Re: $$Excel-Macros$$ Need your help

2012-08-13 Thread Paul Schreiner
I have a "solution" that I use.
I place most of the files in network locations, so they are backed up regularly.
Where necessary, SHORCUTS are created to utilize these files.
It has some limitations, since I could not use the Group Policy approach (thank
you I.T.)

It consists of (4) files.
---
File #1) I have a simple text file called pctime.txt that is in the format:
Day|  Date    | IN    |   OUT
Mon|01/02/2012|||Holiday
Tue|01/03/2012|07:10:00 AM|04:20:00 PM
Wed|01/04/2012|07:10:00 AM|04:05:00 PM
Thu|01/05/2012|07:00:00 AM|04:05:00 PM
Fri|01/06/2012|07:10:00 AM|03:35:00 PM

It is located in a Network Folder, but can be placed anywhere.
---
File #2) is the "Login" file:  LogIn.vbs
A shortcut to this file is placed in the Startup Folder so that it executes
whenever Windows STARTS.
(note, this does NOT run if the computer is "locked" and a password is used to
unlock the computer)
This file makes an entry into File #1 unless a previous exists.
---
File #3) is the "Logout" file.
After making the appropriate entry in File #1, this file CURRENTLY opens a web
page used for updating a company time sheet.
But since my computer must remain logged in so that nightly jobs can run, it no
longer loggs off.
However, I'm sure I have an older version that forces a reboot.
---
File #4) is an excel Workbook.
This workbook contains all weeks for the current year.
Setting the first workday of the year automatically resets the dates for the
rest of the year.
When opened, this workbook opens File #1 and updates the start/stop time for
missing cells.
---

If you feel that this technique is suitable, I will "clean up" my files and
send
them to you.

$$Excel-Macros$$ Re: want to show always last date in date range in chart X-Axis

2012-08-13 Thread Kishan Reddy, K
One way is to display every value on x axis. But this will work only for
limited values on x.
Means your date range is below 20 or 30.

Here you have to format the x axis. Select the scale tab. set the minor
unit = 1 and major unit = 1.

Another way is to display the max date above or some where around the graph
for information purpose or add a suitable title reflecting the from date
and to date.

This is the way I found a solution, when i faced the same problem.

Re: $$Excel-Macros$$ Need your help

2012-08-13 Thread Paul Schreiner
I've worked through quite a bit of this.
Spent MANY hours trying to work it out.

There's LOTS of things to consider.

#1.. is this for personal use, or for many people in an office?
1a)  If it is an office, is there an I.T. department that controls PC and
Windows configuration?

Windows has a "Group Policy" that allows you to create login/logouts scripts
for
Windows.
Since my work environment has an I.T. Department that controlls our system
configurations,
I could not utilize this method. (They locked out the Group Policy Editor)

Instead, I created a login and logout VB script that writes to a text file.
It looks for today's date.
If found, it compares the current time to the time record.
If for some reason, the current time is EARLIER than the login time recorded,
it
overwrites it.
(this should only happen if someone manually modified the file)

This vbscript is placed in the Startup folder and runs when windows Starts.

logOUT is a bit of a problem.

I created a vbscript to use to log out.
It records the time, then exits windows.

However, the user MUST use this script to log out.
If windows is exited normally, (or abnormally for that matter)...
basically.. if any other method is used to log out, the time is not recorded.

For Personal use, I am very disciplined about using this.
But for widespread use? I wouldn't trust it.

Another security issue is that the file it updates is a simple text file.
Therefore, a user COULD modify the values...
(i.e.: I was 10 minutes late getting to my desk because my boss was talking to
me at the coffee machine on the way in.
So, I wanted to "back out" the time so it wouldn't show up as "late"...)
I've CONSIDERED trying to open the file as "Binary".
I've done this from Excel before, but not from VBScript.

My excel file then updates from this log file when opened.

$$Excel-Macros$$ Re: What is the future of VBA?

2012-08-13 Thread Kishan Reddy, K
Comparing to Programming languages, application packages do have a long
life.

Still, why do you worry, about the future of VBA.

Softwares are born, evolve & become obsolete over a period of time.

But software concepts, which have deep foundation in physical sciences &
mathematics do have a long life.

While software professionals spend their time and resources to learn
softwares,
but will not try to understand the concepts & fundamentals.

The persons who (at least try to) understands the concepts & fundamentals
of various softwares
will not bother about the life span of a particular software.

Also, You can't project the life span of a software, just like you can't
assess the life span of your own life.

So, enjoy the fun of softwares and also the life.

2012-08-13 Thread Ashish Pradhan

Hi

Very Limited Knowledge of Excel as compared to most others. I use Excel
2003. What I did was to add another column with the formula
=text(C2,"") C2 is the date column. (I converted 05.04.2012 into a
proper date format first).

The above formula gave me a month like "April". Then used the regular
"Filter" to sort on the additional column created -- Month.

Most likely a longer method of solving the issue. CoRe's solution works
great. (And without the need to add any column).

Thanks

we are sorting it customer wise and removing the place by using

As approximately we are having 98 customers and it is very
