Re: [Evolution] Evolution Mail stopped working

2020-12-21 Thread Peter Franzek via evolution-list
Hello Sorin,

I use Evolution with my work's Office365 on Ubuntu 20.4.1 with all of
the lattest updates. I have verified that it is still working.

I did have an issue with the serrver certificate on December 18th.
Evolution complained that the certificate signing authority was
unknown, but the date on the cert was still good. The error went away
after accepting the cert temporarily. I suspect that was to do with
corporate maintenance that occurs weekly around that time more than any
issue with Evolution.

I am sorry that I can not offer anything else other than our
installation is still working. I agree with your comments concerning
calendars and webmail.

Best regards,
Peter

See https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/Debugging how to provide
debug output. For future reference, please include Evo version info.

The IT-dept got back to me just now, and let me know that they've as a
temporary workaround turned of MFA for my mail account - Evolution now works
again.

The way I think is that since Evolution is the only mail client with proper
enterprise capabilities, it'd probably be of interest to many to get it
working with the highest security settings available as seen on Outlook at
Office365.

I'm kinda wondering if there's any work being done on getting Evolution to
work with Microsoft's modified variant of OAuth2, as used by Office365
online, as it seems it currently dosn't?

What is the list's thoughts on this?

Evolution works fine with Office365 and MFA, I have it set up on
multiple machines. What sort of MFA are you using - I know hardware
keys don't work on Linux, but the Microsoft Authenticator app is
sufficient.

We have recently discovered that initial account configuration needs to use
basic auth mode,
once you are done you can switch to MFA. This is not obvious for users.

Interesting. So you can't setup an O365 account with MFA turned on in
Evolution? Is there a bug filed against that? (Because it is surely a
bug somewhere along the line.)

I'm interested in this because my organisation is big and lumbers along
- trying to get them to do fine-tuning changes such as that for
individuals is almost impossible. Having some bug reference to throw at
them will help.

No bug, I think I read on some Evolution/GNOME www page that that is how it
works w.r.t EWS/MFA

Really?
I don't even get that far to be able to use the MS Authenticator.

Oh!

I've only used Basic or NTLM authentication previously when I was
reconfigured to use MFA and Evolution stopped working for me.

Shouldn't it have worked for me with MFA then?

Is there any guide or some such I could forward or point to the mail admins
to get MFA working with Office365 and MFA?

Same here!

@Joakim; you wouldn't have that web page available bookmarked?
Thanks.

Hi,
once you choose "OAuth2 (Office365)" Authentication Type in the Mail
account configuration you see additional values to be filled to make it
work. That also involves a clickable "Help..." link above those new
values. When you click it, it opens the following web page in your
browser:

Yupp, the application and tenant-IDs etc?
Those are something the mail admins won't disclose.
Supposedly they are secret and also requires me to login to the Azure AD
Manager.

I feel OAuth2 is rather cumbersome with Evolution, unfortunately. It seems
to require high-leveled admin-permissions and special consideration from the
mail admins, something that end-users like me won't get at our university.

Hi,
right, all those things. The page offers some defaults, you can try
them (if you are lucky, the Application ID from there will work; if
not, you can ask the admins to allow it). In fact, the admins do not
want to "expose" anything, they only need to create (or allow the
existing) an application as is described on that page and give you the
Application ID. Everything is described on that page. Creating their
own application ID gives them full control on the data being used by
the application, by providing their own Application ID.

> I feel OAuth2 is rather cumbersome with Evolution, unfortunately.

If it's not clear from the Wiki page, the cumbersomeness is caused by
the Exchange settings, not by the application (Evolution) here. They
make it rather complicated to setup for the EWS protocol. I just want
to be fair.

I have tried to get that access earlier at a few occasions as well as
answers on what the tenant-ID is, but to no avail.
From time to time, I get the feeling that "non-standard" mailers like
Evolution Mail gets across as "dangerous" by the presumably Windows-centric
mail admins at the central IT-dep't... :-/

Will try again. Thanks for the confirmation though.

You are right of course. I didn't quite think that through all the way.

So now my company turned off Basic auth for normal users and only allow O365
OAuth.
This mean we cannot create new Evo accounts, I cannot recall where I read that
this is
a limitation. Would be great if Milan could refresh me :)

Also, I guess this will be fairly frequent going forward, is there a solution

Hi,
the solution is there for years, use OAuth2. It used to be hidden for
non-office365.com addresses (in the Host URL), but it's shown always
now (since evo-ews 3.38.1, while the current version is 3.38.3). Once
you select the OAuth2 some "Help..." links are shown there. They point
to https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/EWS/OAuth2

You need a cooperation from your admins, unfortunately. Nothing evo-ews
can do about it, it's the way Microsoft made it for the EWS protocol.

We are using OAuth2 and a 3.38.x Evolution. I opened the page you quoted below
and I tried to find the mentioned App IDs (GNOME Evolution/GNOME Evolution EWS)
in https://portal.azure.com under Enterprise Application but no GNOME app could
be found. Strange ...

We created our own Application/Tenant long agon and I compared it with the
stuff you have written under Find the Tenant ID and
as far as I can tell we have those configs already.

In general OAuth2 works but not when a new user configures his Evo account for
the first time, then Basic needs to be used.
Once through account registration one can just swap to OAuth2.

I have this memory that you once told me that there was a limitation (in EWS?)
that preveted OAuth2 at the initial
account registration but I far from sure.

Hi,
I see, the Basic is needed for the autodiscovery, aka "Fetch URL", if
I'm not mistaken. I guess it might use that, instead of the OAuth2, on
its own.

My problem may have been the default Host URL(

Is there some config/#define I can change so Host URL defaults to

OAuth2 get me this error at Fetch URL:

The reported error was “8 Data source “joakim.tjernl...@infinera.com” does not

Hi,
the "default" Host URL is only a suggestion, it's (I'd say 'always',
but let's use 'almost always') changed by the user. The important part
is that it gives an idea what it should look like. The Host URL used to
be empty, which made the users (including me) just lost.

Right, I tried it here and I see that too. Using the Basic auth is not
the way to go.

Sure, but for my users it would be easier if there were one less thing to

Hi,
right, understood. If you have access to those machines and they can
access a common place, then you can setup an autoconfigure for the
users, thus they just run Evolution (-data-server processes) and
they'll have preconfigured anything you want, including the EWS
account. This message list archive contains some threads related to it.
I did plan to write a Wiki for that, but I did not get to it yet. Maybe
during the next hard code freeze, if I'll not forget it.

> Is this something you can fix? Using Evo onwards will be hard

The bug is still opened, but I did not figure out how to deal with it
due to the current eds design limitations (how I'd call it) yet.

By the way, you do not need to click the "Fetch URL" button at all, it
only prefills the OAB URL, which stands for "Offline Address Book". The
evo-ews can work without it too, though there are couple advantages
when it is known and the offline GAL (Global Address List) is enabled.
