At the "network ID" (Alias) prompt, ask him to type in his smtp address
instead, and then enter his userid and password. Any luck after that?

One user is getting the above error message after logging on to OWA and
entering the Network ID and Password information. He gets the message when
accessing OWA from both work and home.

I have found various articles that talk about permissions on the WinNT and
exchsrvr\* directories but the permissions appear to be ok. I checked other
users and they connect fine as do I.

Any of your users using Outlook 2003? If so, there's a patch...

I had this exact same problem and this fixed it. I haven't had to restart

Weird problem...I'm running Exchange 5.5 sp4 on Win2k sp4 in a Win2k Ad
domain. For about a month now when a user tries to log on to OWA they will
experience a hangup in the service. Specifcally, the user can get to the 1st
logon screen, enter their alias...and then enter their logon/password in the
subsequent pop-up box but the actual screen to see their mail will not be
displayed. It will just sit there on the first page and not go any further.
No errors...No "page cannot be displayed"...nothing! I've seen the problem
happen on xp,2k, even on the server itself. Giving IIS a restart solves the
problem for a day or two and then it will happen again. I checked the event
logs and don't see anything pertaining to IIS or Exchange except messages
saying the service was stopped (of course it does since I'm the one who
stops it!). Can anyone give me an idea on how to tackle this one? Or is
this more of an IIS issue rather than an OWA issue...?

RE: Exch 5.5 Routing Question

2003-10-30 Thread Woods, Tony
Ok, thanks. So according to mine, it looks like I have the redundancy.
There's two entries for each site but I just noticed that the MTA Properties
on my server show to 'Only use least cost routes'. With that enabled, it
wouldn't even try the other connector if our link was down now would it? I
un-ticked it but I guess the only way to test is to wait for a failure [:-)

Hello,

Exchange 5.5 SP4 on W2K SP4 boxes. 1 ORG, 3 Sites (A, B, C) in three
different cities across N.A.

I have 2 x400 connectors setup in each location. Each site is setup the same
in that they all have two x400 connectors, each going to one of the other
sites. If the VPN link between Site A and Site C goes down and site C is
trying to send mail to Site A, will Site C route it's mail through Site B to
get to Site A? If not, how can I make this so? Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

RE: SPAM filtering on a budget

2003-10-28 Thread Woods, Tony
I had a budget to work with, did all kinds of research until I found out we
had the Enterprise License for SAV products... This meant that I was already
licensed for SAV for SMTP Gateways, which does SPAM, Attachaments, virus
scanning, subject blocking and DNSBL's too. My point being that maybe you're
already licensed for a product and don't know it... Just a thought

Hello list,
I know SPAM filtering products have been covered in great detail but I'm
having problems finding a good gateway SPAM filtering product that's not
going to cost me a lot of money. I have a small organization of about 100
users. The products that I have found that are reasonably priced are Xwall
($360.00) and SpamAssassin (free). My problem with SpamAssassin is that I
don't know the first thing about Linux so that's out of the question. Xwall
seems like a good product but I want a few more to compare. My budget won't
allow for more than about $800.00. What cheep products are you using.
Good/Bad experiences. Any help with my product search would be great.

Thanks

Matt

Hello,

I have a lot of .stf files being created in the C:\exchsrvr\mdbdata dir.
Anyone know what is causing this? The only change is that as of this am, I
now have SAV SMTP for Gateways in front of our box accepting and delivering
email for the @moneymart.ca domain. The IMS on my exchange box also forwards
all mail to it instead of 'using DNS'. Can these files be deleted? I found
KB 217155 but my versions of files they list are newer so I'm not sure where

RE: Forcing IMS

2003-10-21 Thread Woods, Tony
Thanks for the reply, Ed.

So I only have two available external IP's. One for Exchange, one for the
SPAM filter. I have users in the field using the Exchange external IP DNS
name for their incoming and outgoing server settings (mail.moneymart.ca).
Without making a huge change to the clients in the field, I'm not sure I
have many options. So maybe I'll just kill the second MX record until I can
get a third IP... This way the users in the field can still send outgoing
via the DNS entry they have. Will this effect reverse lookups? The Exchange
box is set to send mail via DNS instead of through the SPAM box still.

Thanks.

Don't point the failover to your Exchange server.

Instead, point the failover MX to a Windows 2003 SMTP Service that relays
messages to your spam box. If the spam box goes down, this box will accept
the mail and queue it up until the spam box is on line.

Or just depend on everyone to retry for two days, which is the norm.

Hi,

I have a user who's icon's never change when they forward or reply to the
email message. When a new one comes in, it's the envelope. When she opens
it, it becomes the opened envelope. But if she replies, it never changes to
show the purple arrow. If she forwards, it never changes to show the blue
arrow for forward. The envelope always remains the same. I've tried creating
a new profile with the same results. I've added my own profile with the same
results. Has a nyone else seen this behaviour before?

You have to turn off scan compressed, also if you password protect a zip,
then again another setting is to turf encrypted files, turn off that too. Or
go with RAR, I don't think NAV can read RAR's :)

Hello, Exchange 5.5 SP4 on mix of NT 4 and w2k boxes.

I recently put the reg tweaks in for Martin's List of Danger attachments
using NAV 2.x for Exchange and have noticed that even though a ZIP file is
not listed in my list, the .exe's and .bat's...etc inside them are getting
quarantined. This is really pissing off my software developers. Now I know
this is because I've got it set to scan within compressed attachments but
I'm wondering if either I'm missing an extra reg key so that it ignores them
(if they're not viral) or is there something else I'm not aware of that I
can do. If it's all I can do, then I don't mind going to battle with them
for it but I thought I would ask the group first.

And this setting within the registry is specific to NAV? If so, I'll start
searching on their site for this key. Thanks to both so far...

Well also you have to set in the registry not to turf encrypted files (or
something of that nature). I know for some areas, if they can't scan a zip,
it is turfed, that feature has to be disabled if you password protect a ZIP.

That is the nature of it. I don't belief that NAV checks the mime time so an
option would be to rename them i.e. .ex_ .ba_ etc. The other option is to
password protect the Zip files and then they will not be scanned.

Just wondering if anyone in the group can recommend a piece of software to

need to run with Exchange but I'm just looking for what others are using and
if they're happy with it.

Event ID 41's over and over

2003-08-25 Thread Woods, Tony
Hi all, Exchange 5.5 SP4 on W2K SP3.

Every 10 seconds and up to every 2mins I get the following entry in the
Application Event Log:

ID: 41
Source: MSExchangeDSExp

Starting the directory export.

And then one second later...

ID: 38
Source: MSexchangeDSExp

The directory export is complete.

This goes on and on and on...all day, every day. EventID.net turned up a few
hits but to no avail... Same with KB's. Anyone seen this before? I can't go
back to see when it started because it's overwritten the logs. Two things
have changed recently, one is that we now Unified Messaging and there is an
MSS Connector. The other is I just implemented the Attachment Blocking
through NAV. I don't think it's the latter because I put this on 5 different
servers and none of them are experiencing this issue. Any thought's?

Cheers,
Tony

There are a number of usage tracking tools, including some from MessageOne
and Quest, but if all you want is what DL's are getting used, just sub them
to a PF and save the scratch for something more useful.

Now, if you really want an accurate picture of mail flow, talk to MessageOne
or Quest.

RE: Exchange 5.5/Active Directory

2003-07-23 Thread Woods, Tony
If you're doing an inplace upgrade, Exchange will function as normal. You'll
want to do some research on the ADC...etc

Hello All.

We are going to upgrade our NT domain to AD next week. Currently I run
Exchange 5.5 sp4. How will Exchange 5.5 run in an AD environment? How will
it authenticate when the PDC is upgraded to AD?

Thanks

Samantha

RE: OWA Error

2003-07-23 Thread Woods, Tony
Alright, cool so that worked. Kinda bites because that's one of our Account
Policies that was set by our security committee so I'll take this one back
to them. Thanks again.

Well at least now I know what the error means. We do have account policies
that require a password age of minimum set to 1 day. I'll change it and give
it a shot. Where did you find that out and thanks for it!

After some further research, the -2147023569 means
ERROR_ACCOUNT_RESTRICTION. I'd be thinking that there is some problem with
account policies. Check to see if your minimum password age is set to 1 day
(or greater). If it is, change it to 0 and see if it resolves the issue.

RE: OWA Error

Not too sure what you mean with regards to Exchange 5.5. I know what you're
saying but can this be setup for 5.5? I hadn't read anything that said it
could...

Thanks

Think "smtp address" instead of UPN and it isn't.

Hi again,

Exchange 5.5 SP4 on W2K SP3.
Now that I've sorted out the Change Password option, it's returning an error
when you submit. I fill in the info for Domain, Account, old, new and
confirm passwords and it says "Error number: -2147023569 ". Then there's a
link that says 'Back' so that you can try again. Anyone seen this error
before? A search on Google and KB's returned nothing...

RE: POP3 Broken?

2003-07-09 Thread Woods, Tony
Hi Chris,

Just got this resoloved... After having another cisco admin take a look,
there was no mapping for port 110 on the outside to the inside for the
server the houses some of the mailboxes that needed it. All fixed up now
Love that second opinion [;-)

Tony

If you telnet to port 110 on the localhost where your mailbox resides can
you connect? To the netbios name? To the IP? Is mail.dfg.com a FE server for
your 5.5 environment or the mailbox server itself (i.e. Should you expect it
to be listening)?

Hello,

Exchange 5.5 SP3 on NT 4 SP6a
I've just found out that POP3 doesn't work on my dfg.com domain. From the
command line, internally, I type " telnet mail.dfg.com 110" it just sits
there and hangs. Alternatively, if I do the same for mail.moneymart.ca, it
connects immediately. Again, this is internally so there isn't a firewall or
anything blocking it. I've compared Protocol properties for both sites and
they are the same. Any ideas where to begin?

Your mail system is accepting a mail for an invalid address (i.e.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]), and since it couldn't deliver it it's trying to send a
message back to the sender telling them it couldn't deliver the message. But
in this case, the spammer forged the sender address, so your mail server is
sending you NDRs because it can't send the original NDR back to the spoofed
address. Make sense? There's not much you can do with Exchange 5.5 to
avoid this situation unless the spammer is using a single IP address that
you can block from being able to send mail into your system.

Thanks. I've also cut down the Notifications to just 'Host not Found'.

One of the NDR's looks like this

Is this is a Relay, shouldn't I not be accepting it in the first place?

Thanks for all the insight so far...

Tony,

Open up the properties page of your IMS Connection, go to the Internet Mail
tab and click on the Notifications... button. My guess would be that you
have the "Always send notifications when non-delivery reports are generated"
radio button clicked. If that is the case, select the second choice and
uncheck the options that you don't want.

I receive anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000 ndrs a day, from spammers trying to
brute force their spam through the system. I track the NDRs to create a
spreadsheet for management, showing them the exponential growth of spam and
the load it is placing on the servers, in order to justify new servers.

For #3, what you are seeing is spammer trying to find valid addresses
@dfg.com by simply guessing addresses and trying them, your best bet would
be to turn off the notification on your IMS for "E-mail address could not be
found". For #2, yes they will sit in the queue until they are delivered or
just time out. For #1, are you sure you're not an open relay? See

spreadsheet for management, showing them the exponential growth of spam and
the load it is placing on the servers, in order to justify new servers.

I've tested via telnet and from home using Outlook Express and it always
replies with 550 so I think I'm good there. Just the amount of mail is
insane. I came in this morning at there's over 10,000 in the IMS Queue. I
guess eventually it will slow down...

Thanks to all.

See

Hi John,

Is this in response to my question #3? If so, does everyone receive over
2000 messages every hour in the 'Admin' mailbox with a subject line of
'Notification: Inbound Mail Failure"? I understand getting some but over
2000 an hour? Each of these messages is addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
whatever. It's just random letters in front of the domain name @dfg.com and
there's just a ton of them. Thanks for any ideas, all.

Cheers,

Hello,

NT 4 SP6a and Exchange 5.5 SP4. Domain in question is DFG.com

I've just taken over a site's Exchange server and have noticed something
strange. It's been sometime since I had to play with Exchange this deep but
the Queues on my IMS keep filling up with 1000's of emails. We're not an
Open Relay that I can tell (I've tested) but there's just a ton of 'Outbound
Message Awaiting Delivery' with originator <> and Destination Host of
different .com's. There is a ton of Inbound Mail Failures in the 'Admin'
mailbox for delivery failures as well. My three questions are:

1) Are these messages that are trying to relay but failing?

2) If so, are they just going to sit in the Queue for the default time?

3) For the Inbound Mail Failures, a lot of them are going to bogus
addresses like [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] Where are these all coming
from?

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Free/busy error

Hello everyone,
We are currently running Exchange 5.5 with SP4. One of my user who is
running outlook 2000 has a problem retreiving her free/busy information. To
be specific, when she looks for other users availability on the meeting
calendar, everything seems to be fine. But if sometimes is looking for her
availability on the calendar or if they try to schedule a meeting for her,
then they are getting a message saying "No information. No free/busy
information could be retrieved". Can anyone help with this please? I
couldn't find any information regarding this no where. I tried recreating
her mail box and still she has the same problem. Please help. Any tip is
welcome. Thanks.

Groupshield blocked my exe's in forms...

2002-04-08 Thread Woods, Tony G AG:EX

Hi all,

This is a post on behalf of a friend. Any help would be most appreciated.
~
I recently upgraded to Exchange 2000 and installed McAfee Groupshield
version 5.1.0. It was my practice with the old Groupshield to block exe
attachments and I set the new version to do the same. What happened was it
blocked the exe's for my public folder forms from being downloaded and
replaced them with its own replaced.txt files. I have dealt with the issue
of the exe's being blocked, now my problem is replacing the replaced.txt
files with the original exe's. Now when someone tries to run a form they
download the replaced.txt file to their local cache instead of the original
exe. My question is : Is there a way for me to manually place the exe's
where the files are downloaded from to the local cache? I was able to fix
the ones that I have the original cfg files for, but I am missing about 4
cfgs. I have the exe's that were replaced, but I don't know where to put
them or how to put them there. Thanks in advance for any help you can
provide.

Tony

Migrating Netscape Mail to Exchange

2001-11-02 Thread Woods, Tony G AG:EX

Hi all,

We are in the process of planning the migration to Exchange 5.5 from
Netscape Mail 4.7. I'm wondering what processes there might be to getting
their old mail onto the Exchange server, besides getting it into Outlook
Express and then importing that into Outlook 2002. We know we can add the
IMAP service as well in Outlook but there's still the drag and drop process
for getting it onto the Exchange box. Anyone done this before or have some
pointers to links on the web?

Cheers,
Tony
