A. HP Netserver LH 3000. PIII. 1GHZ. 1.128GB RAM. RAID 5.
B. Can I just disable the setting in the backend (on the configuration for
front end)?
Lets said, OWA. Can I disable the OWA Setting in Backend for OWA Logging in
FrontEnd.. and redirect back the OWA Logging in Backend?

Hi,

On the progress to upgrade Exchange5.5Win4.0 to Ex2K2K. So would like
take some consideration on the Front End Server. We would like the Front
End Server to work on these :-

1. Spam Filtering
2. NAV Exchange Scanning
3. Mail Relay
4. OWA Logging

A. Do you guys think all this work on one server will be very burden to
the server? B. If my Front End Server down, (OWA Logging,Mail Relay,NAV)
should be able to redirect to the backend right?

RE: Front end Server

2003-02-06 Thread Roger Seielstad
No, a trihomed host in your DMZ is rarely a good option for anything.

Set the ISA box up in just the DMZ, and write your firewall rules to allow
inbound connections from the internet to the ISA box on port 443 (https)
only, and then from the ISA box to your front end servers on the internal
network.

I have been looking at some technet articles about a trihomed ISA

 Thanks for all the ideas.

RE: Front end Server

If security is your goal use an ISA Server. FE Exchange Servers are not
security devices, contrary to what you may have been told.

To keep the BE server secure ( do not want to open the OWA ports to
users who are not using VPN and dialup). Also we have a document
management software (imanage) which could be integrated to Outlook.
Since the users access the Imanage web portal via the web, they could
access their email also via owa (secured with SSL).
Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Dear All,

I am in the process of building a Front End server(Exchange 2000

workstation class machine with Pentium 4, 1.80GHz CPU with a 36GB HDD is

Will this box be able to handle this load or do I need a Server class

RE: Front end Server

2003-02-05 Thread Ken Cornetet
We considered doing this, but in the end decided to go with a dedicated
proxy appliance box.

Reasons?

1. Less holes in the firewalls. SSL from the internet, and HTTP to our
existing FE server.
2. The cost of the proxy appliance was comparable to server hardware +
E2K enterprise.
3. Dedicated appliance box was deemed to be more secure than IIS/Win2K.
4. The proxy box could be used to publish some of our other internal
apps to the Internet.
5. Proxy box can do the SSL encryption/decryption. Could theoretically
do load balancing too.

If you want to stick with Microsoft apps, you can put ISA server on a
stand-alone win2k server (no domain) in the DMZ. According to our MS
technical contact, this is actually the recommended way of putting OWA
on the Internet.

You are getting into the deep end now but simply:
Yes, put ISA in a DMZ.
Use FE Servers for protocol load balancing and put them inside with the
Exchange Servers. Use ISA to publish Exchange resources for controlled
access from outside.
This architecture involves much more than Exchange.

To keep the BE server secure ( do not want to open the OWA ports to

management software (imanage) which could be integrated to Outlook.
Since the users access the Imanage web portal via the web, they could
access their email also via owa (secured with SSL).
Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Dear All,

I am in the process of building a Front End server(Exchange 2000
enterprise sp3, to be placed in the DMZ, just for OWA. An IBM
workstation class machine with Pentium 4, 1.80GHz CPU with a 36GB HDD is
being used for this purpose. I am not expecting more that 20-25
concurrent connections to this box at any given time.
Will this box be able to handle this load or do I need a Server class
machine?

Exchange 2000 enterprise sp3, windows 2000 server sp

As always I appreciate all your input.

If you have only one Exchange back-end server, then that could well be a
fine idea. One advantage to a front-end server or a
network-load-balanced team of them is that you can have a single URL for
all users that won't redirect to the proper back-end server. That makes
firewall mapping easier.

Is it possible to use an Ex 2000 front end server to proxy POP/IMAP
 connections
to an Ex 5.5 back end (all servers in the same site/admin group/routing
 group)?
Our tests suggest no, but if there is a way it would be really useful to
 us.

OK, that's what I wanted to hear. I haven't tried this yet myself,
and wasn't sure if it was a known issue. My colleague did open a
support call, and hopefully we'll know soon if it is environment
specific or an architecture issue.

Thanks David for your responses.

RE: Front-end server problem

2002-01-06 Thread David Lemson

Here are the facts:

- The setting on an Exchange server This is a Front End Server in ESM
has no effect on SMTP. It only affects POP, IMAP, and HTTP. The design
of Exchange is that all Exchange servers are inbound servers for SMTP.
Outbound SMTP is controlled via SMTP Connectors.

- Some people have asked for the ability to run Front Ends without
information stores on them, in order to reduce the memory footprint,
etc. As far as I know, this is not supported in the current version of
Exchange 2000.

- Separate from the fact above, the SMTP Service does need an
information store to be mounted in order to generate delivery status
notifications (even if there is no mailbox delivery happening on that
server). The reason is that there is some formatting that needs to
happen to the attached message that uses the MIME formatting code
present in the store. If you dismount all mailbox stores on a server
that accepts inbound messages and that server creates a DSN, that DSN
and all subsequent ones will stick in the local delivery queue until a
mailbox store is mounted. In this case, the server doesn't go into a
loop or crash, it's just that all DSNs will stick in the local delivery
queue (which is a bad thing).

I hope this clears it up.

David

Hi all,

I'm about to configure front-end servers for SMTP, but heard some pretty
distressing news about that today. I heard that inetinfo will crash if
the servers have any information stores of them, but since the stores
generate delivery status msgs, you can't have the FE's as SMTP Gateways
or the machine will start establishing TCP connections to itself
indefinitely.

Apparently there are Q articles out about this, but I haven't read them
yet. I was curious to see who has tried to do this out in the field and
what your experience has been like so far.

TIA,

RE: Front-end server problem

If you're referring to Exchange 2000, I wouldn't necessarily create
front-end servers just for SMTP. I'd use the SMTP service that comes
with IIS to relay SMTP. You can use front-end servers for HTTP, IMAP
and POP, though.
