OWA question

2002-02-14 Thread Robert Moore

Here's a question with probably a very simple answer: Why can't you access personal
distribution lists from OWA? Is this a feature or a bug?

Thanks,
Rob

By "re-did her home computer", what do you mean?
Sounds like some pass-through authentication going on...

Subject: OWA Login?

Morning,

I have an interesting dilemma. Running E2k. One of my employees recently
redid her home computer. Now when she goes to check her email from home
using OWA, she is not prompted for username / password - it takes her
straight to her inbox. She has DSL/Cable.

I thought perhaps she had 'saved' her username and password, but on my home
computer, the login box still appears - just filled out.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. If you checks her email at a
different machine - she is prompted.

E2K SP2, W2K SP2
For whatever reason, it was decided that we would not use last names on our
display names. This was cool up until a couple of weeks ago. Now when we
send email, rather than the dispaly name showing up as just the first name,
the display is showing (in my case) Clayton GDY when we send to hotmail etc.
I have checked all the usual is AD users and computers, and do not have any
sort of recipient policy in place other than the default, which only dishes
out our SMTP addresses. Where does this GDY come from (company is called
Gameday), and how do I get rid of it. TechNet not too forthcoming on this
one.
What gives?

Problem solved

2002-01-07 Thread Robert Moore

Hello all--

Sometime back I emailed the group about a Mailbox Manager (on E2K) problem. No one in
the group was able to help me solve it, but now that I've got it fixed, I thought I'd
pass along the info in case it helps anyone else.

Specifically, Mailbox Manager quit working after I applied the Information Store patch
Q303451engi386.exe. I called MS, and, after checking into a lot of things they
suggested applying E2K SP2. After I got an update to keep my AV software working with
SP2, I updated. Now Mailbox Manager is working again.

People ask questions about all versions of Exchange. We rarely see
questions from anything before 5.5. Most of the questions are, indeed,
about 5.5. But there are also some about 2000.

Hello,

I just joined this list, but I belonged the ASP list for
several years now, on the Swynk website.

Since this Listserver is named "Exchange" - that tells me that
I can ask questions about ALL versions of Exchange? Is that
true, or are there any specific Listservers for Exchange 2K?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

RE: SSL and Outlook Web Access

I think it was called Secure Server, but I'm not certain. The list price
may have been higher than the $175 I paid--I think we got a discount
'cause we're a school. I think it also was the lowest end
certificate--we're not doing any e-commerce or anything.

No, you can't manage the mailboxes from the Exchange server, it has to
be done from within AD U & C. (Unless your Exchange server is a DC--then
you can use AD U & C on it.)

RE: Permissions on mailboxes on E2K

2001-11-29 Thread Robert Moore

I'm not sure exactly what you have in mind. But to view the permissions
on a mailbox, you go into AD Users and Computers. Then you open up the
individual in question, click on the Exchange Advanced tab, then click
the Mailbox Rights button.

OT: Tape Storage

2001-11-16 Thread Robert Moore

Here's a somewhat off-topic question. How do you store your tapes? We
have a small network, and a lot of backup tapes. I know many of you have
larger networks than we do, so must have a sh*tpile of tapes. How do you
store them? Right now ours are just laying on a table (except for the
off-site ones). It'd be nice to have some kind of wall-mounted shelf
that allowed for some organization, yet would still keep them handy.
Does anybody have a good source?

Thanks,
Rob

RE: Fax

2001-11-15 Thread Robert Moore

For receiving faxes, consider jfax (http://www.j2.com/index.asp).
Receiving is free, you get your own fax number, faxes get emailed to
you. They do sending, too, for a minor fee--something like $4.95 a
month, plus per minute charges. The free fax receive works great--I've
used it for the last year or two, no problem. I haven't used their send
fax service, so I can't tell you about that.

It's not integrated with Exchange, but you do get faxes via email, and
it really really works! Doesn't sound like you really need integration,
anyway.

Oh, one other thing. If someone on the outside of your company
is
sophisticated enough to be able to handle supplemental DTMF
addressing to
cause an inbound fax arriving at your Exchange Server to be
properly routed,
then that person will have access to a digital route, which
basically means
that inbound automatic routing can work, but no one is ever
going to use it.
You can buy the technology, but that does not make it
worthwhile. Inbound
will have to be manually forwarded.

Fax really is an obsolete technology that is probably less
useful than an
Underwood.

Subject: RE: Fax

I agree with both EG's (Exchange goddesses)

Can Exchange act as a fax server? Not exactly. Fax's can be
transported by
SMTP as a registered MIME type. This of course makes the server
blind to
the content, and means that it can be a client issue. However,
Exchange
Server can also have a FAX service or connector installed. This
enables the
server itself to drive a modem or high grade telephony board to
either
directly send or receive faxes. Outbound, MAPI clients (i.e.
Outlook) or
OWA clients can send to a fax recipient using ad hoc addressing,
once the
FAX address type has been created by adding such a service. Of
course,
permanent fax addressees can be stored in the AD/GAL or the
PAB/CL.
Inbound, is a little trickier. If the inbound fax has some DTMF
supplemental addressing that maps (insert magic box here) to an
AD/GAL
addressee, then the MTA can deliver it. Alternately, they can
be routed to
a specific printer, or a specific secretarial addressee for
manual
forwarding.

Several vendors make one of these combination fax connector and
magic box
servers for Exchange.

Microsoft Fax is a client tool. It is not Exchange Server
aware. It's been
awhile since I looked at it, but if it can save a document as a
fax file,
then presumably this could be attached to a mail message and the
proper MIME
type would get applied. But as the EG's said, this would be lame
beyond
belief or any human comprehension. Usually people are
interested in
transmitting digital data and getting non-digital data into some
sort of
intelligible format. To take a perfectly good digital document,
then store
it as a useless piece of raster junk, and then send it as an
SMTP attachment
to someone that has some sort of a junky raster-only printer,
well, that
would be sad. So it is hard to imagine a scenario in which
someone would
want to spend money integrating MS Fax to an e-mail service.

The right way to leverage MS Fax is in a scenario in which you
have a
requirement for a small number of users to send or receive
Faxes, but can't
cost justify the incremental cost of something like OmTool for
Exchange over
the cost of some personal modems.

Some organizations are going to be in a bind with this. Most
good
enterprise security policies prohibit using a personal modem to
link to an
external connection while at the same time being connected to
the enterprise
network. Obviously, something like OmTool solves this problem,
but that
does not make the cost story any prettier.

E2K Mailbox Manager Question

2001-11-12 Thread Robert Moore

I've been running the E2K Mailbox Manager for the last few weeks, using
it to delete all email older than 30 days. Suddenly, it has stopped
working. (Or at least it has stopped notifying me that it's working.)
I've tried setting it up again, to no avail. Anybody know why it might
have stopped working? Or what I could monitor to figure it out? There's
nothing in Event Viewer about it. The only change I've made to the
server since it stopped working was applying the information store patch
(Q30451engi386.exe).

Thanks,
Rob

Powerful New Exchange Mailbox Management Tool Released

CAMEO Recon is an extremely powerful tool for Microsoft Exchange that
permits you to easily manage the content of user mailboxes in a way that
simple was not possible before.

Product Features

CAMEO Recon allows you to can scan your entire Exchange Information
Store including all your users' folders (Inbox, Deleted Items, Sent
Items, Calendar, Notes, etc.) looking for matches you specify. That can
either be a directly entered word or phrase, or you can create a
detailed Critical Word List of up to 200 words and phrases.

Best of all, you can initiate actions on matches messages in mail boxes
and you can either delete these messages, or copy the message for review
, or strip off the attachment that was included with the matched message
or any combination. All actions are invisible to users.

Cameo Recon works with Exchange 5.5 or Exchange 2000. You can perform
Advanced policy operations but also on-demand searches to handle unique
problems. It searches the entire Information Store. This means every
folder in every mailbox: Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, Drafts and Deleted
Items. CAMEO Recon even searches the Calendar, Contacts, Journal, Notes,
and Tasks. CAMEO Recon even searches any user created subfolders.

Searching can be based upon an individual mailbox, a distribution list,
an organizational unit, a server, or the entire organization. Any
individual component of messages can be searched (To, From, Subject,
Body, Attachment Name, cc, etc.) or all components can be searched.
CAMEO Recon is licensed on a per-administrative console and per mailbox
basis.

You can already see the benefits of course. Cleaning out mailboxes for a
new virus that made it through the filter, yanking a disparaging email
that was sent to everyone by a fired employee, killing a chain email
letter that is being forwarded to everyone, you name it.

Performance is optimized yielding scans of 30,000 - 60,000 messages per
hour. CAMEO Recon was built with Visual Basic and Visual C++ in
additional to substantial use of Assembly Language for maximum
performance. If you are running Exchange, this is a utility you really
want in your toolkit, because you may never know when the $#!+ hits the
fan. List price starts at just $995 for 1 admin license and 500
mailboxes. Get your 30-day eval over here:

You're assuming that troll's have a concept of gender. I don't make such
assumptions.

I do, however, have it on good authority that you most certainly are not

RE: Freebusy?

2001-10-24 Thread Robert Moore

Seriously, I have a question about cleanfreebusy. At the risk of
exposing my inexperienced status, what exactly is this utility? Is it
Exchange 5.5, 2K, or both? What does it do? Where can I get it? I don't
find it in the indices of any of my books, never heard about it in my
Official Microsoft Curriculum class, either.

Thanks,

RE: Opinion on Backups

2001-10-18 Thread Robert Moore

It seems like there's NO backup software anybody likes. Everytime
someone mentions a brand, they get toasted. We use ArcServe (foisted on
me by others). I'm not real wild about it, but I don't hate it either.
But then I haven't had to do a major recovery with it yet. Their support
is pretty poor, but so far the software has done the job for us (like I
said, no disaster recoveries yet). I don't know that I'd go so far as to
recommend it, but I wouldn't totally dis it either.

Outlook Question

2001-10-05 Thread Robert Moore

Hello all--

Is it possible to add a "Cancel" button to a dialog box in Outlook?
Specifically, when a user accidentally clicks the close box for
Outlook--thinking he's closing a message, but instead closing the whole
program--Outlook asks if he wants to delete everything from his Deleted
Items folder, with "Yes" or "No" being the only responses. Whichever one
he clicks on, the program quits. So, can I add a "Cancel" button that
would allow him to resume the program without quitting?

Thanks,
Rob

it is
a major brand At that time) something which had a 64 KB of memory and
GWBasic in its ROM. I Was damn Illiterate those days I did not knew how
to
find the configuration Of that "Toy"

Then not to mention the Commodore ant ARC computer with 256 memory And
no
hard disk - 51/2 floppies. And that first floppy diskette of mine.. What
trouble I went through to own that..

Not sure this message made it.

Maybe someone else has experienced this. I have 1 user that can not log
into OWA. His box has the right username associated to it. And all the
spelling is right. When he logs into OWA to his mailbox it says can not
connect to server. I can log in as me to his box so it CAN find the
server.
I did change his username in AD but there are other who have had
username
changes and they work. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

RE: Mailbox Manager Question

2001-09-26 Thread Robert Moore

Sure.

If you've got E2K SP1 going, Mailbox Manager is already installed. Just
no policies have been created.

Open Exchange System Manager. Open Recipients. Right click Recipient
Policies and choose New, Recipient Policy. Click the checkbox for
Mailbox Manager Settings and then OK.

On the General tab, be sure to Modify the Filter rules. (This is the
step I omitted before.) I just left all the defaults.

On the Mailbox Manager Settings tab, uncheck the items you don't want to
process. Notice that the age and size limits are ANDed together. So if
you want to delete anything older than 30 days, set the age for 30 days
and the size for Any. For the first run it's a good idea to move things
to the Deleted Items folder rather than delete them immediately. Then if
things don't go right, you can get stuff back.

Finally, go into Administrative Groups, your organization name, find
your server (you have to set it up for every server separately) and
right click it. Then choose Properties. Go to Mailbox Management tab and
set the schedule, set what kind of report you want to get, and who will
get it.

That should do it.

I found that the thing I didn't do was set the Filter Rules to indicate

Mailbox Manager Question

2001-09-25 Thread Robert Moore

We're running a single Exchange 2000 SP1 server. A couple of weeks ago I
enabled Mailbox Manager on it. Following the directions in the July
issue of Exchange Administrator Magazine, I set it up to run on Saturday
at midnight, and told it to delete anything in the Inbox, Sent Items,
and Deleted Items folders that is older than 30 days. I also set it to
send me a detailed report.

Everytime it runs, though, all I get is this:
The Microsoft Exchange Server Mailbox Manager has completed processing
mailboxes

Any ideas where I might have gone wrong?

Your other alternative (which is what we do, as a very small

There is no OWA 2000 "component" per se. Its not optional, its part of
any
E2k install.
To create the Front End server, you would need to install Exch 2k EE,
then
check the "Front-End Server" box under properties.

okay, bear with me here . . .

assuming it installs in roughly the same way xch 5.5 owa does, I only
install that owa component on the front-end iis server or do you have to
do
an "exchange 2k" install now + xch 2k owa? Or do you simply have to blow
a
XCH 2k EE license for any machine running owa in a front-end/back-end

No, but to put OWA 2000 on a stand-alone Server you need to implement a
Frontend/Backend solution which requires at least one Enterprise Edition
for the Frontend server machine.

RE: IIS Front End to OWA 2000?

2001-08-27 Thread Robert Moore

My understanding is that you must do a Front End/Back End arrangement,
and you have to use the Enterprise version of Exchange 2000. The Front
End box doesn't have to have much on it--no mailboxes, that is--but it
has to have E2K on it.

Subject: IIS Front End to OWA 2000?

I'm currently in the early planning phase of an enterprise messaging
rollout
for a smallish company. I'm well-experienced with Exchange 5.5 and OWA
and
I've done my share of reading and research on Exchange 2000. The
problem is
that I've got a client with a pre-existing "fearofExchangeintheDMZ"
disease.
Since I obviously need to host whatever WWW service for OWA in the DMZ,
I
need some advice on the front end. Can a vanilla IIS 5.0 installation
support the web services for OWA inside the corporate LAN? I've found
plenty of info on doing OWA Front End/Back End configurations, but none
on
IIS-->OWA ones. Is this possible, or does IIS have problems
authenticating?
or are there ISAPI problems, etc?

If this can't be done, I have no problems telling the client that I'm
going
to put Exchange in his DMZ and do a standard F/E B/E config but I'm
going to
have to convince him and his cronies that their AD and message store is
still safe.

Thanks.

RE: POP question

That was pretty much my plan. But I thought I'd see if anybody had any
other ideas first.

I have a user who, for some strange reason, likes to have his Yahoo
account check his email on our Exchange server. (We offer OWA for our
users when they're off site.) It was all working fine for him until
recently when we upgraded from 5.5 to E2K SP1. Now his Yahoo account
will only check for his mail if he tells it to check for all messages
(as opposed to only new messages). Otherwise he gets an error message to
the effect that the command (from Yahoo) to Retrieve New Messages Only
was not recognized by our server.

Any idea what might have caused this change and how to fix it? My books
are unenlightening regarding POP issues.

Thanks,
Rob

Where does that NT group "Everyone" exist, though? (I can't find it in

On Friday we did a successful upgrade from Exchange 5.5 SP3 to Exchange
2000 SP1. (Thanks, those of you who chipped in with advice.) One
quirkiness has surfaced, though. We had a distribution list ("Everyone")
that included everyone at the school. That list was not replicated to
the new server. However, when I tried to re-create it from scratch, I
get the message that it already exists. You can't mail to it, but
somehow Exchange thinks it does exist.

In any case, I just created a new one and called it "Everybody." So I'm
mostly just curious to know if anyone has any idea about where
"Everyone" has gone.

Thanks,
Rob

RE: ADC connector setup

2001-08-17 Thread Robert Moore

What we decided to do (just now) is create a folder for all the contacts (we
have a lot of them--our students who do not have Exchange accounts, but are
just Custom Recipients) and groups, and then let it run. It worked
perfectly.

Thanks for your input. I may have more questions as the day goes by.

You can't have multiple user accounts with the same ID no matter how many
OU's you have and no matter what OU you setup for ADC replication. If you
are talking about an E2k upgrade after a Win2k migration then you could
definitely make use of the temp OU as a sort of staging area for sorting out
where all the id's go. The temp OU just doesn't make much sense for an on
going administration type setup.

RE: ADC connector setup

That (the one way connection) seems fine for when the conversion is already
done. But what about during the upgrade process (from 5.5 to 2000) when we
have to get all the info off the Exchange 5.5 server into AD?

When Exchange replicates with AD, does it search all of AD regardless of the
default OU for the corresponding user account? And if it does not find a
user account, does it then create a new account in the specified default OU?

If this is right, then a temporary OU makes a lot of sense.

I'm not really sure. It is pretty easy to setup the Windows->Exchange
connection to go from multiple OU's into one Recipient Container, but I
don't see any way to determine what OU to put accounts in if you are coming
from one Recipient Container to Multiple OU's.

A work around would be to create a temp OU where new accounts from Exchange
get created and manually move them to the appropriate OU. Not a great
solution though.

Personally I wouldn't bother with a two-way, I'd just create the accounts in
AD and have the ADC create the Mailbox. Anyone else here have any ideas?

The connection agreement goes from one Exchange Recipient container to one
Win2k OU. We are likely going to setup our system as a one way from
Win2k->Exchange that way no matter what OU it comes from it will get created
in the right Exchange Recipient container.

For a bulk load (ie: if you are using the ADC to populate your AD with
users) create a temporary import OU and then move the users into the right
OU as you go along your migration.

ADC connector setup

2001-08-17 Thread Robert Moore

I'm in the middle of setting up my first Recipient Connection Agreement, and
I'm still a bit confused. On the "From Exchange" tab, you have to choose a
"Default destination." Since we have multiple OUs in our AD, do I choose our
site, instead of an individual OU? Or is the "Default destination" just
where it creates accounts it doesn't know what else to do with? (In which
case I would just choose a convenient OU.)

Thanks,
Rob

Once you've upgraded from Exchange 5.5 to 2000, do you leave the ADC in
place? Or, once the upgrade is complete, has it outlived its usefulness?

You can add multiple containers in both the "from Exchange" and "from
Windows" tabs.

Stupid E2K upgrade question

2001-08-13 Thread Robert Moore

In the Exchange Server "In-Place Upgrade from Microsoft Exchange 5.5 to
Microsoft Exchange 2000" white paper, there's a section (page 10) that talks
about creating ADC connection agreements. It talks about setting up a
Recipient Connection Agreement and whatnot. It says "On the From Exchange
and From Windows tabs, enter the name of the Exchange recipients container
that contains your recipients."

Now here's my question. I don't understand the next sentence in the paper.
It says, "Also enter the Organizational Unit that contains your Active
Directory users."

What does this mean? We have six OUs. The bulk of our Exchange users are in
two of them. Which one do I pick?

Thanks,
Rob
