Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Mazda Does Not Believe In Large-kWh EV packs (v)

Well Mazda does make good Wankels and if you run them in their sweet spot
they get quite good mpg. Wankels can be tiny and make lots of high speed
RPMs, no vibration at all. Maybe they are a good option for a hybrid where
it is really running on electrons out the wheels.

It is a hybrid then a small pack makes fine sense.

I have a better idea. Why don't they just include a 6 year old boy with
every TPV? Then you can have him sit in the back seat and make brrr-brrr-
vroom motor noises as you drive down the road in your not-so-quiet EV.

I guess that fake automatic transmission creep wasn't sufficiently annoying.

Who knew CM Kornbluth would turn out to be a prophet?

Interesting. Mazda thinks that drivers want more noise and less range in
their EVs. They also think that it's a great idea to use a Wankel engine in
a hybrid. Great idea: Wankel engines are noted for smooth operation and for
abysmal fuel efficiency.

Is Mazda trying to commit corporate harikari?

favorite parts of their jobs. Tesla

While Tesla is a demanding place to work, there are advantages that come
with the fast pace and long hours, former employees have told Business
Insider.

Their tenures at Tesla collectively span from 2008 to 2019.
Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Tesla, like many companies, is a complex organization and the experiences
that employees have there can vary.

But while the electric-car maker is a demanding place to work, there are
advantages that come with the fast pace and long hours, former employees
have told Business Insider.

Nine former employees who worked at the company between 2008 and 2019
described their favorite parts of their jobs. (Before interviews that
covered a broad range of topics, they asked for anonymity due to a fear of
reprisal from Tesla.)

Here's what they said.

Are you a current or former Tesla employee? Do you have an opinion about
what it's like to work there? Contact this reporter at
mmatou...@businessinsider.com .

Seeing how excited customers were when they received their cars

"The best part was really just working with an amazing team of inspired
people who want to make the world a better place and, of course, delivering
that awesome Tesla experience to customers — getting them into their cars,
seeing that look on their face for the first time when they either use
Autopilot or slam on the accelerator," a former salesperson said.

Tesla's reputation

"Tesla had that cool factor," the former salesperson added. "I'd walk around
town with my work badge all the time just because I wanted to show off that
I worked at Tesla."

A collaborative culture

"The environment that I started with was amazing," a former delivery
employee said. "It felt like everyone wanted to come to work. Everyone
wanted to be there. It felt like a real family-shop vibe. People, if they
saw you were getting stressed, they'd try to help divvy out your workload,
so they'd kind of step in, and everyone would help each other out."

Employee discounts

"You got discounts everywhere," including at movie theaters and Disneyland,
a former production employee said.

Being able to watch the engineers work

"My favorite part of Tesla was being able to sit around people who designed
[the vehicles]," a former production employee said. "These engineers were
just brainiacs," he said, adding that he once watched a Tesla engineer drive
a Roadster from the passenger's seat after plugging his computer into the
car.

The high standards
The high standards Tesla

"The best part working for Tesla is they hired really good people most of
the time, and if you're not really good, you get let go," a former delivery
employee said. "You have to believe in what you're doing in those buildings
or you're not going to have a spot tomorrow. I think that was the best part
because it took me back to the camaraderie I had in the military."

How the company adapts and the fast pace
How the company adapts and the fast pace Tesla

"The best thing about a company like Tesla is that the ability and
willingness to change and adapt in an instant was always there," said a
former employee who worked on customer-service initiatives, citing as an
example Tesla's delivery operation during the third and fourth quarters of
2018. During each, the company set a record for the most vehicles delivered
in one quarter, a record that was broken again this year.

"In any experience I've ever had with any other company, Tesla moved faster
than anyone else," the former employee said.

Being able to build things

"My favorite part, aside from the coworkers, is that I get to build stuff,"
a former production employee,

This will stop only when Tesla launches the truck

The Tesla Pickup truck has been the talk of the town ever since it was
announced. Surprisingly, there are a lot of details out, like the towing
capacity, and even the drivetrain specs to some extent, but no one knows
what it looks like. The so-called ‘official’ images don’t give out much
either. There are a lot of impressive renderings out there; some very
logically thought out designs that might be close to what the actual truck
could look like. However, we decided to search for the truck on Facebook and
found some very ‘creative masterpieces.’

Which One Is Your Favorite Of The Lot?

People are surely having fun with these renderings. In fact, some of them
are pretty old, thus showing you that people have been anticipating this
truck for a long time now. You can find everything from a simple, Model
X-based design, to a monstrous truck with off-road tires, high-stance, and
all of that. Considering how simple and elegant the whole Tesla stable looks
currently, you would expect the truck to follow the same path. However, Musk
announced that it will be "futuristic like [a] cyberpunk, Blade Runner
pickup truck” and unlike anything in the market. So, I guess we’re looking
at a funky design that will be an attention-seeker.

Despite the Pickup being one of the most anticipated vehicles today, Tesla
has managed to keep this close-guarded secret away from carparazzis and
prying eyes successfully. There were instances where people went nuts seeing
an actual Tesla pickup truck, only to realize later that an impatient owner
decided to take the matters into her own hands and build a Tesla truck of
her own. Her ‘Truckla’ is based on the Tesla Model 3 and it actually looks
very practical. But the latest teaser image appears to be a wraparound
taillight on the liftgate of the truck bed. From what we can see in the
teaser, the truck will be boxy and will bear a rather retro, contemporary
look. What is it going to be, Tesla? Just come out with it already.
Tesla Will Be Launching The Truck Soon
https://www.facebook.com/swapalease...

In the far-end of July, a Twitter user asked Musk when the truck would be
launched, and Musk replied saying we could see it in two-three months. The
automaker is not known to attend auto shows, so if we were to speculate
where the launch would be, I would say at a standalone event, like most of
its other launches to date.

However, if by some miracle Tesla decides to launch it at an auto show,
it would most likely be at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show.

This will be held in the last week of November, which is pretty close to the

 Honda-E EV
]

...We finally see the specs for this Europe only car...

Ahead of its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Honda has unveiled
the full specs of their Honda E small electric car. Honda developed the E
with a focus on design simplicity and usability for the needs of modern
urban lifestyles. The clean external lines are helped by the use of
exterior cameras replacing the traditional side mirrors. The mirrorless
design allows for better aerodynamics. The interior has a full width
digital dashboard with dual 12.3 inch LCD touch screens for infotainment and
driver information. Owners are able to access the car via a digital key on a
smartphone app. The app can also report on things like battery charge
control, range monitor, and navigation search results can be sent from the
phone to the vehicle or have control of remote climate control.

The Honda e makes use of contextual speech recognition to use natural
language to provide access to a range of online services. Occupants can
activate the system by saying "Okay Honda"

The power for the Honda E comes from a choice of two motors driving the rear
wheels with either 134 horsepower or 151 horsepower. Torque comes in at 232
lb-ft. The 35.5 kWh battery is among the smallest in its class but still
offers a range of about 137 miles. The e can recharge up to 80-percent of
its battery in 30 minutes. The 0-62 mph run takes about 8 seconds.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but interested buyers in UK, Germany,
France, and Norway and reserve their car online. The car remains Forbidden
Fruit for the US.

To combat climate change—which no surprise is taken quite seriously by a
country with a near 100% literacy rate—the Swedes have ambitiously set a
goal to be a completely carbon neutral country by 2045. Electric car sales
are rising, but according to a survey conducted by McDønald’s, 48% of
drivers say it’s hard for them to find charging stations on the road.
McDønald’s currently has 55 charging stations installed at their roadside
locations, and intends to install another 167 over the course of the next
three years. This is a great thing for the environment, and a pretty great
business strategy. Swedes might not always need McNuggets, but they most
certainly will always need McElectricity.

Porsche on Wednesday unveiled the production versions of its first fully
electric sports car, the Taycan Turbo and the Taycan Turbo S.

The vehicles will compete against Tesla's Model S sedan.

The Model S has better acceleration, a higher top speed, and will very
likely have a longer range.

However, Porsche has said the Taycan Turbo will be able to sustain its
performance better than the Model S.

Porsche on Wednesday unveiled the production versions of its first fully
electric sports car, the Taycan Turbo and the Taycan Turbo S.

The vehicles will compete against Tesla's Model S sedan when deliveries
began later this year.

Here's how the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S compare to the Model S.
They all have two motors and standard all-wheel-drive configurations.

The Model S has faster acceleration.

The performance trim for the Model S can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.4
seconds, while Porsche says the Taycan Turbo S can do the same in 2.6
seconds.

The long-range trim for the Model S can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.7
seconds, while the Taycan Turbo takes three seconds.

But Porsche has said the Taycan Turbo will be able to sustain its
performance better.

In 2018, Porsche's head of electric vehicles Stefan Weckbach said the Taycan
will be able to sustain its performance better than the Model S. The Taycan
"will offer reproducible performance and a top speed which can be maintained
for long periods," he said.
The Model S can have a faster top speed.

The Taycan Turbo and Turbo S both have top speeds of 161 mph. The
performance trim for the Model S has a top speed of 163 mph, though its
long-range trim has a top speed of 155 mph.

Neither vehicle has a clear advantage in charging speed.

It can be difficult to compare charging times between electric vehicles
because there isn't a single metric all automakers use to measure it.

Porsche says the Taycan Turbo and the Taycan Turbo S can charge from 5% to
80% in 22.5 minutes "under ideal conditions." And during a five-minute
charge, they can receive around 62 miles of range, according to Porsche.

Tesla says the latest version of its Supercharger charging stalls can
provide up to 75 miles of charge in five minutes, and a graphic on its
website suggests its vehicles can charge from around 10-15% to 80% in around
30 minutes. In July, MotorTrend published a review of Tesla's new
Supercharger stalls and found that the performance version of Tesla's Model
3 sedan could charge from 10%-80% in 29-37 minutes, depending on the type of
charger used ...

The Model S is very likely to have more range.

The Model S has a maximum range of 345-370 miles, according to the US
Environmental Protection Agency. While the EPA has not yet released the
results of its testing for the Taycan, according to the European testing
cycle, the Taycan Turbo S will have a range of up to 256 miles, while the
Taycan Turbo will have a range of up to 280 miles. Europe's estimates tend
to be more generous than the EPA's, however.

The Model S can seat five in its standard configuration, while five-person
seating is an option for the Porsche.

The Model S seats five adults, while the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S can seat
five in an optional seating configuration. In Porsche's standard
configuration, the cars only seat four.

The Model S has more storage space.

The Model S has 30 cubic feet of storage space, while the Taycan and Taycan
Turbo S have around 16 cubic feet of storage space.

The Model S is far less expensive.

The long-range trim for the Model S starts at $79,990, while the performance
trim starts at $99,990. The Taycan Turbo starts at $153,510, while the
Taycan Turbo S starts at $187,610. The starting prices will eventually be
lowered to $150,900 and $185,000, Porsche says, and cheaper trims will be
announced soon.

Both vehicles de-emphasize buttons and knobs in favor of screens.

The Taycan Turbo and Turbo S have a 16.8-inch digital instrument panel,
10.9-inch infotainment screen, and an 8.4-inch touchpad below the
infotainment screen that can be used for climate settings.

For the Model S, many interior settings are controlled through a 17-inch
touchscreen.

Porsche doesn't have a semi-autonomous driver-assistance system like Tesla's
Autopilot.

Tesla's Autopilot can control steering, braking, and acceleration with
driver supervision in some circumstances. Porsche does not have an
equivalent driver-assistance system, though high-profile crashes involving
Autopilot have

We are encouraging questions from readers about electric vehicles, and
charging, and whatever else you want to learn. So please send them through
and we will get our experts to respond, and invite other people to
contribute through the comments section.

At the EV Transition conference, one of the speakers (possibly James Kennedy
from Tritium) mentioned that you should never plug an EV into a normal power
point (via the ‘mobile charging’ or ‘contingency’ cable supplied with a
vehicle), due to the possibility that the wiring on that power point’s
circuit is old / damaged, or that other devices on the same circuit would
result in too much load.

Can you elaborate on the risk involved in doing this, such as the likelihood
of the vehicle and/or electrical circuit being damaged, and if there are any
precautions / testing that can be done to reduce this risk?

Also, does this risk vary between different EV models? Obviously EV owners
should use a wall-charger on a separate circuit at home, but I’m thinking
about the consumer who travels (for work or holiday) and would ideally like
to charge overnight where they are staying.

Peter

Hi Peter – that is an excellent question, and one as an electrician and EVSE
(electric vehicle supply equipment) installer I regularly address. The short
answer is … ‘it depends’. The long answer is given below:

If the socket outlet is newly installed with minimum 20A (4.8kW) rated wire,
and that wire runs to that outlet only (as per the new Appendix P for EVSEs
in AS/NZS3000:2017 – otherwise known as ‘The Wiring Rules’), then it is
fine to plug in the contingency EVSE to recharge.

Same applies to outlets rated at 25 or even 32A – if the outlet is installed
with a potential high and continuous load in mind – i.e. to Appendix P – you
can use any EVSE rated at or below the current rating of the outlet. All is
therefore fine for an overnight charge at a friend’s.

(As an example, I carry a selection of portable EVSEs rated to 2.4, 3.6 and
7kW for my Kona. BUT I only plug them when I can determine the quality of
the wiring – otherwise I stick to the 8A EVSE ‘emergency’ EVSE that came
with the car, and not even that if I am suspicious of the wiring).

On the flip side: if you are plugging into an unknown power point at a
friend’s for an overnight charge – you could have/cause problems. The power
point will be on a circuit shared by several others … including the kettle.

Normally a fuse or circuit breaker solves that problem. (But leaves you
without a charged EV if you don’t find out in time). A worse complication is
if the wiring is old or has a dodgy connection somewhere. That sort of
problem can easily result in a fire. (See figure 1).

A further complication is that extension leadsa have the same issue: many
15A rated leads are not good for the continuous supply of high currents.
Newer 15A leads in fact have only 1.5mm2 conductors. (As comparison, the
wire to an EVSE socket outlet must be a minimum of 2.5mm2. By the way: cheap
10A leads often only have 0.75mm2 conductors!)

That 15A lead rating relies on a ‘diversity factor’, this being that a
normal electrical load fluctuates between maximum and lower amounts as the
items plugged into it are used intermittently (e.g. hair drier) or have a
duty cycle (e.g. refrigerator or fan-heater).

This means the lead heats up and cools down as the load increases and
decreases: but it never reaches its maximum temperature rating for any
period of time.

Running a continuous high current through a lead (which is often left lying
in the hot Australian sun making good heat dissipation difficult) will
result in the lead eventually exceeding its design temperature as it simply
can’t lose heat fast enough.

At that point it will start to soften, the conductors and particularly the
pins/sockets begin oxidising, as well as the excess heat hastening the
aging/degradation of the insulation.

Yet another complication is that the flat pins in a household plug are just
not up to week-in, week-out high current use. They were never designed for
it, and I have plenty of examples of what happens to them if you keep up
that sort of punishment. Industrial rated 3 pin plugs are an improvement as
they screw together to minimise moisture entry

We are excited to see the truck in the real world, but a number of minor
changes have dampened our spirits somehow

We’ve seen the Rivian R1T during various events and we are mighty impressed
with what RJ Scaringe, the CEO, has managed to come up for it. Rivian has
released trailers and pictures of the pickup truck and it sure looks great.
However, it was never really spied or seen on the roads to get an idea of
what it looks like in real-world conditions; after all, things can be
deceiving when viewed under shiny lights. But the truck was recently spotted
testing in Argentina and we have to say, it does not disappoint.

Capacity

Is This The Same Rivian Truck We Saw Before?

A pair of Rivian R1T pickup trucks were spotted in Tierra del Fuego, an
island chain shared by Chile and Argentina. It is known for its glaciers,
snowy mountains, and wind-sculpted trees. The fact that the trucks were seen
here shows how extensively and vigorously Rivian is testing the pickup
truck. The photos were uploaded on Rivianforums.com and enthusiasts were
quick to note down the differences this potential pre-production version has
in comparison to the concept version we’ve seen previously. First, let’s
talk about the exterior. This is the first time the R1T wears the badges and
logos on the body. It’s also the first time the truck is seen in white
shade. Tow hooks can be seen on the front bumper, where the concept version
had glossy black panels, whilst the rear bumper is seen with changes made to
the shape and diffusers.

The quarter windows on the rear doors did not make its way here from the
concept version, and neither did the silver metal hooks on the rear bumper.

Another big change is the location of the charger port that has been moved
from the passenger side to the driver’s side at the front. The door handles
look slightly different whereas the wing mirrors are a tad bit larger than
what we have seen previously. This R1T, just like the concept version, rides
on Pirelli Scorpion all-terrain tires, and the front fenders come with
orange reflectors on them. The back of the truck is seen with a thicker
spoiler at the edge along with two high-mounted brake lights and two slots
to channel air down the backlight. The R1T concept showcased an exciting
feature - two fold-down steps under the rear bumper that would enable easy
access to the bed with the tailgate up. But, as it turns out, even those are
missing here. Looks like the R1T has lost out on a lot of cool features.

I Hope It’s Not Some Cost-Cutting Exercise

On the inside, the steering wheel has lost all its charm. The concept’s
steering wheel came with two scroll wheels and a square center design, and
it represented a very minimalist design. However, Rivian seems to have
replaced it with a full black unit that comes with a round center and
numerous spoke controls, so it looks like it’s borrowed from a regular
sedan.

To make things worse, carbon fiber inserts between the concept wheels'
spokes have also been eliminated.

If it’s of any consolation, the interior shows off the Black Mountain color
scheme in black and gray. This theme will be offered along with the other
two interior themes - Forrest Edge and Lunar Rock.

What We Know About The Truck Until Now

Speaking of the truck, Rivian is marketing it as an off-road, lifestyle
adventure pickup, and is targeting it as a family camper. The performance
specs are very impressive, as Rivian claims it can sprint to 60 mph from a
standstill in three seconds. While Tesla and Ford are on a towing war,
Rivian prefers to remain out of it. When Tesla announced that its pickup
truck will be able to tow up to 300,000 pounds, Ford decided to counter it.
The Blue Oval released a video wherein the

cutting-edge EV tech, a single T3 MPV or T3 minivan can save the fuel
consumption and emissions equivalent to 5 passenger car

BYD (Build Your Dreams) India, a subsidiary of BYD Group, China, the world’s
largest electric vehicle (EV) maker, has entered India’s pure electric van
segment with the introduction of two new pure EVs – T3 pure electric
passenger MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) and T3 pure electric commercial
logistics minivan.

“In the past few years, with the support of the Indian government and our
local partners, BYD has realised the local design, R, manufacturing of
electric buses in India, and established battery manufacturing facilities
here. We are also the first OEM in the country to export e-buses to overseas
markets from India. Our pure electric buses have cemented their position as
a market leader in the Indian e-bus segment,” said Liu Xueliang, Managing
Director of BYD India.

“Seeing the huge potential of India’s EV market, BYD is responding to the
Indian government’s call to promote the local market and make India a global
hub for EVs, and so today we are proud to announce that BYD is moving toward
its next step in India. We are delighted to launch the all-new pure electric
T3 MPV and T3 minivan for the Indian market and are confident that our
products will set a benchmark in India’s electric van segment. We always
strive to bring the most advanced and cleanest technology into the Indian
market and better serve our local customers,” he added.

“At this early stage, we are going to focus on creating a more efficient,
more reliable B2B and electric public transportation sector,” said Ketsu
Zhang, Executive Director of BYD India. “We will also gradually look at
increasing investment and manufacturing electric vans locally, according to
Indian market demand and government policies.”

Proprietory battery technology for both vehicles
The T3 MPV and T3 minivan models adopt BYD’s proprietary battery technology,
whose safety, reliability and lifecycle are proven by the company’s 11-year
track record of EV operation as well as its global EV footprint.

According to BYD, the vehicles offer the best configuration and features
available in the market, including keyless entry, push-button start, a music
system with Bluetooth connectivity, reverse parking camera and sensors, and
well-designed space for cargo storage or passengers. The vehicles are
equipped with automatic transmission, which makes them among the most easily
operable vehicles.

Both models also come with advanced safety features like Anti-lock Braking
System (ABS), Electric Parking System (EPB), Brake Override System (BOS),
Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and more. The regenerative braking
system helps to improve range and save energy, while the Controller Area
Network (CAN) bus communication system provides smart management and
maintenance.

BYD claims that compared to a traditional fuel minivan, the T3 MPV and T3
minivan can effectively reduce the cost of urban logistics distribution.
Adopting BYD’s cutting-edge technology, one single T3 MPV or T3 minivan can
save the fuel consumption and emissions equivalent to 5 passenger cars. Both
models require only an hour-and-a-half hours to fully charge using DC
charging equipment, and both also support standard AC chargers. Once fully
charged, both models can travel up to 300km.

In addition, BYD is now actively seeking local Indian partners for the the
electric van product series.

BYD India was set up in March 2007 in Chennai and New Delhi. The Indian
subsidiary has two factories, covering more than 140,000 square metres, with
a cumulative investment of over US$150 million (Rs 1,080 crore). The
business covers mobile components, solar panels, battery energy storage,
electric buses, electric trucks, electric forklifts, chargers, rail transit,
and more, also providing customers with product solutions and related
after-sales services.

BYD’s India branch has gradually developed into the group's South Asia
regional headquarters, realising the group's

]

Ford Motor Company recently announced that it would release its fully
electric F-150 before 2022 – beating General Motors to market and likely
arriving just in time to take on newcomers to the pickup space like Tesla
and Rivian.

GM was actually the first major automotive manufacturer to put an fully
electric pickup truck into production, however. The Chevrolet S10 EV was
launched in 1997, mainly for fleets, with GM producing about 1,100 examples
of the truck before pulling the plug on the project in 1998.

The S10 EV was based on a two-door, short bed Chevrolet S10 work truck and
was powered by a version of the GM EV1’s powertrain, which consisted of a
114 horsepower (or 85 kW) AC induction motor and a 16.2 kWh lead-acid
battery pack. The battery, mounted in between the frame rails under the
S10’s bed, weighed an astonishing 1,400 lbs and brought the total weight of
the little truck to 4,199 lbs.

According to PickupTrucks.com, the Idaho National Laboratory’s Advanced
Vehicle Testing Activity (AVTA) put a Chevrolet S10 EV to the test in 1997
and came up with a total range of 38.8 miles at a constant 60 mph and 60.4
miles at a constant 45 mph, figures that were calculated using the EPA test
cycle. A company in California also tested the trucks and recorded 35 to 43
miles of real-world range on an urban loop with some stop-and-go traffic.

For the 1998 model year, GM introduced a larger 39 kWh nickel-metal-hydride
battery pack, which doubled the vehicle’s range. This was a costly option,
however, and with the S10 EV’s already steep starting price of $33,305, it
wasn’t enough to make the emissions-free pickup any more attractive to
potential fleet buyers and the truck was discontinued.

Tom Convey, a former GM engineer, used to own one of the trucks (along with
a handful of other GM engineering employees) and spoke glowingly of it for
PickupTrucks.com’s 2012 article on it. Convey bought his truck from a
utility company that put it up for sale after they were done with it and
later sold the vehicle to a buyer in Minneapolis.

“The smooth, quick acceleration was like taking off in a light aircraft,”
Convey said. “The sound of the gear whine reminded me of a turbine engine.
If GM made a vehicle like that again, I’d buy it in a minute! I miss that
truck!”

So while Ford, Rivian and perhaps Tesla may beat GM to market with a
modern-day electric pickup, the Chevrolet S10 EV was first to the party.
Ford also followed GM’s lead in the late 1990s, introducing a Ford Ranger EV
on a lease-only basis between 1998 and 2002, before recalling all of them
EV1-style.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN CHENNAI

Picture this: No jet black smoke from vehicles. No constant noise from
engines. No toxic carbon-laden air to choke your lungs as you walk along a
city thoroughfare. It might sound Utopian now, but if there is a boom in
electric mobility, this ideal could well become reality on Chennai roads.
One of the first steps towards that has been by a private auto service
provider, Makkal Auto, which rolled out the city’s first electric auto last
week (August 25), .

The initiative has garnered appreciation from Chennaites for two reasons:
one, electric autos would reduce emissions and pave the way for cleaner air.
Secondly, a lot of old autos which would have been rejected now have the
option of being converted to electric ones, ensuring livelihood options for
the traditional auto drivers.

There are three electric autos plying across Chennai currently, but the
Makkal Auto team is certain of taking the count to 100 by the end of the
year. As the city takes baby steps towards going electric, Yasmeen Jawahar,
CEO of Makkal Auto talks about the operation of their three wheeler service,
the end goals and the policies for electric vehicles in Tamil Nadu.

At a time of escalating diesel and LPG prices, does the electric auto prove
to be more cost-effective?

A diesel or LPG auto requires fuel worth Rs 350 to Rs 400 to ply a distance
of 100 km in Chennai. However, you can cover the same distance at a cost of
Rs 35 in an electric vehicle. Even when battery performance is low, the cost
doesn’t exceed Rs 55 for 100 km.

What would the differential be between a diesel and an electric auto, in
terms of overall capital and operational cost?

As most of the autos in Chennai run on LPG, let’s compare LPG and electric
vehicles. Anyway, diesel, petrol and LPG come under internal combustion and
the cost difference is only negligible. The capital cost of an LPG vehicle
and an electric auto is the same — Rs 2.5 lakh. However, a major difference
is observed in the operational cost (as mentioned above).

We can also cut down on maintenance cost in electric vehicles. The battery
life of these vehicles is 15 years and even after that, these batteries
could be used as UPS at home. However, parts of the LPG or diesel auto get
damaged easily and drivers usually have to change it within three years of
purchasing the vehicle.

What is the cost of conversion of a diesel/ LPG auto to electric?

Cost of conversion takes around Rs 2 lakhincluding the insurance and
registration cost. If they buy an electric auto from us, it takes Rs 2.5
lakh + GST.

Chennai is ranked second in overall emissions among all the metros according
to a report in Centre for Science and Environment. How would the electric
auto help?

According to our statistics, Chennai air is better than Pune, Delhi and
Bengaluru’s. Pollution here is only 20 to 30 percent of what you find in
Delhi. By going electric, we can reduce 30 per cent of the carbon footprint
in Chennai within 3 to 4 months. Autos — 1.2 lakh autos with 80,000
unregistered ones (sic) — and buses add to the city’s vehicular pollution.

Even though the government has banned two-stroke engine vehicles (as they
cause high levels of air and noise pollution), a lot of drivers are still
using them. But these two-stroke engine vehicles can be retrofitted into
electric vehicles, which will change the city’s vehicular pollution scene
and also work out economically for auto-drivers. Electric vehicles may not
be completely eco-friendly as electricity is generated through thermal
power. But we also have solar-powered vehicles that are completely
eco-friendly.

Tell us more about the solar-powered vehicles. How do they work?

It is yet to be launched in the market. It takes an additional cost of Rs
50,000 to fit the solar panels. As the charge can be stored in the battery,
drivers don’t have to worry about cloudy days.

Are there enough charging stations in the city?

There is a problem with the charging stations. Just like it took time to
develop a universal charger for mobiles, it will take a few years to develop
a universal charging type for the battery vehicles. However, Makkal Auto
hopes to ensure 100 charging points in 10 zones of Chennai by October. In
each zone, three charging points will have swapping technology where drivers
can swap their battery with an already-charged one. This way, the drivers
can save charging time of four hours.

]

As electric cars become more common in showrooms, they’re also finding their
way onto racetracks. Single-seat Formula E cars race in cities around the
world, and now Opel plans to take electric cars rallying. The German
automaker is launching a rally series — the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup — around
its Corsa-e electric car. The race-prepped car will debut at the 2019
Frankfurt Motor Show in September, while the rally series is expected to
start up in the summer of 2020.

The series will feature 15 identical Corsa-e rally cars. This type of
one-make race series is fairly common; Jaguar already has one for its I-Pace
electric SUV. They generally aren’t as glamorous or prestigious as top-tier
race series like Formula One, but making all the cars identical lowers
costs, making it easier for small teams and up-and-coming drivers to enter.
Opel claims the e-Rally Cup will be a great way for young drivers to get
noticed and move up the racing ladder.

The rally car is expected to be pretty similar to its road-going
counterpart, which Opel is currently taking reservations for (the Corsa-e
will also be sold in the United Kingdom as a Vauxhall). Opel didn’t touch
the powertrain, retaining the same electric motor and 50-kilowatt-hour
battery pack. The Corsa-e rally car makes the same 134 horsepower and 192
pound-feet of torque as the stock version. But Opel did upgrade the
suspension and brakes, and added a roll cage and hydraulic handbrake, which
makes it easier for the driver to slide the car.

Opel didn’t come up with the idea for electric rallying. The FIA World
Rallycross Championship plans to launch a companion electric-only series
called Projekt E. Rallycross is basically rallying for a YouTube audience.
Instead of being held on multiple sections of roads or trails over several
days, rallycross events are held on compact tracks that feature lots of
jumps, as well as a mix of pavement and gravel, to create more of a
spectacle. Formula E is also planning a series called Extreme E that will
feature electric SUVs in exotic locations, and a team in New Zealand is
working to turn a Hyundai Kona Electric into a rally car.

Outside the world of rallying, electric power is gaining a foothold. Formula
E has evolved from a curiosity to an established part of the motor-sports
scene, attracting interest from major automakers like Jaguar, Nissan, and
BMW (Mercedes-Benz and Porsche will join next season). Volkswagen broke the
record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with its all-electric I.D.
R. Automakers have long used racing to help sell internal-combustion cars,
so it’s not surprising that they are trying the same thing with electric
cars.

Mazda e-TPV rides on small EV platform. But bigger versions will follow,
with AWD and possibly even RWD

Watch: we drive Mazda's prototype electric vehicle on the roads of Norway
]

If it looks like a Mazda CX-30 and feels like a Mazda CX-30... it's not
necessarily a Mazda CX-30.

The car you see here is a Technology Prove-out Vehicle (TPV). On top it's a
CX-30, but underneath it's Mazda's first-ever production pure-electric car,
set for launch next year. So it's actually an e-TPV.

Mazda is famously ambivalent about EVs, arguing that on a "well to wheel"
(from materials/production to end of life) basis it's more environmentally
effective to improve combustion engine technology.

But needs must. In this case the need is looming emissions targets across
the world.

Europe is phasing in a 95g/km limit (that's about 4.1 litres per 100km for a
petrol vehicle) from next year towards 2021, with heavy penalties for those
companies that can't comply. Japan has a long-term vision to cut greenhouse
gas by 90 per cent by 2050. There are New Energy Vehicle policies coming for
China.

Plug-in vehicles have to be in the mix for companies to meet mandated green
goals. In Europe for example, EVs gain "Super Credits" from 2020 - a single
model counting as two vehicles towards average fleet emissions.

Mazda has a "multi-solution approach" that will include rotary-engine
range-extender hybrid models.

But the first plug-in product is a pure-EV, or Battery Electric Vehicle
(BEV) if you like.

[image] Battery is small-capacity by modern standards - but Mazda argues
that's more environmentally responsible.

There's a lot we don't know about this new model yet: like what type of
vehicle it will be, performance statistics and projected range.

But we've driven it anyway, in e-TPV form. It's based on a Mazda-specific
BEV platform and will be front-drive, with larger variations on the
architecture (and AWD, possibly even RWD) to come later.

Will it surprise you to learn Mazda is doing things a little bit differently
to other companies?

In a world where everybody is obsessed with increasing EV range, Mazda has
commissioned a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) from science journal Sustainability
that argues smaller batteries result in significantly lower CO2 emissions
than larger ones, once you factor in materials extraction and production.
More of that well-to-wheel logic.

So the new Mazda EV has a rather modest 35.5kWh battery - smaller than the
recently upgraded Hyundai Ioniq (38.3kWh) or Nissan Leaf (40kWh) and a whole
lot less than New Zealand's best-selling BEV, the Hyundai Kona (64kWh).

Outputs are 105kW/265Nm and DC fast-charging is via a CHAdeMo connection, as
favoured by Japanese EV makers.

The Sustainability report suggests that with a 160,000km battery swapover, a
35.5kWh EV has the same LCA environmental impact as a diesel-engined Mazda3.
A 95kWh EV is substantially higher.

Mazda isn't talking range or even battery supplier detail at the moment, but
if it's a compact vehicle then 250-300km on a full charge would be a
ballpark figure.

We drove the Mazda e-TPV in Norway, home of delicious salmon and a new-car
market that's now 50 per cent EV thanks to generous subsidies - and even
heavier taxes on petrol and diesel cars.

[image] New EV won't simply be a plug-in CX-30 SUV. But it'll probably be
something quite similar.

It was a quick spin to be sure: less than an hour around a lakeside road,
with a loop of highway and motorway running thrown in. But still a good mix
of roads, including some hillwork and hairpin corners.

Mazda engineers tend to get a bit ethereal when talking about vehicle
dynamics: lots of talk about "human-centred development" and "inertia
tensor". But the upshot is that the emphasis is on a

Online sales site opens vehicle-delivery tower

Vending machines typically dispense coffee, soft drinks, chips, candy — and
some at airports can drop a smart phone or a pair of earbuds.

Now, an e-commerce car company based in Phoenix has super-sized the concept,
taking it to a whole new level.

On Friday, Sept. 6, Carvana unveiled a car vending machine in Ontario, the
first one in the Inland Empire and the second in California. That’s right, a
machine that spits out automobiles.

glass outlet is the companys second car vending machine in California, the

This gleaming glass tower that stands eight stories tall opened for business
Friday, a week after the grand opening of the one in Westminster off the 405
Freeway. The Ontario edifice looms over the busy eastbound 10 Freeway just
west of the 15 Freeway. As drivers gazed up at the magic machine loaded with
27 cars, they wouldn’t be able to exit and buy one. The cars are reserved
for those who’ve already pressed “buy” on their computer or mobile device.

“Well, those cars driving by can see the cars in the tower but all of the
vehicles will already be spoken for,” said Amy O’Hara, associate director of
communications for Carvana, during a vending machine demonstration on
Friday, Sept. 6.

Car buyers don’t show up with rolls of quarters. Carvana requires shoppers
to pore through the approximately 15,000 used cars for sale pictured on its
website (carvana.com), where the customer buys a car sight unseen. The
customer meets a Carvana employee at the nearest vending machine at an
appointed time. The rest is like a delivery side show that puts an
exclamation point on this non-traditional way of buying a car.

“The customer advocate will hand you a commemorative coin that is about the
size of a hockey puck. You drop the coin in the slot. A lift will go up in
the tower and grab your vehicle and bring it down into a delivery bay,”
O’Hara explained.

The customer can drive the car for up to seven days. If he doesn’t like it,
he can return it, she said, although mileage restrictions apply. Buyers get
a 100-day warranty.

When O’Hara dropped a coin into the machine’s lighted pedestal, the
hydraulic lift found a blue Subaru WRX, put the hooks into the elevated
cargo bay and pulled it into the center, then lowered it down to the ground
floor. The demo was repeated for the red, 2017 Nissan Leaf, an electric
vehicle.

“It is fun, memorable, unique,” O’Hara said. “The other option is to have
your car delivered to your home. You can have the bragging rights to say you
bought your car from a vending machine.”

Online car-buying is a growing business. Carvana, which started in 2012 and
went public in 2017, is one of more than a dozen similar companies. Using
the symbol CVNA, stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Carvana
joins a host of other online companies such as cars.com, cargurus.com,
ebaymotors.com, vroom.com, carsoup.com and others, including CarMax, which
has both online and physical sites.

Carvana claims its prices are set $1,000 below Kelley Blue Book values. “We
don’t have sales reps or a large overhead,” O’Hara said. A car can be
purchased in as little as 30 minutes, that includes time online buying the
car and picking it up at the vending machine, she said. Prices are fixed.
Haggling and negotiating are a thing of the past.

But there is some fine print.

First, Carvana sells used cars only. The company is picky about what cars
get listed on its site. Usually, the cars are no more than 3 or 4 years old.
Often, they are cars given back to banks when the lease runs out.

Second, the buyer doesn’t get to drive the car until the deal is
consummated. When asked if that’s a problem, O’Hara said that’s what the
seven-day return policy is for. “You have the time to take it

End-of-Life Diesel Waste Collection Vehicles Refurbished & Converted as EVs

In partnership with Westminster City Council, Veolia is trialling two
‘upcycled’ electric Refuse Collection Vehicles (eRCV) on the streets of
London.

The company explained that the two 26 tonne collection vehicles previously
ran on diesel and were reaching the end of their life. However, instead of
scrapping them, Veolia and Westminster City Council have upcycled them to
as-new condition with new electric engines that will improve air quality and
exceed the requirements of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone in central London.

According to Veolia, the vehicles have been engineered to solve the
industry-wide challenge of eRCV battery life. The electric engine will only
release power when the vehicle is active, rather than running continuously,
as is required by diesel models.

This means that despite power-draining factors that include fluctuating
vehicle weight, frequent stops and starts, and multiple operations of the
bin lift, they are expected to efficiently run for a full shift with no
emissions produced.

The two year trial is part of Westminster City Council and Veolia’s long
term plan to improve air quality and increase the number of electric
vehicles on the city’s streets. If successful, the vehicles will make daily
recycling and refuse collections cleaner and greener, and accelerate the
transition to zero-emission heavy goods vehicles in central London.

Gavin Graveson, Executive Vice President for Veolia UK and Ireland, said:
“This project highlights Veolia’s on-going investment in clean air solutions
in London and across the UK. By converting existing vehicles and trialling
alternative fleet solutions with forward thinking local authority partners
like Westminster City Council, we are not only preserving resources but are
lowering emissions and creating greener cities.”

Cllr Tim Mitchell, Westminster City Council’s Deputy Leader, said: “Tackling
pollution in London is an ongoing battle, and this pilot is just one of the
many ways we’re making our daily operations cleaner and greener. I am proud
to see electric vehicle innovation like this out on the streets of
Westminster, keeping our borough clean without sacrificing air quality.”

The project is backed by a grant from the Innovation Funding Service
(Innovate UK) which has allowed for the 18 month renovation process as well
the upcoming two year trial. The project has also converted an additional
two RCVs that will be used in trials in Sheffield.
