Er yes geology being the study of the history of the earth and its life
especially as recorded in rocks whereas geography deals with the
description, distribution, and interaction of the diverse physical,
biological, and cultural features of the earth's surface

Or did I miss the joke ;-)

day. There is no ETA, and for some reason, they haven't issued their normal

We are not getting any Blackberry messages in or out of the network right
now (this afternoon). I called Aether and they said the problem was not on
our end. It sounded like the problem was with Cingular, and he had no idea
when it would be fixed.

I've been troubleshooting the poor performance of my Exchange 2000sp2
server using Microsofts guide. One of the issues I have run across is
high values of RPC Operations/sec (avg ~5.5) along with low values of RPC
Requests (avg ~0.1). I have also been noticing RPC Num. of Slow Packets
which is causing my RPC Averaged Latency to be higher than it should be
(avg ~31). Any ideas on what may be causing this and how to proceed are
much appreciated.

Rebooting servers periodically is not a solution; it is just burying
your head in the sand and pretending everything is fine. If that is
acceptable/expected quality of service in your environment, then I guess
it's ok.

RE: Sent Item not really sent?

Can you think of another way to make the "sent" folder message count be
greater than the number of actually-sent messages. So can I.

Subject: Sent Item not really sent?

Server 5.5 SP4 NT 4.0 SP6a
Workstations W2K SP2 Outlook 2K

A user had a message that was sent but never received by someone within the
site (same server as well). I typically track these down as misaddressed,
deleted, delegated, or processed by a rule so it does not appear where it
would be expected. The message does appear in the users sent items with a
sent time of Wed 4/10/2002 8:10 AM but I can find it nowhere in the
recipients mailbox (I also checked deleted item recovery). Analyzing the
message tracking logs shows this user sent 16 items for that day when his
sent items shows 17. All messages in the users sent items have properties
that include both a general tab and a message ID tab with the exception of
this one.

No other mail flow problems have been observed during this time and the
event logs do not show anything special during the time this message turned
to vapor. Unfortunately, MTA logging is not turned up at all on this server
but I would think an internal transfer failure would show up.

The client machine has no other mail delivery services besides Exchange
server and about the only thing really notable on the client is that it is a
laptop that uses offline synch but the user was online during this send and
sent other messages almost immediately before and after the missing one.

No personal folders in use at either station.

What happened to this message? What else should I be looking at?

Just make sure the forgetful Exec's give you permission in writing. As you
point out, they won't remember they did. Then ponder what they'll think if
a sensitive message from their "sent" ends up in the wrong hands...THEY know
they couldn't have misclicked the recipient.

And so forth...

I have an exchange 5.5 e-mail server running on Windows NT 4.0 server.
I have a network tech that is accessing peoples mailboxes just for the
sake of snooping. This is something I have had trouble prooving,
everytime he does it he deletes the log created in the event viewer of the
NT server. If there was a way to recover the event viewer it would be
easy to prove. Is there a way within Exchange to prove something like
this.
I do not want to get him suspicous by removing his rights to access
things.

Please help!!!

Outlook folder shortcut message counts don't reset

2002-03-27 Thread Dillon, Jeff

For years, under either Outlook 97 or 2000, I've noticed that a folder's
unread message count (which appears to the right of an Outlook folder
shortcut entry) does not consistently reset to zero (about 10% of the time)
after reading all of the messages in the folder and then deleting them. The
count just stays at its original value until Outlook is restarted, at which
point the correct "zero" entry appears. Has anyone else seen this, and is
there a fix?

Thanks!

What's clearly criminal is the length of Damien's disclaimer. The email

AFAIK, as long as the company has a published and communicated policy
that says something like "we can look at your mail anytime we want, and
by agreeing to work here you also agree to this" there is nothing
criminal about it. Besides, if it was a criminal offense as you've
suggested the vendors that supply content filtering software would go
out of business since the usage of their products would become illegal.

But, this question is best left to the company lawyers.

I agree this could turn nasty on you, dont do it, make sure you have it
in writing and signed by the management first before you even attempt
this. Trust me when it goes down and you dont have it in writing they
will
take you with them. After all you are the tech that "advised" them this
was possible, at least that is the way it will sound when they get
dragged through court.

It is a criminal offence to read someone elses email without thier

RE: Tracking an Email Message

2002-03-19 Thread Dillon, Jeff

What's clearly criminal is the length of Damien's disclaimer. The email
thingie is always covered in the company policy manual, the receipt of which
you attest under threat of non-employment.
So when DO we start shooting the lawyers?

AFAIK, as long as the company has a published and communicated policy that
says something like "we can look at your mail anytime we want, and by
agreeing to work here you also agree to this" there is nothing criminal
about it. Besides, if it was a criminal offense as you've suggested the
vendors that supply content filtering software would go out of business
since the usage of their products would become illegal.

But, this question is best left to the company lawyers.

Were do you get the information that it is criminal? I certainly don't
agree with it, but my understanding is that current case law (at least in my
state) actually supports that if it is a business account the business is
who owns it.

I agree this could turn nasty on you, dont do it, make sure you have it
in writing and signed by the management first before you even attempt this.
Trust me when it goes down and you dont have it in writing they will
take you with them. After all you are the tech that "advised" them this
was possible, at least that is the way it will sound when they get
dragged through court.

It is a criminal offence to read someone elses email without thier
consent, or a warrant.

Actually, I will say that if you call in with a difficult issue, there are
times when they get pissy with you because the ticket is open too long
(regardless of resolution).

I had a ticket open from 10/18 - the issue was absolutely NOT resolved, and
by 12/15 the PSS people I was dealing with were wanting to close the ticket
at the end of each call. "Well, you are still having the problem. but
we've done alot (and it might magically go away by tomorrow) so can we close
the ticket now? It's been open for two months. We want to close the
ticket."

When we paid someone from MS to come in and look at it, the PSS manager I
had been working with closed the ticket (without actually asking me) and
opened a new one because "the ticket had been open for so long". (that
just added to the mess.)

I just retired from MS after eight years in support. I know what I'm talking
about.

You called in with a specific issue. As long as you're not presenting a
laundry list of issues that case is not closed until that specific issue is
resolved. That it may need to go to another group is irrelevant.

RE: Mail Loop at MS? - getting a bit off topic, but...

2002-03-12 Thread Dillon, Jeff

Software mirrored drive failures usually result in a blue screen. The fix
is to repair the faulty drive. Not a DC or ADS issue, but clearly something
that should have been fixed long ago. At $245/pop, its probably a great
revenue-generator.

..since many of us call pss from time to time - there was this time when
i was attempting to add another DC to my network, and while working on
the ADS-related issue, the Server blue screened on a boot. I was
transferred to a hardware guy, who told me to do what i suspected, (boot
w/ a floppy pointing to the mirror) and continued to work on the DS
issue. He specifically said he wouldn't help with the blue screen issue
unless it was another case. Maybe this guy was lazy, I dunno. By the
way, I'm not attacking PSS - I've had a number of terrific experiences
with them under stressful situations.

nope, i've tried to finagle them before - they're pretty specific about
what they'll fix on an issue. Generally if they have to transfer you to
another group, unless the problem is directly related, they'll not
really help you out. ymmv i suppose.

Hi..

Can anyone help me here...

I downloaded a trial version of Exchange 2000 from Microsoft's website.
For some reason, I can not locate the setup file to install the software.
The download is for 6 files, I have downloaded all six and unzipped them
to a directory, for some reason, I do not see any setup.exe files, or
autorun files, or anything, just the main setup folder which does NOT
contain a setup.exe file...

Also, does Exchange SP2 work with the 120-day Evaluation software from
Microsoft's Web Site???

Does anyone have any insight on this...

Thanks..

RE: Exchange memory problem

Did you peak at the Commit Charge memory usage figures prior to your service

Subject: Exchange memory problem

W2K SP1, Exchange 5.5 SP4 with Post SP4 IS hotfix (store.exe ver.
5.5.2654.89)

I have gotten this error twice today and once about 3 weeks ago. It causes
users not to see and mail in any of their folders.
A restart of the services resolve the issue.

Event ID 1160
Database resource failure error Out of memory occurred in function
JTAB_BASE::EcCreateIndex while accessing the database.

I've read Q216259 and Q195006 and they both say the resolutions were in past
service packs.
In Q195006 it says The Exchange Server 5.5 Performance Wizard (Perfwiz)
makes calculations about how much virtual memory will be used by using the
amount of physical RAM as an indicator. When 2 GB of RAM is physically
installed, Perfwiz will assume that it can allocate up to 2 GB of virtual
memory for a process. This amount of virtual memory may not be free in a
process's address space, so attempting to allocate this much virtual memory
may fail.
So I check the virtual memory that is set. The server has 4 GB of physical
memory and the virtual memory is set to 2000-4095MB. It recommends 4906 but
when I try to create a page file that big it tells me it can only go up to
4095MB. There is about 180 GB of available space on the drive I am trying
to create the page file on.
In Exch Optimizer I do not have any memory restriction set.
Has anyone else seen this problem and have a resolution?

Okay.

Your email client wrapped the link, because it it too long. You can do
one of a few things. I suggest clicking on the link, then when it
errors out, just select the second half and paste it on the end of it.
You can also configure your email client to not wrap.

Actually, a better suggestion is to go to www.symantec.com. Click
"service and support". Click on "I am an enterprise user". It will ask
you what product you're running. Tell it Norton Antivirus for Microsoft
Exchange 2.x. [BOOKMARK THIS PAGE, lots of good stuff] Now scroll down
to "solve a technical issue" and click on "knowledge base". Now enter
the full text of your error message. The first hit is your answer.

Looks like Microsoft is finally supporting Exchange 5.5 and 2000 on network
attached storage devices. See Q317172 and Q317173.

RE: synchronizing OWA with OST or PST

2002-02-05 Thread Dillon, Jeff

Well, they're now in "bug-fix mode" as you've read, so there's a general
moratorium on desired feature updates as well as the more numerous "you want
this--trust us" stuff. Probably worth the wait

Yes, it works well. That was never the point. But, just like a MAPI
session, you should be able to do a synch while in browse mode on OWA.

I don't get it. Why are you guys arguing in favor of keeping a small and
extremely useful feature out of the product? Is it a "we're tough, we can
take it" sort of thing, or what?

Or maybe it is that you've bought into the view that small machines should
only be used as companions to "real" machines. Sheesh, I thought that
attitude died back in the 80's when the mainframe crowd tried to convince
everyone that OV, HP Desk and All-In-1 were the "real" workgroup messaging
systems, and that LAN mail should be relegated to simple departmental
messaging only tasks.

It's amazing. The PC guys have grown up to become the dinosaurs that they
displaced.

Actually, although it is quite small and requires you to move around the
screen a lot, I just did what Serdar suggested. Threw an Ethernet card in
my iPaq and went straight to the OWA...logged in and it worked like a charm!

What I'm trying to say is that currently the technology is available to
"access my data when I am not at my desk". As long as you have a wireless
modem in your PDA, you can

A. Browse to OWA.
B. Connect directly to Exchange via POP3.

So, from the PDAs you can access your data. If they already have IMAP, then
you can pick and choose what you want to download to your PDA when you're on
the road. Then when you're back on the network you can simply synch your
PDA again.

If you have your OWA available on the Internet, then you can "access your
data" even from a kiosk in an airport.

All I'm saying is there is no need to force a web front end to synchronize
with an offline copy of your mailbox when you can directly connect to the
back-end database.

S.

PS: These are my personal views. If you want the official position of Kmart
on the subject, you'll need to contact our Corporate Communications, I am
not authorized to talk about that. What they think at Wal-mart or Target or
any other company doesn't have any relevance to the discussion here.

Countering the argument by saying "you're wrong because your company is in
bad shape" is quite childish.

You should be able to synch what you can see, if synching makes sense.

But, the problem goes deeper than that. Both OWA and PDA's are about the
exact same general problem set. That is, "how do I get access to my data
when I am not at my desk?" To suggest that OWA should not provide good
service to PDA clients is to condemn the product as having no future. I
don't think that any of us want that.

What do you think the view would be over at Wal-Mart of Target?

Well, I have to disagree. OWA is designed to be web-based mail that can be
accessed from anywhere. OSTs/PSTs and such are chained to a specific
desktop which defeats the purpose of using OWA. Plus, if you had OWA
synching with stuff, you wouldn't be getting around the OST synchronization
problems. You'll just be tranporting your problems to a different platform.

If you can set up the pocket PC to be an IMAP client, you would be able to
achieve what you described. I don't have a pocket PC so I can't test if
this can be done or not [1].

No. This is a significant and long standing deficiency in OWA, and probably
an entrepreneurial opportunity similar to the one that ASL (now a part of
Extended Systems) worked on.

One could do it two ways - stupidly or neatly. The stupid way would be to
pull the data from the OWA U/I. The neat way would be to build an extension
to the OWA server

Our 98%-effective content filter is simple enough!!!

1) First line of msg ends in !, !!, or especially !!!
2) "Just $"

Not a solution in my environment, unfortunately. :) They're still going to
be getting a ton of spam (from their previous indiscretions) and they'll
still insist upon me fixing (or at least reducing) that somehow. In our
case the answer is content filtering and the attendant problems that go with
it.

Luckily we've tuned (and continue to tune) our filters fairly well and catch
very little legitimate mail in it. I'd guess we spend maybe 15 minutes a
day skimming through the quarantine and releasing stuff that's legit
(deleting the rest of it).

We also don't catch all spam, of course, but we catch a lot of it. And we
do block more or less all of the dangerous attachment extensions.

RE: fix monitor

2002-01-03 Thread Dillon, Jeff

Of course it depends on the user, and HE is responsible for determining his
ability to proceed safely. Monitors are on the short list of computer items
where the discrete nature of the components gives some hope of a DIY repair.
I've worked on CRTs and the like for 25 years and I can assure you that you
are in more danger replacing your car battery or mowing your grass than
popping the back to look for burned fuses or components (Richard didn't say
WHAT was wrong -- often it's a fuse and nothing more). The flyback
circuitry is massively insulated and as Ken points out elsewhere, poses no
danger when the monitor is off the A/C. There are capacitors and traces
that are less-well insulated but they generally drain quickly when powered
down, whether you care to believe it or not.
Since monitors are a bit of an environmental disaster when it comes time to
dispose of them, it's irresponsible to just toss them in the dumpster
without making some effort at a repair.

Well, Depends on the User. I know how to discharge the capacitor in a safe
manner, and which Pots to tweak. But would I recommend someone on this list

Hell of a Mail engineer, but be all thumbs when it comes to this type of
thing. And The Flyback should scare you. Unless of course, Getting shocked
by a few thousand volts and maybe having to take a ride in the back of an
ambulance sound like a good time to you. I've worked on CRTS for a few
years. And even though I know what I am doing with them, I am still
Scared of what they can do.

P.S. Unplugging the thing for a few minutes does nothing to discharge the
Capacitor.

If you have a zero budget or zero boss, don't let the 'ole flyback
"capacitor" scare you away. There are lotsa useful pots in there that can
fix the focus, the brightness, etc, and you can futz with the magnets if the
screen is lumpy. Likewise, many a monitor has been resurrected by replacing
a $.25 fuse or the smelly burnt component smoldering on the board. Unplug
the thing for a few minutes (an hour if you're paranoid--"years" won't be
necessary), use insulated tools, and borrow some rubber gloves if your hair

RE: MS says antivirus not effective on Exchange 5.5: must buy E20 00

2001-12-10 Thread Dillon, Jeff

MS says (Q263949) and Russ repeats that MAPI-scanning has a potential hole,
but the AVAPI x.0 and shim methods don't (depending of course upon the 3rd
party shim or AVAPI process behavior).

E20 00

AFAIK none of the enhancements in AVAPI 2.0 were related to messages being
allowed to slip through, but were to expose things such as the sender and
recipient of the messages, the lack of inclusion in the 1.0 version being
deemed a shortcoming by many customers.

Even if the AVAPI in Exchange 5.5 was susceptible to letting messages slip
through (an assertion for which I have seen no evidence), Microsoft now has
stated publicly that they have no problem with AV vendors who want to
engineer an ESE shim scanning method for 5.5 and Sybari's use of just such a
technology of the past several years has proved that method to be quite
effective.

RE: Policing the Police...

2001-12-07 Thread Dillon, Jeff

Technologists aren't necessarily good behaviorists.

Change the password on the admin account he may be abusing (don't notify
him), and then give his personal account the permissions needed for his job
description (this you do tell him). If he has half a clue, the mischief
will end. The logs will tell all.

turn on some perf-mon counters and see whatcha see. be gentle with the

There have been absolutely no changes to any software, services or network
configs. The only thing that I can think of is we have run into some kind
of performance barrier based on the abilities of our hardware, size of our
databases and server usage. Can anyone confirm these theories?

Thanks

Subject: Exchange Server - Outlook Client Slowdown

I am hoping someone out there is having some of the same issues as we are
having and have come up with some solutions. Any suggestions would be very
much appreciated.

Our current setup is;

- Single Server Exchange Server Enterprise 5.5 Sp4 running OWA
- Compaq Server Dual PII 450 Xeon Processors
- 5 hard drives - 3 10,000rpm 36.4 GB drives in RAID 5 (Databases)
- 2 10,000rpm 9.1 GB drives in RAID 1 (Transaction
Logs)
- Server is running at 100mbps full duplex.
- Pub.edb = 150mb
- Priv.edb 18.5 GB (approx 40GB of free space)
- Circular Logging Turned off - Differential Arcserve Backup enabled
- 200 - 230 Users and 300 mailboxes

Description

For the past couple of weeks we have notice a perceptible slowdown in client
side response times on our exchange server. The slowdown mainly happens at
peak times,(9-10am and 2-3pm) however we have noticed it with attachments
and at other times as well. It sometimes can take 5-8 seconds to open an
e-mail with an attachment where we have been getting immediate response
before. For scrolling through messages in Outlook we have also noticed a
slow down. Also - when copying an attachment from an e-mail to your local
machine,(right click and copy, then paste to desktop) this response time has
decrease dramatically. Although these slowdowns do not stop us from working
on a daily basis we would like to get on top of this issue and do what we
need to do to keep our Exchange server speedy.

Any ideas or recommendations are appreciated.

Regards,

Hello,

To Hi-jack this thread: Does anyone now the distance your Off-Site Tapes
should be from your production site to be immune from the EMP effects of a
"suit case nuke" (say one capable of a 10 Kilo-ton blast), and exploded from
an airline 20-40K feet?

DLT tape magnetic properties:

Coercivity (Oe) 1540
Remanence (G) 2,600

Someone care to do the math/physics that a distance X from the blast would
keep the EMP effects below 1/2 that of the Coercivity of DLT?

Thanks,
Brent

Here's a somewhat off-topic question. How do you store your tapes? We
have a small network, and a lot of backup tapes. I know many of you have
larger networks than we do, so must have a sh*tpile of tapes. How do you
store them? Right now ours are just laying on a table (except for the
off-site ones). It'd be nice to have some kind of wall-mounted shelf
that allowed for some organization, yet would still keep them handy.
Does anybody have a good source?

Thanks,
Rob

-Tried to explain over the phone to an office manager that he is getting

I don't have time to do that today sorry
-Rebuilt a Crashed NT3.51 server, tracked down who uses it and why?
-The 3.51 server's data gets rolled into the new .net server I am
playing with. Will do that remotely from home tomorrow

RE: Plain Text Only

2001-08-28 Thread Dillon, Jeff

You have a motherboard that is not W2K-compatible, because that's all that
is left. The good news is that a replacement will only cost about 5% of
amount paid to you (and list members) during this troubleshooting exercise.

We'll just to give you some ideas to look at.

Things I'd check. Not in any order.
1. Plug the video card that doesn't seem to work into another system and
see
if the card works. It might be a dead card.
Did that. Works fine in other machines.

2. Check Ati and make sure you have the correct drivers.
Plug
and Play will not always install the correct driver.
Did that. Everything is as it should be.

3. I'd also check to make sure that the bios is the latest version.
Find
the Make/Model of the motherboard and head over to their site. Look for
any
bios updates for that motherboard. If there is something messed with
bios
this will set everything back to the defaults.
Not looking forward to taking that machine apart AGAIN!

4. Make sure you're not booting into safe mode. :)
Don't be silly.

5. Look for bent pins on the monitor cable.
Monitor works fine on other machines. Not a cable problem.

6. Take a vacation and let somebody else worry about it (SEP). ;)
I wish.

RE: Apologies

2001-08-22 Thread Dillon, Jeff

While it's safe to assume that dogs are trainable, network admins aren't so
neatly categorized. Experience here says that the DOG will be less likely
to be letting you know about his vacation plans.

Analogy:
If your dog poops on the floor do you keep putting newspaper under his butt?
Or do you correct him?

The amount of time that is magically available to scold OOO miscreants in
triplicate makes the claims of "time-wasting nuisance" ring a bit hollow,
no?

Fess up -- if it isn't spelling, lack of FAQ reading, it would just be
something...else. OOO to the list is a dead horse, and it should be obvious
that it isn't ever going away.

Each reply to your silly little suggestion so far has been appropriate, in
my opinion. Regardless, you missed my point completely. What bothered me
was Mr. Tout's assertion that he was apologetic but we could hit the delete
key. Translated, that reads to me like, "I'm sorry but it's your fault."

It takes 2 minutes to make this rule, and then you never get another OOO
again.

Apply this rule after the message arrives
With Out of Office AutoReply in the subject
Move it to the Deleted Items folder

Rather than posting to this list to complain about the inconsiderate
people who send them out, make the rule.

I'd have been understanding about the OOO (I seldom reply to them), but
I'm less understanding about the half-assed apology.

Sure, I'll be more than happy to take responsibility for your
laziness/sloppy administration. Anything else you do, that I should
undo for you? I mean, if you're a lousy driver, maybe they should close
the roads during your commute.
