[EVDL] DC - DC Iota DLS-55/IQ4

2020-08-27 Thread David Delman via EV
I am in the process of changing my 156v DC lead-acid eLectric DeLorean to
lithium. I am using eight Tesla Battery Modules for a total of ~202v DC
maximum.

Previously I was using an Iota DLS-55 to keep my auxiliary battery
charged. It worked great and fit well too.

Is there a way to run the Iota off the new, higher pack voltage?

Thank you,

David Delman

[EVDL] Is it worth it?

2020-01-21 Thread David Delman via EV
I've had my eLectric DeLorean, eD, since 2007. With its 15.6kwh lead acid
pack I can get 40 miles on a charge. I've moved to New Jersey and sold off
my other, gas powered DeLorean. I would really to bring eD to car shows
but I figure I need a 100 mile range to make it effective.

Forty kwh of Tesla battery modules, a BMS and new charger will cost over
$10,000. I don't need 1000 battery amps anymore. I won't be doing any drag
racing.

Are there any less expensive 40kwh lithium batteries that can fit in a 28"
x 28" x 13" space?

I can get a used EV for $10k.

Is it worth switching to lithium?

Thank you,

David Delman

[EVDL] EV Conversion~Registration in New Jersey

2019-09-22 Thread David Delman via EV

Does anyone have experience registering an EV conversion in New Jersey?

My eLectric DeLorean is registered in New York but I will be moving to New
Jersey soon and want to avoid any problems.

Re: [EVDL] EV Storage

2019-04-16 Thread David Delman via EV
Thanks for the ideas Jay. It really isn't practical for me to remove the
batteries and rewire them in parallel.

I was wondering if I could build a simple "trickle charger" for the entire
pack.

I envision an isolation transformer 120vac in and 120vac out. The output
connected to a full wave bridge rectifier with perhaps an incandescent
light bulb in series with the output to limit the current.

This would supply ~169.68 vac peak or just over 13v per cell. Provided
that the output of the transformer was really 120vac...

The question is, if I start out with balanced batteries will they stay
balanced while being trickle maintained in series...?

If this is a one-time park long term storage type situation, perhaps you
could remove the batteries (or at least, their terminals) and wire all 12
in parallel and then use a small float charger on the whole set at once?

Alternatively, what is the self discharge rate of AGM's vs the projected
length of storage? If it's just for a few months, you could possibly just
charge them up fully and then disconnect them and be ready to recharge when
you return.

What is the groups advice for keeping the batteries charged and balanced?

[EVDL] 2019 Lithium Recommendations

2019-01-16 Thread David Delman via EV
I am interested in improving the range of my eLectric DeLorean. Presently
with 13 Sears PM1 12v 100ah AGM lead acid batteries (975 pounds) I can get
40 miles if I am very careful.

I am interested in getting 100+ miles if possible.

Any suggestions?

Their answer, use streaming for AM...

Re: [EVDL] Best deal on Lead Acid for conversion?

I say, "Lead is NOT dead!"

I dont known of any price comparable lithium battery that will give the
1000+ amps that my Sears PM-1 battery can deliver.

It all depends on what you want your battery to do. High current output,
battery cycles etc.

I struck a deal with my local Sears Auto store and bought 13 of them at a
very significant discount.

Re: [EVDL] Design News: Why Aren't Electrical Cars Sales (Leases) Better

2015-05-20 Thread David Delman via EV
Not sure if this was mentioned but I was considering leasing a Tesla. The
lease came out to $1600/month for an $81,000 Tesla more than three times
the $499 that I am now paying for the lease in my $51,000 Infiniti Q50.

When I asked why there was such a price difference, this is the answer I
received.

Well, that is the question I get to answer every day.  First, Infiniti is
a high volume vehicle, with a long history, this makes money available at a
ridiculous low rates, backed by Infiniti.  Also very aggressive residual,
and residual history.  Higher interest rates, plus lower residual, and a
vehicle $3 more equals higher payment.  It’s hard to compare any of the
manufacturers deals to the Tesla model.

The Tesla is a fantastic car, but because they are in limited quantity,
high demand, and virtually a new manufacturer, you can’t compare to the TV
advertisements run for bulk vehicle movement.

Thank you,
Dave Delman
