favored technique in the energy industry.) These retirees really should be doing something — anything — better with their time. Kudos to Newell for being a voice for progress and exposing this campaign.
