Re: [EVDL] How far can you go?

2020-09-07 Thread Mike Nickerson via EV
They were talking about the 1973 Thunderbird getting 6-8 miles per gallon
and a 25 gallon tank. So, a 150-200 mile range. Most current production
electric vehicles beat that easily.

They also commented that the cars were "unwanted, unloved, and unsold"
because they were too expensive to fill up, and the stations didn't have
enough fuel for them. That 25 gallon tank will "be enough to get you to the
next gas station."

There are ways around not having a strong internet connecion
to view youtube videos.

You could use
https://x2convert.com
to convert the streaming video's audio to a .mp3 file you could
download and listen to.

But Most of the value of the video is in there in 1973's oil crisis ...
seeing the gas pump show $0.39.9/gallon (and they were still
complaining) ... those 70's hairdo's (guy's hair not too long as
to be beat up for being a hippie or gay, but longer than the
50's generation crewcuts) on someone trying to talk serious ...
that people were totally dismayed that having no-fuel could
happen in the .us (like they way covid has been
mismanaged/bungled) ... to seeing 1970's city streets with huge
detroit beasts/boats getting 6to8mpg ... and japanese cars still
to physically small to fit huge .us bodies/butts and carry all their
stuff/junk with them (small .jp ice for small .jp humans, not for
large 1970 appetite .us buyers).

If I remember correctly, years ago, Lee held bragging-rights to
having his internet access via an old 486 pc on outdated operating
system and outdated browsers. I would have hoped by now that
situation had changed when more up-to-date PCs with much more
ram can be had for less than $100
https://www.google.com/search?q=ebay+pentium+pc

https://www.google.com/search?q=rca+cambio=shop

These are so cheap because the latest verson of MSwindows (10)
can't run on them (or thy are slow when they try), but they work
just fine on free versions of linux.
Like Peppermnt
https://www.google.com/search?q=peppermint+linux
 or linux mint (or others)
https://www.google.com/search?q=linux+mint

But Lee stated it is his conection that is the limiting factor.
When was learning about tablets years ago, I bought a $50
android 4 limited to 4Gb and it only had wifi (no wireless 2,3,4g).
I learned wth a wifi connection could browse and keep my apps
up to date. I retired that tablet and went with an android 5
smartphone with a 4g network. It served my internet needs for
several years.

Since then, the ever increasing bandwith demands of today's web
pages, placed on wireless data plans started having me bump up
aganst my data limit at the end of the month.

I had to upgrade to a new android 9 smartphone to use the 5g
capable wireless network (but my affordable unlimited plan keeps
me on a 4g connection= plenty fast for my simple needs). Now,
I'm not running out of data, and though the old phone was fast
enough for me, the new phone has more than 2x the
speed/performance.

I found my old unused motorola moto x1527 phone had no
resale value at the cash4phone vending machine at stores,
yet you can still get one cheap
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorola-Moto-E2-8GB-Cricket-Black-Turquoise-Good-Condition/184396341675?epid=1842066806
(I now use that old phone as a clock and paperweight)

Though the 4g connection is turned off, it still functions
well as a handheld internet device when wifi is turned on
and connected to a free-host. There are plenty of these
around: coffee-houses, stores, libraries, etc.

Perhaps if Lee had one of these with a weeks worth of
video url links stored on it, when he goes out to do his
weekly shopping, he could stop off at a wifi site parking
lot and (legally) mooch some free internet to stream &
watch videos like everyone else?

If that would work for Lee, to ensure Lee stays internet
connected and hip/savy, maybe I should postal mail him
this still usable paperweight?

[EVDL] Small Electric Pickups, PHEVs Practicality

2020-09-07 Thread Mark Hanson via EV
Hi Folks
I’d love a small EV truck but currently made of Unobtanium and realistically go
1/2 range when hauling or boat towing, a problematic variable. The $33k ($6.8k
back from Fed) Ford Escape Plug In 37 mile EV range before gas kicks (1.5k lbs
tow rating) in seems like a good choice to pull my 1480lb ski boat or a 5x8
trailer for Home Improvement building materials. The $38k ($7.5k back from
Fed) RAV4 39 mile PHEV (2.5k lbs tow rating) looks good too. Looking at several
Forums on options, this seems like a good green pickup replacement. Even
pulling a 5x8 trailer (Max loaded 500lb) behind a Prius Prime or my Chevy Bolt
Would work but not for the Heavier boat since towing is not recommended for
most cars. Not sure why the Prius Prime in Europe is rated for 1600 lbs but 0
lbs in US, maybe pounds are heavier here) When I lived in CO, I hitched up my
5x8 trailer behind my VW beetle and then a Jeep. Not as convienient as a truck
but worked well.
Have a renewable energy day

Re: [EVDL] Zilla 1141 error - 15mV drop across contactor at 100A

2020-09-07 Thread Rod Hower via EV
I would recommend a twisted wire pair from the Battery+ and Controller+
connections back to the input of the hairball to reduce the possibility of
noise induced on the wires.  Also follow the guidelines in the Zilla
manual,"The Zilla controller requires special attention to electrical noise
issues. This is because the unusuallyhigh currents of which they are capable
switching at very fast rates cause electrical noise.Signal wires should not be
run near the high power cables due to the likelihood of interference.
Aseparation of at least one foot between power and signal wires is customary.
Alternatively, the powerwires can be run in shielded enclosures or wraps.Power
wires are those which run between batteries, from the battery to the
controller, and from thecontroller to the motor.Signal wires include all other
wiring, but especially sensitive are the pot wiring, motor speed sensorwiring
and serial communication wires. In order to further reduce noise emissions,
power wires of a given circuit should be run together in closeproximity. For
example: The wires to the motor from the controller should all be close to each
other andsecured together with wire ties. The same goes for the battery
connections. Anytime power wirescarrying the same current in opposite
directions are not in close proximity, they form a loop. A loop isvery much
like an antenna and it transmits unwanted electrical noise.Signal wires should
also be run in sets. It is best to keep all the wires for a given circuit in a
tight bundle. The wiring to and from a device, such as a contactor or sensor,
should always be tight. "Also,"The Hairball has internal contactor drivers
which require snubber diodes on the contactor coils in order toabsorb the
inductive kick produced by the contactor coil when it turns off. Please note
these may not beshown in the wiring diagrams. The diodes which come with the
Hairball package have no polarity, they can be connected in eitherdirection
across the coil connection on the contactors. These diodes have a 24V threshold
so they arecompatible with the fast turn off required for Kilovac contactors as
well. "

 Hi All,

I thought I would post a bit of an update

I tried a brand new hairball that I borrowed from a friend – the new hairball
also reported errors 1141 and 1124 when I tried to accelerate in any gear.

I had fused both contactor sense connections to the hairball, resulting in
longer wires running between the contactor terminals and the hairball
Connecting the hairball directly to the contactor with as short a wire as
possible resolved the issue, which suggests it may have been a matter of
induced noise in the measurement, of too short a duration for my DMM to have
picked up.
The noise issue likely hasn’t been sorted out, just that it is no low enough
that the hairball doesn’t fault

High power demand under acceleration could indicate current leaking to the
motor hull and messing up the car chassis ground (?)  Brush dust issues have
kept me troubled too many times with weird problems.

Hi Brains Trust,

I have a Z1k LV.
My hairball gives me errors 1141 and 1124 when I try to accelerate in any gear
(worst in 5th, and least bad in 1st)

The manual tells me 1141 is contactor high resistance. my DMM measuring the
voltage across the battery and controller inputs to the hairball puts the
voltage drop at 15mV for 100A (battery amps that is). Which looks about right
for a  good contactor

The contactor always drops out when I turn the ignition off, and my DMM
measures 92v across the contactor (measured at the hairball terminals). My
conversion is 96v nominal (actual battery voltage is 102v, though the little
white light on the hairball must act as a voltage divider, dropping 10v)

I opened the hairball, and it looks clean inside - nothing looks damaged
visually.

Any ideas on what to check next?
Is it possible to see what the hairball is measuring as the voltage drop across
the contactor?

thanks in advance,
Matt
