2020-09-06 Thread EVDL Administrator via EV
> I think the hubris f150 is supposed to get about 10 miles electric range

John Lussmyer has spoken for himself, but I'll add that he's posted here in
the past that his converted F-250 uses about 600Wh/mi. So let's say that,
as an irresponsibly wild guess, a lighter F-150 kitted out with some aero
mods might get this down to 450Wh/mi.

A 65kWh battery - not at all overly optimistic these days - would give 115
miles of range at 80% DOD. That's moderately useful range for some kinds of
truck applications. Whether potential buyers will see it that way is
another matter.

One of the Rivian layouts has a 180kWh battery, which would give a usable
range of 320mi at 450Wh/mi. That's a lot of energy storage! But it would
make for a pretty pricey pickup.

There may be a market for an EV like this, but it's hard to imagine it being
big enough to warrant the effort Ford is putting into it. I wonder if maybe
this is an exercise in developing an EV truck for EU and Asian markets. I'd
expect them to use the Ranger as a base instead, though, since IIRC the
Diesel Ranger is the largest selling pickup in Europe (not that they sell
that many).

If they do nothing about the aerodynamics of a brick and the weight of a
locomotive, it will take 150 to 200kwh packs to get the range the
"public" demands. This will of course make the price prohibitively high.

John, how many pounds of lithium and kWh's does it take to get 60 miles?
My guess; a lot.

Since I can get 60+ miles range with my F250, 4WD, supercab, longbed - using
old Leaf Modules, I'm quite sure that Ford can get better range than that.
(and I still have a bunch of empty space under the hood.)
