Subject: Exchange 2000 internet eMail archiving

Hi

My customer havee very special journaling needs.

They need eMail going outside the organisation and coming from people
outside the organisation to be archived for auditing purpose.

The Ex2K journaling is not usefull because different Manager need to
monitor different employee eMail. I mean Manager A must be able to
monitor eMail from user 1-2-3-4 and Manager B user 5-6-7-8 but each
manager must not be able to monitor incoming and outoing email for other
group

I think that a gateway product archiving that in a database would be the
best. With the databse we will be able to tell who has access to what
eMail (From : [EMAIL PROTECTED] ) etc

Does someone know a good gateway archiving software ?

JF

I think those graphics would look like an ASCII representation of a binary
file.

Some days CJ's graphic beard monogram is more apropos than others.

CJ, since you're so good at this stuff, you should teach some classes on
technology and history someplace. I'm sure the kids would become heroes if
they too could lean to manipulate poorly encrypted, delimited data files
using both raster and vector graphics tools. Maybe they could grow up to
become NASA analysts working on interpreting Martian meteorological data for
hidden faces and other virtual artifacts. You could develop a whole new
field of pseudo-science, leading to a cult following that memorializes your
work in a religion based on visionetics. It could even have a sub-cult that
is the science fantasy literature branch, complete with its own web sites
and self published stories.

You could be onto something here . . .

You can also open PST files with photoshop, but you have to
rename them with a .PSD extension. Once you do that, you can
manipulate the files with the graphics tools in that program.
I just love applying a mosaic filter to my Sent Items folder...

Does anyone know of a utility that will allow a user to view

Exchange 2000 Monitors

2002-10-17 Thread Andrew Pike
HI All,

I've searched through the achieves and TechNet but couldn't find anything on this.

On two Exchange servers (eight in total) the monitoring tab under the properties of an
Exchange server gives an Exchange System Manager error. An error occurred during a
call to Windows Management Instrumentation ID No:80041001 Exchange System Manager.
This also happens for the two servers under Status. The six other servers are fine
and notifications work.

There are two Winmgmt error in the application log when the server is rebooted:

Both Event 39

WMI ADAP was unable to create the object Win32_PerfRawData_MSExchangeIS_MSExchangeIS
for Performance Library MSExchangeIS because property MailboxCacheHitRatePercentbase
already exists.

WMI ADAP was unable to create the object
Win32_PerfRawData_MSExchangeDSAccess_MSExchangeDSAccessCaches for Performance Library
MSExchangeDSAccess because property CacheHitsPerSec already exists

I've searched through the WMI logs, the only real error I can see is in the
wmiadap.log CNTRegistry::GetStr() failed: 2.

Has anybody seen this before ?

Cheers

Andrew

Yeah, I understand a timeout when the destination domain has
MX records but the remote server is not answering because it
may be temporarily down. But when the remote domain does not
even exist in DNS that should be a different story.

something to keep in mind when restoring:

After the restore, BEFORE you perform **anything** on the dbs, copy it
all out to another drive (or somewhere that you have space). That way,
if your procedures don't work the way you want them to you don't have to
go through a restore again to get another copy.

Sent Items saving as Draft

2002-10-17 Thread Stephens, Tara
We are running E2K SP2 and Outlook XP. I have a user who has rules set
to move messages directly to her PST (I know, I know...). When she
replies to the message in her PST, it sends the message, but puts it as
a draft in her Outbox. The people are actually receiving her messages,
but she's having to manually move the messages to her sent items - a
small price to pay for using a non-standard setup. Does anyone have any
ideas at all? Her draft time is set to 3 minutes and it's set for
drafts to go to the draft folder. It's set for sent items to save in
the Sent Items folder.

TIA

Once they leave your email server you have no control as to when the
recipient get the message. When you shut it down did you check to see the
amount of message in queue? When Exchange shuts down it waits for message to
be received before shutting down but not 100% on what happens to ones in the
send queue. Always good to look at those prior to shutting down services.

 Good Afternoon All,

Today our servers had to be shut down due to the
noreaster on the east coast, and we were down for about 3 1/2 hours. Our
dns
is hosted by our webhost which located in manhattan so we didnt lose any
messages today. So heres my problem, after we got power back to the
servers
we started to receive all the our messages. Then a user in my office told
me that his clients were receiving messages that were sent by him
yesterday.
We use exchange 5.5 sp4 with windows nt 4.0. If anyone has had this
problem
in the past can you please let me know why or how this could have
happened.

Hi

My customer havee very special journaling needs.

They need eMail going outside the organisation and coming from people
outside the organisation to be archived for auditing purpose.

The Ex2K journaling is not usefull because different Manager need to
monitor different employee eMail. I mean Manager A must be able to
monitor eMail from user 1-2-3-4 and Manager B user 5-6-7-8 but each
manager must not be able to monitor incoming and outoing email for
other group

I think that a gateway product archiving that in a database would be
the best. With the databse we will be able to tell who has access to
what eMail (From : [EMAIL PROTECTED] ) etc

Does someone know a good gateway archiving software ?

Yeah, I understand a timeout when the destination domain has
MX records but the remote server is not answering because it

MAPI Error when starting Exchange Admin on the Server

2002-10-17 Thread John Matteson
Good morning to you all:

I have had someone install Microsoft Office on one of the Exchange
server in my org. Predictably, it has broken Outlook and Exchange admin on
that server. The server still operates, but Exchange Admin no longer works
from the server console.

There was a fix posted a while back, something having to do with one
of the MAPI*.dll files.

Can anyone repost the fix? I've looked, but the way things have been
going recently, that fix probably when out with the last PF purge.

TIA.

In the glory days of Exchange 5.5 there was a reg hack one could do to limit
the total number of recipients in a message without having an adverse effect
on Distribution Lists being in the message. Now with Exchange 2000 and AD,
every recipient in a DL is counted towards the total recipient count. This
is quite troublesome when we have several large distribution lists. Is
there a workaround to this or is this something we have to live with?

RE: Sent Items saving as Draft

2002-10-17 Thread Andy David
Well, obviously not expected behavior eh? :)
I would think the major drawback of such a rule is that it is a client-side
rule.
I dont really have a good answer other than making sure she has Office SP-2
applied and short of that, perhaps recreating her Outlook profile...
Wouldnt it be easier for her to simply create a folder under her mailbox on
the exch server and auto-archive those messages periodically to a pst?

Subject: Sent Items saving as Draft

We are running E2K SP2 and Outlook XP. I have a user who has rules set
to move messages directly to her PST (I know, I know...). When she
replies to the message in her PST, it sends the message, but puts it as
a draft in her Outbox. The people are actually receiving her messages,
but she's having to manually move the messages to her sent items - a
small price to pay for using a non-standard setup. Does anyone have any
ideas at all? Her draft time is set to 3 minutes and it's set for
drafts to go to the draft folder. It's set for sent items to save in
the Sent Items folder.

TIA

Tara

Contact list problems

RE: MAPI Error when starting Exchange Admin on the Server

2002-10-17 Thread Allan Johnson
I think that is office installs a truncated mapi32.dll into winroot/system32
folder and renames the original to mapi32x.dll. The original mapi32.dll I
believe is 621K and the one that is installed is 128K. It would be simple
to verify and do a swap and see if it corrects the issue.

I can't drag up the appropriate Q# but I remember reading something about
it. I found it originally during Exmerge issues and the article referenced
an office install replacing the file.

Hope that helps.

Allan

Changing Mail Servers

2002-10-17 Thread Vincent Avallone
Thanks to all your help, my new Exchange 2000 email server is up and
running pretty smoothly so far.
When it is time to go live, what are your suggestion on how to change
the server name on my clients?
I thought there may be a registry entry that I can use regini with and
change it, but I haven't been able to find it yet.
There is the option of asking users to do it themselves.
I am trying to avoid visiting each user.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks

Bad Mail Addresses.

2002-10-17 Thread McCready, Robert
Exchange 5.5 SP4, NT 4.0 SP6a,

If an E-mail is sent into an organization with an invalid E-mail address,
does Exchange
automatically send a reply to the sender that says this address is not
valid? Can this reply be
modified (either the message or who receives the message)? Or, is this an
automatic process
that is sent to the originator of the message and the Exchange Admin? I
wasn't here when Exchange
was initially setup, but I receive messages every day saying E-mail can not
be delivered to such
and such. I'd like to find out if the message/recipients can be modified.

Thanks.

Thanks

RE: Bad Mail Addresses.

2002-10-17 Thread Durkee, Peter
Exchange automatically sends the NDR (non-delivery response) both to the sender and to
the designated admin mailbox. This message can't be modified, nor can the fact that a
copy goes to the original sender. The admin mailbox it goes to can be changed in the
Internet Mail tab of the IMC Properties page in Exchange Admin.

Thanks.

Thanks to all your help, my new Exchange 2000 email server is up and
running pretty smoothly so far.
When it is time to go live, what are your suggestion on how to change
the server name on my clients?
I thought there may be a registry entry that I can use regini with and
change it, but I haven't been able to find it yet.
There is the option of asking users to do it themselves.
I am trying to avoid visiting each user.

Any ideas would be helpful.

RE: Changing Mail Servers

2002-10-17 Thread Vincent Avallone
It's a pretty easy change.
I just need to point them to the server name.
I will then have to setup their archive folders and .ost.
So I may have to visit each user anyway.

No, I mean when you open the Contact itself. There's an e-mail address

I think Exchange is intuitive enough to change the servername automagically,
if you are talking about changing it in the profile for the User on their

The servername in the profile got changed on the fly. If I am way off the

Thanks to all your help, my new Exchange 2000 email server is up and running
pretty smoothly so far. When it is time to go live, what are your suggestion
on how to change the server name on my clients? I thought there may be a
registry entry that I can use regini with and change it, but I haven't been
able to find it yet. There is the option of asking users to do it
themselves. I am trying to avoid visiting each user.

Any ideas would be helpful.

something to keep in mind when restoring:

After the restore, BEFORE you perform **anything** on the
dbs, copy it all out to another drive (or somewhere that you
have space). That way, if your procedures don't work the way
you want them to you don't have to go through a restore again
 to get another copy.

My first thought. After you restored the IS to the LAB server
and tried to bring it up did you get some kind of error? If
so, what did you do next?

My second thought. If you restored the IS and then ran
isinteg - patch that is usually not good since you should
ONLY run it if you see an 1011 event in the log files. If
you don't see that event don't run isinteg.

Validation of migration concept

2002-10-17 Thread Soren Larsen
Hello

Having just been through an Exchange 5.5 - 2000 migration, I need to ask
a few questions.

It was chosen to create an new Exchange 2000 organization and not reuse
the old Exchange 5.5. I don't know the reasons for this design decision -
I just had to do the task.

The way I did it was to install the Exchange 2000 organization (1 server,
1 site), configure all the required options, mail enable the users, and
finally migrate the user mailboxes from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 with
the Migration Wizard.

Migration of the 15 GB mailboxes went smooth with the exception that
Migration Wizard forgot some items in about 10 mailboxes.

Now when the new Exchange system has gone into production we are
experiencing some very strange and pretty serious problems productivity
wise.

1. Users are experiencing problems in their Outlook 98 mail client (yes, I
know, not exactly latest technology). Everything from Outlook hanging for
minutes, to Outlook freezing totally. Lots of errors like Object not
found is given when opening items and using functionality in the Outlook
98 client. All users had new MAPI profiles created and the forms cache
emptied. Anybody on the list has suggestions to what I can do to debug
further on the problem?

2. Users can't reply to old messages migrated from the old 5.5 server. I
was told that Exchange 2000 would recalculate the old Distinguished Names
in the mail messages, but this has not happened, as the users are replying
to the old addresses from the 5.5 organization. Can I do anything to solve
this issue?

Are there any known issues in running Outlook 98 against an Exchange 2000
server that could cause my problem?

Thanks in advance.

Soren

Should the reverse DNS entry be configured on our server or from our

We currently do not have a R-DNS for the IP of our mail server (from

 Additional info:

 Ex 5.5 SP 4

Surprisingly(?), we haven't had any mail delivery problems yet...

something to keep in mind when restoring:

After the restore, BEFORE you perform **anything** on the
dbs, copy it all out to another drive (or somewhere that you
have space). That way, if your procedures don't work the way

Help needed on PAB and contacts?

2002-10-17 Thread Mitchell Mike
Good afternoon,

Outlook 98... exchange 5.5 sp3

How do you export your PAB into a contact folder?

How do you export your PAB into an excel spreadsheet?

Does an excel spreadsheet have to be in a certain format to import into a
Contacts folder?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think Exchange is intuitive enough to change the servername automagically,
if you are talking about changing it in the profile for the User on their
machines. At least Exchange 5.5 was intuitive enough to know that if I
moved Users from Server A to Server B, the User did not have to do anything.
The servername in the profile got changed on the fly. If I am way off the
actual topic, I apologize.

Hello

Having just been through an Exchange 5.5 - 2000 migration, I need to ask
a few questions.

It was chosen to create an new Exchange 2000 organization and not reuse
the old Exchange 5.5. I don't know the reasons for this design decision -
I just had to do the task.

The way I did it was to install the Exchange 2000 organization (1 server,

finally migrate the user mailboxes from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 with
the Migration Wizard.

Thanks in advance.

disappeared meetings.

2002-10-17 Thread Albert Charron
First of all, I'll give you my configuration:

- Exchange 2000 Server on a distant network
- Outlook 2000 clients using an offline configuration.

Now my wierd problem:

I have a user here who scheduled meetings for his team. He invited attendees to his
meeting (no problem with this). A few days later, he tried to modify his meeting, but
it wasn't in his calandar anymore, but it was still in his attendees calandars
(showing my user as the one who sent this meeting request).

Does anybody has an idea about what caused this meeting to disappear?

Is it possible that a glitch when my user synchronized his mailbox with the server
appended and deleted his meeting? Is there a way to get it back (without recreating
it because other users will get a lot of conflicts...).

Thanks again for your help!

RE: Validation of migration concept

2002-10-17 Thread Andrey Fyodorov
If you used the normal method of migration (keeping everything in the same exchange
Org), then people would be able to reply to old messages. This is because the Reply-to
is using the directory name of the recipient as it sees it in the old message.

You could probably use ADSI Edit and assign each user a LegacyExchangeDN field that
would match the style of the old Exchange 5.5 organization. Or you could prepare an
LDF file to import respective LegacyExchangeDN fields for each user and then import it
with LDIFDE.exe utility. Perhaps then peopel would be able to reply to old messages.

OWA 2000 login prompt

2002-10-17 Thread Edwards, Aaron
Hi,

I have an annoying problem with our front-end OWA 2000. Everytime a user
logs in and clicks on the folders view, it promps for authentication from
owa server name.domain name.com.

The only way to get past the login prompt is to either hit escape, which
gives you a Login failed or cancelled error, or enter the OWA server's
local administrator authentication. After you hit escape and ok, it works
just fine though.

I have this feeling it's a permissions problem, but I'm not sure on what. In
Internet Services Manager, I have basic authentication checked on the
Exchange virtual directory level and Anonymous Access (using the local
IUSR_Server Name user) at the website level.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Aaron

something to keep in mind when restoring:

First thought, your recovery server does not have the same
  Exchange SP
and/or hotfix level as your production . I also prefer
  restores fron
   online backups. Much easier.

   Subject: Isinted -patch fails

So I'm trying to restore an offline backup to a lab environment...
  Testing
out migration from 5.5 to 2k.

I backed-up the old exchange server (5.5 SP3) using ntbackup, and
  restored
it onto the lab one (5.5 SP3). When I tried to run isinted
  -patch, it
fails with JET_errFileAccessDenied. Event logs show an
  error 145 for
   ESE97, that
it could not access a logfile. I checked its existence and
  permissions,
   and
   everything appears Ok.

   Any help?

All boxes involved are Win2k SP3, and Exchange 5.5, SP3.

   TIA

RE: Fax Sr. on Exchange

2002-10-17 Thread Roger Seielstad
Is that still the case with Genifax, which appears to be the replacement for
Fax Sr?

We use it in conjunction with a third party app and it runs
 pretty well.
Every once in a while it brings my server to a crawl and a
 stop and start
of its services clears it up. I have to agree with John,
 don't rely on
their support and hope it works right out of the box.

We had two installations of Fax Sr. in two different sites, same
organization. One installation ran hands off, just fine, no
 problems.

The other took spoon feeding, braces, crutches and three
 helpers to walk.

Trying to get technical support from the manufacturer was a
 joke. Even calls
to the VP and President of the company went unanswered.

I would be interested if anybody has installed Fax Sr in an
 Exchange 5.5
environment. If they have had any issues with installation and/or
configuration of Fax Sr when running with Exchange.

  Thanks,
  Didy

Subject: Exchange 2000 and NTFS file system permissions

Hi everyone:

I have been looking around for a definitive recommendation on locking
down NTFS permissions on an Exchange 2000 server. Does anyone have any
recommendations or thoughts on this subject? Possible problems?

Thanks much,

Jim McBee
