RE: Protocol for communication between Outlook and Exchange Server
Outlook uses MAPI (the messaging API) over RPC (remote procedure calls). Here are some good starting points. You will probably need the Exchange SDK to do very much with MAPI. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/e2k3/e2 k3/_exch2k3_mapi_access.asp http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/e2k3/e2 k3/_techsel_tech_13.asp Or just go to msdn.microsoft.com and search for MAPI and Exchange. Replying to messages from System Administrator
Hi all: I had posted this to the E2K list and no one seemed to know how to do this. In Exchange 5.5, you could configure a SYSTEM address for the System Administrator on one of the mailboxes and whenever anyone managed to reply to a notification message from the System Administrator, it would go to that mailbox. I could have sworn this was possible in Exchange 2000 and that I had done it, but I can't remember how or find any docs on it. I followed some advice in Paul Robichaux's column, but it did not seem to apply to Exchange 2003 and I don't have an E2K server handy to test it on E2K. http://www.exchangeadmin.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=5088 Any ideas? RE: Goofy Exchange / Win2K3 problem
Hi Brett: Hummm, where to I start I have never seen this problem. What is the error message? Is it a MAPI error? I'm betting it is. I doubt it is really Exchange 2003 related, but more related to the fact that you have Outlook installed on the Exchange server. Yes, I know, we have all done this, but it is a really bad practice for a couple of reasons. First of all, both Outlook and Exchange have their own MAPI DLLs. I'll bet E2K3 has a much more recent version of the DLLs than Outlook 2000. If you happen to get MAPI versions conflicting, it could be bad for both the Exchange server as well as Outlook. It is also bad to do this for security reasons. Same reason it is not a good practice to give administrators mailboxes. The more surface area you give a potential virus/worm/Trojan/etc..., the more it can potentially exploit. Having a full featured MAPI client on the server or an administrator accidentally running this malware could be worse than an end-user running it. Finally, (I'm assuming you don't have an RC in production) if you are evaluating E2K3, you should get the RTM version. It is available at http://www.microsoft.com/exchange for download. Exchange 2003 will run on Windows 2000, but it is much happier on Windows 2003. Consider that during your evaluation, too. If you are short on hardware for your evaluation, get yourself a copy of VMWare and build a virtual workstation that you can run your test client from. Or even a couple servers, just plan on lotsa RAM. Hope this helps a little, - Jim sends -Original Message- From: Finch Brett [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Posted At: Wednesday, August 13, 2003 10:21 AM Posted To: Exchange Technical Mailing List Conversation: Goofy Exchange / Win2K3 problem Subject: Goofy Exchange / Win2K3 problem Originally I though it was an Exchange 2K3 (RC1) problem until I went to another machine and ran Outlook 2K2 (latest patched) to recover a deleted item (from the deleted items folder). Same version of Outlook, reinstalled it to be sure and I can recover a message from a emptied Deleted items bin from a W/S but not from a Outlook client on the server itself. RE: E2K and E2K RC1
Moving servers between admin groups was something they attempted in the betas but coul dnot make work. Even with Exchange 2000 in native mode, all objects have a legacyExchangeDN associated with them. If I remember correctly, this was the reason that the decided it was going to be too difficult to get working. Like Tony, I don't remember the exact reason, but I'm thinking that was it. I remember doing it a few times in Beta 3 and causing myself a lot of headaches (stores would not mount). If you are hoping to re-architect your organization, once you are in native mode you CAN move mailboxes between servers in different admin groups. If this is what you want to accomplish, then perhaps this is the best approach. OnlySystemMessagesUseCDs functionality in Exchange 2000
Hey everyone: I'm working with an organization that has 9 Exchange 5.5 sites and a bridgehead site. They use the IMS to connect the spoke sites to the hub site and directory replication occurs with the bridgehead site. However, they are using the OnlySystemMessagesUseCDs registry key on the IMSs so that regular SMTP messages route directly to the destination site rather than via the bridgehead site. They are moving to Active Directory (single forest) and Exchange 2000. Once they migrate to Exchange 2000, is there a way to accomplish this in Exchange 2000 short of creating RGCs from each of the routing groups to each of the routing groups? Hu I am resaonbly sure that this should NOT have happened. UNLESS you used ExMerge to move the mail out to a PST and then imported it back in. How did you move the mailboxes? If you use the Move option in Exchange Tasks to move a mailbox, Single Instance Store is preserved. And even if it was not, then the size of the store would grow, not the actual mailbox. RE: KMS
I have not seen any whitepapers from Microsoft or anyone else regarding using KMS. One of the best resources I found was the Exchange 5.0 courseware. Not to toot my own horn, but I spent an awful lot of time covering the KMS in my Exchange 2000 book (Exchange 2000 Server 24Seven) (http://tinyurl.com/5tk7). Probably a lot more than was really necessary for the typical administrator. Paul Robichaux has just published a new book called Secure Messaging with Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 (http://tinyurl.com/5tk9). Though I don't have a my copy yet (it just came out last week), but I am sure that Paul will cover the subject thoroughly and in a manner that is easy to understand. One of the issues that you will be faced with is rolling your own S/MIME certificates (use X.509v3 certs) versus going to a third party and paying by the cert. If you go to a 3rd party, their certificates will be trusted by the rest of the world, but you will pay more. The Comodo Group has got a pretty good solution for managing your own S/MIME certs but using their CA (http://www.comodo.net). Baltimore has got a solution that allows your Windows 2000 Cert Server to be trusted by their root CA, but I don't know how much that solution costs. If you just have a few users that need S/MIME capabilities, I would get them from a 3rd party. RE: Deleting both Information Stores?
I do follow your logic on if it ain't used, don't run it!. I subscribe to that myself. Sometimes great care has to be taken when determining which services are necessary and which are not. I have had a couple of interesting experiences disabling services on Exchange 2000. :-) Yep, the IMS puts all inbound mail in to the private information store, so it is required if the server is running an IMS. -Original Message- From: Paul Hutchings [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Posted At: Friday, February 14, 2003 9:15 AM Posted To: Exchange Technical Mailing List Conversation: Deleting both Information Stores? RE: Messaging Transaction Volume Monitoring and Reporting
Jim: If you have big bucks and want comprehensive reports on EVERYTHING, look to something like NetIQ (http://www.netiq.com). Some other interesting solutions include Promodag (www.promodag.com), MELIA (www.sunbeltsoftware.com is the best place I know to find info about it), and OmniAnalyser (http://www.hypersoft.com). There are a couple of other products that you might consider, too. I tested Promodag, but used the Access database rather than the SQL database. In the environment I tested it in, (700 - 4000 messages per hour per server with 4 servers) the Access database really ran out of steam after we loaded up about 15 days worth of data. Problems with ADC Public Folder CA...
Hi folks: I am re-posting this. I sent it several hours ago, but it never arrived. I have configured a PF CA between an Exchange 5.5 server and the Active Directory. The user account I am using on the Exchange 5.5 side is the service account. The account to Windows is a member of Domain Admins. The other CA's for recipients, DLs, and custom recipients work just fine. W2K SP3 on all servers E2K SP3 and the E2K SP3 version of the ADC E2K is in mixed mode AD (only one domain) is in native mode Only 1 E2K server currently installed When the ADC PF CA runs, none of the folders are showing up in the domain's Microsoft Exchange System Objects container. I can see the public folders from Exchange 5.5 in Exchange System Manager in the Public Folders container, but they are not mail-enabled. In event viewer, I see errors when the PF CA runs. The event ids are 8183 and 8270. Both of these errors indicate a problem with the account used by the ADC to connect to the Exchange 5.5 server. But the errors only display for system folders, not the regular public folders. However, the regular public folder directory information is NOT replicating to AD from 5.5. KB article 329047 suggests that the account has insufficient permissions, but it already has Service Account Admin on 5.5. Just for grins, we tried changing the account we were using to an account with just Permissions Admin. No dice. There are no errors that would indicate why we are not seeing the public folders in Microsoft Exchange System Objects. Any ideas? I'm tapped out. I have done a KB search, a Google search and looked through the list archives, but nothing seems relevant. Thanks! RE: Low tombstone in ex55
Leave the tombstone at the default. It is possible if you drop the tombstone lifetime to a very low level and then some replication messages get missed, you will end up with orphaned objects. I did have one instance where PSS advised us to drop the lifetime down to 1 day because we were having issues with replication issues. Some of the recipients from other sites were replicating properly, but others were not. (I'm reasonably sure that rebooting the Dir Repl. Bridgehead fixed the problem and not dropping the tombstone lifetime down so low.) Changing the SMTP Message-ID field
Hi everyone! I have been asking around about this and no one seems to know. I had someone recently ask me how they can change the SMTP Message-ID field in the SMTP header. Their E2K servers are sending out a message ID that they don't want sent. It looks something like this: Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] One of the objections to this is that it exposes the internal machine name. The other is that the company has changed their SMTP domain name and it no longer matches the name in the Message-ID. I figure you can probably change it through SendMail or some other solution that re-writes the header of the message, but I'm wondering if there is a simpler solution. Any thoughts or ideas? Updating Outlook 2000 profile when switching to E2K server
Hi everyone: I have a sticky problem. A customer is moving to Exchange 2000. Everything seems to working okay. The ADC is configured properly, data is replicating between Ex 5.5 and AD properly. Move a mailbox from Ex 5.5 SP4 to E2K SP3 on W2K SP3. Force the ADC Recipient CA to run (there is only one recipients CA) then force the 2 DCs (both GCs also) to sync. Start Outlook 2000 SR-1 with the user pointing to their old server. Outlook starts and they see their mail. However, the MAPI profile still points to the Exchange 5.5 server. The Exchange 5.5 directory (via raw mode) and the AD (via ADSIEDIT) confirms that the HOME-MDB is the Exchange 2000 server. Open the user's MAPI profile settings in the Registry. Several of they keys ARE pointing to the Exchange 2000 server, but not all of them. This is true even if you have exited Outlook and restarted. We have rebooted EVERYTHING numerous times. Anyone seen this? It has got me stumped. RE: Exchange Store
Hi Jim: I hope that the book has not been too tedious for you. :-) The 16GB limit is imposed on Exchange 2000 Server (unofficially known as standard edition.) If the sum total of the EDB file and the STM file exceeds 16GB, then the store dismounts. So, basically, you are right, you are SOL. :-) (This probably should have been more clearly spelled out in the book.) And, with this edition, you can only create one mailbox store. If you suspect that you will need more than 16GB of total message storage, then you should consider purchasing Enterprise. Upgrading to Enterprise is not a big deal, though, you just run the Enterprise Edition setup and choose Re-install. Just don't forget to quickly re-apply the Service Packs! Regarding your Exchange as a File Store message, I use my Exchange server as a file store for documents I need when I travel or am working on customer sites, but I generally don't recommend customers use the store for much storage. My concern is how quickly I can backup (and more important) restore a mailbox or public folder store. RE: SMTP Addressing
Dan: Are you having problems sending a particular character? If you are reading RFCs, I'm sure you are already aware that most data today is transmitted in some encoded format (MIME or UUENCODE). The newer ESMTP RFCs, of course, cloud this a little bit with the introduction of 8-bit MIME and Chunking (for Example, Exchange 2000 actually transmits binary data between two E2K servers). However, if we stick the the original definition of SMTP, the message consists of nothing but ASCII characters. Below is a snip from RFC-821: DATA (DATA) The receiver treats the lines following the command as mail data from the sender. This command causes the mail data from this command to be appended to the mail data buffer. The mail data may contain any of the 128 ASCII character codes. If you want a list of these characters, check out http://www.asciitable.com/. Did this answer anything you were looking for or am I just rambling? Hope this helps, Jim McBee -Original Message- From: Fryer, Daniel M [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Posted At: Monday, September 03, 2001 3:16 AM Posted To: Exchange Technical Mailing List Conversation: SMTP Addressing Subject: SMTP Addressing All, does anyone know where I can get a list of all valid SMTP characters? I have checked RFC821 and there seems to be info regarding length of username and domain name etc, but not specific character lists. thanks Dan Fryer Project Manager GSK Messaging _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
