RE: MTA Error after deleting server

2002-12-03 Thread Niki Blowfield - Exchange
Yes, I did check this. It basically means the server is down, which I know
as I deleted it

What I wanted to know was why it was apparently still trying to communicate
with a server that it should know has been removed from the organisation

Subject: MTA Error after deleting server

We have moved some users from a remote Exchange Server to our central server
at head office, and deleted the server using Exchange Administrator

However, I'm getting the following MTA errors in Event Viewer every 10 mins
on the central server where the mailboxes are now located

Event ID: 9318
Source: MSExchangeMTA
Type: Warning
Category: Interface

Description:

An RPC communications error occurred. Unable to bind over RPC.

Blah blah

Can anyone suggest why it would be trying to talk to a server that I just
deleted from exchange admin on that server

Thanks

RE: Veritas Backup Exec Engine

2002-12-03 Thread Mustafa Ibrahim

Sorry Hansen, but not according to my NT4 SP6a with Exchange 5.5/SP4 and
Backup Exec 8.0. It is idle at 0% when no backup is running with all
services running as per normal. I personally don't see why an idle backup
software engine should take up 50% of CPU usage when in fact it isn't doing
much at all.

Perhaps you need an update fix from veritas.

Faxing

Exchange 5.5/NT 4.0.

Once upon a time, we had Faxing software integrated with our Exchange

However, it gave us fits, and we eventually canned it.

Now there is a drive to obtain some new software.

Does anybody have a faxing product they are using which they highly
recommend?

VBS_SLUG.B

2002-12-03 Thread Tener, Richard

Goood Morning All,

I got to work today and had about ten emails from my server stating that 10
users had a virus called VBS_SLUG.B on thier pcs.
All of these viruses are in the same folder and same file. This is one of
the messages that i recieved,

Virus Alert!!
VBS_SLUG.B is detected on KAREN() in Logistics domain.
Infected file: C:\Program Files\folder.htt
Detection date: 2002.12.03 06:20:22
Action: Clean Failed (Quarantine Failed)

I went to Trend.com to search more information and didnt find an exact match
on this virus. I also called trend and they said they didnt have any info
on this virus and that i should send them the virus asap. I told them that
I couldnt cause i deleted the files that were Quarantined on the server. So
how does trend not know anything about a virus that was detected by their
program (office scan). Has anyone seen this virus before. I also scanned
all the computers that were suppose to be infected and recieved no
notifications of them being infected.

Keep in mind that Microsoft Small Business Server runs a whole slew of

I have several small (5-25 user) businesses set up with Exchange on a

RE: Veritas Backup Exec Engine

2002-12-03 Thread Steven Cox
I think you'll find anti-BE sentiment is kinda rare around these parts. I
suppose you meant "just did *not* cut it" which is surprising as its
handling a 150+ server environment here very well, and I can't recall the
last time a fellow sysadmin stated a dislike for the product.

On the flipside, I'm showing my ignorance by noting that I'd never heard of
"commvault galaxy" and "spectra logic" until now :) What features did you
find compelling over BE?

Now there is a drive to obtain some new software.

Does anybody have a faxing product they are using which they highly
recommend?

Thanks!

Robert

Have they asked you to restore from last known good backup and replay the
logs or move the users to a new machine and delete the information store
from this one and then move the users back?

Or, more specifically what have they suggested?

You didn't push for escalation? What makes you think that we can do better
than the people who have the source code? Never, EVER, let a PSS call die
without a resolution. You paid for it, you deserve the full treatment PSS
offers up to and including final escalation (if necessary).

How big is your environment I mean how hard would it be to set up a new

Have they asked you to restore from last known good backup and replay the
logs or move the users to a new machine and delete the information store
from this one and then move the users back?

Or, more specifically what have they suggested?

Sorry Hansen, but not according to my NT4 SP6a with Exchange 5.5/SP4 and
Backup Exec 8.0. It is idle at 0% when no backup is running with all
services running as per normal. I personally don't see why an idle
backup software engine should take up 50% of CPU usage when in fact it
isn't doing much at all.

Perhaps you need an update fix from veritas.

2002-12-03 Thread Kevan Dickinson
We use the eFax service offered by Star Internet.
www.star.co.uk We send and receive FAX's via email.

It is simple and very easy to use. It can be monitored and costs easily
allocated..

You can send attachments.

Incoming Fax's are received as either a .GIF or .TIFF.

I believe the Service is available to anyone although they are our ISP.

RE: Veritas Backup Exec Engine

2002-12-03 Thread Hansen, Eric
It was taking our backup guy all day to manage it and we couldn't justify
him, we didn't have a library at the time just DLT drives hanging off of
every server. It really was a headache finding the right tape and having to
wait for a catalog, of course that could as much be single DLT as it was BE.
When the capital was approved to do it, it was decided to revamp the whole
system.

The thing we liked about CommVault the best was the full granularity for our
SQL/Oracle, Exchange, and AD servers. It ran on a windows platform(net
backup wanted us to buy 4 sun servers) and it was a java gui so I could VPN
in from home or anywhere if there was a problem. The interface was also
very easy to use, and I have nothing but A+ things to say about their
support...especially at 3am when a server dies. The spectralogic runs a
225(expandable to 600+ in single footprint) AIT 3 tapes.

We now make a backup, then a copy of that to keep for a few weeks, another
copy to go into a onsite fire safe, another copy to go offsite, yet another
for annual and bi-annual offsite. Bear in mind we are in the medical
industry. To do all that with BE and single tapes would be a management
nightmare. But of course this very spiffy backup system came with 6 digit
price tag.

I meant to say not. :)

I think you'll find anti-BE sentiment is kinda rare around these parts. I
suppose you meant "just did *not* cut it" which is surprising as its
handling a 150+ server environment here very well, and I can't recall the
last time a fellow sysadmin stated a dislike for the product.

On the flipside, I'm showing my ignorance by noting that I'd never heard of
"commvault galaxy" and "spectra logic" until now :) What features did you
find compelling over BE?

all the computers that were suppose to be infected and recieved no
notifications of them being infected.

Exchange Service Account Migration

2002-12-03 Thread Miller, Robert
All,

Question. We are in the process of upgrading our NT 4.0 Domains to AD, as
well as Exchange 5.5 to Exchange2K - actually in the lab environment now. We
have 3 NT4.0 Account Domains. All Exchange servers are member servers in one
of the 3 account domains. We have 3 exchange service accounts (1 in each
account domain), all with the same name. Our AD Tree structure is to
collapse all 3 account domains into 1 single AD domain. The problem is - how
do we migrate 3 identical accounts from 3 different domains into a single
account in the new domain? Or do we even need to worry about it - seeing how
Exchange2K does not use a service account?

TIA,

BM

RE: DL Question

2002-12-03 Thread Dupler, Craig
Perhaps this is a more interesting question than implied.

There are two or maybe three (or maybe four) possibilities depending on
where the DL is located, how many servers are involved and how many
instances of single instance storage are involved.

If it is a client DL, then I think that the "poof" answer is pretty close.
MAPI will not let you send it.

If it is an Exchange DL in the same enterprise as the sender, then MAPI will
send it to Exchange Server, and MSX will error it out. But is the GUID
record in the store created? I don't now for sure, but probably yes. When
does it get deleted? I don't know anyone that knows, but maybe not at all.
Allmo0st certainly it exists in the store, in the sender's view (i.e.
mailbox), as both a Sent Mail and some sort of Inbox error message from the
system attendant.

If it is to a DL not in the local Exchange enterprise, then it certainly
exists in the senders store. What happens on the other end will be a
function of how the system on the other end works. I don't think (here the
rust may show a bit) that Exchange DLs are addressable from an SMTP header
record (to, cc or bcc field), but hey I might have missed this one.

RE: DL Question

2002-12-03 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)
Craig,

Here's what I've found so far:

Ex5.5 builds the SMTP Addy off of the Alias name, not the Display name. As
soon as you put in the Alias name and flip over to the next page, it
automatically builds the SMTP addy. I would assume it passes it using a
%[Ascii code]% string, but I could be wrong. So far, I have found that if
there are spaces, hyphens or ampersands, that it will remove the space and
allow both of the other two.

RE: DL Question

2002-12-03 Thread Durkee, Peter
It just takes out all illegal characters, so a DL with an alias name of Corporate
Contacts gets a default SMTP address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] As with regular
mailboxes, this address can be changed later, or deleted entirely.

Also, I don't think any NDRs are sent out when a message is sent to a memberless DL,
no matter where it comes from.

RE: DHCP Server on Exchange Server

2002-12-03 Thread Sander Van Butzelaar
I doubt you'll even see the impact at all. No problem with it. For an
ASP customer I need to run Exchange 2000 and SQL 200 on one box, now
that is a baddie. Those two apps both like mucho resources. Not
impossible, but not first prise either.

Cheers

Has anyone ever experienced any problems with running a DHCP server on
an
Exchange server?

I dont see anything wrong on the surface. Any bad experiences or

Much Thanks!

RE: eseutil

2002-12-03 Thread Ed Crowley
Well, that would figure when you copy a corrupted database to another
machine.

Bring up another new machine in the same site, and move all the
mailboxes you can to it. After you have all the data out that you can
get out of it, decide whether the old machine, especially the disk
subsystem, is worthy of Exchange.

Just found this error a couple of week ago. They have ask me to build a
recovery server and run eseutil /d /ispriv.

Have they asked you to restore from last known good backup and replay
the logs or move the users to a new machine and delete the information
store from this one and then move the users back?

Or, more specifically what have they suggested?

Subject: Exchange Service Account Migration

All,

Question. We are in the process of upgrading our NT 4.0 Domains to AD,
as well as Exchange 5.5 to Exchange2K - actually in the lab environment
now. We have 3 NT4.0 Account Domains. All Exchange servers are member
servers in one of the 3 account domains. We have 3 exchange service
accounts (1 in each account domain), all with the same name. Our AD Tree
structure is to collapse all 3 account domains into 1 single AD domain.
The problem is - how do we migrate 3 identical accounts from 3 different
domains into a single account in the new domain? Or do we even need to
worry about it - seeing how Exchange2K does not use a service account?

TIA,

BM
