Subject: EDU Migration Question

I'm preparing a design to migrate campus students from Sendmail to E2K. One
of the clients objectives is to achieve like functionality for the following
task:

To search for specific messages by subject and/or sender and delete them.
The scenario being that Faculty or Network staff has sent out notices over
some time period and students have been away for an extended period and not
checked their mail. These messages have accumulated and the Network staff
wants to remove these messages. Today this is performed on the Unix Host.

And yes, mailbox size warnings and limits will be implemented.

Can this same functionality be achieved on the Exchange Server without a 3rd
party tool? I don't believe Mailbox Manager is a solution since it is based
on age limits. My client does not want to delete unread messages older than
xx days arbitrarily.

So switching to Native mode will allow me to move users between admin

Once you get to Native Mode, you can consolidate any number of sites into
administrative groups. Proceed with your migration, then switch to native
mode and consolidate. That is the process.

To get there, you will probably want to install an E2K server into the
second site, move the mailboxes to that server, get rid of all your E55
servers, switch to native mode and then move the server to the first AG
and then blast the AG/site for your second site.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  I have the following scenario:
2 Exchange servers in one org but different sites that I need to migrate
to
Exchange 2000 into one single Admin Group.
I can move the first server into the first admin group without problems
but
how can I move the mailboxes of the 2nd site into the First Admin Group
instead of creating a new admin group? That doesn't seem to work.
I thought about using Exemerge, is there another way?

  regards
  Uso

RE: duplicate adress in contact

2002-11-19 Thread Tom Meunier
Make a mailbox on your system for one of the managers. It will be in
the GAL, of course. Now set forwarding on that mailbox to the guy(s) in
Dubai.

Better: Tell your moron users to add them in their own contacts list.

Best: Get the two morons in Dubai to have two mailboxes.

Unthinkably good: Invent a cure for micromanaging nincompoops.

Ed, we are not hosting their mailboxes in Pakistan. They have their own
mailboxes in Dubai. What I have done is, I have created contacts on my
server, so that my management can send mails using those addresses, but
the problem is that there is one email ID used by 2 guys in Dubai, which
obviously I can't add in my GAL, But my management over here is forcing
me to add them both, how can I do that. Please let me know if I am
unable to describe you.

Create a new mailbox with the shared ID, grant permissions so each
manager owns it and has Send As rights, and show each manager how to add
it as a second mailbox. Show them how to use the From: field to send
from that mailbox when they want to.

My two manager sharing one email ID in Dubai, now here I have created
two contacts with different names but same email address, and added in

the group called XYZ, but the problem is message bounce back NDR
duplicate addresses. I know this is normal but my management wants
that they both should exit in our GAL, How can I solve this; help in
 this regard is appreciated.

E-mail addresses must be unique between users!

You need to add the second manager as a different e-mail address, then
have exchange deliver the mail to BOTH mailboxes. (alternate recipient)

After upgrading the boxes to 2000 SP3 (including my recovery

recognize the any tapes from the other systems. I put the
tape in and I get use cleaning tape. Looked at drivers and

I don't know if it's related, but I remember some issue with Exchange

RE: Weird SMTP header problem

2002-11-19 Thread Ken Cornetet
To summarize my problem, my E2K mailbox server is stripping SMTP Received:
headers, and making up it's own. Last week when this happened, a reboot
cleared up the problem, but it came back (not been able to reboot again,
yet).

Ed, is this proof enough?

I've managed to distill the problem down to a simple set of steps.

1. Send email from my PC to the MSX 5.5 IMS server using blat. Here's the

We have four domains with a complete-trust model. Mailboxes have NT accounts
from any of these domains. No problems here...never had any issues sharing

Yes, maybe, especially if it is a mixed NT4.0 domain and AD setup. It will
work but certain functions will not work in Outlook, like sharing of
 calendars can be troublesome.

RE: Move Exch2k to a new server

2002-11-19 Thread Rob Hackney
What type of server is the advanced server (ie pdc/ member)? SBS is a
pdc so if you've set up the new server as that also, I don't think it's
possible.
You could put the 2 servers on different network segments and exmerge -
or exmerge and copy to backup tape.
You can use the csvde or ldifde to create the users/ mailboxes - plenty
of articles on technet about this
Upgrading to backoffice when you already have an advanced server there
is a bit of a waste of money (unless you are going to use it but the way
I read you it is going away)
I recently had to merge 2 domains - one on existing sbs2k and the other
on sbs4.5 Used exmerge, data to tape and import onto sbs2k - worked a
treat.

I am not an SBS expert but I don't believe you can use my method to
upgrade an SBS server. As I understand it, you must upgrade the SBS
server to BackOffice and then you can use my method. If I'm wrong, an
SBS expert can correct me.

Subject: Move Exch2k to a new server

I am moving exchange 2k to a new server and am using the procedures
found at http://www.swinc.com/resource/e2kfaq_appxa.htm and I guessed
based on Ed Crowley's instructions for moving exch 5.5. Anyway, I'm on
step 7 which says Create new mailbox stores and public folder stores on
the new server to match the old server (This is not a requirement per
se, you might instead choose a different configuration to take advantage
of new and improved hardware). However, I look in the Exchange Manager
and do not find my new server. I only see the old server which is still
in production. Any explanation why I don't see my new server?

This new server has AD installed and is in the same tree as the old
server. In the interest of full disclosure, the old server is Small
Business Server 2000 and my attempt is to install the new server as
Win2k Adv Server and Exch2k. Eventually, the old SBS will go away.

Thank you,
Mike Winfrey

To summarize my problem, my E2K mailbox server is stripping SMTP Received:
headers, and making up it's own. Last week when this happened, a reboot
cleared up the problem, but it came back (not been able to reboot again,
yet).

Ed, is this proof enough?

I've managed to distill the problem down to a simple set of steps.

1. Send email from my PC to the MSX 5.5 IMS server using blat. Here's the
output:

RE: EDU Migration Question

2002-11-19 Thread Fay, Mark
Paul,

I just tested this, it strikes through the Sender and Subject and inserts
Message Expired into the body, but it does not delete the message?

I sent a single test message to myself and to another user. I did not read
either message, set it to expire in 30 minutes. Message to myself
vaporized, not in Inbox or Deleted Items. The other user still has the
message in their Inbox as stated above?

My test bed is EX 5.5SP4 and OL2002 however, does E2K behave differently?

Exchange as a File Store

I know this question/problem has been discussed a bit but here goes. First
put all the legal/regulatory issues aside. Is there really a problem with

messages with attachments in Exchange. I am facing this issue and trying to
explain to management that there are other issues to take into consideration.
Does using Exchange as a file storage/access system add a fair amount of
overhead to the work a server has to do. Is the work the computer ahs to do
significantly greater with this scenario vs having the attachments stored as
files and accessed accordingly? The server is a dual processor with a gig of
ram. It ahs a single raid 5 setup (~100 gigs) and also is sued as a file
server.

RE: Exchng32 and XP

2002-11-19 Thread McCarthy, Eugene (AFIT)
Thanks Chris for your help.

Just for the record, and posterity in the archives, should anyone else have
a problem running the little Exchng32.exe on W2000 or XP, there is a version
of WMS.exe which looks like it was designed to allow MS Mail migration to
Novell GroupWise called NTWMS.exe. I found it zipped as WINNTWMS.exe on the
university of North Texas site (well, of course! Where else?!). Must say
also that it was another look at Slipstick.com which put me on the right
trail.

Note, it is best to uninstall it when you've finished with it.

Happy tappin'

Eugene

The old Exchange client should work just fine on W2K, and I don't know of
any reason it wouldn't install on XP as well.[1] How many mmf files do you
have to import?

[1] Done the former many times, never had reason to try the latter.

The old Exchange client. I've got to find a simple way to convert MS Mail
mmf files into Outlook 2002 (i.e. without installing OL98 etc. on XP).

RE: Exchange as a File Store

2002-11-19 Thread Roger Seielstad
Is there an issue with it? No, not really. I don't see it as a good use of
resources, however.

Exchange 2k Enterprise costs roughly what, 4-5 times the cost of just
Windows 2000 server? So cost is an issue.

The format conversions that happen in Outlook, while lessened in E2k, aren't
completely gone, so there's a bit of a speed hit as well.

It can work, but I just don't see the benefits outweighing the downsides.

RE: ADC Delete

2002-11-19 Thread Dale Geoffrey Edwards
I did remove the 5.5 Server through the 5.5 Administrator. (It is not our
last 5.5 server -- there are still eight (8) 5.5 Servers in this
environment.) I removed the CAs from the ADC and the went to site and
services and deleted the ADC under Exchange Settings.

Your mistake was deleting the last Exchange 5.5 server using Sites and

process isn't exactly intuitive, I'll admit.)

RE: How to move two XCH 5.5 sites to one E2K Admin Group

2002-11-19 Thread Bare, Ronald A.
Are you saying that you can use a Move User command and you don't have to be
in Exchange NATIVE mode for it to work between Admin Groups? Or are you
saying that you can move the users with EXMERGE (or some other tool)?

You need to be in Native mode to move servers between Admin/Groups in E2K.
Moving users does not matter.

Once you get to Native Mode, you can consolidate any number of sites
into
administrative groups. Proceed with your migration, then switch to
native
mode and consolidate.

2 Exchange servers in one org but different sites that I need to
migrate
 to
Exchange 2000 into one single Admin Group.
I can move the first server into the first admin group without
problems
 but
how can I move the mailboxes of the 2nd site into the First Admin

Re: How to move two XCH 5.5 sites to one E2K Admin Group

It depends. I would look at MS's site. Sounds like if your moving from one
org to another that Exmerge may be the way to go. You might want to research
it a bit more to see if it fits your scenario.

Are you saying that you can use a Move User command and you don't have to
be
in Exchange NATIVE mode for it to work between Admin Groups? Or are you
saying that you can move the users with EXMERGE (or some other tool)?

Once you get to Native Mode, you can consolidate any number of sites
 into
administrative groups. Proceed with your migration, then switch to
 native
mode and consolidate. That is the process.

To get there, you will probably want to install an E2K server into the
second site, move the mailboxes to that server, get rid of all your
E55
servers, switch to native mode and then move the server to the first
AG
and then blast the AG/site for your second site.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I have the following scenario:
2 Exchange servers in one org but different sites that I need to
 migrate
  to
Exchange 2000 into one single Admin Group.
I can move the first server into the first admin group without
 problems
  but
how can I move the mailboxes of the 2nd site into the First Admin
 Group
instead of creating a new admin group? That doesn't seem to work.
I thought about using Exemerge, is there another way?

When was your last good backup. Hopefully you do not use circular logging. I
take it you are getting database errors and mail is flowing, if I remember
correctly. My guess is you had some hardware problem to cause the errors. I
would take a good backup and restore it to a machine to see if isinteg finds
any errors. If so repair them and then restore that clean database and let
the log files backfill to make the repaired database current. I would also
look at all logs to see if you are having any hardware problems as it seem
this may be the case.

Your mistake was deleting the last Exchange 5.5 server using Sites and
Services. You should have used the old Exchange 5.5 Administrator.
(This process isn't exactly intuitive, I'll admit.)

I have deleted all the Exchange Settings in site and services for this

site still shows up under the ADC Services, but it has no CAs. I need
to delete the empty ADC.

Once you get to Native Mode, you can consolidate any number of
   sites
 into
administrative groups. Proceed with your migration, then switch to
 native
mode and consolidate. That is the process.

To get there, you will probably want to install an E2K server into

   your
E55
servers, switch to native mode and then move the server to the
   first
AG
and then blast the AG/site for your second site.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I have the following scenario:
2 Exchange servers in one org but different sites that I need to
 migrate
  to
Exchange 2000 into one single Admin Group.
I can move the first server into the first admin group without
 problems
  but
how can I move the mailboxes of the 2nd site into the First

instead of creating a new admin group? That doesn't seem to
work. I thought about using Exemerge, is there another way?

I presume then that if the Organization is NOT in native mode, you CANNOT
move mailboxes between servers in different administrative groups. You then
need to use EXMERGE or some other tool like it. Is that correct? This is

But it happens with external mail as well.

Our test systems have never shown this symptom.

Our production E2K system never started doing this until last week (we
can't
think of anything that's changed on any of the Exchange servers). It's
been

Like I've said earlier, this behavior stopped after rebooting the E2K

I presume then that if the Organization is NOT in native mode, you
CANNOT move mailboxes between servers in different administrative
groups. You then need to use EXMERGE or some other tool like it. Is
that correct? This is what I thought, but wasn't sure.

How about if they are in the same Org? Can you use move user or do you
have to use EXMERGE? Do you know if there are any circumstances when
move user will work between Admin Groups when you are not in NATIVE
Exchange mode?

It depends. I would look at MS's site. Sounds like if your moving from
one org to another that Exmerge may be the way to go. You might want to
research it a bit more to see if it fits your scenario.

Are you saying that you can use a Move User command and you don't have

 to
be
in Exchange NATIVE mode for it to work between Admin Groups? Or are
you saying that you can move the users with EXMERGE (or some other
 tool)?

You need to be in Native mode to move servers between Admin/Groups in
E2K. Moving users does not matter.

You can move servers between admin groups?
So switching to Native mode will allow me to move users between
admin groups? Is that what I was missing?

Once you get to Native Mode, you can consolidate any number of
   sites
 into
administrative groups. Proceed with your migration, then switch to
 native
mode and consolidate. That is the process.

To get there, you will probably want to install an E2K server into

the second site, move the mailboxes to that server, get rid of all

   your
E55
servers, switch to native mode and then move the server to the
   first
AG
and then blast the AG/site for your second site.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I have the following scenario:
2 Exchange servers in one org but different sites that I need to
 migrate
  to
Exchange 2000 into one single Admin Group.
I can move the first server into the first admin group without
 problems
  but
how can I move the mailboxes of the 2nd site into the First
Admin
 Group
instead of creating a new admin group? That doesn't seem to
work. I thought about using Exemerge, is there another way?

regards
Uso

RE: Exchange Store

2002-11-19 Thread McBee, Jim
Hi Jim:
I hope that the book has not been too tedious for you. :-)

The 16GB limit is imposed on Exchange 2000 Server (unofficially
known as standard edition.) If the sum total of the EDB file and the
STM file exceeds 16GB, then the store dismounts. So, basically, you are
right, you are SOL. :-) (This probably should have been more clearly
spelled out in the book.) And, with this edition, you can only create
one mailbox store. If you suspect that you will need more than 16GB of
total message storage, then you should consider purchasing Enterprise.
Upgrading to Enterprise is not a big deal, though, you just run the
Enterprise Edition setup and choose Re-install. Just don't forget to
quickly re-apply the Service Packs!

Regarding your Exchange as a File Store message, I use my
Exchange server as a file store for documents I need when I travel or am
working on customer sites, but I generally don't recommend customers use
the store for much storage. My concern is how quickly I can backup (and
more important) restore a mailbox or public folder store.

HTH,

Jim McBee

I am making my way through Exchange Server 2000 24X7 an my question is
basic. I now gather that the store is the total of both the stm and
edb files. And as such if this total exceeds 16 gigs then we will be
SOL (we don't have the enterprise edition)? Correct.
