RE: Exchange and SAN

Mark Twain said: "Put all your eggs in one basket, and watch that
basket." Seriously though if you have good SAN hardware, the uptime on
that equipment is amazing. You have to remember that everything is
redundant.

I can't get past the concept that if the SAN dies (ie FC card or Power
Supplies) then all teh servers you have attached to it are dead in the
water.
Sounds like a quasi mainframe to me.
I still prefer many eggs and many baskets and take the disk hit.

Mind you I would be interested in SAN technology just to put the tape
drives external to the server room (like a few miles away via fibre)

As long as you don't buy into the great white lie of SAN's, you're
golden.

That lie is that there's no performance hit created by taking a single
large
array and carving it into a bunch of LUNs - there's a physics issue
there.
Other than that, its just a bunch of disks, just like the SCSI attached
ones
you probably have now.

RE: Location of public folders for WebDAV

2003-09-22 Thread Erick Thompson
Does that URL work only on the server? I've tried both the form below, and with a .
replaced by the Exchange server name. Neither one has any luck. I can see the public
folders in OWA (//server/public/folder), but I don't know if that's related to the
WebDAV location or not.

Thanks

Modify your Recipient Policy :-) See, that wasn't too hard.

In your recip. Policy properties, you have the e-mail addresses defined.
Add the second address, and choose Set as Primary. It will update all
the users automagically.

RE: Adding another smtp address and making it primary

2003-09-22 Thread Tom Meunier
I'd probably add a new recipient policy. I thoroughly enjoy the results I achieve by
never touching the default one. Especially never changing the default SMTP domain on
the default recipient policy. (this may be one of those superstition things, of
course)

Thanks Jeff, We are on our 5th server now, articles
indicate it could be hardware or software problems. I
have not found any errors relating to a hardware

we need to address per the last of these articles, at

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;271987
(overview)
"The best way to prevent physical corruption is to
outfit the server with quality hardware components and
configure the system correctly. Make sure that you are
not running file-level utilities, such as antivirus
software, against database and log files on the
computer that runs Exchange Server."
"Because Exchange Server is transaction-based, avoid
performing a file-level or offline backup of the
database files on disk. The best way to ensure that
you are preserving all data in the system, including
transactions that have not yet been flushed to disk,
is to perform regular online backups."

Has everyone seen this error? We have been getting
this error recently and its starting to do it on other

causing this. Any help would be greatful.

I had the Mailguard disabled on the PIX.

This is interesting thoughI can receive just fine from my test
Hotmail account. However, I cannot receive from Yahoo or Advnet.net.

Must be the way the Yahoo and Advnet.net mailservers look at my
mailserver

Any ideas?

Hi Tony and thanks for the reply.

I also have a Advnet.net account that gets the same bounce when sending
directly to the Exchange server (@exmail.macombisd.org).

Our DNS points exmail.macombisd.org to 64.88.83.251. The reverse DNS
lookup points to xmail1 (name of the server).

Hope this makes some kind of sense.

RE: Unable to update public free/busy data.

2003-09-22 Thread Finch Brett
Well it 'could' always be something else, that is for sure. I know myself
from here though, that exact message pops up on a regular basis and it is
when someone (even if they have owner / editor rights) opens a calendar
resource, be it an Admin Ass't opening their boss's calendar or someone
booking a room. To me, it's quite common.

I'm afraid I would disagree. I get the error occasionally myself, and am
accessing nothing outside of my own mailbox. I've just triple-checked that
to be certain. I have no delegates, and nobody has me as a delegate. I
also am not synchronizing any Public Folders.

Even if you are correct, why the warning message? Can it be prevented?

Just to be semantically correct, POP servers don't receive mail, they
listen for client requests related to retrieving mail via a POP3 enabled
client. SMTP servers receive mail, they then either deliver it locally
or forward it to another host.

Then What TOm suggested maybe the problem. I have had 5.7.1 relay errors
happen when MailGuard has been switched on at a PIX Firewall that was in the

Hi Tony and thanks for the reply.

I also have a Advnet.net account that gets the same bounce when sending
directly to the Exchange server (@exmail.macombisd.org).
Our DNS points exmail.macombisd.org to 64.88.83.251. The reverse DNS
lookup points to xmail1 (name of the server).
Hope this makes some kind of sense.

Which version of Exchange please.

Do you have a gateway sitting in front of your Exchange server, or does
Exchange receive mail directly from the Internet.
Do you have @exmail.macombisd.org assigned as a domain you accept mail
for? Assigned as an e-mail address?

Why is everyone against ARCserve? I have been using ARCserve v. 9.01 to
do
brick level backups and I have never have a problem with it. The largest
mailbox that I do a brick level backup on is 729megs and most of the
mailboxes are over 100megs. I have never had a failed job and I have
done
successful restores. I would have to say the ARCserve 9.01 is a solid
product it is a 200% improvement over ARCserve 7. The only bad thing I
can
say is that it is a little on the expensive side, but I use it to backup
6
servers and 3 databases.

Subject: Slooww OST sync over dialup
I think I have asked this before but didn't really get any responses. We
have reps in the field that sync their Outlook 2002 clients to an OST over
dialup. For some reason it is very slow. Now when they sync it over
broadband it takes about 30 seconds. When they sync it over dialup even
after a full sync of their mailbox is done over broadband or lan line, it
takes about 2 hours. This doesn't make sense. I know the connection is
faster but I don't think that's it. They don't have anything to sync. I
have changed the server timeout to 120 seconds with no luck. Is there like
a reg key or something that I can change to make this faster. We need to
stick to OST files because we have public folders and calendars that need to
be online. We are also using EX2000 SP3 if that matters but I think this is
more Outlook than Exchange.

Thanks,

Alex

I couldn't tell you. Our dialup consists of dialing to what essentially
is a world-wide ISP, then firing up a Nortel VPN client. The Nortel
client is apparently pretty tightly integrated with SecurID - I'm
assuming it uses the "native" SecurID API for authentication.

I remember in the old days, when we used Shivas[1] for remote access we
had the same problem. The Shivas were limited to using Tacacs to talk to
SecurID. Tacacs didn't have provisions for querying the user for more
information (next token, new PIN, etc), so these features didn't work.
Then Shiva added Tacacs+, which DID allow for querying the user, and
life was good.

You will need to look at what protocol your authentication mechanism is
using to talk to SecurID and see if you can come up with something that
supports querying the user.

[1] Anyone remember Shiva? I'm constantly amazed at how a company could
literally own the remote access market, then manage to lose everything
in such a short period of time.

Ken / Roger,

I know it's OT, but I have a quick question for you two.

We don't have a VPN option here, but we have ~50 users using the tokens
for dial-in. Occasionally, their tokens will get out of sync and of
course, lock them out after three successive tries. As Ken indicated,
if the user is two codes ahead or behind, it will put your token in
"Next-Token" mode and is supposed to prompt you onscreen. However, our
users never see the Next-Token notification on their end.

Why? Is it because they are using Win9x/ME on their end or is it
because of something on the server end?

Server is NT 4 SP6a in an NT4 domain.

It really is a cool system.

We're currently using it for VPN access and front ending OWA, and we're
playing with it and some Cisco Aironet wireless devices - requiring
SecurID authentication before you get onto the wireless network.

Well it's over dialup and we don't pass anything other than IP over it so I don't
think it's that. We can try it though.

Subject: Slooww OST sync over dialup

I think I have asked this before but didn't really get any responses. We have reps in
the field that sync their Outlook 2002 clients to an OST over dialup. For some reason
it is very slow. Now when they sync it over broadband it takes about 30 seconds.
When they sync it over dialup even after a full sync of their mailbox is done over
broadband or lan line, it takes about 2 hours. This doesn't make sense. I know the
connection is faster but I don't think that's it. They don't have anything to sync.
I have changed the server timeout to 120 seconds with no luck. Is there like a reg
key or something that I can change to make this faster. We need to stick to OST files
because we have public folders and calendars that need to be online. We are also
using EX2000 SP3 if that matters but I think this is more Outlook than Exchange.

Thanks,

Alex

Subject: Location of public folders for WebDAV

I'm playing around with WebDAV as a way to get data out of public
folders. However, I am unable to find a reference as to what form the
URLs should take. I've seen a number of examples, but they are almost
all for individual mailboxes, and all differ. What would be the root of
the public folder tree as far as WebDAV is concerned?

Thanks,
Erick

Well, it appears that a number of individuals from this list have chosen
to engage in childish and cowardly ad hominem attacks on myself and
Achieving Process Profitability: Building the IT Profit Center without
ever even reading a single page of it. I have been in contact with
Amazon.com so these "reviews" will be removed in the near future. I
could take this opportunity to opine about how unprofessional, unfair,
childish and cowardly this is, but instead I offer this challenge:

I will send you a copy of my Achieving Process Profitability at my own
expense for you to review. All that I ask in return is that you actually
read Achieving Process Profitability and post an honest, impartial
review of it's contents, not your personal prejudices, to Amazon.com and
this list. I will only respond to indivuals that publicly accept my
challenge on this list, just respond to this message and then privately
email me your name and address.

I have a limited supply of books so I will accept the first 10-12
responses to this challenge. All fair-minded individuals will accept
this challenge and the rest of the "pompous bags of gas" will be exposed
for what they are.

Wasn't this a sign of either the Mimail or Blaster virus a few weeks ago
that it would send email using the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"?

Thanks,

Alex

Kim,

This is the Mimail virus - The headers tell you that Scanmail is picking
it up. Looks like it's doing it's job fine - Be happy!

Detailed logon process for Outlook

2003-09-22 Thread Bendall, Paul
Exchange 5.5 SP4
Outlook 2000

Hi all,

I am looking for information for the logon procedure of Outlook 2000 to an
Exchange 5.5 mailbox. We are adding permissions to our mailboxes for our new
AD domain, but some Outlook clients are getting prompted for their username
and password. I want to be able to log the logon process for Outlook to see
where the problem is occurring I am currently using emsmdb32.dll debug
version to collect RPC information. How does Outlook authenticate the user
account with the mailbox? Is it the Exchange server that does the lookup on
a DC with the past credentials from Outlook? How can I monitor this process?

TIA,

Paul Bendall

Yeah,

I remember them in my mainframe days, we used them for our remote access.

I run 2 Exchange 2000 Enterprise servers on an HP EVA2 SAN.
Each server has a 65GB IS right now and a 2GB Public IS.
16,000+ mailboxes total. I have seen no issues since migrating from our
5.5 environment 1 month ago to 2000 and moving away from direct attached
SCSI disk environment. The big difference I have notice is that backups
are faster because our Tape Unit is attached to the SAN as well and can be
shared by both servers.
