RE: Outlook 2003 - Bookmark Not Valid

2004-01-08 Thread Ward, Stuart
I have the same problem using 2003 Server, 2003 Exchange but with no 5.5's
in the mix. Does not appear to have anything to do with Outlook version -
tried 2000 and 2003. I'm using XP as my client machine.

I have the above plus a DC in a test environment and posted the info a while
back. Unfortunately there were no responses, so have been trying to
troubleshoot for a while now on-and-off.

Subject: Outlook 2003 - Bookmark Not Valid

I was wondering if anyone had seen this before:

This is a new 2003 Server with Exchange 2003 - setup with the ADC to an
Exchange 5.5 SP4 - NT 4.0 SP6a server for migration.

When you migrate an account or create one onto the new server (E2003)
outlook complains that the "bookmark is not valid" when you try and create
the profile in outlook. Also, when you migrate someone you may not see
that error unless you try and access the GAL. Is this an AD problem? I am
not sure where to begin troubleshooting it.

Any help is appreciated.

Happy New Year All.

Just a quick question for the new year. I am running exchange 5.5 on an NT
Server , i know i am upgrading soon 8-)

Ok, I have 2 offices A and B, A being head office. Both are connected via
site connector. Now Office B has been shut down and the server is now
offline. I have one member of staff from office B moving to Office A, but my
problem is, exchange in office A can still see all the accounts that was in
office B. I am unable to modify or delete these accounts becuase exchange
that was in office b is down.

Is there any way i can delete the acconts that were in office B from being
shown and used on the exchange server at head office.

thanks for your time

Hi guys,

Will be gratefull if you can contribute to this please.

I have an Exchange 5.5, sp4 server on win 2k with sp4.

In my Dell Power Edge 2400, i have two scsi disks
(0&1) within this exchange server. Disk 1 has 3 18g hds with a logical drive
of G.

G contains Exchsrvr folder which hosts priv.edb and pub.edb.  its like
g:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\ and the two edb files.

Now, G is near capacity and would like to upgrade it to bigger space.

I have purchased two 36gb hd from Dell (based on Dell's advise), and ready
to be backing up the G drive and the rest.

I would like you to feel free to suggest any tips and tricks that u know

exch 5.5 w/sp4

First let me say i am sorry, cause i keep comming back and asking this. I
MUST be missing something or just plai stupid, time to quit and go flip
burgers. We have a mail server that is 5.5 smtp bridgehead ( 12.10.133.30 )
and in routing restrictions have hosts and clients checked.

Using the following test http://members.iinet.net.au/~remmie/relay/ when i
send it to myself [EMAIL PROTECTED] it WORKS and the email gets to me with
the following...

<<< 220 postoffice02.aruplab.com ESMTP Server (Microsoft Exchange Internet
Mail Service 5.5.2653.13) ready
 HELO staff.iinet.net.au
<<< 250 OK

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 MAIL FROM:
<<< 250 OK - mail from
 RCPT TO:
<<< 250 OK - Recipient
 DATA
<<< 354 Send data. End with CRLF.CRLF
 MESSAGE
<<< 250 OK
SUCCESS

Relay Accepted - final response code 250

Now if i change the TO address to a generic [EMAIL PROTECTED] address that I
have setup, some other smtp recipent then my own it fails 5 times then
suddenly works on the 6th, however the mail doesnt ever deliver. per the
follwing...

+5 of these

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
<<< 250 OK - Reset
 MAIL FROM:
<<< 250 OK - mail from
 RCPT TO:
<<< 550 Relaying is prohibited

 RCPT TO:
<<< 250 OK - Recipient
 DATA
<<< 354 Send data. End with CRLF.CRLF
 MESSAGE
<<< 250 OK
SUCCESS

In senario 2 I dont see how it can do a RCPT TO: and 550 - to - RCPT TO: 250
OK - Recipent. SO I AM CONFUSED ALL TO HELL. Is it like "try this five
times and on six it will work? And even if in senario 2 sending it to
another server it never delivers doesnt it still sit on my server and eat up
cpu/memory/disk?

In senario 1 if the message is "relayed" to my server and to my clients it
works right off the bat??!! i dont see how that is denying relaying?
Doesnt that just open a huge window for asia-pacifica to spam my clients?
Is there a way to plug this?

sorry but i've made this so complex in my head it hurts.

much thanks

We've been using Spamassassin for several months now. For being free it
really does help out. We haven't updated to the latest version and I'm sure
that has limited its effectiveness. It really isn't hard to configure and
there is some excellent documentation available on the web.

Subject: SPAM filtering on a budget

Hello list,
I know SPAM filtering products have been covered in great detail but I'm
having problems finding a good gateway SPAM filtering product that's not
going to cost me a lot of money. I have a small organization of about
100 users. The products that I have found that are reasonably priced
are Xwall ($360.00) and SpamAssassin (free). My problem with
SpamAssassin is that I don't know the first thing about Linux so that's
out of the question. Xwall seems like a good product but I want a few
more to compare. My budget won't allow for more than about $800.00.
What cheep products are you using. Good/Bad experiences. Any help with
my product search would be great.

Thanks

Matt

Would exmerge have removed it from the dumpster too and achieved the same

Nope your wrong, you can recover items from the dumpster on Exchange even if
you shift delete. Do a search for dumpsteralwayson on Microsoft website.
This is a reg key that can be added to retrieve items from any folder. It is
retrospective.

Running Exchange 5.5. We have a situation in our
company where people need to mail files to each other
on a regular basis. We have mailboxes in excess of
500mb. IS there any way to manage attachements better.
We do not want to tell people not to use them. We do
not want to block them. If one user sends a 5mb file
to 5 users this will take 30 mb of space on the
exchange server (5X5+5 for the sender in sent items).
This is an AWFULL lot of redundancy in the database.

IS there any way to manage this better? We tried
public folders but this just moves the files from one
database to another in Exchange 5.5.

TIA

Subject: I've been searching Usenet and MSTechnet with no reference to
this problem

I'm new to the list, so I apologize if this problem has been a topic of
discussion before. I've searched everywhere and haven't found anything.

Ok, here's the deal!
Problem: certain users cannot see any more than 15 or so "all Day" items
in
a specific Public Calendar.

I have a Public Calendar (calendar folder in the public folders)

Several users who cannot see more than 15 "all day" items on any given
day
in this calendar.

Exchange2k
Outlook2000 & 2002
windows2k
current service packs

They can, however, see all items if they use OWA

I can, from my laptop using Outlook2002 create a profile for the user
with
the problem, log on with them using their userID and their Password, and
see
all of the items.

What I have done so far on the troubled users computer:

upgraded client from outlook2000 - 2002
ran outlook /cleanfreebusy /cleanreminders /cleanviews
removed and recreated the profile
tried using different views to view the calendar
changed the screen resolution

What I have done on the back end:
Moved users mailbox from one Exchange server to another
removed any replicas that existed with other servers

I am completely out of ideas

Please help

I put SP4 on my W2K/E2K Exchange box last night, and it seems to have
broken some functionality, remote users who connect via VPN are unable
to connect, and some users cannot view HTML messages. Anyone come
across similar behavior?

Yes, but it makes upgrading to E2K a bit more problematic.

Is there a way under Exchange 5.5 to have a DL which only works for
people in the org and will not work when coming from the outside world?
My management doesn't want a certain DL to be used from an outside
source...like an ex-employee for example...they need it to work for the
people in the office or those connected via vpn but not from the
outside. Thanks,

OK everyone here it is...the fix.

As you veteran networkers probably detected right of the bat is...it is a
DNS problem.

Seems the ISP has not delgated our DNS to the gaining ISP.

So, when I sent an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] my local sever thought
the mail was a relay, hence the " cannot relay through this machine"
message.

To fix the problem, I have to add an email address to my user on the
exchange 2k server that looked like this [EMAIL PROTECTED] (however, I
think I can replace that with the dns name and be just fine). This allowed
the mail to come straight into my server from public.

Does this concern anyone?

We will have to wait until I get all of the users "forwarded" to their new
@ipaddress before we can delegate to the ISP and then I can forward all of
their mail back to them from the old account. Unless someone knows of a way
to make unix send mail pit this all out automatcally.

Thanks for all of the replies to help sovle this. Especially to Ben for the
"think it again" posting.

Sometimes users get sent legitimate executables, they get blocked because of
the extention, so I have to copy it to a share for them to retrieve it - I'm
then reliant on the AV on my desktop, what I'd prefer is for the virus
checker to say "is it infected" before it looks at whether it should
quarantine that sort of file.

Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way, but that's just how I'd like it to
work - in fairness with 3.81 they're most of the way there with the
integrated quarantine manager section.

No problems here with 3.81 - one thing I wish it did do was to scan
attachments blocked by extention blocking - we've had loads of bugbears
quarantined for being .exe's , but it doesn't seem to actually scan them as
well.

Subject: Bandwidth Help

Group,

I am having some problem with my Exchange server using way too much
bandwidth. I have been using Exchange 5.5 sp4 with my Windows 2000
server, I just recently upgraded to Exchange server 2000. Now my other
computers on the network cannot download anything. They can still surf
the web but all download go so long and the stop. I have a 512
connection to the internet via cable. I have tried several routers with
the same problems. The cable company told me that my connection was fine
and they could not support me any further since I am using a router.

I have set the exchange server to only relay from the five computers on
my LAN and they user would have to be authenticated by there server
before they could relay to the SMTP VS. Any other thoughts would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason

P.S. Does anyone know what it means to get Outlook Express messages in
all of their shared folders on the networkthanks.

None of the Antivirus vendors appear to have anything other than CA which

I have searched Google and am continuing to look around

Greetings:

I am having some inconsistencies in the option to "Delete Exchange
Attributes" showing up in ADU&C snap in, sometimes it does, sometimes it
doesn't.

I am running WIN2K SP2 and E2KSP2 and making sure that the "Advance
Features" is selected under view as described at
"http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;307350";.

Anyone have any suggestions or has run into the same issue.

Thanks

RE: Mailing Lists

Do what you're doing but create a hidden distribution list with no
recipients with alias as appropriate. Add the 'Billings Update' SMTP
address to it.

Subject: Mailing Lists

Hi all

We send out lots of documents and emails to clients. Many of these are
constructed in the form of Distribution Lists. I am want to make sure that
none of the clients is aware of who else is receiving these emails at the
sametime as its sent to them. Many of these clients are competitors and
would rather others are not aware when they recieve there documents and so
on.

And so I have been sending the mail recently by just putting the DL alias
name into BCC and sending messages that way. This works fine. However, I was
just wodering if there is another way to do this. Another way that will
allow you to have a generic message group name displayed in the TO: field
when the clients receive their emails. Something like like "Billings Update"
for instance. Much like what you get when you receive a message from this
forum.

Right now when I BCC the DL list nothing is shown in the To field. Any
ideas?. Any feedback is much appreciated.

Mustafa

RE: netsvc to stop SA

2002-07-24 Thread Ward, Stuart

Tried to stop them by stopping System Attendant or by dependent services in
order, so:

Event
IMS
News
IS
MTA
Dir
SA

Doing it manually on the server with 'net' works both ways. The logged in
account on the remote NT4 box is in Domain Admins and Domain Admins is in
local admin group of the Exchange server.

I get no error messages, it just doesn't stop them - The Event, IMS and News
do stop then nothing else. Is there a timeout issue here waiting for the
dependent service to stop?

What am I missing? I am trying to use netsvc to stop Exchange services from

the services in order or use just MSExchangeSA.

syntax is simple as far as I can see:

netsvc MSExchangeSA \\servername /stop

or

netsvc "Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service" \\servername /stop

Any help is appreciated.

now there is "an internal user" to "send email to a single internal

Make up your mind and re-state the question please.

Not according to Webster Dictionary

"One entry found for authorise.
 British variant of AUTHORIZE"

As opposed to "authorize" - which does not refer to "authorise" at all.
Must be some sort of British slang or something :=)

RE: kinda OT - RAID on the exchange server

2002-05-31 Thread Ward, Stuart

We had a similar issue last year with our Dell box not recreating the array
correctly after corruption/death of hard disk - all sorts of issues with
firmware level etc. Had to kill it, recreate and restore...fine since.

Mark my 2 cent's is It would seem to me that you have some type of problem
with the hardware it self either controller or possibly hard drives, likely
the raid controller.

(I had this happen)
For example/usually.. if say your had 3 disks in a raid5.
One dies/dead gone the two are left running (critical mode)
so you know which is dead, assume hot swap here, you pull it.
You put in new "identical" drive.
NowDepending on how your particular hardware works and the way it was
setup.
the raid controller will likely (if setup this way) start the rebuild
process on the new drive thus in a matter of time the new drive is back in
the array, thus you are now back to being fault tolerant. It should be
transparent.

Now in my case I have setup my raid 5 arrays, to automatically rebuild, AND
it my controllers case it can prioritize how quickly it does this, thus
determining to "drag" on the system during rebuild.

Thus I can pull the old dead drive, put in the new one and it does all the
rebuild in the background.
How long? depends on lot of things.

I had a similar hardware issues once, it ended up being a over heating
issues on the drives, dues to poor case design. Moved HD's to better case
with proper cooling, has run like charm ever since.

Subject: kinda OT - RAID on the exchange server

I apologise for the OT question...

Has anyone experienced issues with bad striping on a RAID5e disk array?
(hardware RAID)

I have had this twice in the last 6 months. When a disk dies in the array it
is replaced ASAP. RAID5e should be able to handle this without error right?

When the RAID5e striping has errors, it registers sectors on the logical
disk as bad and causes disk I/O errors - which screws (eventually corrupts)
the exchange information store(s) on the logical drive and prevents backups
from completing.

hhhmmm ... perhaps someone can enlighten me as to why RAID5e couldn't handle
the occassional defunct drive without screwing the rest of the array in the
process of rebuilding itself...

The hardware vendor has recommended re-creating the RAID array from scratch
and restoring from backup

Any thoughts?

sorry again for the OT question - but I'll even throw in a Friday afternoon
Haiku for good measure:

Slow open of messages with attachments

2002-01-31 Thread Ward, Stuart

All

We are experiencing some issues with opening emails containing attachments
with the size of attachment not appearing to make a difference. When a user
clicks on the message to open it or even preview it on machines that we
allow preview pane, it can take 5 seconds or more to actually bring up the
message.

I do not appear to be able to find anything in the archives or on TechNet
and would appreciate it if anyone has seen anything similar and is able to
shed any light on the matter.

I don't think this is a full time job. If you have a full time
position just for A/V, you'd have to have a backup person since viruses
do not take any vacation. Instead of having full time position, pay
A/V vendor to notify you (& other support staffs) when there's new virus
via pager, cell phone, email, etc. If you want to have closer
relationship with A/V vendor, pay more money to have someone like
Technical Account Manager, TAM. Once you have those communcation method
established, you have to have software that can distribute updates
automatically and fast.

My two cents...

Just curious what some of the Exchange Admins think. Would you consider
Antivirus a full time job? I speak for both email and network/desktop.

Around here it isn't, although we wish it was cause it seems to be
getting neglected. We are around 1300 users right now.
