What's generating the errors? And how are you connecting to the destination
system?

I keep getting errors now and then like this one:

Your mail system could not find a way to successfully communicate with the
destination system. Please notify your administrator.
mail.ocasf.org #5.5.0

I used nslookup on the domain in question and it pulled up the mx recor
correctly. I also telnetted to the mail server on port 25 which made a
successful connection.

the last domain to do this is usaid.gov

We're running Windows 2000 SP2 Exchange 2000 SP1 both in native mode
with AD Integrated DNS.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Folks,

Thanks for the responses, but what I really want to know is
not when the
new plan goes into effect (though that was helpful), but what your
shop's response is/will be. Are you planning to buy the Upgrade

There is an exception to the rule (well maybe not an exception, but I
can't think of the right word) and that is that the Backoffice CAL will
no longer be available after October 1st and you will need to get CAL
'Core' packs which I believe will be more expensive. Backoffice CAL's
were the cheapest way to get EX, SQL NT Cals together.

RE: Exchange Banner editing - Interesting Article on the sercurit y list - here's a summary for those who missed it

2001-08-22 Thread Siegfried Weber

You don't need *any* C/C++ skills to change such a thing. The Microsoft
Visual C++ IDE offers a way to open an .EXE or .DLL file as resource to
change a string compiled into the file.

That's what the discussion is talking about and that's how you could
also change the mailbox warning messages which are stored in mdbres.dll
IIRC.

 All true.

I'd want to play with it just cause I can. We know more about the
script
kiddies than they know about us. Oooo... Netcraft...

It's the hackers I'd worry about, and they could care less what your

 Q:

How do you change the Exchange banner that appears when you telnet to
the
exchange box on port 25?? I have heard that you must hex edit a .dll
but
 do
not know which .dll to edit?? Anyone know??

 A:

 http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q281/2/24.asp in e2k

 5.5

I can speak only for version 5.5:

For port 25, the strings that need to be edited (with something like
 WinHex) are found in /exchsrvr/connect/msexcimc/bin/msexcimc.exe.
For port 110, the strings are in /exchsrvr/bin/store.exe.

As pointed out, you will have to redo the strings after you apply a
service pack. Also, be careful editing store.exe. I strongly
recommend knowledge of C programming for changing the strings since
the printf parameters are found in the strings (i.e. %s, %i). If you
overwrite the first one, you most likely will align a wrong argument
(try printing a long with %s :) in which case the process calls the
 doctor (Watson that is).

 interesting post --

I wouldn't say that. Deception and misinformation has always been
used in the intelligence community as part of their security posture
 enhancement.

Yes, changing banners doesn't make you secure by fixing problems.
Bugs don't go away. But banner grabbing is often done by automated
tools, services (i.e. NetCraft), or individuals. Making it harder for
them to identify your systems does increase security posture. (I
have used this on MS IIS successfully. Netcraft had listed a site as
 running Koyote web server... hehe).

Most of the rest is just noise.

IIRC.

Exchange 2000 indeed offers item-level and also field-level security and
I'm sure it is documented somewhere. The only problem is that there is
no UI to do such stuff and IIRC only the Exchange SDK has a sample
Webapp to mess with item-level security but several people reported

I have used the blackberry on a test basis for 4 months. We installed the
enterprise connector that talked to the exchange boxes. I was able to get my e-mail -
really most functions of outlook - on the device anywhere in the service area. At the
time, office attachements were not supported, I understand that they are going to be
supported in the next version of the software. What was Key for me was that the
information in my e-mail is secure from the device to the enterprise connector. This
device uses a very secure encryption technicque. Allows users that are often away
from thier desk to deal with mail in odd moments. I'd strongly suggest it for any
fairly mobil users.

I thought HP had moved to Exchange 2000 already. I know they are stopping
Openmail support in the next year or so, should be busy time for you
migrating the Openmail deployments. I know one place that sent their
Openmail admins on Exchange 2000 course expecting them to come back and
start deploying in three weeks, unfortunately they hadn't heard about AD ;o)

You don't need *any* C/C++ skills to change such a thing. The Microsoft
Visual C++ IDE offers a way to open an .EXE or .DLL file as resource to
change a string compiled into the file.
That's what the discussion is talking about and that's how you could
also change the mailbox warning messages which are stored in mdbres.dll
IIRC.

2001-08-22 Thread Bendall, Paul

Maybe not a bad approach to migrate Openmail to Exchange 5.5 and then 2000
after that, would give them time to sort out their AD design. The company
that I was talking about has spent two years talking about AD design without
any consideration on E2K, mail is managed by a team using HP-UX and Openmail
who have never had to speak to the NT team, what are party that is!

Hackers and SPAM'er don't care about what the banner tells. I've changed
mine quite a while back and I still get NDR's from people who try to
relay via my frontend SMTP Server (a plain Win2k SMTP used to forward
all mail to the Exchange 2000 box in the internal network).

Looks to me those guys are checking which commands are returned after a
helo+help. That's IMHO the most interesting part because it returns the
SMTP verbs supported and tells much more about the SMTP Server.

 interesting post --

I wouldn't say that. Deception and misinformation has always been
used in the intelligence community as part of their security posture
 enhancement.

Yes, changing banners doesn't make you secure by fixing problems.
Bugs don't go away. But banner grabbing is often done by automated
tools, services (i.e. NetCraft), or individuals. Making it harder for
them to identify your systems does increase security posture. (I

Title: Message

I've
been using 1 for about 2 years or so, and while I haven't been to every every
state, I haven't found a place it hasn't worked during my travels. In
fact, it has worked in many places a cell phone hasn''t.

Hope
this helps

Word as email editor problem

2001-08-22 Thread John Elliott

Hi,

I have a client running Winnt Workstation SP 6a, that just decided they
wanted to use Word 2000 as their email editor. When they try to create any
email the font is huge even though it says it's like Arial 8it shows up
as something in the 40 range! If they use Outlook it's not a problem.

Any ideas?

Here's
what I saw at Blackberry's site (Link listed below):

The true power of BlackBerry is mailbox integration. BlackBerry integrates
seamlessly with a user's existing corporate email account providing a wireless
extension of their regular email mailbox. Users can read, compose, forward,
reply, delete or file messages from the palm of their hand while maintaining
their single, existing email address and mailbox.

Hackers and SPAM'er don't care about what the banner tells. I've
changed
mine quite a while back and I still get NDR's from people who try to
relay via my frontend SMTP Server (a plain Win2k SMTP used to forward
all mail to the Exchange 2000 box in the internal network).

Looks to me those guys are checking which commands are returned after
a
helo+help. That's IMHO the most interesting part because it returns
the
SMTP verbs supported and tells much more about the SMTP Server.

  All true.

I'd want to play with it just cause I can. We know more about the
 script
kiddies than they know about us. Oooo... Netcraft...

It's the hackers I'd worry about, and they could care less what your

Subject: Exchange Banner editing - Interesting Article on the
 sercurity
list - here's a summary for those who missed it

  Q:

How do you change the Exchange banner that appears when you telnet
to
 the
exchange box on port 25?? I have heard that you must hex edit a
.dll
 but
  do
not know which .dll to edit?? Anyone know??

  A:

  http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q281/2/24.asp in
e2k

Making it harder
for
them to identify your systems does increase security posture. (I
have used this on MS IIS successfully. Netcraft had listed a site as
  running Koyote web server... hehe).

Most of the rest is just noise.

  Matthew

  If

I need to set up an email that will have 2100 people who want to get

that will hold all of the email addresses. Whenever the distribution
list is created I get The distribution list has reached its maximum
size for your network email server. Only the first 165 0f 2108 have been
added.

How can I increase the number without nesting DL inside of DLs or having
multiple DLs?

Looked in TechNet and archives could not find any good answer for this
one.

Running Exchange 5.5 sp4 on WindowsNT 4 sp6a+ and Outlook 2000.

BTW, is there software which will create multiple DLs for emails in
contacts and a second contact folder?

Lyris is a nice product and have used it with other organizations. This
is a one time mailing (possibly two times over the next year) so Lyris
price wise is overkill.

We
did, because our SQL vendor is currently preparing their next release, which
will include an upgrade to Sql2000 from Sql7. If we want the new
features, and I'm sure we do, then hopefully we've saved a few bucks by paying
now for the SQL server upgrade and clients.

However, I haven't heard from the SQL vendor that we'll also need to be
on anything other than winnt and office97, and I'm hoping we don't.

Folks,
Thanks for the responses, but what I really want to know is
not when the new plan goes into effect (though that
was helpful), but what your shop's response is/will
be. Are you planning to buy the Upgrade Advantage for your
BackOffice products?

There is an exception to the rule (well maybe not an
exception, but I can't think of the right word) and
that is that the Backoffice CAL will no longer be
available after October 1st and you will need to get CAL 'Core'
packs which I believe will be more expensive.
Backoffice CAL's were the cheapest way to get EX,
SQL NT Cals together.

For occasional  mailing list type things, check out www.mailermailer.com

You don't have to configure anything
except messages and recipients since they host it for you, and it's
pretty slick how it all works.

You can have people sign up as well from a
website.

Where are
the e-mail addresses? Excel, Access, etc? I'm experiementing with

I need to
set up an email that will have 2100 people who want to get
this info. They asked to get it. I
want to create a distribution list
that will hold all of the email
addresses. Whenever the distribution
list is created I get The
distribution list has reached its maximum
size for your network email server.
Only the first 165 0f 2108 have been
added.

How can I
increase the number without nesting DL inside of DLs or having
multiple DLs?

Looked in
TechNet and archives could not find any good answer for this
one.

Running
Exchange 5.5 sp4 on WindowsNT 4 sp6a+ and Outlook 2000.

BTW, is
there software which will create multiple DLs for emails in
contacts and a second contact
folder?

I would say with your current infrastructure you will have to tell that
group no unless they want to finance a solution.
If it is a one time thing, I would out source it.

Lyris is a nice product and have used it with other organizations. This
is a one time mailing (possibly two times over the next year) so Lyris
price wise is overkill.

2001-08-22 Thread Patrick Rouse

We have a department that does this once in a while to about 1000
recipients. What I did is import their address list (excel, csv, dbf) to
a contacts folder, then address any or all of the contacts with one
message. Be sure to address using the BCC unless you want to broadcast
your list's members to everyone on the list.

Listservers a great if you do this every day, but for a once a month or so
mailing this works fine.

Also Office Resource Kit, Profile Wizard to capture setting of a

There is an exception to the rule (well maybe not an
exception, but I can't think of the right word) and
that is that the Backoffice CAL will no longer be
available after October 1st and you will need to get CAL 'Core'

Backoffice CAL's were the cheapest way to get EX,

Public Folder Permission Issues

2001-08-22 Thread ExchangeAdmin

Recently I migrated my users from exchange 5.5 to exchange 2000 using the
Move Mailbox method. My domain is native Windows 2000 and the exchange 5.5
and exchange 2000 boxes communicate via Active Directory Connectors.
Everything seems fine except that some users names show up in the client
permissions on public folders as NTUSER:domain\username rather than the
standard display name such as Joe Doe. Also, those same users that have
their name showing weird have issues accessing those public folders such as
not being able to open random messages within the public folder. If I
remove the NTUser:domain\username user and try to re-add them, I cant. I
click add like normal, choose a name from the GAL or domain user list and
click OK. Then I click OK again to leave the properties of the public
folder, go back in and see that that particular name is no longer there, but
the rest still are. I can add and remove most users at will, but once they
have that NTUSER:domain\username, you can not change permissions or they
will disappear. I get the same results whether I use outlook or Exchange
System Manager to make the permission changes. Any Ideas?

Thanks in Advance,

Danny Cahoon

  I've
worked with them while at two different companies. They were quite reasonable,

of line either, when I got defective or misshipped equipment, which was
  rarely.

  On
the other hand, I currently don't have a land line (since I have a cell phone,
and since DSL isn't available in my area, I figured it was a waste to get
one.) They wanted a lot of documentation faxed to them before they would
believe that I was who I said I was, in spite of the fact that I specified
that my credit card order had the same billing address as the shipping
address. The phone rep was a bit clueless in this case. I finally gave up and
went to another vendor, which I'd dealt with before, and had no

No it wasn't a question was it! I am guessing you want to know how to hide a

go to the global address list properties page, and click preview
double click the mailbox you want to hide
go to the Exchange Advanced tab, and you will see it there as an option
checkbox

Is it normal that the only MMC Snap in for AD Users that shows Active

the connector installed? The other DC AD Users Snap in does not show the
new, additional information. Replication is working.

Is there a component that I must install on each additional DC from which

There is an exception to the rule (well maybe not an exception, but I
can't
think of the right word) and that is that the Backoffice CAL will no
longer
be available after October 1st and you will need to get CAL 'Core'
packs
which I believe will be more expensive. Backoffice CAL's were the
cheapest
way to get EX, SQL NT Cals together.

Run Exchange2000 setup and just select the System Management tools option.

Similar to Exchange 5.*

 Hello All,
 environment:(test)
 two win2k DC's SP2 (non production environment)
one AD Connection Agreement to Exch 5.5 SP4 complete (in process of
 upgrading test domain to E2K)

Is it normal that the only MMC Snap in for AD Users that shows Active
Directory integrated Exchange info (ie email address etc) is the DC with
the connector installed? The other DC AD Users Snap in does not show the
new, additional information. Replication is working.

Is there a component that I must install on each additional DC from which
 I
want to manage ALL AD info (exchange for example)?

 Thanks

That will do it.

What if you maintain multiple address lists (yes, we do)? What if you have
2000 users and you are checking from your Win2000 Pro workstation? Could be
awhile before you get a GAL preview.

No it wasn't a question was it! I am guessing you want to know how to hide a
recipient. There may be a quicker way, but try this

go to the global address list properties page, and click preview
double click the mailbox you want to hide
go to the Exchange Advanced tab, and you will see it there as an option
checkbox

Hope that helps

I've

The
bottom line is, Microsoft's new License 6.0 program will cut off our previously

I'm still a bit fuzzy on the way that Exchange 2000 uses SMTP to

Ray,

That's what I'm getting at - are most shops buying
into Micro$oft's upgrade protection program?

Well, in one of our more clever moves, we partially bought
into the upgrade plan for SQL.

  Folks,
Thanks for the responses, but what I really want to know
is not when the new plan goes into effect (though
that was helpful), but what your shop's response
is/will be. Are you planning to buy the Upgrade Advantage for
  your BackOffice products?

There is an exception to the rule (well maybe not an
exception, but I can't think of the right word)
and that is that the Backoffice CAL will no longer be available after October 1st and you will need to get CAL
'Core' packs which I believe will be more
expensive. Backoffice CAL's were the cheapest way to get EX, SQL NT Cals together.

Title: RE: MS new licensing plan Oct 1st?

Hi People,
I've got a new machine for a very small exchange server. I basically want to
make sure the databases are consistant, stop the services on the old machine and
move the files to the new machine and restart the machine and away we go. how do
i make sure the database is consistant state? If i set the services to disabled
(all the exhange server ones) and then restart the machine it should make all
the databases in a consistant state?
it's only a very small database (less then 500mb) and i don't want to stuff
around with either tape drives. I thought about exmerge, but would be nice to
not have to recreate the mailboxes by hand.. (only 15 mailboxes).
Any thoughts?

Microsoft is also the 3rd most admired company in the
world (according to Fortune magazine)
http://www.fortune.com/indexw.jhtml?channel=artcol.jhtmldoc_id=0571

If
you are not happy with MSFT, then show them with your wallet. That's
pretty much all they understand on a macro level.
They
also have, I don't know, 80,000 employees? I'm guessing. Most of
them consider it direspectful and take references to $ signs personally.
While to some it seems they do not have a sense of humour, some of them are also
known to grace lists such as this one.

Per$onally, I think it'$ all
$illy.

and
that is a fully valid, reasonable argument. Putting a $ instead of an S
isn't.

  this one?

  http://www.computerworld.com/cwi/story/0,1199,NAV47_STO61240,00.html

  I've
gotten a boatload of announcements from Microsoft about their new plan, urging
me to lock in the upgrade advantage now, etc. etc. ...

  The
bottom line is, Microsoft's new License 6.0 program will cut off our
previously perpetual access to upgrade pricing on new versions, forcing us to
buy subscriptions if we want access to new versions without paying full
  price.

  I'm

We use www.zones.com http://www.zones.com . They are in Washington
state so that is kinda close to you. I like them a lot. Our rep is
pretty good and always gives us great prices with next day shipping.
Have used PC Connection and CDW in the past and was not that impressed.
Bad sales reps I guess.

Sorry for the OT post, but I'd like hear the general consensus about
CDW. Are they fairly priced? Adequate customer service? Prompt
shipments? etc. etc.

What's everyone's experiences with them? I've never purchased from CDW
before but a recent quote on a new exchange server is the best I've seen
yet.

  when
