I have just been given the task of setting up the companies exchange server.
(Exchange 2000 on Win 2k server) Having never done it before I thought I'd
give it a crack. Upon entering the setup screen I started going through the
installation options and I got this
error:-
Microsoft Exchange Messaging and collaboration Services depends on Microsoft
Exchange domain preperation, which has an install problem.

Any ideas??
All knowledgebase stuff I can find relates to DNS of Master Domain

RE: fix monitor

2002-01-07 Thread Osborn, Joel

Sorry, but you forgot to add your "Kelly Only" disclaimer, so you can't make
any threats.

If, in the future, you want to send messages for only Kelly to read, you
should add the following:

Warning: This message was intended for Kelly only. Anyone else reading this
message will die.

Of course, you should probably run it by legal and have them punch it up a
bit. But then you wouldn't have to worry about anyone else on the list
reading your messages for Kelly. 8-{)>

Hi all,

New to the group however I've been watching for some time.

This is in no way a flame posting, however I seek information regarding
the clustering of Exchange 2000 servers.

Could anyone point out any good reference points - be they web or book?
I've searched high and low on various search engines but just get sites
full of mumbo-jumbo that is not relevant.

Regards,

Joe

I'm still having trouble seeing a disclaimer as a solution to this. Seems
like you need a popup that will appear BEFORE sending the mail. Not a
paragraph that will be added after the e-mail is composed and sent.

Post the policy where you post all your other corporate policies (Web page,

Just like for every other policy in the company.

Why is it the senior management across this country (nay, across the world)
feels that they have to remind eMail users on a daily basis about corporate
policy? They don't prefix every telephone call with a recording reminding
them of the appropriate use of the phone? The next time a manager comes to

implementing the phone recording message? It might just make them realize
how silly their request is.

inside the Company? We basically want to add to every message a statement
saying that email is property of the Company and any violation or misuse of
the Company's email system will result in flogging and being sent to their
room without the use of the facilities for 24 hours! No, but seriously, can
this be done just with the Exchange program? Or do we have to use a
third-party software to be able to do this internally.

Hi,

We use TSM/TDP here and it works pretty good now. The great advantage is
that you have centralized backup. We were however having a problem with an
earlier client. It would restore the database, and it would stay up long
enough to pull off a mailbox or two, then become unresponsive. We had to
update to the new version of TDP for Exchange to get it to work. I was
disappointed with the response we got from Tivoli on the issue. Just make
sure to do some rigorous restore testing prior to implementing in
production.

been using TSM's Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange product for backing
up our Exchange Server for quite sometime now. This is NOT a third party
product and is under active development by Tivoli.

I would recommend that you search the TSM mailing list archives at:
http://www.adsm.org to get a better feedback on this product.

We have not had any problems with it and it integrates well with the rest of
the TSM product. You can also take a look at the documentation at:

Exchange when the Exchange portion wasn't even written by that company. We
also looked at CommVault and Net Backup, we went with CommVault.

But you never know, it may be a great product. I don't think they had

I posted to this list for the first time today but didn't ask one of the
most important questions a new admin always has. What are the good
sources for Exchange information? I was an SMS administrator and I knew
of so many good resources but now I feel lost. I know Microsoft and
Swynk but point me to some other good resources for information and
troubleshooting. Thanks for the help.

RE: Losing data after moving to Exchange server

2001-10-04 Thread Osborn, Joel

The receive limit should always be set, high enough to not get in the way of
business function, but low enough to save a server from a crash in case of a
mail loop or malicious attack.

This is advice from Microsoft. And I think it makes a lot of sense. It would
have prevented a hard 3 day outage for one of our sister agencies a couple
of years ago.

Why would you set a receive limit? Doesn't that impact business? The
other limits I can understand, but the receive limit seems rater

At 200MB, the user gets a warning that they are reaching the limit. At
250MB, the user cannot send any emails. At 300MB, the user cannot
receive any emails.

Subject: Deleting/Clearing a Large Message from User Mailboxes:
Programmatic Solutions?

Dear Experts:

Are there any automated ways to sweep a lot of mailboxes (probably 500)
to remove a large e-mail (embedded graphics, I know, we already shot the
sender) besides "recall message" from the sender side? We have limited
the size of user mailboxes and are now filling many of them.

I am wondering if there are any tools in Exchange (Ex2K) that could do
this automatically at the IS level. Sorry if this question is too basic
or infantile; my tentative (non-technical) solution is to send out a
voice mail and tell them to delete this particular message, but I was
wondering if we could do it on our side of the ball.

Thanks in advance.

You need to remove the keycaps first and put them in the silverware tray.

Then when you put it back together, you can go ahead and alphabetize the
keys, so you can find the one you want, instead of this ridiculous QWERTY

I did try the *.flowgo and it didn't work. I get the invalid domain

RE: Personal Folder

2001-09-27 Thread Osborn, Joel

OK. Well, you could have him create a folder under his Mailbox and call if
"Personal Folder". Then he would have his personal folder, but his mail
would still be stored on the mail server.

You wouldn't want to call it "Personal Folders" because that would imply
that it contained folders under it, and that is not what he wants.

Or am I typing too early in the morning for this to make any sense? Or is it
the VP that doesn't make any sense?

This is a weird question/request. The VP of my company wants to create
personal folders with no subfolders underneath. By default, a Deleted
Items folder gets created under the personal folder. He does not
want that folder there. I explained to him that it is a folder that
cannot
be deleted. It's part of Microsoft's design for personal folders. He is
not satisfied with that answer.

There is no way to create a personal folder without that Deleted Items
folder, is there??

Thanks!

RE: Move Mailbox Transfer Rate

2001-09-26 Thread Osborn, Joel

Yes. Change the font to 8 or even 6 point before trying to lift. Also, use a
nice clean san serif font.

And under no condintions should you try to this lift if the font has been
changed ot Gil Sans Ultra Bold.

You NEVER want to use a file based scanner on the Exchange folders in
the server.. That is a very bad idea. You just don't do that period. If
you want more protection then use extension blocking. File scanner your
exchange server will cause nothing but problems and now help at all..
Why do you think there is a separate product for exchange? Never mind..
Don will finish this one better then I can..

Don,

Hi!

What I don't want is to make this as argument. I am just saying that I
would run File Based A/V product to increase the protection of Exchange
server. You can't really say your server is bullet proof. Maybe it is
at the time, but what if/when there's a new threat for security holes.
A/V may not be able to protect it, but it certainly may decrease the
chance of getting infected (IMO). You think that file based A/V
products corrupt Exchange database? Well, Not if people install it
properly and run it properly. Exchange Virus product companies support
File Based A/V products. Microsoft does not say you can not install
File Based A/V products on Exchange server, do they? If they do, please
let me know.

If you are happy with not running file based A/V products on your
Exchange server, that's okay with me. I am just happy running file
based A/V product along email virus product on my Exchange server. And
this is supported by my A/V vendor.

RE: MS Easybake Oven

2001-09-25 Thread Osborn, Joel

Hey, we all have our strengths. Many guys are a lot more comfortable cooking
over a fire (gas, charcoal or wood) out of doors. and that cooking is mostly
of the meat variety.

That way you have more time to get the fire out before you risk burning the
whole house down.

You must like soggy crust.

Warm the oven to 350. Take the pizza out of the box and place on a cookie
sheet and warm inside the oven for 10-12 minutes.

A warmed baking stone would be better than a cookie sheet, but more
difficult to come by.

Hi all,

Microsoft Exchange 5.5. from what I see, does not have any place to
set mail filters (word and content filters) or a place to add a company
email disclaimer on to all email sent out?

Am I right?

What is good software to achieve this!

Thanks All!

RE: Urgent , space is full very fast

2001-09-19 Thread Osborn, Joel

You also need to restrict receive at nn+xx megabytes if you want the
mailboxes to quit growing.

Sounds like a mail loop. Put limits on your mailboxes. Restrict send
at nn megabytes. That will stop it for the moment, if that's what it
is, and buy you some time to react. Now go get a good online backup of
your server to get rid of all the 5mb log files. (You have a whole
bunch of them, right? I'm just taking a guess here). Go find out who
has a rule that forwards mail to an off-site destination. It will be
the person who's complaining that they can't send mail. Or the person
with the 12gb mailbox. Let us know more details if this doesn't help.

RE: Gas Prices [was God Bless America (way OT)]

2001-09-17 Thread Osborn, Joel

Oh the flip side of this, we (my wife and I) got a letter from Kwik Trip
saying that they had raised thier prices at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in
anticipation of higher inventory replacement costs. When the higher prices
didn't materialize, they lowered thier prices at noon on Wednesday. Anyone
who bought gas with thier KT card between 8 p.m. on Tuesday and noon on
Wednesday will have the difference credited to them.

They can't really do anything about the cash customers and I'm not sure if
they can do anything about folks using cards other than KT. I was contacted
as KT card holder, so that's the letter I got.

A couple of counties in metro Kansas City investigated and prosecuted those
offending gas stations within a day.
If gas stations make marginal profits, there are other businesses to own.

The Mayor of Cleveland announced that any gas station engaged in "price
gouging" would be shut down.

I think the Cuyahoga County Commissioners agreed to do the same in the rest
of the County.

Sorry for your uncle, but "price gouging" is what it looks like to the
average citizen

Here in Cleveland, OH gas went from about $1.699 to $1.799 overnight... One
local business owner made the point (on a radio program this morning) that
if the prices the gas station owners pay for gas do go up, they've got to
replace the stock in the ground now with higher priced gas... They need to
be able to cover that added cost... Having a relative who owns a gas
station, I know that they operate on a shoestring budget, sometimes selling
the cheapest gas for exactly what they pay for it and making no profit from
the economy grade. Of course two callers later said that if wholesale
gas prices don't jump, then the gas owners need to lower their prices $.10
below what they're paying now to make it up to the customers... Damn good
idea, but I don't think it'll happen! :)

In terms of forum eticate I read books and postings before I submit a

RE: Send to no more than 25 at a time...

2001-09-10 Thread Osborn, Joel

Perhaps you could set each student up with an account on your mail server
and then document for them how to pop it off into Hotmail.

They'd still have to remember to click the "Check other mail" button (or
however hotmail does that), but they wouldn't have to sign on to a seperate
system.

Inform the students that they can use any mailbox they want, but as far as
the university is concerned official communications from staff and faculty
are delivered to their Exchange mailbox. It is the student's responsibility
to keep up with this information. Problem solved. If they complain let them
know that this is how the real world works. Adjust.

Exchange 2000 SP1, Windows 2000 SP2, GFI Mail Essentials 2000 (latest
build), Dell PowerEdge 2550, dual P-III 733, 2GB RAM.

Dear Exchange Guru's and Goddesses:

Q: Is there a way to get Exchange to limit the number of recipients per
message for a specific remote domain? More specifically, break a message
with more than x number of recipients into multiple messages. If so, how?

Explanation: This year, I allowed students to choose whether to use their
own email address (mail enabled account) or an account on our system
(mailbox enabled account). All students, regardless of their choice of
accounts, are added to the "All Students" group, allowing the staff to send
announcements as necessary. This works great except for one thing:
messages sent to "All Students" always get an NDR with every Hotmail user
listed.

So, I ask Hotmail support why that might be happening and this is their
reply: "I understand how inconvenient it is on your part but I would like
to inform you that we have only a limit of 25 recipients per messages."

Great. If you try to include more than 25 Hotmail recipients in a single
message, Hotmail will reject the entire message. So, I need a way to have
Exchange break up the message into multiple messages with only 25 recipients
per each when addressed to a Hotmail address. Any ideas? Other solutions?

My only idea at this time is to create several "Hotmail Users #x" type
groups, and then assign up to 25 Hotmail users per group to each of these
groups, and add these groups to the All Students group. This is way more
hands-on than I want to get on this; the rest of the process is completely
automated.

If I am to be FAQ'ed here, please point to a specific page. I have searched
the FAQ, Slipstick, groups.google.com, northernlight.com, etc. and have
found nothing that relates to this problem.

Thank you,
Greg

RE: A good space for the Exchange server 5.5 configuration.

2001-08-30 Thread Osborn, Joel

You would put the logs on an unmirrored drive?

Data (that has been backed up) can be recovered. Unbacked up logs (created
since the last back up) cannot.

I'm not sure what the answer would be, given the drive constraints, but I
would press for some more drive. I would not trust the logs to a
non-redundant spindle. But I also understand the need to keep the logs and
data on seperate spindles.

Yes. In fact, you could have just a C drive.

Now, if you want to have SOME chance of recovery if the server crashes, I
would do the following:

1) Format the hard drives
2) Break the RAID 5
3) Take one disk and format it as C:
4) Take the other two disks, and mirror them to create D:
5) Install the OS and Exchange on C:
6) Tell performance optimiser to put the Logs on C: and the Information
Store on D:.

Then, ghod forbid you lose a spindle, you can still recover.

If I am running RAID 5 on all my three drives, are you saying I could just

With the set up you have, it really doesn't matter, because your partitions
are either sharing physical drives, or spanning physical drives -- so if a
drive fails, you'll lose everything anyway.

Hi, Everyone

I have a server that has 3*18.2 GB. I have 4 GB on the C drive.

I have installed a Windows 2000 server and SP2 on the C drive. I need to
install Exchange server 5.5 on that.

I would like to find out what is the best space usage for private
Information store, Public Information store, Information Store Logs,
Directory Service, Directory Service logs, and MTA.

Should I just have C and D drive or I should have C, D, E, F drive? How do
I allocate these spaces?

The following is what I see from the MS book..

Private Information store C:\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA
Public Information Store C:\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA
Inforamtion Store Logs D:\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA
Directory Service F:\exchsrvr\DSADATA
Message Transfer Agent E:\exchsrvr\mtadata

I do not know how to allocate the disk space on each drive.

Thanks

Yes, in the past I have. However, I'm on of the many that is turned off

providing a more user friendly environment for passing information

Have you tried using Outlook Express with and IMAP4 connection to your

what that would prove, but more data is usually a good thing.

It is puzzling that IE can display HTML pages just fine, but Outlook can't.

We'll just to give you some ideas to look at.

Things I'd check. Not in any order.
1. Plug the video card that doesn't seem to work into another system and
see
if the card works. It might be a dead card.
Did that. Works fine in other machines.

2. Check Ati and make sure you have the correct drivers.
Plug
and Play will not always install the correct driver.
Did that. Everything is as it should be.

3. I'd also check to make sure that the bios is the latest version.
Find
the Make/Model of the motherboard and head over to their site. Look for
any
bios updates for that motherboard. If there is something messed with
bios
this will set everything back to the defaults.
Not looking forward to taking that machine apart AGAIN!

4. Make sure you're not booting into safe mode. :)
Don't be silly.

5. Look for bent pins on the monitor cable.
Monitor works fine on other machines. Not a cable problem.

6. Take a vacation and let somebody else worry about it (SEP). ;)
I wish.

We set a high prohibit receive to cut mail loops off at the pass, before our
log and/or datastore drives fill up.

Doesn't seem a bit silly to me

Subject: RE: Attaching Files as Shortcuts

I had this problem where I used to work...

The users were about as dumb as a post when it came to outlook and used it
store anything they could in their mailbox. If there were 10 of them in a
group all with access to the same file server - they would still manage to
e-mail the document to each other etc. It was a major behavioural problem.

Besides some training that was compulsory and backed by management, The only
way we could force people to use shortcuts for internal doucments was to
restrict their mailbox size to say 20 megs. Even still we had 1 Exec send
out a 20 meg attachment to the other execs... boy did that exec look the
fool! *NOTE* We only ever restricted sending ability, Prohibiting receive
seems a bit silly to me...

Single instance works great in this scenario ... but one attachment
registers once for size in the information store, but also registers in each
persons mailbox, so they all needed to learn to manage their inbox and sent
items... esp what they were attaching and sending to other staff:

"What takes less space in your mailbox? A 1K shortcut or a 1 meg document?"

In the end, it forced people who received documents to store them on the
file servers... so they (and their team) could work on them.

RE: Backup Policy

2001-08-13 Thread Osborn, Joel

I've never understood keeping monthlies or yearlies around. You aren't
keeping all the mail. Just the mail that happens to be in the store at the
end of the month.

I guess if you have a 30 day dumpster, it makes some sense (except for 31
day months). However, you still have the possibility of someone deleting an
item out of the dumpster.

But to keep a tape around forever, just because it happens to have what was
in the mail store that one day (out of 365 or 366 that year) doesn't make a
lot of sense.

So you don't have all the mail for that month or year. Just what happened to
be in the store the day of the backup.

Just my $.02US

This seems like something you guys should have thought up ahead of time,
then when you bring customers on, tell them what you have to offer. Oh
well, spilt milk.

Anyhow, now that you are at the mercy of the customer, you may want to
weigh their thoughts, then come up with a policy. Obviously you will not
be able to make everyone happy, but you may be able to come to some sort
of decision.

If I was going to do it, I would probably keep a month of dailies, a
year of monthlies, and yearly forever.

I am implementing Exchange 2000 for an ASP and we have run into an issue
with differing backup/retention policies for hosted customers. We have a
law firm that says 2 weeks for retention then a corporate customer that
wants 30 days. Thank the Lord for multiple storage groups.

For those of you that have consulted with your legal departments, what
is your current retention policy?

Thanks,
Phil Isika
