RE: Blocking a newsletter
That's not true. As an Mail Administrator/Engineer, whatever you want to call yourself, there is implicit trust that you will not abuse your power to be able to view EVERYONE's email, due to the confidentiality of, oh say, the CEO or CFO. You have the power to view payroll and accounting documents. But as a Mail Administrator, it is a position of high sensitivity. Highly sensitive documents are passed through the mail system. You are expected not to sit down one afternoon and see what your boss or some other manager has been sending emails out about. It may not be written in some companies, but it is written in others. RE: Blocking a newsletter
Like I said, in some companies they do, in others, they realize that the Mail Administrator has access to everything on the Network, and knows there has to be a certain amount of trust to go along with that title. As far as accessing other people's mailboxes, how do you troubleshoot what problems them might be having? We open Users' mailboxes that are having problems, inside out own mailbox and also log into their mailbox with their credentials 3 or 4 times a day. We then ask them to change their password. But all Mail Administrators know that if you know certain AD accounts and their passwords, you can get into anybody's mailbox. But does that mean you should? No. I have never just randomly selected someone's mailbox and opened it to see what the contents were. But I have worked with some people who have done it. There's where the trust has to come into play. I even showed management that they had logged into some very highly sensitive mailboxes. They then asked me to monitor their whereabouts on the Network and were eventually let go. That's what I said in the beginning. You may the rights to do it, but that doesn't mean you should. I don't go anywhere that a manager or supervisor tells me to. I have turned up the IMC logging, but I'm not seeing any errors. The company I am at now is using Antigen which uses like six different AV scanners in one suite. The configuration interface isn't as simple as Norton AV for Exchange but it's no big deal once you get a little face time with it. I would recommend Antigen because of the multi AV scanners though. One thing I don't like is that it isn't able to report the intended recipients of viruses because it scans/cleans before it gets that far. This is good though but I would like the extra info on who the intended recipient was. Johnny -Original Message- From: Mustafa E. I can point to deals which didn't get done because of RBLs which resulted in real monetary loss, which would seem to make one more likely than the other unless you can point to a court case I'm not aware of. Matt's client side could technically be much different from a normal organization since his firm provides hosting to businesses (clients) who have their own users (another type of client). There are plenty of examples of server based filtering based on individual user settings which could potentially meet his objective and address your objection. Most of those solutions are poorly done IMNSHO. RBLs in general aren't content filtering solutions, they are connection filtering solutions. While they may at some level achieve similar results, their objectives are actually quite different. -Original Message- From: Finch Brett [mailto:brett.finch;hrs.ualberta.ca] Sent: Tuesday, November 05, 2002 4:46 PM To: Exchange Discussions I've watched this thread for a while. I don't buy the argument that a ten million deal will fail because of a bounced email via RBL. It's just as likely that a dept. with predominant females could sue for fifteen million for sexual harassment in the fact the company with the ten million dollar deal didn't take reasonable steps to protect them from this spam. There also seems to be no argument about the value of email in the workplace and that a business may find they loose a ten thousand dollar deal but save fifteen thousand in the fact their people are actually doing what they were hired to do (as mentioned in other posts bandwidth costs, storage costs as well). As for the per client configuration, that works until they start adding their contacts to the junk list or they log into a Terminal Server or via wireless with a PDA. We also don't hire people based on their skills to manage their email. Finding a moderate RBL with reasonable rules and sending a nice e-mail back to a would be spammer seems to work as well as anything. -Original Message- From: Matt Natkin [mailto:mnatkin;natco-inc.com] Sent: Tuesday, November 05, 2002 11:49 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: RBL's Very true..We have hosted exchange for business and we get the sh-t spammed out of us. I think Exchange is intuitive enough to change the servername automagically, if you are talking about changing it in the profile for the User on their machines. At least Exchange 5.5 was intuitive enough to know that if I moved Users from Server A to Server B, the User did not have to do anything. The servername in the profile got changed on the fly. RE: Shutting Down 5.5
Shut them down in any order you would like. The order in which they are shutdown really only depends on if you are doing a manual shutdown from the command line. Otherwise, stop the DS first, which will take down a couple of others services and then do the rest of manually. It is best to shutdown the services FIRST when you are rebooting the Exchange machine. RE: exmerge issue
However, I have run into a bug with ExMerge 2000. Not quite sure what it is, however, I am able to ExMerge the data from the Exchange Server into a .pst file. Then I go back and use ExMerge 3.71 to import the data back in. Yes, everything is on Win2k with all the appropriate SP, hotfixes, facelifts, etc. Curious, eh! RE: IMC Logging Levels? (take 2)
I can attest for Chris asking the odd technical questions in this forum and others[1] as I have answered them. I don't remember what it was he asked, but he was grateful.[1][2] Geoff... [1] Not remembering comes with age. :) [2] I an not even going to go anywhere near the spanking part! -Original Message- From: Chris Scharff [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, September 09, 2002 11:50 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: IMC Logging Levels? (take 2) My conclusion is that you should work on your skills related to asking a technical question. No, one doesn't need to know the answer to a question to be able to formulate a question about it. Sometimes that even hinders the process. I'm still learning about Exchange daily, and still ask the odd technical question in this forum and others. Some of them could probably be phrased better, and on occasion I've even been spanked for one reason or another.[1] Since you asked, let's look at your question and see how it could have been improved: I am trying to find some kind of documentation on the different levels of logging in the 'diagnostics logging' tab of the IMC (Exchange 5.5). I am trying to find out what is logged at the different levels for all the categories. (Initialization/Termination, Addressing, Message Transfer, SMTP Interface Events, Internal Processing, SMTP Protocol Log, and Message Archival) My revised version: I've been looking on the web and the Exchange help files for documentation[2] of the different levels of logging related to the diagnostics tab of the IMC (Exchange 5.5)[3]. Does anyone know if there is a document on the web[4] which details what is logged at the different levels? (Init Archival) If so, could you please provide a link?[6] /Some/ of what you are looking for is documented, but a complete and comprehensive document is not available. In response to the above question you might have gotten links to some of the information along with a suggestion to test for the rest. If /I/ were asking the question, I might have included information on why I was looking for the information. General curiosity isn't one of the reasons I generally do Exchange research though unfortunately. However, including that information would help prevent someone from pondering why you wanted it and perhaps presenting other peripheral (and incorrect) solutions based on assumptions the reader made. [1] I am still grateful to a firewall admin of mine who made me read RFC821 before he's answer anymore of my SMTP related questions. The bastard. [2] Shows what you have already done in this regard. Saves you (hopefully) from receiving an answer of STFW or RTFM in the event you simply missed it. [3] You included the Exchange version and specific tab which was nice. [4] A query for pre-existing documentation.[5] [5] Since I've seen people ask questions where the underlying assumption was someone will whip up a 12 page treatise on a subject, it's a nice touch. [6] Saves you from someone simply answering yes to the question Does anyone know.. -Original Message- From: Joe Rojas [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, September 09, 2002 10:25 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: IMC Logging Levels? (take 2) So what is your conclusion Chris? Should I first learn everything I need to know before I ask a question so that my question can be accurately written? Wouldn't that mean that I wouldn't have to ask the question? I am confused. That question was properly phrase relative to my knowledge of Exchange. I can see how to you it would be poorly phrase but you don't seem to remember that we all start out as newbies to exchange, even you. How did you learn? Did you do everything on your own? If you did, I admire that. I am more likely to bet that you asked question along the way. Just because your knowledge of Exchange is where I want to get my knowledge level doesn't mean that you have to look down on the little people...or does it? I wouldn't know because I haven't got there yet... _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: IMC Logging Levels? (take 2)
I can attest for Chris asking *the odd technical questions in this forum and others*[1] as I have answered them.

Keep in mind that when you look in the Event Viewer, if the online defrag does not show an enormous amount of space regained (10GB+), I would not even do the offline defrag. You need at least 110% the size of your priv.edb file in order to do the offline defrag. One good (bad?) thing is you can redirect it to another server/workstation if you want to through the switches. No ifs or butts (pun intended). D. -Original Message- From: Andrey Fyodorov [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, September 05, 2002 2:17 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: need ammo Hi all. I have this customer who is unhappy about 10MB message limit size on SMTP connectors in our shared Exchange environment. Does anyone have any scary stories about what happens when people try to send too many messages that are too large? What is a reasonable size for SMTP message? Our servers originally had higher limits but a few times large SMTP messages crashed the servers. I just need to convince this customer that it is not a good idea to send large messages. Thanks! RE: need ammo
I guess the best answer would be business-related. What is the standard size of attachments that are sent to a company? I would say that if your company were an advertising agency, then you would need larger limits, due to the graphic file, etc. If your company was a law firm, you would need even larger limits. But if your company only exchanges emails messages and rarely sends back and forth attachments, the default could be no limit. As I said at the beginning -- it is all related to the type of business, IMHO. It could go back as far as Microsoft Mail 3.5. However, I have only heard discussion in various Exchange groups, that 5-10MB seems to be the limit (with exceptions, of course). Has someone actually done a more comprehensive survey of IMS limits or was the 5MB number an off the cuff statistic? -Original Message- From: Darryl Harris [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, September 05, 2002 7:35 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: need ammo The general policy of most companies is 5MB limit of Internet inbound/Outbound messages.
