Re: [EVDL] Using the LEAF drivetrain in a conversion
To my knowledge, no one has seriously attempted this yet. There are links in this thread to the people who are trying to do it with the ECU, LBC, etc from a Leaf (basically the whole drive and battery system). But, like you, I'd really rather not have to do this. However, I have a 2012 driving Leaf and I've gotten several captures from the power train bus. I also have a 2012 inverter and motor on the bench. And, within my github repos there is a project that generates the proper security byte for inverter control messages. So, you'd think I could make the stuff work. I have had luck in doing this several other oem drive trains. But, I just haven't gotten around to trying it very seriously yet. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to do. Perhaps I should make more effort to get over to the bench and try it. After all, there are more Leafs on the road (by far!) than any of the other drive systems that have been cracked. The Leaf system is 90kW I think which is a pretty good size for a small car. Being able to use salvage drive trains from these cars would really be something. As a bonus, I have a 2013 driving Leaf too. So, if anyone wants to send me a 2013 or newer motor and inverter I'd give that a whirl too. ;) Anyway, I've got all the parts to make this happen I just need a swift kick in the pants. So, maybe people should bug me every so often until it happens. PS: mynissanleaf.com is a good resource for technical info on the Leaf. Here's a huge thread about CAN message decoding: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=44=4131 On Thu, Jan 5, 2017 at 2:35 PM, Bill Collins via EVwrote: > Has anyone been able to talk to the LEAF inverter directly? Re: [EVDL] Using the LEAF drivetrain in a conversion
I would really like to put a Leaf drivetrain in a 2000 Honda Insight. I have two Insights and just bought a 2014 Chevy Volt, so I have time to work on my 'project cars'. At 1850 lbs, I would think the Insight with a Leaf system would be very quick and have considerable range. Not sure how much work would be required on an adapter plate for a Leaf motor to Insight transmission would be? I wonder if anybody has tried this conversion. I can look at the Service Docs (esp wiring diagram) to figure out what signals go where. I see that the inverters sell on Ebay for $700. NOTE that the 2013+ Leaf inverter is different from the 2011/2012 model, since the 2011/2012 have everything in separate boxes: power control (switching the HV) is in a separate box near the firewall, charger is in a separate box behind the rear seat and the inverter is in a separate box above the motor. For the 2013+ everything is integrated in one layered box above the motor.
