I'm trying to add the email address [EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange
Administrator tells me that the address is already in use in the
organisation.

If I send a test email to the address, I get a System Admin message
informing me that the address does not exist.

Does anybody know what I can do to remove the phantom reference?

RE: Phantom email address in Exchange Server

2003-12-01 Thread Atkinson, Miles
In the past, when confronted with this issue, I've done a full Directory
Export (inc hidden mailboxes) and then done a search of the resulting
CSV file to find which account has the SMTP address assigned.

There is probably a slicker way of finding which account has the SMTP
address, but the way above worked ok.

RE: Phantom email address in Exchange Server

2003-12-01 Thread David, Andy
Apply SP4 to your client.
As for your orphan, do a directory export (all objects - including the
secondary proxy addresses) to find it.
If you arent sure how to export the secondary proxy addresses, do a search
in Technet on how to do that.

Hi All

Just a heads up about a new virus (or possibly a variation of an
existing one) we received. The virus executed when a user unzipped the
the details.zip file. Furthermore there was a text file with what looks
like a random letter generated name. We scan zip files, but nothing was
picked up.
The virus disables Trend AV on the client, plus it disables Regedit,
Task Manager and a couple more like those utils. The pc pretty much
comes to a standstill after that.
We are running the latest Trend AV on our Exchange server plus the
latest Office Scan on the desktops. Our pc's are pretty much up-to-date
with Microsoft patches too.
Trend just advised us that they are developing a new patch for this
virus/variation of a virus.

Plse be on the lookout for updates from your AV suppliers.

Sander

Subject: Private Store size problems.

My company has been reluctant to upgrade our exchange 5.5 standard server to
5.5 enterprise and because of this, I bump up against the 16 GB limit about
every 20 days. Is there any way to access the Private store to prune (or
even delete) oversize mailboxes while the store is offline? Also, is there
any way to speed up eseutil while it's doing an offline defragmentation?

Thanks

Regards

Sander

RE: Phantom email address in Exchange Server

2003-12-01 Thread Mike Dixon
The address is attached to a public folder. The public folder reports The
object in the information store could not be found ID no. c1040af2.

I think this means that I'm going to have to recreate the public folders by
copying all the mail and Calendar items out to a PST file and then delete
the PUB.Edb (and assoc.) files. Does this sound the correct way to go about
it, or does anybody know an easier way?

Apply SP4 to your client.
As for your orphan, do a directory export (all objects - including the
secondary proxy addresses) to find it.
If you arent sure how to export the secondary proxy addresses, do a search
in Technet on how to do that.

RE: Looking for anti-clustering arguments

2003-12-01 Thread Etts, Russell
Hi there

There are some drawbacks to clusters:

1) They are more difficult to administer
2) Memory fragmentation
3) Extra steps when setting up a front end/ back end configuration
4) Cannot support SRS
5) MS now only recommends Active/ Passive (Some PSS techs have gone as
far as saying Active/ Active is no longer supported)
6) The dreaded -1018 error - no protection there
7) There are times when a rollover fails - then it rolls back to the
original node. That does take as long as a regular reboot

The positive side to clustering:

1) Rolling the server is quicker than rebooting a server
2) It looks good on your resume

Believe me, I have a cluster. For the money we spent on it, we could
have gotten a regular server that would rock. I also have a standard
server with Exchange 2K - and so far, the thing has been rock solid. I
can show you What's up logs for the past six months showing 99.98%
uptime.

Best wishes

Russell

OK, I know the majority of this list is against clustering Exchange. But
does anyone have some sound reasoning behind this argument that could be
used to convince someone at the executive level? I don't think many
executives are too compassionate for the it's harder to administer
argument. And I need more ammo than just saying that clusters won't
protect you from database corruption anyway.

Thanks

Subject: New Virus received in Details.zip

Sander

RE: Strange Delivery Method

2003-12-01 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)
So what don't you understand?

The To: address was spoofed and you were added to the Bcc: section, so
your address won't show up in the headers. If you take a look at the NDRs
in your Admin mailbox, you will see an NDR for the address indicated below.

It's spam, pure and simple...delete it or block it or both.

Subject: Strange Delivery Method

Hello All,

I received a mail item in my inbox this morning where the recipient
is set to another user. This is an account that had been deleted about two
years ago from the system. Since then the system had crashed and had to be
restored. The mail itself is spam but my major concern about this one is the
receipt of mail destined for another account. I've looked at the mail header
and the recipient is indeed indicating another recipient. I've included the
header below. Anoyone has any explanation for what happened here and does
this indicate some weakness in my setup that I should be concerned about?

TIA

The address is attached to a public folder. The public folder reports

I think this means that I'm going to have to recreate the public folders

copying all the mail and Calendar items out to a PST file and then

Apply SP4 to your client.
As for your orphan, do a directory export (all objects - including the
secondary proxy addresses) to find it.
If you arent sure how to export the secondary proxy addresses, do a
search
in Technet on how to do that.

2003-12-01 Thread Michael Henry
This sounds like a setup issue.

I generally add the User to Administrators group during setup and testing.
To make sure everything is set properly in the user's registry.

Then change the user to the group you want and re-check. You may need to
adjust permissions some, depending on which group you put them in.

Is there a way to run Outlook 97 on a Windows 2000 box in an NT4 domain
without giving the user Power user or Administrator privileges?

Thanks

Problems with Backup Exec 8.5

2003-12-01 Thread Eric Fretz
For those of you with Veritas (Or Seagate) Backup Exec, I have a problem
with restoring individual user mailboxes. Everytime I try to restore an
individuals mailbox, the job copies 9088 bytes and then hangs. It never
fails or gives an error message.

My mail server is Exchange 5.5 standard running on a Windows 2000 Server
(SP4) with Veritas Backup Exec v8.5.

Thanks,

Sending meeting requests to external Exchange/Outlook users

2003-12-01 Thread Bridges, Samantha
Hello.

Is it possible to send an appointment to an Outlook user in an external Exchange
organization? If I send a meeting request to an external Exchange organization, how
does the recipient respond? Will they have the option to accept/tentative/deny? Will
the appointment act differently then when sending an appointment within your own
exchange organization?

I have a user who recieved an appointment from an Outlook user from an external
Exchange organization. She accepted the meeting request and it was scheduled on her
calendar. I didn't think this was possilbe without proper permissions or trusts
between Exchange organizations in separate Forests???

Thanks for any help or clarification.

You're not going to like this answer, but brick backup is a great big kludgy
crutch for administrators who insist on managing their Exchange environment
like they would a Microsoft Mail environment. Quit depending on it.

RE: Looking for anti-clustering arguments

2 only applies to active-active clusters.
6 is not a drawback to clusters, just not a reason for them.
But your other points are well taken.

Subject: RE: Looking for anti-clustering arguments

Hi there

There are some drawbacks to clusters:

1) They are more difficult to administer
2) Memory fragmentation
3) Extra steps when setting up a front end/ back end configuration
4) Cannot support SRS
5) MS now only recommends Active/ Passive (Some PSS techs have gone as far
as saying Active/ Active is no longer supported)
6) The dreaded -1018 error - no protection there
7) There are times when a rollover fails - then it rolls back to the
original node. That does take as long as a regular reboot

The positive side to clustering:

1) Rolling the server is quicker than rebooting a server
2) It looks good on your resume

Believe me, I have a cluster. For the money we spent on it, we could have
gotten a regular server that would rock. I also have a standard server with
Exchange 2K - and so far, the thing has been rock solid. I can show you
What's up logs for the past six months showing 99.98% uptime.

Best wishes

Russell

OK, I know the majority of this list is against clustering Exchange. But
does anyone have some sound reasoning behind this argument that could be
used to convince someone at the executive level? I don't think many
executives are too compassionate for the it's harder to administer
argument. And I need more ammo than just saying that clusters won't protect
you from database corruption anyway.

Thanks

Jason
