[Evolution] Need color-schemes that show vertical scroll bars

2016-05-11 Thread John Lauterbach
Right now running evolution 3.19.90 under Ubuntu 16.04.  Only color theme that
shows vertical scroll bars on evolution is highcontrast.  However, that color
scheme blanks out text that is highlighted.  What color scheme should I be
using?

[Evolution] presence of vertical scroll bars depends on color scheme

2016-05-09 Thread John Lauterbach
This applies to evolution 3.19.90 operating under Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.  Vertical
scroll bars on mail (column with list of folders) and lists of messages in a
folder only appear with certain themes, highcontrast, for example.  Is there a
reason for this?

Re: [Evolution] Import filetypes

2016-01-27 Thread John Lauterbach
Andre, I have just gotten into Outlook 2016, and then only to meet client needs.
Apparently only export options are PST and CSV.
The DBX format is apparently unique to the now defunct Outlook Express.

Could you elaborate how Outlook Express is different from Outlook when
it comes to data formats? Does Outlook only use PST nowadays and is DBX
only an Outlook Express format?
Asking as I have no Windows machine (or license) available.
Evolution does provide an "Outlook DBX import" plugin but that is not
covered in the docs (and it should not be covered if it is enabled by
default).
Specific improvement requests regarding the documentation page are
welcome, and contributing patches against
https://git.gnome.org/browse/evolution/tree/help/C/import-apps-outlook.page
is even more welcome (see https://wiki.gnome.org/Git/Developers ;).

Re: [Evolution] Import filetypes

2016-01-26 Thread John Lauterbach
Andre, the instructions are incomplete in that they do not include information
on importing Outlook Express (OE) dbx folders.  While OE is an obsolete product,
I still maintain my OE and the dbx folders on the Win XP side of my laptop.
When I moved over to evolution several years ago, I did not import the dbx
folders for inactive clients.  Recently, one of the inactive clients recently
became active, and I had no problem importing the client's dbx folder into
evolution.

Ah, I downloaded the version I have from Mint's software manager, which
currently hosts 3.10. Checking out Ubuntu's package listings (since Mint
is based off Ubuntu 14.04 LTS) it says that this is the latest version
available for 14.04 and that 3.18.x isn't supported until Xenial
(16.04). Is there any way I can get 3.18.x running on my machine?
(P.S. Cinnamon is based on Gnome 3 so it should be able to support Gnome
alerts.)

Re: [Evolution] email colours

2015-12-31 Thread John Lauterbach
Ian, upgrades to evolution require software that is only available in later
versions of the operating system.  If you upgrade to Ubuntu 15.10, you will get
evolution 3.16.2.  Ubuntu 15.10 is very stable (much more so than Windows 10),
and I have been using it on both 32-bit and 64-bit PCs w/o a problem.  Evolution
3.16.2 has a couple of bugs in it with respect to generating business-quality e-
mail that have been fixed with 3.18.2.  Getting from 3.16.2 to 3.18.2 requires
the gnome3-team and gnome3-team staging PPAs.

Thanks to John and Pete for your replies.

John, I have tried to install a later version but no luck. I found a ppa
(ppa:fta/gno,e3) which has 3.16.1, but when I removed and reinstalled Evolution
it installed the same version again (3.10.4). It seems the official repositories
override any PPAs present, even if (or maybe because) they contain newer
versions. The only other download I could find was a tar.xz. I downloaded that
and started reading the README, I got about half way through and gave up, way
too complex for me to attempt.

Pete, I can't find anywhere to change themes in my version, in fact there is no
mention of themes at all. I couldn't view the help (selecting Help Contents did
nothing) so I found the help on the net. It had no mention of themes in it
either. Not sure where to look next.

Thanks,
Ian

Re: [Evolution] email colours

2015-12-30 Thread John Lauterbach
Hello Ian:

Please note that 3.10.4 is an obsolete version of evolution.  Serious users are
using much newer versions.

I am using 3.18.2 under Ubuntu 15.10, and some in the Ubuntu community would say
I am using "unapproved" software as I had to use PPAs from the Gnome3 -team and
Gnome3-team staging to get to where I want to be.  However, evolution is that
heart of my scientific consulting business; and earlier versions of had too many
problems both in terms of receiving e-mail from clients and vendors using
Microsoft-based e-mail servers and in terms of composing crisp, easy-to-read e-
mails I send to my clients.

Hi all,
I just installed Evolution 3.10.4 in Elementary linux, and found that my emails
have a black background with dark grey text. I can change it for outgoing
emails, but not emails in my inbox, which have the same background/text colour
combination (very hard to read for us old farts), Seems to be okay for HTML
emails, that is the text of the email is rendered correctly, but the header is
still almost impossible to read. Any advice on how I can change the default
colours? for incoming email and for outgoing?

Re: [Evolution] Undo does not work on Evolution 3.18 on Ubuntu 15.10

2015-12-05 Thread John Lauterbach
1. A big thank you to all who posted on how to upgrade 3.16.5 to 3.18.2
under Ubuntu 15.10.

2. The upgrade is not a big deal, but once you have enable the gnome3-
staging PPA, only update evolution, unless you are sure that Ubuntu Desktop will
not be removed in the process.

3. Undo using the Edit Undo and control-z appears to remove one character
at a time beginning with the most recent character typed.

4. The evolution-list is a big help to those of us who run our business
communications with evolution.

Hi.  Undo does not work.  For example: I have just used the Paste as
Quotation feature.  When hitting Ctrl+z to undo it, Evolution instead
erased all the contents of the email.  This is frequent.  Many times
Evolution has erased content (though usually not the entire email)
when I hit Ctrl+z.

This is evolution 3.18.2-0ubuntu1~wily1 from the gnome3-staging PPA.
The machine runs Ubuntu 15.10 with a few PPAs, including gnome3 and
gnome3-staging.

I recall that this problem also occurred on evolution 3.16 from Ubuntu main.

Re: [Evolution] Evolution crashes on startup

David,
Ubuntu 15.10 is well-behaved even with older hardware. Weekend before last, I
upgraded a 2007 model hp/compaq dx2200 from 15.04 to 32-bit version of 15.10.
Everything worked perfectly, including evolution 3.16.5.
Just make sure you have everything backed up (e.g. disk image as well as
evolution backup file on external hard drive before you do any upgrading. Also,
remember, once your evolution files have been used with 3.16.5 you cannot go
back to 3.10.4 because of differences in address-book file structure (or
something like that).

Re: [Evolution] Evolution crashes on startup

2015-11-30 Thread John Lauterbach
This is an inherent problem of evolution 3.10.4 running under Ubuntu 14.04.
There are a number of things in non-all-text e-mails that can do this.

Evolution is the main e-mail client for my business. It works okay for my
secretary because she generally gets simple e-mail. I get all sorts of stuff
with lots of graphics, ics calendar files, etc. The ONLY way to solve your
problem is to move to Ubuntu 15.10 and use evolution 3.16.54.

E-mail that used to cause all sorts of grief with 3.10.4, now doesn't cause any
problems.

I am running 15.10 or three PCs. All very stable.

Hi everybody,

"preformatted" ".

My evo is suffering from the same problem, but with ubuntu 15.04, at
the moment I seem to be restricted to evo 3.16.0. Is there another
solution than waiting for the update?

Cheers,

Re: [Evolution] evolution 3.10 not sending messages from one of my mail acounts

2015-09-25 Thread John Lauterbach
The powers that control Ubuntu apparently do not care much about evolution.
Right now, only way to keep evolution reasonably current is to use
developmental versions of Ubuntu. I am using 15.10 beta and that allows me to
run evolution 3.16.5. Over the past few months, I have been using 15.10 without
too many problems. I started with my "research" PCs before moving it into daily
use on my laptop.

Thank you very much Milan for your effort.
For me the problem is solved in evolution 3.10 since I could write smtp password
quiclky enough before the close of connection by server. Now I have the smtp
password in seahorse
and know what to do in order to send mail with ono account through evolution.
I will ask in ubuntu forums to introduce the patch in evolution data server in a
backport repository.

[Evolution] Question on placement of "Signature" Evolution 3.16.5

2015-09-16 Thread John Lauterbach
Is there a reason that evolution 3.16.5 (and earlier versions) only allows
placement of the "Signature:" at either the top of an e-mail of the bottom of an
e-mail? I have many cases when I need to add my business signature (contains my
full contact information) to an e-mail I am writing in response to an e-mail I
have received. I have "Signature:" set for bottom to cover e-mails I originate.
So,if I need to add a signature to a reply, It goes to the bottom of what can
be a series of e-mails. Okay I can cut the "Signature:" and put it where I want
to. Yes, it works most of the time and just takes a few more seconds.
Yesterday, the e-mail I was replying to, had an embedded graphic. Only way I
could get things to work was to do a copy and then paste and then delete the
graphic and "Signature:" that would not cut.

BTW, 3.16.5 is super and meets all of my needs.

Thank you,

John___

Re: [Evolution] Backing up Evolution Data

2015-09-08 Thread John Lauterbach
I checked this recently using evolution 3.16.5 running under Ubutnu 15.10 beta.
Used evolution backup routine (Backup EvolutionData). Saved backup file to
spare partition on my SSD. Then copied the backup file to a 3 TB Toshiba USB
drive. Moved drive over to another PC running same versions of evolution and
OS. Copied contents of USB drive to Desktop. Restored evolution form the
backup file and checked mail, contacts, etc.(I have evolution set not to check
mail on startup). Everything okay.

It would be a nice addition to evolution to be able to schedule backups at a
certain time each day. I use SpiderOak for offsite backup. If I could have
evolution do this automatically, I would never lose more than a day's e-mail.

What are the best practices for backing up Evolution data?

Though these are (mostly) general sorts of questions, I'm using
Evolution 3.16.5 on Fedora 22.

What specifically is backed up when you back up you "Backup Evolution
Data.."?

What can be done to ensure the entire email base is both downloaded
from the imap servers
and included in the backup archives?

Are contacts backed up? (including Google Contacts and CardDav
contacts)

How does this handle accounts that are created by "Gnome's Online
Account service"?

What happens if this backup is restored on a non-Gnome Linux machine?

Many Thanks___

Hello Patrick:
Not all of us are on servers. Also, my laptop (where mail evo with my business
-related e-mail) is on 24/7 except when going through airport security, etc.
The same for my two desktops. I cannot afford to loose what I have on the evo
on my laptop. Yes, one of my business e-mail accounts is IMPAX, but the ISP's
server does not store sent e-mail. Incremental backups are a thing of the past
with large capacity 2.5 inch SSDs. The partition where I keep by evo backups
(about 6 GB each still has more than 60 GB free space). They are also backed up
on SpiderOak. I do not see the objection to doing what works.

As has been said repeatedly, the "backup" command in Evo is not
intended for periodic backups but for when you need to move your Evo
installation to another machine. For one thing, it requires Evo to be
running (not much use if you want to schedule it at fixed times). For
another, it doesn't do incremental backups but takes a complete
snapshot every time. This is almost never what you want in a production
context. Use a real backup system, of which there are many in Linux (I
use rsnapshot to a local NAS, but YMMV). You are backing up your systemanyway
aren't you?
I think the command should have a different name to avoid this being
brought up time and again, though nothing occurs to me offhand.

Re: [Evolution] endless password prompt

2015-08-11 Thread John Lauterbach
Hello Milan:
This is a troublesome problem that has affected all versions of evolution I
have used up to and including 3.16.3. If the e-mail service provided has
technical problems, and evolution cannot connect with provider's server, for
example, evolution puts out this error and it effectively locks the account
until evolution can again make contact with the server. There should be a user-

I have several hundred folders and subfolders in my InBox. Just A to D takes
more than 100. Just sorting the e-mail from clients and vendors once read is a

It is not a matter of fixed disk space. I run 480 GB SSDs in each of my PCs,
with roughly one-half of each SSD set for Ubuntu and the other half for

Hi,
it's crashing in the library which reads the winmail.dat file. You
might probably want to install debuginfo package for that libytnef,
capture detailed backtrace and eventually report them the issue. I
believe it's related to the attachment itself (like other attachments
can survive without the crash).
If you want to just avoid the crash, then remove
module-tnef-attachment.* from
   /usr/lib/evolution/modules/
I suppose it's stored there, but it depends on your distribution. The
next start evolution will not try to parse the attachment. Please note
that the next update or reinstall will return the file back.

Hi,
install debug info packages for evolution-data-server and evolution,
then run evolution under gdb:
   $ gdb evolution --ex r
and reproduce the crash there. Once the gdb prompt stops due to the
crash (SIGSEGV) run these gdb commands:
   (gdb) bt
   (gdb) q
and for a quit prompt answer 'yes'. This will print a backtrace where
the evolution crashed.
The thing is that the tnef attachments require a tnef plugin to be
compiled. If you've it there, then it can also crash inside the plugin
and/or the library the plugin uses.

[Evolution] Ubuntu 15.10 Gnome and Evolution

2015-07-20 Thread John Lauterbach
Over the weekend, I was able to get the i386 version of Ubuntu 15.10 Gnome to
install on a hp-compaq dx2200 minitower (2007 vintage). This distribution came
with Evolution 3.12.11 already installed. Gnome version is 3.16.2. I realize
that 15.10 is still under development so that is why I tried this on a surplus
PC, and not on one of my production machines. However, I am wondering why a
more recent version of Evolution is not included. I was not able to find a
compiled build of 3.16.3 for i386 systems.

I posted on this list as the Ubuntu variant I tested is the one reportedly
built by the Gnome-3 team, and it uses the Gnome desktop, not the desktop
favored by Ubuntu developers. Also, unlike the regular Ubuntu distros that
come from Canonical, this one had evolution installed, No Thunderbird!

You'll have to ask on the Ubuntu lists about that. Despite recent
activity, this list, like Evolution, is supposed to be distribution
agnostic.
But perhaps they just haven't bothered to do it yet.

Re: [Evolution] Crash while inserting image whith hyperlink

2015-07-20 Thread John Lauterbach
Since switching to evolution almost two years ago, I have found various quirks
when attaching files, editing messages, receiving image-laden e-mail, and
sometimes even when sending messages with attachments. Many of these problems
have gone away since I have upgraded to 3.16.0 from earlier versions including
3.10.4. One thing that does help is shutting down evolution, and deleting the
http folder from /.cache/evolution , and then restarting evolution. This cache
can get quite large if you get much e-mail with images in them.

[Evolution] Backup strategy and move evolution data among two or more PCs

2015-07-11 Thread John Lauterbach
There appears to be much confusion on how to do this for those who are not on
servers.
I use my laptop for evolution (3.16.0 running under Ubuntu 15.04). I also have
a desktop with same version of evolution and same OS.
Home directories of both PC as well as other partitions on each SSD are backed
up remotely to SpiderOak.
I regularly backup evolution using the backup function and store the backups on
a SSD partition that is only for data files. In other words, I can reinstall
Ubuntu and not have to worry about overwriting evolution back up files. These
data partitions are also backed up on SpiderOak. Before doing backups make
sure evolution is set to NOT retrieve e-mails when first opened.
I also regularly move an evolution backup file to one of my desktop PCs. My
evolution backup files are about 5.6 GB in size so I copy the backup file to a
Western Digital Passport drive (500 GB). I then move the Passport drive to the
desktop PC and copy the backup file to the SSD on the desktop PC. I generally
place in the Desktop folder, but that is arbitrary choice on my part. I then
restore evolution to the desktop PC. Again, evolution on desktop had been set
previously NOT to retrieve e-mail when it is opened. Once the restore is
complete I visually check to see that important mail folders are still intact.
I have used this procedure for almost a year now, and the only problems I have
had are when the copy to/from Passport drive does not run correctly.
Thank you for reading. Please critique.

I'm one of those people that hated Unity when it came out; hence the
jump to Mint. I still go back and try it now and then, but I still can't
get on with it. Regarding Gnome 3 ... It looks like I'll have to sit
back and wait for Ubuntu to embrace Gnome 3 properly and see where it
goes ... and struggle in the mean time.

I think you might have to wait quite a while for that with Ubuntu -
AFAIUI there have been decisions made that Evolution is not their
favoured mail client and as such it does not receive any TLC.
Just out of interest, why stick with Ubuntu if it's not really giving
you what you want?

[Evolution] Configuration problem -- perhaps some instructions would help

2015-07-06 Thread John Lauterbach
Perhaps I am oversimplifying things, but it appears that the developers of
Evolution are working far ahead of those who compile the program for use with
various Linux distributions. It also appears that if it were not for the
efforts of Fabian Tassin, I would be stuck using a very outdated version of
Evolution. Right now, I am using 3.16.0 (Ubuntu 15.04) when I should be (if I
have interpreted the postings on this list correctly) using 3.16.3. I would be
more than happy to try configuring (compiling?), if I had some step-by-step
instructions on how to do it.

it depends on the columns you've shown in the message list. The Date

I suspect the original message doesn't contain the Date header. It is

[Evolution] 3.16.0 e-mail date coming out as ? instead of correct time/date

2015-06-25 Thread John Lauterbach
This is in regards to Evolution 3.16.0 running under Ubuntu 15.04.
Recently, some dates on non-USA e-mail have been coming out as ? instead of
26.06.15 14:57 (for example)
The latest case was two very important e-mails from a long-time correspondent
in Paris, France, area. They went to the bottom of my InBox. I would not have
known they were there except they flashed up on the screen as they came in.
Message header shows: Delivery-Date: Thu, 25 Jun 2015 12:09:46 -0700 .

Is there a reason for the ??

Re: [Evolution] new to evo

2015-06-20 Thread John Lauterbach
Hello Wolf:
The folks who control Ubuntu (Canonical) are not supporters of evolution. All
evolution versions that work with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS are obsolete as far as the
evolution developers are concerned. The only way around that problem that I
have found is to upgrade to Ubuntu 15.04 and got to the fta/gnome3 ppa and
download evolution 3.16.0. Please note, however, that there are differences in
address book format between newer versions on evolution and the older versions.
I have found that you cannot go back to 3.10.4 if you have upgraded to 3.16.0.

This is the third time you've posted the same message. Not the way to
get people to help you. Note that your version of Evo is several years
old and unsupported, so not everything is going to work.
Please accept my apologies for the multiple messages. Evo didn't produce
any success message, therefore I tried sending several times ago. Sorry!
Thanks for pointing me to the fact that I'm using a very much outdated
version. I followed this page:
http://linuxg.net/how-to-install-evolution-3-13-4-on-ubuntu-14-04-trusty-tahr-and-derivative-systems/
and added
ppa:fta/gnome3
to my package sources some weeks ago. But I'm not offered anything more
recent. what can I do to get 3.16? - I guess, this may rsolve quite some
problems.
Cheers,

[Evolution] Search folder has stopped updating

2015-06-11 Thread John Lauterbach
This applies to evolution 3.16.0 running under Ubuntu 15.04.
Yesterday, I was on a business trip and, for a time, I had to run
my laptop on battery power. I started having problems with my
search folder InBox -- AllAccounts updating. This search
folder picks up the InBox for one impax account and the original
InBox with the three remaining pop accounts. As of last evening,
the only way I can get the search folder to update is to go the
original InBox (or the impax InBox) and open each one of the new
messages. Refreshing the search folder does not work. The box
on automatically update for changes in source folders is ticker.
What has happened?

Re: [Evolution] WebKit editor undo problems

2015-06-11 Thread John Lauterbach
I compose all e-mail and reply e-mail in HTML with normal
formatting. I have had strange events occur when correcting a
mistake I have made or changing the wording in a phrase.
Backspacing a dozen or so characters can cause 3.16.0 to stall
and take CPU usage to 25% and grey-out the screen display. After
a few seconds or so, the backspace operation will complete and
the screen returns to normal brightness.
Today's business e-mails are the equivalent of typewritten
business letters of the past. They need to be formatted
correctly and look professional.

 Evo 3.16.2.1 on Fedora 22
I'm seeing some strange things with the webkit editor and I can't
find
any references to the problem - probably looking in the wrong
place.
The primary problem is that the undo when editing quoted replies
is
seriously borked. For instance, and apologies if this gets
difficult to
follow, take the text I sent myself - the words are numbered so
you can
see what happens:

on replying I get:

So the undone delete is not placed back in its original position.
Is this reproducible by others?
It's fairly annoying when trying to trim other people's posts and
you
get it wrong and then can't undo the delete.
It also seems to behave much better in HTML mode. (And I'm damned
if
I'm going to start composing all my emails in HTML.)

That's the best argument to use plain text.

Then using HTML is a bad idea.

+1

It's possible to format plain text too, doing __things__ like
__this__.
   You easily can indent text.

And you can draw

assumed you and the receivers are sane/professional and using a
fixed
space font.

Plain text is much better, when something should be professional.

Hi,
could you run evolution from a terminal, to see whether anything
is
claimed there? The search folders do not use any persistent
storage,
they are constructed on the fly, fully rely on the used folders
notifications of changes.

By opening each one of the new messages you mean exactly what?
Like
viewing its content, to get it into the search folder? I do not
know
your search criteria, but that's quite unlikely to help for me.

Refreshing the search folder does not work. The box on

Right, that's one option which can influence update, for not-so-
often
-visited-search-folders, where it doesn't make sens to update on
each
single change.

Just in case, could it be that the search folder has set some
additional filter, anything above the message list? There was
(maybe
still is?) a bug about inherited searches internally, but not
with a
visual indication in the UI, thus I would even try to change the
filter
from All Messages to something else and back, the same as
filling
something into the Search field, activate the search and then
delete
it, to turn off the searching.

Re: [Evolution] Places where Evolution stores its data

2015-05-28 Thread John Lauterbach
I am using evolution 3.16.0 under Ubuntu 15.04. I use SpiderOak as
my remote off-site backup service. The e-mail in Evolution is very
important to me. In one sense, it is my corporate file cabinet.
SpiderOak backs-up my evolution and other data files when there are
changes. In addition, when I make changes in evolution such as
adding a folder, I use evolution backup feature.
So, my question is which evolution folders need to be backed up when
they change in order to minimize data loss if something goes wrong?

My opinion is that:
1) You haven't said what version of Evo this is, but if it's the one
you used to post your message it's several years out of date.
2) Your directory listing gives no idea of how much space all this
takes up, so it's impossible to say if it's a problem.
3) Evo generally has a directory for each account, but some of these
look older than others. Perhaps some accounts were closed and re-
opened, or restored from a backup, or imported from a different
machine.

[Evolution] Delays in receiving IMAP e-mail

2015-05-27 Thread John Lauterbach
I am using evolution 3.16.0 running under Ubuntu 15.04. One of my e-

each e-mail server every 5 minutes. About a week ago, I noticed that
I was not getting e-mails from the IMAP account. When I used the

Is this normal behavior for evolution?

Some providers, including Google, use rate-limiting on their servers.
This can affect IMAP service, especially if Evo is set to use multiple
simultaneous connections. You can limit this in Edit-Preferences-
account-Receiving Options-Number of concurrent connections to
use. I
have it set to 2 for Gmail, but
YMMV.
Aside from that, make sure you've ticked check for new messages in

Hi,
Evolution relies on GLib to provide the information about
the default
and installed applications, which _I think_ uses a
different store for
it. You can try with:
   $ gvfs-mime --query application/pdf
though you won't see the difference now, when you've
corrected it (the
gvfs-mime has also a --set option). The returned query
should give the
same result as you see in the Evolution's UI.

[Evolution] How do I set evolution to use a particular program when opening e-mail attachments

2015-05-17 Thread John Lauterbach
Before I switched to Ubuntu 15.04 to use evolution 3.16.0,
evolution knew to use PDF Studio Pro to open PDF documents.
Files (Nautilus) is using the correct program. What do I
need to do to set it to use PDF Studio Pro to open PDF
attachments?

Hello Tom. You have found correct PPA. Please remember
that you need to be in Ubuntu 15.04 for 3.16.0 to work.
14.04 will not let software load.

[Evolution] Recovering saved messages puts HTML marks in recovered message

2015-05-03 Thread John Lauterbach
The following problem recently started (and apparently spontaneously)
with 3.13.7 operating under Ubuntu 14.04.2 on my DELL Vostro 3500.
For example, nbsp; is being put in at the end of every sentence.
Ampersands are being replaced by amp; and other strange marks such as
span id=-x-evo-selection-start-marker/spanspan id=-x-evo-
selection-end-marker/span/div/body/html are appearing in the
recovered text.
How do I keep this from happening? Using plain text format results
in e-mails that look less than professional.

[Evolution] Use of numbered items followed by tabs caused evolution 3.13.7 to crash

2015-03-22 Thread John Lauterbach
I was preparing a list of things my secretary and my Son are to do
while I am on a business trip this coming week.
I had ten lines of text each beginning with a numeral, followed by a
period and a TAB space and then a single line of text.
Every time I tried to send the e-mail evolution crashed.
When I replaced each TAB space, with two single spaces, I could send
the e-mail w/o evolution crashing. I even tried closing all other
jobs and rebooting.
What am I doing wrong?

[Evolution] Cannot get pop summary and other strange evolution 3.10.4 behavior

2014-11-20 Thread John Lauterbach

Running evolution 3.10.4 under Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit.

Strange behavior of evolution continues.

1.Some e-mails with html cause evolution to crash, but no bug
reports issues.

2.Keyring loses my evolution password. Why does this happen? Clue:
slow response from incoming mail servers seems to trigger this.

3.Performance of evolution with inbound.att.net on Port 995 is very

[Evolution] Some HTML messages cause evolution to take all resources

2014-10-04 Thread John Lauterbach
RE: Evolution 3.10.4 running under Ubuntu 14.04 on DELL Vostro 3500 with
8 GM RAM

Increasingly, evolution is taking over my PC when it encounters messages
written in HTML These are business-related messages that cannot be
ignored. This morning, I have had message take all available RAM and
all of a 6.6 GB swap file. This causes PC to lock up or become useless
for minutes at a time while evolution does its thing. These are not
new types of messages, but one similar to those I was receiving a few
weeks ago.

I hope someone can explain what is happening.

[Evolution] Evolution 3.10.4 -- CANNOT MAKE VALID BACKUP FILE

I need to transfer my Evolution 3.10.4 to another PC. This is urgent

attempt to restore my data. Archive size is 4.6 GB.

What do I need to do to get a valid backup file?

[Evolution] e-mail messages get lost on move to folder command

2014-08-25 Thread John Lauterbach
RE: evolution 3.13.4 running under Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit

This afternoon I was moving folders from Sent to other folders. In one
case, I moved 6 or 7 e-mail from sent to folder OhioState. The e-mails
are no longer in Sent. They did not make it to OhioState. They are not
in Trash. They do not appear to be in other folders. Where did they go?
How do I search all folders and subfolders for these meassages? I know
the recipients e-mail address. Right now it appears that I can only
search one folder at a time?

How do I find the missing e-mails?

[Evolution] Evolution 3.13.3 -- e-mail destroyed when Send clicked

2014-08-05 Thread John Lauterbach
I have my messages destroyed twice today. I am replying to a request for
comments on an e-mail with an attached document. The original e-mail also
contains a trademark like graphic from the sender's employer. In both
cases, the message simply disappeared. It is not in Trash. It is not in
Outbox. After sending, Evolution asks to recover the message, but it
brings up the last version save as a draft.

This appears to be a very serious error that warrants immediate attention
by the developers.

[Evolution] Moving e-mails from one folder to another

2014-05-17 Thread John Lauterbach
I am using Evolution 3.2.3 running under Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit. I am
still having difficulty moving e-mail from one folder to another. If I
group e-mails by sender in InBox, I can move each of those groups of
e-mails to a folder/subfolder I maintain for each sender. If I group
e-mails in Sent by recipient and want to move them to a folder or
subfolder, Evolution tells me the folder or subfolder does not exist.
The same thing happened when I moved mail from a subfolder called
CompanyA to a sub-subfolder named EmployeeA which is under CompanyA. I
have hundred of e-mails in Sent that need to be moved to various folders
and subfolders.

How can I do this efficiently?
