RE: Backup

it sounds like you are backing up individual mailboxes, this is not a good
idea, see the archives for why, is it also true that if you select the brick
backup then you are unable to make incremental backups..

Subject: Backup

Hi there,
I am having probs with the backup of my XCNG 5.5 Sp4 on NT4Sp6. I have a
priv.edb of approximately 23 GB size. Besides is only the OS and little more
(antivirus etc) on the machine. The machine itself is a P3 Xeon with 500 Mhz
and 512 MB RAM. It has an DLT 80 and uses backup software Veritas Backup
Exec Multiserver 7.3.
The problem: The backup of the Exchange Mailboxes lasts 12 hours, the whole
filesystem (27 GB) is being taped in half an hour. Why does take so long to
read out the mailboxes of the information store?
Anybody seen this or any idea?
Thx in advance
Steffen

Subject: Steps toward Exchange Server 2000

Dear DL Members,

I am not getting very far with my own research on this particular
matter, and thought that I would run it past all of you.

Wawa has four Exchange Servers, constituting one Exchange Site, in
one NT Domain. I need to prepare the Exchange Servers for each of the
following steps / phases.

01. Current Environment
Two Domain Controllers
PDC is NT Server 4.0 with SP 6a
BDC is NT Server 4.0 with SP 6a
Four Exchange Servers (stand alone servers)
NT Server 4.0 with SP 6a
Exchange Server 5.5 with SP 4

02. Domain Controllers
From NT Server 4.0 to Windows 2000 Server

03. Exchange Servers
From NT Server 4.0 to Windows 2000 Server

04. Exchange Servers
From Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange Server 2000

I am able to find documents (white papers) to describe the change
(step) from 03 to 04, but I am not able to find anything about the changes
from 01 to 02, or 02 to 03.
In particular, my questions are:

05. Does the Domain Controller upgrade to Windows 2000 (02) impact the
Exchange Servers at all?

06. Is the Active Directory Connector installed during 02?

07. If so, how does it impact Exchange 5.5?

08. How does upgrading the Exchange Servers to Windows 2000 impact Exchange
5.5?

Let me know if you have any ideas.
Thanks.

RE: IS Maintenance

2002-01-15 Thread Gary Aiston

The view we have is "dont fix it if it isnt broken." Although, if you have
recently migrated a lot of data off the server it may be worthwhile running
ESEUTIL to defrag the database, daily IS maintenance should take care of
defragmenting the databases though.

I made the changes to my Exchange 5.5 (SP3) server to prevent it acting as
a relay. It worked fine and passed the test. The problem is some
software we use internally for sending our newsletter to customers. The
software requires us to put in a mail server to send the mail through.
When specifying our Exchange server, our Exchange server thinks we are
trying to relay and stops the program from working. So, I need to know
where to change in the Internet Mail Service to allow internal IPs
(10.10.10.x) to relay and still prevent the outside world.

I changed the following to prevent relaying:
Routing tab has Reroute selected and our domain specified as Inbound.
Routing Restrictions button has only "host and clients with these IP
addresses" selected and no IPs entered.

What would I change?

Thanks in advance

I think once a week we need to post a list of links to the faq that
answer: AV, Backup, moving a server, upgrading, and why not to run
eseutil. Then we could have more time to answer real questions that
don't get asked 3 times a day.

You're not buying the product. You get a term license for its use.

Same with Antigen.

True.

But several things come into play with my complaint:
1. We don't use "user share areas" or roaming profiles.
2. We do use .pst files (I know, I know...PST=BAD, but for regulatory
purposes, we have to keep certain e-mails for a period of 75 years.). These
PST files are all over the network on group shares, instead of in one
central repository.
3. From what I gathered from a quick read of Profile Maker, it doesn't
cover anything about adding a PST file location to the profile does it?

I KNOW I'm being an idiot here, but what other functionality do you lose,
using OWA vs. Outlook?

RE: View Internet Headers

2002-01-25 Thread Gary Aiston

Ok Tom, when you remove your face from the monitor and manage to sit
yourself back down, count up how much time you save by pressing your
imaginary "toggle" button as opposed to right clicking and selecting options
on a message. I guess it gives you so much more time to do stuff am I
right. If you want it stop writing 5 line replies and use the time to write
yourself some code and design a custom custom form with your "toggle" button
on. Anyone who has as much experience with UNIX mailers as you shouldn't
have a problem.

I am not disagreeing that it would be a good idea, I just cannot see what
heartache a single click and press is?

Wanting to quickly view Internet headers is a behavioral problem? Puhleez.
It's a feature that should be available by toggle. They have a toggle on
the preview pane for "header information", after all, don't they? They give
me all this RTF and HTML and vCard and background stationery crap, and I
have a behavioral problem if I want a basic feature that has been available
in every mail client since ELM? Get off it. What's next? Forcing you to
send to only people listed in the address book, and if you want a one-time
shot to [EMAIL PROTECTED] you have to go put him into contacts before
you can send it? Same thing, in my eyes.

It means that the solutions based in some form of technology, that exist to
correct problems that are essentially caused by the behavior of one or more
persons, are rarely satisfactory.

Put more simply: It's easier to stop sticking a fork in your ear than it is
to try and construct some kind of electro-magnetic hat.

In the context of your question I can only assume that the original
respondant was intimating that View | Options (or right-click | Options) is
already very nearly as simple a solution as there can be, thus any attempts
to improve upon it are likely just academic exercise. But I could be
mistaken.

I have a problem where our Notes connector to a subsidiary is playing
silly buggers. Mail delivery is fine in both directions but the daily
scheduled dir sync at 01:30 does not seem to have the desired effect, some
mailboxes were deleted recently from the exchange GAL but no changes are
showing on the downstream notes address book. I have looked at the logs

Hello All,

I am having difficulties with the Schedule + Free/Busy Connector. If any of
you are familiar with this particular issue or can point me to a particular
resource, it would be greatly appreciated. Please note that I have checked
the list archive, but did not find any resolution.

I am new to this Exchange organization, so I am still trying to understand
the layout of the system.

Problem:

In this multi-site (9 sites) Exchange 5.5 (SP4) organization, the free/busy
(f/b) information is not being updated. For example, some users only see a
shaded area (hash marks) when they look at others f/b, while others may see
f/b data up to a specific date followed by these hash marks for the rest of
the calendar. --- I hope this is making sense. This behavior is occurring
both inter-site and intra-site.

What I have tries:

- Update free/busy info. by creating new meeting requests - no change
- Run /cleanfreebusy option at the client - no change

What Next:

Call PSS - they have not been very helpful in the past regarding free/busy
connector issues
Use the MDBVUE utility to clean out and f/b data (first site issues)

RE: Autoforwarding Rules.

why not use the 1st rule to forward on to the other mailbox instead of to
another folder?

Outlook 98, Exchange 5.5. I have a user who has a rule setup to deliver
specific mail to a particular folder. The question is, can another rule be
setup to automatically forward any mail coming into this folder only, to be
forwarded to another user? This user says that somebody else had it setup,
but I can't find a rule like that anywhere. The only rules I see are ones
to deliver mail to a particular folder, not to automatically forward mail
onto another user. The alternate recipient thing won't work because then
ALL the users E-mail would be forwarded, not just mail from the specified
folder. Has anybody else done this?

Thanks.

Sorry if this is a repeat post, I tried using the web based tool and I don't
think it worked. I am looking for a quick way to export Org
information...Org, Sites, and servers to start with and more granular later
if possible. I have multiple Orgs with hundreds of Sites and Servers and
want to document everything before I proceed with a full blown application
assessment before we migrate to Ex2k. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Over the last weekSTORE.EXE (Exchange 2000 SP2) is pegging the processor
at 100%...I have never noticed it doing that in the past. Has anyone
seen anything like this lately?

I have also installed Q316056engi386.EXE but it did not change anything.

I'm trying to setup an "auto reply" for our HR dept to use when they receive
"resumes"
from outside the company. I've setup the "out of office reply" which only
works when a user
sends an initial message. They never get a 2nd reply unless I turn the
attendent off and then
on.

Is there a better why to handle this? and How?

RE: Exchange 5.5 and Active Directory Native Mode

2002-06-27 Thread Gary Aiston

Here's another.

The ADC replicates all Exch5.5 DLs to the AD as universal distribution
groups (UDG's), these can exist in either a mixed or native mode AD. But, if
you plan to use the E2K equivalent DL object for access to PF's, E2K will
need to convert the UDG to a Universal Security Group (USG) because a UDG is
not a security principal for ACL'ing PF's etc. USGs can only exist in
Native-mode domains.

I have an Exchange 5.5 server in a Windows 2000 Active Directory running
in mixed mode. I've been trying to determine the impact of switching AD
to "Native" mode instead of "Mixed" mode.

Anyone know if it is OK to switch to Native Mode, or are there issues I
need to be concerned about?

Thanks.

RE: After mailbox move from 5.5 to 2k Administrators can't open users mailboxes?

2002-06-27 Thread Gary Aiston

That depends what you used to migrate the mailbox, one migration tool may
retain more or less information than another e.g. permissions, calendar,
contacts, alternate recipient etc. etc. To add new permissions you will
need to open the ad users and computers snap in, ensure view\advanced
features is selected, find the w2k user object, right click it, select
properties, i think its under the exchange advanced tab, then mailbox
rights, someone correct me if i am wrong please, i cant remember, its late,
i'm tired and i've ran out of bud. goodnight!

Shouldn't these permissions remain after a mailbox move? If not, where do I
setup the new permissions for access?

RE: 2nd Exchange server

2002-07-14 Thread Gary Aiston

It all depends on what spec. the server is. If the server is low spec. and
you are experiencing performance problems then by all means build a new
server on nice new hardware, follow william's instructions and then move
mailboxes, if you intend decommisioning the old server and it is the first
server in the site be sure to follow the steps in this article - Q152959.
GOOD LUCK !!
