RE: Header Info

2003-12-19 Thread Scott Force
Verizon is a major telco, ISP provider in my area. I've tried telnet'ing
from my box and I get connected for about 5 seconds then it drops my
connectiom, I get a message that the connection to host was lost.

How I was able to figure out they were blocking my domain was by having a
friend from outside my company try to send a basic helo command with the
from address a yahoo account and another from my domain account. The
yahoo command completed successfully but my e-mail was blocked, I forget
the exact error. They are blocking me, it's just a matter of getting
someone on the phone who can help me.

RE: Header Info

2003-12-19 Thread Scott Force
That is what I'm trying to tell this admin at Verizon.net. They recently
implemeneted this new anti-spam software that has started blocking our
e-mail domain. We're not on any RBL's and our PTR record is correct.
It's not kicking the e-mail right back to the end-user, it's retrying in
the IMS queue then sending the NDR back to our senders.

Potentially silly question. (Technical, non-ethical, sorry)
If I send an e-mail to external domain and it sits in my outbound IMS
queue and can't get delivered because of a restriction on the receiving
domain's e-mail server, my NDR should have header info in right?

RE: Insufficient System resources

2003-12-10 Thread Scott Force
Joshua, I had Groupshield running for over two years on a 5.5 box then one
day it started screwing things up. I spent weeks with their support to
try and figure it out but we never did. Once I removed it and went with
Trend, I haven't looked back since. It's definitely worth looking into as
a problem source.

SMTP Woes

2003-11-25 Thread Scott Force
Exchange 5.5/4/Win2000/4.
About 1 week ago I started having problems e-mailing users @verizon.net
(206.46.170.12). The NDR's state "One or more mandatory argument(s) were
missing from the recipient" and the stuck messages in the outbound IMS
queue have the follwing error "[450 Requested mail action not taken-Try
later:sc006pub.verizon.net]". This is the only domain I am having
problems e-mailing. I am not on any RBL's and I can telnet their relay
server for about 10 seconds then it disconnects me. I've had the Verizon
users contact support and they are telling them it's a problem on my end.
What should I be looking at? Thanks, Scott.

Removing 1st Exchange Server

2003-11-11 Thread Scott Force
Exchange 5.5/NT 4.0
I'm using Ed's move server method and I'm at the point where I am going to
test and make sure I did everything correctly. MS article 152959
recommends disconnecting the old server from the network to confirm that
the procedure was followed correctly. My old Exchange box is my PDC and I
don't want to bring it down. If I just stop all the Exchange services
will this produce the same effect as removing the box from the network, or
is there something else running in the background the will not give me a
true test that I did everything correctly? Thanks in advance, Scott.

RE: Trend? (Was Exchange Services).

2003-08-14 Thread Scott Force
Pete,
I had it running on my 5.5 box on NT 4.0 with no problems. I recently
bought a sweet new box (thanks Dell) and began the server move (thanks
ed). For some reason Groupshield doesn't play well with permissions and
the service accounts on Windows 2000. I guess until you run into a
specific problem, your managment team won't be too eager to spend the
dough on a better product. Good luck.

RE: Exchange Services

2003-08-14 Thread Scott Force
I understand the difference between domain and exchange admin rights. I
only wrote that for purposes of brevity in this post. (I should have been
more specific). For clarification, I have a service account setup to
start and run the Exchange services and the admin account has appropriate
permissions at the three levels within Exchange admin. I have the same
admin account setup on my old (and still running) Exchange 5.5 box on NT
4.0 and I can backup without a problem. (both w/Veritas and NTBackup).

Is there something with Windows 2000 that I am missing? I noticed the
addition of a service in 2000, the Exchange Event Service which doesn't
start with the service account that starts the other Exchange services on
this server. What is that service for and why does it only start with the
admin account login info?

Exchange Services

2003-08-14 Thread Scott Force
I just setup a new Exchange 5.5/4 server on Windows 2000. (I'm in the
process of using Ed's move server method). I installed the new server in
the same org/site with a different name and I moved all my users mailboxes
over. Everything seems to be working as planned until I try to backup the
IS.

I use Backup Exec (9.0) and it was failing with "access denied to database
information store". Made sure all the permissions were correct and they
are so I then tried to use plain old NTBackup, whick it too failed with
the following Event ID:

Event Source: NTBackup
Event ID: 8010
Description: Microsoft Exchange services returned 'Access is denied. 'from
a call to 'BackupOpen()' additional data
'\\Servername\E$\exchsrvr\DSADATA\\edb4.log'

Any thoughts or suggestions? Could I have hosed the store during the
move? (I used Exchange Server Admin to move the mailboxes). Veritas
suggested running eseutil and isinteg to check the integrity of the IS.
Thanks in advance, Scott.

RE: Permission Issue?

Somehow this user was able to send out an e-mail an hour after his account
was disabled. I checked my VPN log and he logged on before he was fired

Windows NT4.0/6a domain running Exchange 5.5/4 single site. User is

RE: Exchange and SQL

2003-07-14 Thread Scott Force
The old Exchange box is a relic, it's going one way or the other and I
wouldn't use it for solitare at this point. This whole discussion arouse
when I put together a request for a new Exchange server. I don't think I
am going to be able to win the argument to keep them separate. The SQL
server was overkill to begin with now I'm going to have to live with SQL
and Exchange on one box. I was looking for known software related issues
that might help me with my argument but I couldn't find any. Thanks for
the help, Scott.

Exchange and SQL

2003-07-14 Thread Scott Force
We have an SQL 2000 server with quad processors, 4 gigs of ram, and 3 raid
configurations with about 200 gb of hd space that's basically being used
to run a 2 gb database for about 20 users that will never grow. My boss
thinks we should move our exchange 5.5 server (about 120 users) to this
box (going to Exchange 2000 in a few months) because it's not being
utilized fully. Other than the "if we lose SQL we lose Exchange" theory,
why else is this a bad idea? Thanks in advance, Scott.

We use it in conjunction with a third party app and it runs pretty well.
Every once in a while it brings my server to a crawl and a stop and start

I too will be there. Any words of advice for first time attendees? I

RE: Host Unreachable

2002-03-26 Thread Scott Force

For archive purposes, it was a DNS issue. ISP had new DNS server info,
this did the trick. Thanks, Scott.

Host Unreachable

2002-03-26 Thread Scott Force

Good Morning,
 I'm running Exchange 5.5/4 (NT4.0/6a). I'm having problems sending
e-mail to a specific domain, spectra.ca or spectraesolutions.com. Any
e-mail to those domains sits in my IMS outbound queue. They can send to
me but when I reply I run into the same problem. I've contacted the admin
of that domain and he told me they are running Exchange 2000 and they are
not requiring reverse DNS lookup. Any thoughts?

RPC Problems?

2001-10-29 Thread Scott Force

Exchange 5.5/4 on NT 4.0/6a.

I recently started having problems with mail messages getting stuck in our
users (about 100) outboxes for a minute or two, then being sent. Clients
are using Outlook 98, 2000 and 2002 and the symtoms are the same for all.
After a fresh reboot of the server the problem goes away temporarily but
as the day goes on, the message delivery time gets longer and longer.

I've checked the archives and read past posts on this issue and the
recommended solutions point to AV issues or RPC issues. I've gone as far
as uninstalling our AV software on the server and running a test and the
problem still persists. (I stopped the IMS and no users were on the
system). From what I've read on the RPC side that's only a problem if the
messages aren't leaving the outbox at all. Is this true?

It doesn't matter if the recipient is part of the GAL or the message is to
be routed through the IMS, they all hang. I've also noticed that my
server is hanging at the Windows NT screen upon reboot. Any suggestions?
