A benchmark if you have time...
I know this subject has been brought up before (and yes, I've looked through the archives), but I'm looking for a little more detail. Our current exchange environment is as follows: - 9600 mailboxes (spread evenly over the servers) - most quotas are 50/55/65 (warn/prohibit send/prohibit send/receive) with about 5 percent exceeding this (some upwards of 600MB) - 3 Protocol servers (running NLB) - 1GHz w/ 1GB RAM - 6 Mailbox Servers (in-house built) - Dual PIII 866 - 2GB RAM - 3Ware 7000-8 IDE RAID Controller (7200 rpm drives, 3 mirrors - OS/TLOGS/Store - 1 hot spare) - 1Gbit NIC - 1 Standby Mailbox Server (empty) that is same as above configuration. This is an _OK_ configuration... it's been stable, but lacks some speed (disk queue lengths on the storage mirrors will reach 80+ at times and I can correlate the 'waiting on server' message with these queue lengths)... the advantage of the multiple servers is that if an outage occurs, it affects only 1/6th of the people... we are looking at purchasing a SCSI disk subsystem for the current servers and are also going as far as looking at purchasing name-brand servers with a SAN. I have been able to test (using HD Tach 2.61) 10,000 rpm SCSI drives, 7200 rpm SCSI drives, 7200 PATA IDE drive.. I'm waiting on a SATA drive (already have a controller)... so far all have performed very close to each other... it's not clear to me that the test I'm using is giving me information that I can use to base my decision on. What I'm looking for is what are others with similar mailbox environments using?. What do you like about your config? What do you wish you could change? If you are using a SAN, which brand/model? RE: exmerge
Create a batch file that would use ExMerge. When ExMerge runs in batch mode, it reads the names of mailboxes to be exported from a text file, and I also uses an INI file to figured out which text file to use. So preconfigure the INI file. Use windows Task Scheduler and schedule the batch file to run. When you schedule it, you will be asked to supply username and password - stick the service account credentials in there. When someone needs to export mailboxes, they could modify the text file that has a list of mailboxes, then go to the Scheduled Tasks, right-click on the ExMerge job and run it. (or if they want to use a different text file altogether, they could even modify the INI file to point to the other text tile) -Original Message- From: by [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 15, 2003 11:52 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: exmerge Dear all, So far all the articles I have read about "exmerge" is, it requires "Exchange service account" logon to perform the task. Seeing as Casey has butchered the NDR's its nearly impossible to tell what's actually happening. I was using Konquerer at the time... I have subsequently gotten to it, though I think using these browser tests is in bad form, especially when one is not just urged to use another type, but forbidden from seeing the home page (Actually if I hit the stop button soon enough to prevent the browser check script from executing, I can see it). Just wanted to mention it, as it might be putting off potential customers, I am no zealot in respects to OS's I use, I use whatever seems most appropriate to the task at hand. RE: misconfigured sender
For some reason, it would appear that your mail server is delaying the message, instead of trying the next highest MX record. Having two MX records, with the first being unavailable, is common practice (at least in the *nix world), where the higher-level MX is an SMTP gateway. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to fix this, I'm still on Ex5.5. Minor change - the setting for "Zero Out Deleted Database Pages" is found on the properties of the Storage Group, not the server. Sorry. RE: eseutil defrag inconsistency
I believe that the online defrag only reports free space, not partially used space. There is a setting on the server to "Zero out Deleted Database Pages". This would likely help the Online defrag to report a better representation of the number. Be aware though that turning that on will have a performance hit on your server, as it will be working harder. Thats actually about when we started looking into it as well (98 - 99). Yes, according to redd-fish those and "many others" have been fixed (kinda makes you wonder doesnt it?). I guess all i can do is hope that it all works correctly in my labotherwise its back to square one :) Another product that a friend of mine mentioned, although in no way is it "big-league" is post master express...http://www.post-master.net/rs/Index/. Exchange 2000 ADC Install troubles
Hey all, I am setting up a development environment to test our migration scenario from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 but ran into a snag. In my development environment I have a Domain Controller that was built and added to our production domain in order to have a recent list of user accounts, groups, etc. This Domain Controller was then removed from the production area and added to the Developement environment where I needed to Seize the FSMO roles for the development domain. (The production domain has all the appropriate roles). When I attempt to install the ADC provided by our Exchange 2000 CD I eventually receive an error stating that the account that I am running the ADC setup.exe from does not have the sufficient rights to modify/upgrade the schema. (I don't have the exact error in front of me). This doesn't make sense because I am launching the ADC Setup from the Domain Administrator account, which I verified is part of the Domain Admins group, which is part of the builtin/Administrators group, it is part of the Enterprise Admins group, and the Schema Admins group. I even went as far to make another account with duplicte memberships thinking that the ADC had issues with the Domain Administrator account, but even that failed. I have verified that this DOmain Controller is indeed running all 5 FSMO roles and is a Global Catalog (the only domain controller in the development domain) . Can anyone point me in the right direction? Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 3 w/latest patches 1.8GHz server (speed shouldn't be an issue) 512MB memory Exchange 2000 ADC Thanks! -dan _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchange&text_mode=&lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: Internet E-mail on dial-up
Norbu (your real name ?) :) telnet to the mailserver on port 110 When it says POP3 server ready stuff, enter user YourUserName pass YourPassword list (Needless to say replace YourUserName and YourPasword with your actual data) See how far you get - if it lists a lot you should have no problem from outlook unless your pst file is very large (>2GB) or you have thousands of mails in your mailbox and activated 'leave messages on the server'. Then it can hang like this Freddie _ Freddie Soerensen Conares Metal Supply Limited Tel : +423 235 5040 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.conares.com "Software suppliers are trying to make their software packages more user-friendly... It is a shame that your website won't accept browsers other than IE or netscape though... Makes it a bit hard to see what your comapny has to offer. Hi Don: You could go with a list-server solution, I believe there are several shareware options of this variety. The problem is that these lists will all be handled outside of Exchange. If you interacting with any of these "friends" for day to day business correspondence they will need to be duplicated in your GAL. Imanami makes several applications that help manage Exchange based DL's. Imanami WebDir provides an Exchange based list-server that allows users to subscribe and un-subscribe to lists. Imanami SmartDL alls you to automate Exchange DL's based on queries of your GAL directory attributes or data in external data systems.
