It will just see it when you start Evolution (assuming it's all in the
same place). You don't have to tell it anything.

Ok, that sounds very good. So I just have to reinstall system and apps,
open Evolution and ??? Evolution ask for something or not ? Where can I
say to Evolution that there is an account in my Home directory ?

No - other than any limit your OS/partition imposes. Which at the
least will probably be about 2Tb.

Evolution will recognise the existing account. I've upgraded my system
lots of times - new hardware, new install of OS - and all I've ever
done is to copy over the same home directory and Evolution has just
started up with the same configuration and content as before. It knows
about and recognises data from old versions of Evolution and upgrades
databases and locations automagically. I haven't started with a virgin
home directory for about 10 years!

>
> About the compressed tar file, what are the directory compressed ?

It depends on your version of Evolution. In general you can find the
location of the data in the builtin help

Help -> Contents -> Common other questions -> Data storage locations

The tar file will not contain the cache files and the configuration
settings are dumped from DCONF to a file, otherwise it is just a
straight compressed tar file of the data directories.

> Did Evolution have all his directories in my home/ hidden
> directories?

Yes. (Because Evolution runs as a user process it won't be sure to have
permissions to store things elsewhere.)

Hi Andre,

Thank for your answers

No problem with disk space were the home directory is located:
/dev/sdb1 777G 107G 669G 14% /home

And as I anserwed to Patrick my home directory is not located on the
same disk as system (I have a SSD 256 for the system and a HDD 2To for
all other directories)
Actually my last backup of Evolution was around 20Gio (a little more)
is it possible that there is a limit ?

About debugging I don't want to make you and me lost some time because
I'm quite sure it's because my system is very unstable... I have
Evolution on my Laptop and it's more or less the same backup/ restaured
file (around 20Gio) and backup seems to work fine.
I only do that if you think it will be useful for you and other
devollopers.

Best regards
Philippe

Hi Patrick,
Thank for your answer.Yes I have already done that and on this computer
my home directory is not on the same disk as system. So I will not have
to format this partition.
But I need to know, when I will reinstall the system and apps, did the
fresh install of Evolution recognize my "old" account ? Or have I have
to do something ?
About the compressed tar file, what are the directory compressed ?
Did Evolution have all his directories in my home/ hidden
directories?
Thank againPhilippe

If your email account is setup as IMAP and you have not selected to sync
remote mail locally, then the backup will be very quick. For me it
usually just pops up and is gone. Did you open the tar file and see what
is in there?

But as Patrick suggested, copying your whole home directory will work,
and you will backup more than just Evolution.

That behavior makes me wonder how much free space is left on your hard
disk. Running "df -h" in a terminal window should tell you.

Also, having the window disappear sounds like a potential crash.
Can you start Evolution under gdb in a terminal window and get us a
stacktrace when/if it crashes? That will not include debug symbols by
default, so you have to either install or compile debug symbols. See
https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/Bugzilla/GettingTraces
for more information on how to do so.

Since you're going to reinstall your system, why not just back up your
entire home directory? The built-in Evolution backup is just a
compressed tar file anyway.

[Evolution] Buckup & Restore command dont work

2019-09-15 Thread Philippe PES
Hi all,

Context: I have had a bad crash on my main computer (probably due to
Amarok, not Evolution). Result of this crash is a very instable system,
return to English language without possibiliy to reset French language
and some annoying error like impossibility to save an attached file
receveid in a mail.
Ok, I have search for week on the web some tips to fix there and seems
worse than I have imagine.
So, I have to reinstall my system... This is an OpenSuse Tumbleweed
with KDE desktop on a classic tower machine, nothing exotic...

But before to do that I want to make some backup, ok with documents and
anyelses stuffs.

This morning, I try to backup Evolution with the file->Backup command
and ... don't work
Precisely I got the first dialog (name of the archive and location to
save), push ok button and have the second dialog (where you can choice
to restart or not Evolution when backup is finished )
and here when I clic GO the dialog disappear and nothing is running...

I'm quite sure is it not a bug with Evolution but probably due to my
system instability

Question : I need to know if it's possible to backup entirely my
Evolution mail, datas and configuration in another way ? like command
line ???

Thank you very much for help and apologize about my English that is
named Frenglish... ;-))

Regards
Philippe
