[Evolution] Outbox auto flush

2014-10-22 Thread Michelle
Hi Folks,

New to Evolution, using 3.10.4 on Mint 17, 64 bit.

The mail client runs all day and filters sling important personal e-mail
to my mobile phone account when I'm at work, but although the filters
themselves are working, the mail is sitting in the outbox and aren't
being sent.

I read old forum threads about, "invisible options," and various other
bits about settings in the gconf editor which aren't present in mine.

The other folders auto sync fine, but just not the outbox.

Most of my day is spent away from home and this is an important thing
for me. Any help gratefully appreciated.

Sorry folks,

I think I've mucked up my filters.

Disregard this as it is sorted out.

My apologies.

[Evolution] MAIL FROM timeout

2014-10-28 Thread Michelle
Hi Folks,

Sending e-mails (and auto flush of the outbox on filtered, forward
e-mails) are failing sometimes with errors like...

MAIL FROM command failed: TCP connection reset by peer

... and "timeout" reports. It takes a couple of resend attempts before
e-mails will go.

Any ideas where I can look to adjust "timeout" settings please?

Michelle.

Hi Milan,

I'm on 3.10.4. Obtained through the repos that Mint use, so probably the
Ubuntu repos.

I'll try an update/upgrade in a few minutes.

Thanks for the heads up :-)

Just did an update/upgrade. Still at 3.10.4. Looks like I'll have to
stay here until the repos catch up.

Thanks for the heads up, though. Now that I know there's an issue in
this ball park, I know to sit and wait.

Re: [Evolution] Configuration problem -- perhaps some instructions would help

2015-07-06 Thread Michelle
Hi Folks,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm on Mint 17.1 Cinnamon and Evolution 3.10.4,
which is fine except for the problem that I get error messages on
sending, forcing a few retries, which is no real bother when I'm sat
here, but the automatic forwarding of e-mails to my mobile when I'm not,
then becomes unreliable.

I'd posted about that before, and was told that the problem had been
solved on a later release. I continued to live with the situation until
eventually I snapped and thought I'd try compiling it ... with the end
result (after some time in dependency hell :-) ) being where I am now.

I'm one of those people that hated Unity when it came out; hence the
jump to Mint. I still go back and try it now and then, but I still can't
get on with it. Regarding Gnome 3 ... It looks like I'll have to sit
back and wait for Ubuntu to embrace Gnome 3 properly and see where it
goes ... and struggle in the mean time.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

[Evolution] Mint 18 - Evo 3.18.5.2 issues

2016-10-23 Thread Michelle
Hi Folks,

I was on Mint 17 and have two partitions / and /home so when I upgrade
the OS using a completely fresh install, my data and preferences just
port.

However, after the upgrade to Mint 18 along with Evolution 3.18.5.2
I've got two problems...

1) Evolution isn't savng the "default" account after closing and re-
starting the app. It sets and appears to be happy when reset, but
possibly not, because of problem 2...

2) Auto-forwarded mail done by rule, is not sending but sitting in the
outbox. I have rules that filter incoming e-mail and important e-mails
get forwarded to my mobile phone. However, after the update, this isn't
working. The mails appear to be formatted correctly with the default
account, but they just sit there and don't send.

TIA for any help.

Many thanks. This solved the auto send issue.

The "forget default account" on restart, I still haven't made headway
with.

[Evolution] Importing CSV into evolution

2007-07-15 Thread Michelle Murrain
Hi,

I'm migrating from a Mac OS X desktop to Linux, and I want to get my
contacts into Evolution. I've exported a CSV from Apple's addressbook
(using a third party tool - addressbook doesn't export natively
.)

I first tried exporting using that tool's "Outlook filter" - but that
csv didn't import into Evolution (using the Outlook file type) at all,
for some reason.

I tried various other things, all of which resulted in munged contacts.

Lastly, I exported a dummy record out of Mozilla thunderbird, and
rearragned the column order *exactly* using OO spreadsheet, then
imported that CSV into evolution using the mozilla file type - I *still*
got munged contacts.

Any suggestions for how to deal with this? Documentation on the
column/field order expected, or other ways to get around this problem
would be greatly appreciated.

Peace,
Michelle

[Evolution] spam filtering

2007-07-20 Thread Michelle Murrain
Hi all,

I've noticed that evolution basically doesn't filter spam on its own.
I've been diligently marking mail as junk, and asking evo to check for
junk, but it just doesn't.

1) Am I somehow missing something, or is there no baysean spam filter in
evolution at this point?

2) What solutions have people found to this (I'm getting pretty darned
tired of deleting hundreds of spam messages manually a day.)

Thanks.

Michelle

PS. I solved the contacts import problem, eventually.

I don't have spamassassin installed - I'm simply using Evolution
(version 2.10.1 - Ubuntu Fiesty) as a pop client.

Are you saying that I'd have to set up spamassassin on my laptop to
filter the spam before it gets to evo? That certainly is a possible
solution, but it would be a drag.

[Evolution] PDA Sync

2007-08-03 Thread Michelle Murrain
Hi all,

I'm not sure if this question is appropriate for this list, or for a
gnome-pilot forum, but I figured I'd start here.

I've been using Evolution for a while, and have muliple calendars, to do
lists, etc. It appears that gnome-pilot will only allow you to choose
*one* of these to sync. Am I correct in this? Is there a workaround, or
a better syncing mechanism? I'd rather not put all of my stuff in one
category, and that seems beside the point anyway, since palm (the pda
I'm using) allows multiple categories.

Thanks!

[Evolution] messages disappearing into thin air!

2007-08-06 Thread Michelle Murrain
Hi All,

I was converting my account from POP to Imap, and the first part of that
process was to move messages from my inbox "On This Computer" to my imap
inbox. (I've done this same thing tons of times on other mail clients)
So I selected them, and moved them, and they disappeared. Completely.
Poof. They are gone from my inbox, and never showed up on the server!
(they don't show up when I show deleted messages)

What happened to them, and can I recover them? Help!

I'm running Evo 2.10.1 on Ubuntu Feisty.

[Evolution] messages disappearing, redux

2007-08-06 Thread Michelle Murrain
Hi,

I was a little wrong. It turns out, I found them when I unhid deleted messages.
(I had so many, they were hard to spot.) It's a good thing I don't expunge
deleted messages immediately!!!

However, the basic problem remains - it seems that evolution doesn't know how
to copy
messages from local folders to an imap server. I've experimented a couple of
times with non-essential
folders and messages. What am I missing, here?

[Evolution] Evolution not listening to quit

2019-06-02 Thread Michelle via evolution-list
Upgraded my version of Mint, which has...
Evolution 3.28.5-0ubuntu0.18.04.1

Prior to upgrading Linux Mint, my evolution backup script contained the
following...

#!/bin/sh
export DISPLAY=:0.0
rm /mnt/tank/users/michelle/backup/mail/5.tar.gz
mv /mnt/tank/users/michelle/backup/mail/4.tar.gz
/mnt/tank/users/michelle/backup/mail/5.tar.gz
mv /mnt/tank/users/michelle/backup/mail/3.tar.gz
/mnt/tank/users/michelle/backup/mail/4.tar.gz
mv /mnt/tank/users/michelle/backup/mail/2.tar.gz
/mnt/tank/users/michelle/backup/mail/3.tar.gz
mv /mnt/tank/users/michelle/backup/mail/1.tar.gz
/mnt/tank/users/michelle/backup/mail/2.tar.gz
sleep 5
cd ~
/usr/lib/evolution/evolution-backup --restart --backup
/mnt/tank/users/michelle/backup/mail/1.tar.gz

It is set to run three times a week and needed the export command to
get the shutdown to occur.

However, on those occasions I am now waking up after the overnight
backup, to find two copies of Evolution running. With or without the
display export.

The results form the script are as follows...

michelle@main-desktop:~$ ./evo-backup.sh
evolution-backup-Message: 09:05:55.487: evolution --quit
evolution-backup-Message: 09:05:55.886: rm
/home/michelle/.local/share/evolution/.running
rm: cannot remove '/home/michelle/.local/share/evolution/.running': No
such file or directory
evolution-backup-Message: 09:05:55.888: dconf dump
/org/gnome/evolution-data-server/
>/home/michelle/.local/share/evolution/backup-restore-dconf-eds.ini
evolution-backup-Message: 09:05:55.892: dconf dump
/org/gnome/evolution/ >/home/michelle/.local/share/evolution/backup-
restore-dconf-evo.ini
evolution-backup-Message: 09:05:55.908: cd /home/michelle && tar chf -
.local/share/evolution .config/evolution evolution.dir | gzip >
'/mnt/tank/users/michelle/backup/mail/1.tar.gz'
tar: .local/share/evolution: file changed as we read it
evolution-backup-Message: 09:08:07.003: rm /home/michelle/evolution.dir

So evolution-backup is reporting the "quit" to evolution, but it
doesn't appear to be listening. Also, there never appears to be a
.running file in .local so I'm not sure what's happening.

I've tried dropping to a command prompt and just issuing...
evolution --quit

... but it doesn't respond and stays running.

Any advice please?

Michelle.

Re: [Evolution] Evolution not listening to quit

2019-06-02 Thread Michelle via evolution-list
Thank you all.

Initially, I was using the --restart option when calling evolution-
backup so I would have assumed that it would have its own internal
timing on this. I'll try issuing the evolution --quit command from a
terminal window and give evolution some time, and see what it does, as
per Ralf's suggestion.

Andre's explanation of some distributions disabling behaviour seems the
most likely, especially as the people behind the Mint distribution seem
to be cautious about the versions they bundle.

If all else fails, I'll use Michael's code.

Many thanks for the help.

Michelle.

Yes, I use the --restart option on purpose.

The usage of Evolution in my instance, is also to field e-mails.
Important senders are forwarded by Evolution, to another e-mail account
that is picked up by my mobile phone. So Evolution is usually running
24/7. As a result, the mobile phone only goes "ping" on my hip when
something really important has arrived. As opposed to when it was
directly connected to the in-box and was pinging with every piece of
trash that came through.

I thus use Evolution's rules and forwarding very heavily.

I don't use IMAP because I keep an extensive e-mail history and some
attachments are large; (going back to 2003) so I keep everything local,
and local backups also. That way, I don't get an irate service provider
:-) ... and yes, I accept the loss that inevitably happens
occasionally. Nothing is perfect.

I thus use Pop accounts and Evolution checks about 10 e-mail accounts,
every 10 minutes, so a simple file copy/tar could readily catch
evolution in mid-check.

Some years ago, I was also going to Europe for a few weeks and tried to
copy the files to a laptop and run Evolution from there. It failed, and
I had to run an evolution-backup from the PC, and then import the
backup on the laptop (doing the reverse when I got home) ... and I've
been using evolution-backup ever since.

Hence I rely on evolution-backup rather than a straightforward file
copy. It's neater to quiesce evolution, back it up and then start again
cleanly.

I did alter the script to ask evolution to quit myself (rather than
relying on evolution-backup to do it) and then wait 30 seconds, and if
evolution hadn't quit, then issue a kill. Then wait another few seconds
and then run evolution-backup with the --restart.

Something inside me believe it's more dangerous to have multiple copies
of evolution running, than it is to resort to killing the process.

Michelle.

(Apologies if I've sent this twice to the list)

I've just upgraded Mint to 20 and Evolution is now 3.36.3-0ubuntu1

However, I was using /usr/lib/evolution/evolution-backup to perform an
automatic backup of my e-mail (plus, filter rules, account settings.
etc., not just the e-mails themselves) twice a week (more regularly
than my whole home folder) ... and it seems to have gone.

What's the replacement please, how do I get it back or is it just a
case of waiting for catch-up?

Re: [Evolution] Evolution-backup gone after Mint upgrade to 20

2020-07-28 Thread Michelle via evolution-list
Thank you all for the input.

Libevolution is present at version 3.36.3-0ubuntu1 but evolution-backup
is not present in /usr/lib/evolution. I have tried removal and
reinstall of that package.

I can also confirm that running backup via the menu works.

My main automatic client backup takes a bit of time, hence I use
evolution-backup as a means of, "in between," backup that I can run
more frequently. It's used as an addition, rather than a replacement.

Re: [Evolution] Evolution-backup gone after Mint upgrade to 20

2020-07-28 Thread Michelle via evolution-list
Well, that was strange.

evolution-backup was previously at - /usr/lib/evolution - which was
what is in my backup script and was working fine before the update to
Mint 20.

After checking, I found it at /usr/libexec/evolution

I went to test it and attempted to start the test by shutting down
evolution with... evolution --quit
... but it told me that evolution wasn't installed, even though it was
up and running at the time.

So... after installing evolution, I'm going to send this e-mail to the
list, then shut down the evolution that's running, attempt to start it
again, and see what I get.
