RE: Changing service account passwords

2001-12-14 Thread Aarts, Jan

Think about changing the account before resetting the password.
There is a Q-article how to create a new exchange service account. If you
do this in a controlled way you should not have any trouble.
Then you decide to remove or modify the old exchange account.

Jan

Exchange 5.5 sp4+ W2K (multisite, 35 servers worldwide)

All,

I'm starting the legwork for this project. Talked to MS already but they
don't see beyond Exchange. (simple, just change it and let it replicate)

I've inherited a very old and mismanaged system. Everyone knows the service
account and it probably used in a variety of differant ways attaching to the
Exchange system.

Does anyone know of any utilites to interrogate where and how the service
account is being used. I know this can be a horror show so I want to make
sure I have as many bases covered as possible.

Thanks
Greg

The article also states it is not supported in a multi-server environment.
It can be done, but it's very tricky.

RE: Changing service account passwords

2001-12-13 Thread Soysal, Serdar

Actually any calls you receive after the change are people who shouldn't be
using it in the first place. However, Brent may be right. In such a
widespread deployment like that, it may be impossible to track everything
down. After you change the password, not only you'll get calls, but your
service account will start locking up. My advice is, read the related
Technet articles thoroughly to understand the consequences of what you're
doing, prepare for the change, do it in just one site with preferrably a
single server as a pilot and then change the account everywhere. After
everything is working with the new account, remove all rights of the old
service account. If anyone complains that they don't have the level of
access that they used to have, tell them to pound sand ... Ahem I mean
work with them to determine the exact rights they need.

Okay, I'll rephrase. You'd be foolish to attempt it given that it's not
even a recommended process in a single server/single site environment
and MS has documented that the only workaround in multi-server/site
environments is a complete reinstall. Is that a bit more accurate? G

It might be a good exercise in the exploration of pain tolerance though.

It might also be good plan if you enjoy standing on the down-wind side

Just do what MS said and change the password. Look at it this way; it's a
great way for you to document all the non-Exchange and non-authorized uses
of that account. Exchange will take care of itself leaving only the rest of

Sure, that make goods sense to me but I keep hearing about lockup and
that
Exchange will fail to run. I guess what I don't understand is how this
would
happen? If there is no password lockout set, what is the problem? Right?

Just do what MS said and change the password. Look at it this way; it's a
great way for you to document all the non-Exchange and non-authorized uses
of that account. Exchange will take care of itself leaving only the rest
of
the world to complain that they can no long log in. Then you can clean it
 up.

  Exchange 5.5 sp4+ W2K (multisite, 35 servers worldwide)

  All,

I'm starting the legwork for this project. Talked to MS already but
they don't see beyond Exchange. (simple, just change it and let it
  replicate)

I've inherited a very old and mismanaged system. Everyone knows the
 service
account and it probably used in a variety of differant ways attaching
  to
 the
  Exchange system.

Does anyone know of any utilites to interrogate where and how the
service account is being used. I know this can be a horror show so I
want to make sure I have as many bases covered as possible.

  Thanks
  Greg

Thanks for the tip.

RE: Changing service account passwords

2001-12-13 Thread John Matteson

You can change the Service Account password, in a multi server/multi site
org.

I've done it a few times on very short notice.

You can make the change by changing the password in the site container when
connected to a server in the site. Or you can use a third party product like
SERVICE ACCOUNT MANAGER to make it a one shot change.

You can't change it in a multi-server/multi-site implementation.

Why not just change the service account?

.. I bet the previous admin used his account or the administrator
one...( hehe..been there)
..just wait until you change it.. the calls!
