As of v5.6 DavMail does *not* support IMAP subscribe/unsubscribe.

OK, but the principle is the same. The IMAP folder subscriptions are
held on the server. In this case the "server" is DavMail.

I haven't used DavMail for a long time, but I seem to remember that
when I did use it, it didn't support subscribe/unsubscribe. Perhaps it
would be good to turn on logging for DavMail to see what it's doing.
But I don't think this is an Evolution issue.

Well in my case it’s not a Gmail account, it’s DavMail’s imap server. I
manually unsubscribed from the folders I was not interested in and they
re-appeared a few hours later.

That's exactly right. I've always done this and have had no problems
with it.

Note also that as messages can have multiple labels in Gmail, IMAP will
show these as multiple copies in different folders, some of which may
be subscribed and some not. This doesn't seem to cause any issues as
far as I can tell.

I suspect it's some oddity with Gmail.

The IMAP folder subscription list is kept on the server not locally
(although there is probably a cache of the list locally). Gmail is not
really designed for use with IMAP, hence Google's implementation seems
to be a series of workarounds to try and make it look like it works.
Specifically, in Gmail the concept of a "folder" doesn't exist, but
they use "labels" as an analogue of folders. This largely works.

However, sometimes the interaction between "folders" and "labels" can
be a bit odd. Sometimes the Gmail version of folders doesn't work like
folders in other IMAP implementations.

So, you need to go into Gmail settings on the web (not the Evolution
one) and select "Labels" (Cog -> All Settings -> Labels). In there you
will see a setting against each label name of "Show in IMAP".
Enable/Disable as desired.

I’m having the same issue, but folders keep re-appearing even after
enabling that option (Evolution 3.40.4). Could there be another option
interfering with that one?

Apparently for some cases it's possible: I unsubscribed from my
Googlemail trash folder, deleted an email in Gmail and could find it in
the Gmail trash folder (via website). I guess the email service does
that by itself in the background. For the Sent folder I couldn't make
it happen.

Hi,
I did not say to use On This Computer. My main point is you cannot hide
any folder and still use it in the background, like with the Sent
folder you mentioned. When Evolution is supposed to add messages to
that folder, it also shows that folder in the folder listing.

Personally, I don't subscribe to the spam folder. If I need to check
it, I use the Gmail web interface, but in practice I never check it
unless there's a real chance of having missed something. That way I
don't have it cluttering up local space or having Evo check it all the
time.

It sounds perfectly fine to me to have e.g. a Junk folder that piles up
with spam mail in the background and that I only access every once in 3
months if I suspect it to contain a not-junk-mail. Similarly with the
Sent folder (check every 2 months whether I actually did attach that
file). :) And I find it disorganizes my mails if I assign those folders
to “on this computer” because then they are only on the computer,
right? And not in the IMAP server folder.

Sorry, I'm not sure whether I understood. You mean to create a folder
(“on this computer”) and copy the inbox emails into it by a filter, and
collapse the account where the email comes from (making the panel less
cluttered)?

Hi,
yeah, hiding folders from the UI, piling messages in them in the
background, but not be able to access them doesn't feel like a good
thing. You might want to check what the folder contains, sometimes.

You can try to create a search folder, using Match-All, only for the
folder you are interested in, then collapse the account and enter this
search folder, instead of the account's Inbox.

I tried that and it seems to maintain the unsubscribed folders hidden.
However, apparently I cannot − this probably only makes sense − be
unsubscribed from a folder and simultaneously store messages in it.
Because when I unsubscribe from a folder it will automatically switch
the default folder to “on this computer/folder”.

Meaning there seems to be no way to just “hide” folders − I must
unsubscribe from them.

I experience this also, but I attributed it to something on the mail

[Evolution] Unsubscribed folders reappear

2021-09-02 Thread Lucas Eichhorn via evolution-list
Hi,

I'm using version 3.36.5-0ubuntu1.

So I'm looking for a way to make the folder panel less cluttered.
Because I practically only use the “inbox” folder of each account and
practically never the others. In TB there is a way to “star” folders
and only show them, making the panel significantly less full of unused
folders. Here I didn't find that, however I found the feature “manage
subscriptions” per account. So I unsubscribed all the other folders and
they disappeared − good. However on the next day, or today even on the
same day they reappear. What am I doing wrong?

Also: Sometimes I have two folders e.g. “trash”, one with the trash
icon, the other with a normal folder icon. How can I reassign the trash
icon to the trash folder?

Thanks so much for your support! Best
