Re: [EVDL] tractor conversion

2014-01-21 Thread Buddy Mills
I have restored a few ICE tractors. In all the ones I have done, real
tractors, the motor and transmission is part, if not all of the chassis. If
you remove the motor you will lose a lot of support. Are you planned on
using the existing motor somehow to retain the chassis support?

Re: [EVDL] Regen efficiency, was: How can regen be a reason to buy or not?

2014-03-20 Thread Buddy Mills
So much math...it hurts my head. Regen good. It kicks in, the amp gauge
goes positive.
As for the setup; I have a switch on the dash. Position 1, it only works
when the brake is applied. Second position. it work when I let off the
accelerator. Third position it is turned off. I also have a disengage
switch on the clutch to keep the motor from coming to a dead stop when it is
working off the accelerator and trying to shift gears. And last but not
least my BMS turns off regen if my SOC is above 80% as to not overcharge the
battery pack.

Excluding the battery efficiency for simplicity and considering the
situation from the point of view of energy provided by or received by the
battery:

Consider a 1000kg (approx. 2200lb) vehicle travelling 50km/h (approx.
30mph); it has a kinetic energy of 96450.6J.

Using your numbers above, 96450.6J/(0.95 x 0.85 x 0.90) = 132715J were
provided by the battery to achieve this.

Regenning to a complete stop provides 96450.6J * (0.95 x 0.85 x 0.90) =
70095.5J to the battery.

So, (0.95 x 0.85 x0.90) = 72.7% of the available kinetic energy is provided
to the battery, however only 70095.5J returned / 132715J consumed = 0.528,
or 52.8% of the battery energy consumed in achieving that kinetic energy
level is recovered.

Joules aren't a unit that means a lot to some of us (though SI units are
easy to work this example in ;^), so let's convert it to something more
familiar:

1J = 1W-second, so 70095.5J = 19.47Wh.

If we assume that you accelerate to 50km/h and then regen to a stop every
500m (so you start from a stop at 0m and are again stopped at 500m), then
out of every 500m travelled you recover 19.47Wh.

So, how much does this extend your range?

If your vehicle consumes 200Wh/mi (=200Wh/1609m) at 50km/h, then every 500m
you recover enough energy to travel a further 156.6m: 156.6m/500m = 31%
increase in range.

Another way to look at it is that accelerating to speed after the stop
consumes 132715J from the battery; this is 36.86Wh, or enough energy to
travel 296.6m at constant speed.

So, regenning to a stop allows you to recover enough energy to travel
another 156.6m, but avoiding the stop in the first place saves you enough
energy to travel 296.6m further.

Obviously, the shorter the distance between each start and stop, the greater
the % range increase appears. How high can we push it? Let's assume it
takes us 5s to accelerate to 30mph (50km/h) and 5s to regen back to a stop.
Let's assume that we accelerate to speed and then immediately regen to a
stop, and continuously repeat this pattern.

During each acceleration we travel 34.7m and during each deceleration we
travel another 34.7m. So, for every 69.4m travelled, we consume 132715J to
accelerate, plus about 31055J (69.4m @ 200Wh/mi) = 163770J. We recover
70095.5J, which is enough to travel (70095.5/163770) = 42.8% further in this
inefficient driving pattern.

Lawrence,
You might want to give - http://www.orionbms.com/ - a call. I am using
their BMS and am very impressed. Not only with the unit but also the
support. I do not use it with a Leaf battery but the website does say it
works with LiMn2O2. My price was less than $1,500.00. It is pretty slick
and uses CANBUS. I have it connected to a Android tablet with the app
"Torque" and monitor everything. My voltage and resistance of each battery,
temp of my battery compartment, total voltage, AMP draw, high low cell and
it even has a SOC calculator that has not let me run out of juice yet. It
uses CANBUS to control my charger and will even turn on fans to circulate
air to the battery box at user defined temps. This interface has become the
focal point of my car "show and tell" because people understand the visual
graphic better then a bunch of batteries and wires. Not sure if Orion can
help but it could not hurt to ask.

it a good idea to go lower voltage as lithium is stiff/doesn't sag much just

I am 6hrs from Santa Cruz, so I am trying to find a way to make contact with

Mark, Why do you say that EV conversions are under the radar? I just got
mine inspected and it passed just like years past. However it is still
titled as a ICE mostly because back in 2009 the DMV could not or did not
know how to do the paperwork. My taxes are $9.50. So I just kept it that
way. The place I carry it for inspection knows that it is an EV. In fact I
keep hearing the same tired joke each year.*1 Are there any things I should
be wary of?

[EVDL] Straping and connecting LiFeP0

2013-09-21 Thread Buddy Mills
I finally joined the ranks and purchased and picked up my LiFEP04. (42
cents Ah). Now I need to install. If the list serve thought my questions
were novice before wait till you get a load of my latest ones.

1st to strap. What type of strapping have others used? Metal,
Polypropylene, polyester strapping? I am going to strap 8 cells, 2X4 with a
Aluminum Plate 8" X 9" on each end. I was thinking three strap per group.
Also what is the cheapest kit or individual tools that anyone has to used to
do the job. My second question is interconnecting between the strapped
cells. since the 8 cells will be stationary to each other, within the 8pack,
can they be connected with a solid piece of copper or aluminum plate between
the terminals? Between the 8 packs I know I will need a flex loop, be it
wire or metal strip. Also can someone point me in the direction to figure
out the width and thickness this plate and interconnects should be in either
copper or Alum? I will be running about 300 amps max at 192 volts. Normal
driving my amp meter is between 100 and 170 amp.

Battery specs - Max Continuous Discharge Current 10% to 90% DOD, Active
Cooling 180 A (3C) (times two parallel cells = 360 A)

Thanks all,

I fell into this deal via another EV owner. International Battery of NJ,

As I have been telling friends, If you rupture your GAS TANK, and there

out to safety.

Puncturing the battery pack on the TESLA-S probably caused a series of
shorts, and wires and batteries had a "thermal runaway"

I would LOVE to know the time-line from the owner.
From the moment of striking the metal on the road
to the first sign of a problem, to the first smoke, and finally catching
other stuff on fire.

Any one out there in the TESLA community can add these facts to the

I would guess several minutes or more.

Re: [EVDL] Charge profile on Zivan NG3 for 108V US Battery 125's

2013-10-22 Thread Buddy Mills
If I am assuming correctly that Zivan and Elcom is the same distributor I
had the same experience with my Elcom. It was charging my Deka Gel 12volt
(8G31) to 242volts (15 batteries) where Deka stated the max was 214volts. I
went around with them and the company (not to be mentioned) that I purchased
the Elcom from to no avail. I finally purchased 4 Pro SeriesX4 to charge
each battery individually. Surprise, surprise the total voltage when
charging was max out at 214 volts, right to Deka specs.
Recently I started to convert to Lith and sold my 4 year old batteries to
the local Fishing Spot that rents out batteries by the day. He tested each
battery and all read between 105ah to 125ah. Well above the 97ah
specs...not bad for 4 year old batteries. I only had about 10k miles on
them which works out to 333 cycles on them at full charge (it was more like
double that with less than full charge). My point is I believe they
survived above expectation because I insured that they were not overcharged
and did not used the Elcom.
BTW I never got my Elcom charger back or my money. But then most of you have
already hear that story.

[EVDL] LiFePO4 internal resistance

2013-11-27 Thread Buddy Mills
Happy Turkey Day,

So my question is.if I have two batteries hooked in parallel and the
internal resistance for one battery is 2m ohm. Is the correct resistance
for both now 1m ohm? I am working with my new Orion BMS and I can
compensate for the busbars in the program. It is reading 3.71 m ohms per
connection which is two batteries in parallel. So is my real resistance 2 m
ohm? 4m ohms or 1m ohms is my query. I believe it is like any other two
resisters in parallel and my new resistance is 1m ohm per set. Which means
my busbars are contributing 2.71m ohms.

Thanks in advance for any help.

[EVDL] Storing / charging LiFePO4

2013-12-27 Thread Buddy Mills
What is a low cost way to keep/store batteries. I have 18 LiFePO4 cell left
over from my switch from lead setting in a box. I got extras for backup and
need to store them until I might need them. I know they should be a stored
at ½ charge but is there anything else I need to do. I also would like
recommendation on a low cost way to charge them for their respite. I would
prefer something out of the box that I can purchase. I would be willing to
charge them in parallel, individual or groups. And last but not least can
someone tell me how I know that they are at ½ charge for storage. The specs
are 40ah with 3.6 volt max, 2.5 volt min and nominal of 3.2.

Thanks in advance,

So, not content with 100 years of greed-fueled destruction of the earths
atmosphere through the squandering of a very finite resource, just when
progress is being made to progress Humanity down a more responsible road to
a cleaner and more sustainable future for us and and the Earth in general,
Big Oil comes along and says "No! You don't want to do it like that! Lets
do the same thing all over again" and cause earthquakes, rising sea levels,
destruction of ground water systems and an even more poisonous atmosphere.
Sounds like the plot from '2012'.

[EVDL] Replacing Auxiliary Battery

2014-08-21 Thread Buddy Mills via EV
I am replacing my auxiliary battery(ies)for my 12 volt system. Presently I
have two group 31 Deka 8G31 (70lbs each) over the front bumper. They were
left over from my old lead days before I converted to Lithium and fit the
spot at the time. My question is "What plays better with the DC to DC
converter. Gel? AGM? or just an old fashion lead auto battery? I need
something with some ump so that I can run my 12vdc to 120vac converter (it
runs my heaters). So just a small 12v will not cut it. I also like to
trickle charge it with a small charger while plugged in and charging the
Traction Pack. Any suggestions.

[EVDL] DC2DC times 2

2014-08-28 Thread Buddy Mills via EV
I need some help with spec(s) on a filter diode. I am attempting to hook up
two DC to DC in my car along with a battery for my Aux 12volts. Yes, I know
that seems excessive but I need the extra to run my 12dc to 110vac inverter

place a diode on the output as to not give feedback to either of the DC2DC. My
problem is I don't know what specifications I need to use. Plus if someone
could also tell where I could purchase it I would be most appreciated. I know
that there are quite a few of you on the list that would probably know this off

Battery is a Durcel AGM SL34M (20 amp hour rate - 55, Reserve Capacity:120

DC2DC #2 Azure DC-DC750 - 56amps

DC2AC inverter Cobra 2575 - 2500watts cont. - 5000watt peak

Buddy,
You can use one of the Schottky diodes that is ideal for this
architecture,
typically they come in a block with 2 diodes integrated and ready to
mount to a heatsink, the only thing you need to take care of is to
insulate the diode housing from the chassis of your vehicle as the
housing has the output to the + of your battery while the chassis of
your vehicle is always connected to the aux battery negative.
You can find these diodes searching Ebay with "Schottky 200A" or
"Schottky CNQ"
Examples are the IR 203CNQ100 (100V, 200A) or 301CNQ045 (45V, 300A)

Re: [EVDL] Vacuum Switch

2014-09-15 Thread Buddy Mills via EV
Thanks for all the responses. I already have two round tanks (4" PVC X
10"long) connect together via a pipe. The vacuum pump is fairly quiet now
that I have made a insulated box both outside and inside with a hole for
air. It is rubber mounted both the pump to the box and the box to the
frame. The vacuum switch I have now is too sensitive and I prefer a long
draw every three to 4 brakes to a short burst every time I touch the brakes.
I have ordered a switch to try and if it does what I want I will post the
results later.

Thanks to all for the advice,

[EVDL] Under Body Pan

2014-09-18 Thread Buddy Mills via EV
Has anyone else installed a body pan for aerodynamics? I just put one under
my electercel front to back, minus a 9" for a fan intake. .064 Sheet
aluminum with some 1" square tube under the motor bay for support. After
doing my regular drive of 84 miles round trip several times it seems to
getting 3% to 6% increase in mileage at ~50mph avg. I am thinking fender
skirts on the rear next.

Mathew,

Check out these Colorado companies:
http://evolveelectrics.com/
http://boulderhc.com/services/

Evolve can provide the parts and Boulder Hybrids can assembly the battery pack
with BMS even though its not listed as a standard service.

Best,

Byron

[EVDL] LiFePO4Charging

2014-09-25 Thread Buddy Mills via EV
I thought I understood how to charge my 9 month old LiFeP04 but know I am
doubting my process. So I will lay it out and see what feedback the battery
gurus here can suggest.

I have 132 60AH batteries in 2P66S. So I am going to call this 66 batteries
at 120AH. Specs call for 3.6 volts max, so 66 in serial is 237.7 volts. I
don't want to push them so I set the max voltage at 231volts charge which
brings me to approx 3.5 volts per battery. Now in real life once it is at
this 231 volts for the string each individual battery voltage is approx 3.34
volts +/- 0.10 volt. Even at the plus side of that each battery would be
3.44 volts or 227.04 volts for the string. So how is it that my charger
string voltage is reading 334 - 335 volts while each battery is reading
3.34? Does it matter if the total voltage is over the max (66 X 231) as
long as the individual voltage is less 3.5 volts? Should I set my BMS
charge voltage cutoff higher and just leave each cell set at the 3.5 volts
max. Hope I am making sense.

Thanks in advance for any feedback,

Tomw,

Thanks for catching that. I missed typed it should have been 234 to 235
volts. But to answer your question the 234-235 volts is when I tell the BMS
to restrict the total voltage higher to see if the cells will ever reach
3.5v. So I guess from reading other comments, the lost is from the
resistance in my interconnect. I did not realize that the draw from my
connections would have this much drop on charge.
To answer the other questions my charger is an eltek Valere with a Orien
BMS. The measure voltage on each cell and the total pack is via the BMS
after the balance but before the fully charged phase.

So at this point I assume that turning off the total pack restrictions to
allow for loss and limiting each battery to 3.45 (was 3.5) is my best
charging regiment.

Thanks,
Buddy

I noticed the Juicebox comment that there was no display so you couldn't tell
what was going on. Many charge controllers don't have displays like my ge also
but the OpenEvse.com charger comes standard with amps time andKWH display for
about $400.  I put a 240v 14/50 plug on so it's portable too.  It's the best

Lithium really made a difference.

March 2009 to Sept 2013 only 2,614 miles with Lead, could only do about 35
miles on a charge.
Sept 2013 to March 2014 down for upgrade to LiFePO4
March 2014 to May 2015 7,428 miles with Lithium and no degradation seen so far.
84 miles round trip to work.

[EVDL] Azure DMOC445 Programming

2018-10-28 Thread Buddy Mills via EV
Does anyone know how to get the DMOC out of test mode? I replaced the
controller circuit board with a new one I purchased a few years ago. It
will NOT communicate to the ccShell. However when I connect to a TTY
terminal program and power on to says "test 5 and 6 passed, press r to
return" I assume that it is in some kind of a testing mode but do not know
how to put it into service. I am hoping that it is a simple "press this key
and then that one. Worst case is a PROM that is not loaded, if so, then I
guess I am screwed. The manual stops at "if you didn't see ...xyz" then
call Azure.

Where I take my EV for inspections is a local "good old Boy" shop. They
have a dog that the second I pull up he comes over to my car and pees on the

We figure it might be some high pitch sound or other unknown phenomenon that
make him react this way.

Electric vehicles are _less_ noisy to wildlife, but not silent in their
hearing range.

While the low frequency noises from the engine and exhaust are eliminated,
the high-pitched electronic noise can be quite loud to wildlife (and those
of us that can hear ~17 kHz and
above.) The controller switching frequency of is above the typical person's
threshold of hearing, but my cats would greet me in the driveway every
evening that I would come home from work in my EV. They could hear me coming
a block away. My wife can definitely hear the controller in our Prius and
also in our Leaf.

Re: [EVDL] 12v tales

2016-06-06 Thread Buddy Mills via EV
I have a AGM 12v for aux and controller. I have a small charger wired in
permanent so while charging main pack it too is topped off. The DC2DC hardly
has to work. Since I charge daily the vampire current has not been a problem.
7 years and no problems... so far.

[EVDL] Azure AC24LS and DMOC445 Help!

2018-06-28 Thread Buddy Mills via EV
To the all-knowing great EV List:

A while back my Electercel became a 2600lb paperweight. It is now time to
try to resurrect it.

Background.Azure AC24LS / DMOC445 with 132 Lithium 2P66S for about 210 to
220 VDC running for a few years with 18k EV Miles.

Hot summer day (air cooled), may have over revved motor?(no tach ), lost
physical power and coasted to side of road, towed home.

Problem: press accelerator motor moves slowly and car will inch forward with
very little power. Minimum amps being drawn.

Have full voltage to DMOC but have not tested at motor due to location.
Have CCshell but it does not show any problems or error code as far as my
limited knowledge can tell. Using BMS and Volt meter all seems well with
battery pack.

My thoughts is the motor was over heated and may have burned. I do have a
spare but would like to hear from list serve before running wire from DMOC
to new motor. Going to be a PITA to replace but will do if I can be sure
that is it and not something in the DMOC.

Suggestions? Anything I could look at in the CCShell? Way to test old
motor directly without DMOC?

Thanks in advance

[EVDL] Azure AC24LS and DMOC445 Help Part Deux

2018-07-03 Thread Buddy Mills via EV
This may be more of a general question. Does it matter how the 3 wires from
the DMOC connect to the AC24L? I have the motor set up as a Delta 3 phase.
The DMOC has the ends labeled as A,B and C but there is no indication on the
motor, just 3 poles. Does it matter on this 3 phase setup or can any
connector go to any connection? Any help will be appreciated.

2018-07-03 Thread Buddy Mills via EV
Thanks for the reply. I have temporary hooked up the new spare motor and it
is as I expected... The old one is kaput. Glad I bought the spare on eBay
a few years back when I had the opportunity. Now the fun starts replacing
the old one. Hopefully it will be back on the road by end of July. This
time I will take the time to set up the CAN to read the temp and RPMs.

I too have increase my knowledge via the list serve and a few direct email
conversation with Roland

I believe Roland fits the Albert Pike quote:
"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for
others and the world remains and is immortal."

Add me to the long list of people who will miss Roland Wiench’s posts. I
enjoyed hearing about his robust approach to engineering informed by data
collection built around his daily drive. The way he described it, his EV had a
switch for everything; all failure modes were addressed, regardless of how
remote their occurrence. It appears he lived a long, satisfying life and I’m
glad he posted to this list.

Re: [EVDL] Azure AC24LS and DMOC445 Help Part Trois

2018-08-29 Thread Buddy Mills via EV
Help Please...I really would like to get my EV back on the road.
Replacing the motor did not fix the problem so here is what I have.
Press accelerator and wheels move (while jacked up )slowly and jerk. Amp
gauge max out at 50 amp (normally goes to 200 amps plus when it was working.
Reading full voltage, ~220DC to controller. Motor seem to work when I had
it out of the car without a load. All seems to be ok with trans, CV joints,
etc. Spun up on the table but I did not check the RPM or attempt to put a
load on it. (it did throw the shaft key across the garage...opps)

Any help would be appreciated.

Also what are the differences between the DMOC 445 and UMOC 440? If not
using CAN interface can the UMOC replace the DMOC without too many changes.
Does the CCShell work the same on both?
