Custom Outlook install - %USERNAME%

2003-11-19 Thread Horst Hinz
I've got someone trying to create a custom Outlook (office XP) install onto
Windows XP Professional with latest SP and security updates. He's using the
Custom Installation Wizard to configure Outlook to create a profile to
connect to our exchange server and use the %username% variable to read the
username. After the installation Outlook gives the error "the name could
not be matched to a name in the address book". Has something changed
recently with Microsoft's security patches or service packs that would
prevent this from working properly? Q306932 seems to say this "is by
design", but it used to work... Q308997 even tells you how to set it up this
way.

Any suggestions?

The only tool listed where? In the client section? Yes, it doesn't really
provide searching either. But there are a number of others listed in the
server section as well as the Sherpa Software product, which also provides
search capabilities.

search all text, all mailboxes?

2002-11-12 Thread Horst Hinz
I've been asked to search all of our mailboxes on our Exchange server for a
specific phrase to fullfill a Freedom of Information Act request. I know
that Exmerge will search the entire Exchange server but only for subject or
attachments. Is there a utility out there that will search the entire
contents of the messages on the Exchange server as well? I've got 1800
mailboxes and I don't want someone to have to search through each one
individually.

Thanks,

Horst

Outlook access to two exchange servers on two domains

2002-07-02 Thread Horst Hinz

We've recently merged two hospitals into one entity in order to save
administrative costs. Both hospitals run their own Windows NT domain (with
a trust between the two domains), and each hospital runs their own Exchange
5.5 SP4 server. Now comes the tricky part. Some of the VPs that moved over
from the other facility now want to be able to access BOTH e-mail systems
through Outlook without having to log out of their workstation and logging
into the other domain. Is there a way for Outlook to access both Exchange
servers?

Thanks,

Horst

RE: How to prevent end users from using Outlook personal folders pst

You can disable PST files via the registry. Look at Q258277

So I took a look at the CIW and only found that there does not appear to be
a
direct way to disable .pst. On step 14 one can choose the path and
filename.
But there is no explicit way to block this. If I enter no path will this
disable it? I found not mention in the documentation online. It looks like
the only way to do this is to not include the pst service and use ACL to
lock
the registry. But as you point out this requires reinstalling.

RE: RAID 5 setup

2002-04-17 Thread Horst Hinz

If money is an issue, buy a server with an integrated RAID controller.
Performance may not be the same as a RAID controller with huge cache, but
you still get the advantage of hot swap, and no OS overhead.

Touché (hope I've spelt that right !).

All my servers are built on a RAID1 (mirrored pair) for the OS and APPs with
a RAID5 setup of at least three disks for the data ... ideal if money isn't
a problem !

You must need the Outlook security update over-ride..! What you need to do
is download the admin pack for Exchange 5.5, set it up. After that it
creates an "Outlook Security Settings" public folder. Then you(if u r da
admin) will need to navigate to this folder and post using the default form.
There you can set over-ride setting on an individual user basis.. For more
info and all da grimmy details check this..

There is something in Technet about a registry hack.. try looking for
Outlook 2002 security settings. Can't remember the technet article, but if
I find it I'll post it.

Hi All,

I have an outlook 2000 workstation that is blocking all exe files and other
nasty extensions I need to turn this OFF!

I can find no option to turn this off under the setting in outlook - nor can
I find anything useful in TechNet...

Any Ideas?

Thanks

RE: Automatically printing eMAILs

2002-02-04 Thread Horst Hinz

How about just creating a rule that prints the messages in Outlook? Not
sure if Outlook 98 has that rule available, but in Outlook 2000 you can do
it. It is a workstation side rule so you have to have Outlook running in
order for the printouts to work.

RE: Computer Associates

2001-11-02 Thread Horst Hinz

Answer the phone? Why would they do that? Try e-mailing them via their
website like I did 2 weeks ago... NO RESPONSE! Too bad someone else made
the decision to buy InoculateIT here. I'd love to change, their Exchange
option is a joke, nothing but problems with it.. stops allowing me to log
into the e-mail server all the time. Their solution? Try re-installing the
product... when I told them I already did that TWICE, they said "try
re-installing the product"... WTF?

CA contacted me, concerned about posts I've made regarding their products.
In the past it has not been their policy to participate in these forums
because vendors aren't always treated very well. They are reconsidering
this policy.

RE: OFF TOPIC : Alternates to SMS and Intel LANDesk

2001-10-02 Thread Horst Hinz

You can set up SMS to either ask for permission, or just take over the
desktop, it's a configuration thing. In a classroom we once had it set up
not to ask for permission, and you can just go and control the PC, nothing
on the screen states that you are in control.

great!

Last question.

Let's say I've got my SMS server setup, do my 95/98 clients run the SMS
setup through a logon script which sets them up automatically or do I
deploy it manually ?

You may want to look into MOM Microsoft Operations Manager.

It should be able to help you with Asset management, Configuration
management.
Netmeeting is very good for Desktop remote control, and comes as
standard
equipment on NT and as a free upgrade for Win 95/98.

With those site requirements you sound like a textbook case for SMS 1.2.

All,

Would anyone have any suggestions to alternates to SMS and LANDesk.

Picture is this:

650 users, 1 site, all win95/98 win NT4.0 servers. Need to rollout
software upgrades, patches, etc. Keep asset management. Run remote
desktop control for support etc.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Cheers

This is a weird question/request. The VP of my company wants to create
personal folders with no subfolders underneath. By default, a Deleted
Items folder gets created under the personal folder. He does not
want that folder there. I explained to him that it is a folder that
cannot
be deleted. It's part of Microsoft's design for personal folders. He is
not satisfied with that answer.

There is no way to create a personal folder without that Deleted Items
folder, is there??

Thanks!
