RE: Guys, I really need your help with this one, I am totally baffled

2002-01-12 Thread Keith Nelson

I had this same problem just this
week.
In the Event Viewer (not sure which log,
system,application,etc..) I had a lot of errors saying that the exchange server
did not belong to the Exchange Domain Servers group. Exchange kept trying to add
the computer account to the group but failed.

What I did was reinstall SP2 and restarted
and that fixed it for me.

Last week I created 3 new user accounts, and when
prompted to create a mailbox, specified the server I wanted them on, etc. When
I looked at the properties for the user, they indicated the mailbox resides on
the server I specified. However, on the email addresses tab it was blank,
nada, nothing, and the mailboxes did not show on the store on the server, and
the users were not in the GAL. I posted this, but did not get too far.
Normally, my default recipient policy will apply about 15 SMTP addresses to
any new user or contact I create.

Today, I created about 6 new contacts in the AD, and
entered SMTP addresses for each of them. Again the email address tab for each
contact is blank, and the contact does not show in the
GAL.

Then, add to this, that sometimes my display name
appends a GDY to the end, when there are no such policies, entries on my
account properties for alias or display name.

  I
am thinking there is a problem in the AD itself, but to be fair, I moved to
Enterprise a few weeks back, and I cannot recall adding a user or contact
until now, so it may be to do with that. (But I did re-apply SP2 after the
  upgrade!)

  I
am really quite baffled (as stated), and a bit frustrated as the contacts I

RE: Exchange store dismounts unexpectedly

2002-01-12 Thread Lauro, John

I have seen this too, though not as frequently. Event messages seem
to be non existent as to when or why, although I haven't had it happen
recently, and it did definitely happen more prior to ESP1. Currently
running W2K+SP2+E2K+ESP1.

Right now, more often then the exchange store dismounting
unexpectedly, we are instead seeing the groupshield stops running for
no reason.

The only thing I did notice when either happens, is that although
restarting the store (or GS) will work, it would fail again in a
couple of days or less. Rebooting the entire server it will run for
many weeks without incident... Lately there has been enough critical
updates from Microsoft's update site that the exchange servers haven't
been up more then a month at a time anyways after we put ESP1 on
several months ago... Windows does make our Novell and Unix servers
look good with very few required updates requiring a reboot...

"This patch is intended for users with MS
Outlook 98 / 2000 and Service Pack 2, which includes a 'security fix'
(called a security feature or enhancement by Microsoft) blocking all
incoming attachments with the extensions like EXE and LNK. The problem:
you can't undo the security fix, and you won't be able to open, save or

give you control about which file extensions will be blocked, or not.
The patch will update the outllib.dll in your office folder and disable
the security on specific extensions by your choice."

   I
recently went a few rounds with Microsoft Tech Support
on the Outlook 2000 security patch which
  disallows receiving certain types of
files Their response, of course, was
that there was no way to fix it, but I
COULD upgrade to Office XP to get a

No surprise, to override a Microsoft

HOWEVER, there is another solution. A handy utility

says you cannot get. I recommend it to
anyone who has applied this patch, and
wants to get to their enclosures. You can find

Still doesn't answer the original question. Arcserve is a running joke on
this list, and yet it follows the DR Whitepapers requirements. I used BE,
with a Travan Tape drive, which sucks, but it also follows the DR Whitepaper
requirements.

Hopefully the DR Whitepaper will continue to be a "living document".

It wasn't all that long ago that Antigen wasn't exactly a recommended MS
solution, and therefore not "accepted" by a whole bunch of Exchange experts.
And now look.

Here is our validation... In the event something goes wrong and either of
us were to call PSS (god forbid), they would most likely tell us "DUDE, You
are so NOT supported".

The DR Whitepapers are pretty specific. There are many ways to backup an
Exchange server. There are right ways and there are wrong ways. However,
in order to best ensure that you are always able to recover your exchange
server without losing any email, one should follow the DR steps that MS
outlines and one should practice test restores.

I do online backups of my exchange server with NT Backup right now. Mostly
because my soon to be ex-boss uses ArcCrap to backup the network. When I
migrated them from Send Mail to Exchange I specifically noted that they will
NOT install ArcCrap on my Exchange server that I'll use plain old vanilla NT
Backup. Do I like using NT Backup, no, not really, but I am re-evaluating
our backup solution now so I can put something more reliable to me in place
that backups the entire enterprise...

Didn't want this to get into the debate it's becoming.
but:
Although people's "current" environment is being taken care of in the most
reliable manner. that's fine for right now, they've not had any problems, so
they tend to become comfortable/complacent. I respect Don's and William's

validation as to how they came to those opinions. and that's was the intent
here.

you are comfortable in your current environment, that may or may not be

or what it is going to be and she asked the question. and just because the
premier gurus' of the forum here, state it "is" or "is not" a good idea. I
just want to know why? I'm sure it's based on a lot of experience, a Lot of

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure William mentioned that... "No, I wouldn't trust
such a setup for Exchange. Other file data, perhaps. NTBackup on
Windows2000 backs up to disk."

He then provided links to various sites. It wouldn't and shouldn't be a
trusted setup. Those links give various options I would imagine. I haven't
read them nor will I as I know how I backup exchange. Which is in the most
reliable manner.

We've had problems with our Exchange store dismounting unexpectedly.
This happens quite often - sometimes two or three times a week. We are
using GroupShield anti-virus software. Other than that, we have nothing
else running on that server. Has anyone experienced this problem?
Would appreciate any thoughts or ideas we could get. Thanks.

Make sure the second domain new.com has MX records pointing to your
Exchange 2000 server, and then create a recipient policy in Exchange
System Manager for new.com. This new recipient policy should be
configured to give your users the new.com SMTP address. Make sure you
create a new recipient policy and don't modify the default one.

imho, the /3GB switch causes problems on standard Win2000 servers. Someone
sent me a MS doc talking about why you wouldn't want to run this switch on a
production box - I could probably find it if anyone is interested.

/3Gb seems to be much happier on Win2000 Advanced server though, it actually
does something.

Has anyone persuaded any version of Windows to use more than 3.1Gb of
memory?

Cheers,
Marty

Subject: /3GB switch

 Hey all,

I have a simple question: Does anyone know if running without the '/3GB'
switch in the boot.ini on an Exchange 2000 server with 2GB of RAM could
cause message delivery problems? The Virtual memory error is showing up
every hour in the event log. The Server is E2k SP1, with about 800
users.

We had a few issues with messages that got delayed in sending out to the
internet, it looks like they were getting stuck in the SMTP connector.
Thanks for any help!

Subject: Exchange store dismounts unexpectedly

We've had problems with our Exchange store dismounting unexpectedly.
This happens quite often - sometimes two or three times a week. We are
using GroupShield anti-virus software. Other than that, we have nothing
else running on that server. Has anyone experienced this problem?
Would appreciate any thoughts or ideas we could get. Thanks.
