Re: [Evolution] Migrating data from Evolution 2.28 to 3.6
All: I would like to do it the other way around. I was using Evolution on an Xubuntu 12 and have now returned to Ubuntu 10.04. Is there any way to get the Evolution 3.x data back to Evolution 2.x? I'd suggest transferring your data to some 3rd party IMAP/CalDAV/CardDAV service, be that Google or your own locally installed servers. Then you can transfer the data back to Evolution 2.x or any client really (or you could just leave the data on the server permanently and not be chained to a particular client). Untar the backup file to some temporary location. Open Evo, create a new account of type mbox spool directory and point it at the location of the mbox files you have just untar'd. You will see all your mail folders in the left hand pane. Copy and paste to your hearts content to get your mail where you want it. Hi, I'm afraid the main issue is the evolution-source-registry process, its Reload method. See [1]. I didn't try this myself, but consider this: when the backup will start restoring your data, which I suppose takes several seconds, kill the evolution-source-registry process. Then when it's over, run the registry on console. In that time you should see your accounts being recreated/migrated from GConf. Make sure you will have no ~/.cache/evolution, ~/.config/evolution, ~/.local/share/evolution in your setup, thus the files will be recreated the same way as they are in the backup. (I suppose you have no new data stored there yet.) The best if you can avoid running evolution processes during the restore, which is an external application anyway, named evolution-backup, which resides in /usr/libexec/evolution/3.6/. You may kill all other evolution processes before running it ('ps ax | grep evolution' should return only one line, the grep command). Then just invoke restore from a terminal: $ evolution-backup --gui --restore backup.tar.gz Hope it helps, Milan [1] https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680201 ___ evolution-list mailing list evolution-list@gnome.org To change your list options or unsubscribe, visit ... https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list

As always, the easiest way to migrate data is to simply log into a GNOME desktop session if you're using GNOME, or else start the newer version of Evolution. Your data will be migrated automatically. In version 2.28, all files were located under $HOME/.evolution. The user manual lists the current data locations: http://library.gnome.org/users/evolution/stable/data-storage.html.en Hope this helps, Matthew Barnes ___ evolution-list mailing list evolution-list@gnome.org To change your list options or unsubscribe, visit ... https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list
Re: [Evolution] Migrating data from Evolution 2.28 to 3.6
Hi Andre: The conversion does not work. I attempt the restore and the too studies the file for a while before asking if I want to restore the backup. I indicate yes. It then proceeds to convert the file. I then end up with an an evolution session that is completely reset and asks me if I want to restore session. I have also attempted to copy the .evolution folder to the new machine and start evolution 3.6 on the new machine. It does not see the contents of the .evolution/mail/local/* folders What I really want to to be able to move my 2.28 files to the newer evolution 3.6 environment. I would ok doing single folder/.sdb imports into evolution 3.6. Thoughts? Re: [Evolution] Migrating data from Evolution 2.28 to 3.6
Greetings, I am not a regular on this evolution email list but I had a problem much like yours. If you have access to the archives for this list I sent an email describing my procedure that I used on 8/7/2012. I was migrating from a Fedora system with evolution 2.24.5 to another machine using Fedora 17 evolution 3.4.3. My problem was I was doing a sort merge on mail at the same time. But I think it would work for migration as well. I have been told that if you just leave the data as is and start the new version it will convert. I don't have any real reason to believe it. But I did around that time make it work for me. From a machine which appeared to be dying a hardware related death to a new machine. Let me know if I can help.
