Detective work is a prerequisite to the job of IT support. Even more so
in the world of online support. When you are asked Questions with only
2% of the relevant information needed to answer properly. Chirs being an
MVP has defonate proven ability there.

Also you would make a great detective your synopsis below is exactly
correct. Now I made the changes and I get a 550 Relaying is prohibited
error. I thought that removing the domain defined as inbound disallowed
any relaying. Is that correct? If not how do you enable relaying, is
that the fix?

Ok... Then without knowing which way the traffic is flowing currently
in relation to the original NDR and its munged domains. I'm assuming
 that
these
Exchange servers are in separate orgs or that there's no directory
replication going on... Again based on the original munged NDR.

If the customer's domain is domain.com, it should NOT be defined as
inbound
on the IMS, it should be defined as relay and then on the connections
tab custom routing should be configured. As for outbound mail from the
internal
exchange server being routed out through the server outside the
firewall...
That's easy, just treat the internal server as if it were a normal
client and enable routing as needed.

Still, enabling the IIS SMTP service seems so much easier and more
secure. It's not always just about giving the customer what they want,

but giving the customer what they need.

 The definitive answer:
Test it yourself. You have knowledgeable people telling you not to do it,
and you don't believe them. Pretend you're a professional and test it in
 a lab environment.

I've never stuffed my cat into a coffee mug, but I've got strong
indications from previous observations of both coffee mugs and cats that
tell me he wouldn't react well. I'm thinking none of the other 4,000
people on this list have stuffed a cat into a coffee mug, and yet pretty
darned near ALL of them have an idea that it wouldn't be good, without
being able to quantify the EXACT point of systemic breakdown.

If you don't believe me, stuff your own damn cat into your own damn coffee
 mug.

  Hello.

  An optional answer:
Application that requires mapi client on the server.
For example: FAX application, anti virus that doesn't work via AVAPI,
BLB
  backup solution,
and others, that I may not say in public ;-)

Anyway, among many replies I got, none of them was an answer to my
question.

How to break Exchange in the Lab [Was: NTBackup]

2001-10-27 Thread Sanborn, John

Thanks to everyone and MSKB[1], I now have backups that I KNOW are good.

Next step now, is to learn how to fix Exchange. I know there are a few
million ways to break Exchange, but what would be the best for learning the
repair tools in a lab environment?

The hardware stuff 'should' be straight-forward. Break it - ID it - Repair/
Replace/ Restore - Reboot.
The software and DB corruption would need to be more careful to avoid
getting into a 'Restore is only option' situation.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

2001-10-27 Thread Sanborn, John

Hmmm ... Had not run across that yet. And here I thought I'd been checking
out all the resources from the list. :-(

Cool stuff in there and in the directory above it:
http://www.microsoft.com/Exchange/techinfo/administration/55/

It maybe in there [only took a quick peek], but what I want to do is find
ways to realistically break a lab machine that would mimic real-life
problems that require the use of the tools in the whitepages and techniques.

Regarding #2, if you want to carry on a personal conversation with someone,
then you don't post it to a discussion list. Not every participant herein
can watch the list in real time and respond to personal queries. The nature

offer something.

Now, as to Mr. Ely's suggestions, you should reconsider your hostility to

Again: User is currently out of office and not poping email. Therefore all
new emails are going to sit on the server. They'll stay there until she/he
opens up Outlook and pops them. Then they'll be on the .pst file. The point
is email is being delivered, while the sender is receiving a bounced message
to the contrary, back from System Administrator.

It's being delivered to the .pst file because I don't have room on the
server for more than 600 MB of email! Yes I know all about .pst files being
not the ideal place to store email, but I can't bring down the server right

I don't know how you managed that since Exchange supports only a single KMS

We have two KMS servers in our ORG. Can users from sites with different
KMS servers exchange encrypted e-mail? How can you configure the KMS
servers to do this? Using Exchange 5.5 sp4, Key management server, no
certificate services used, matched the encryption types between the KMS
servers.

Thank you!

RE: IMC and relaying

2001-10-27 Thread Ed Crowley

May I suggest that you use the IIS Service that comes with the NT Option
Pack to do relaying in the firewall. It's far simpler than Exchange and
will do just what you want. If you're running MS Proxy, you can even run it
on the same server. If you go down this path, then search TechNet for
8bitmime and implement the registry setting so it works right with
Exchange.

It's a security issue, the relay system will be outside a firewall the
mailbox server will be inside.

Anyway, among many replies I got, none of them was an answer to my
question.

 Hi all,

New to the group however I've been watching for some time.

This is in no way a flame posting, however I seek information regarding
the clustering of Exchange 2000 servers.

Could anyone point out any good reference points - be they web or book?
I've searched high and low on various search engines but just get sites
full of mumbo-jumbo that is not relevant.

RE: MAPI Client for Windows 2000

2001-10-27 Thread Jennifer Baker

I tested stuffing a cat into a coffee mug. I had to use 18 coffee mugs and
cut the cat up into 126 pieces. It worked, but it was bad. Maybe if I used
the big Starbucks coffee mugs I would have had better results.

Hope this helps.

Anyway, among many replies I got, none of them was an answer to my
question.

RE: Exchange clustering

There is that wonderful built in error in the core processor of Exchange
in the active active cluster.

It is just a waste of hardware. Getting a separate second server would
be much better.
