I got the problem solved.

By adding blocking policy in the attachment and message in the registry
file.

Thank for all the responds.

I beg to differ, but NAV 2.5 was an Exchange 5.5 release. At least it was
running on ours (maybe that's why it didn't perform well G)

NAV for Exchange hasn't been MAPI based in quite a while, like 2.0 and pre

With MAPI based AV (like NAV) there is a timing gotcha. If Outlook =

may not = get a chance to look at it or clean it before Outlook drags
it down to the = PST. I

all it took was one virused attachment getting through to an =

I have a Terminated Employees mailbox that is hidden from the GAL,
that I add the SMPT address of former employees to it. I made myself
the owner of this mailbox, went into it and setup a rule to move all
incoming messages to the deleted items folder. There is apparently no
upper limit to the number of smtp addresses you can have on a mailbox.
It's really cut down the number of NDR's my administrator mailbox was
receiving by probably 90%, and cut down my frustration level by at least
that much. I used to ignore those NDR's until I just couldn't stand it
anymore and then would go on a rampage of trying to unsubscribe these
people from those mailing lists, but that doesn't always work. This is
a much more workable solution.

Incidentally, I got this idea from someone on this discussion list
several months ago. Can't remember who it was, or I would give them
credit. So, whoever sent that suggestion to this list, THANK YOU!!! It
has really been a wonderful way to manage those pesky NDR's.

Depending on the source, some of these junk mail senders never clean out

they will continue to send mail until they decide to update the list or
forever, which ever comes first. Also, the junk mailers also sell their
lists to each other so I have seen old mailboxes start receiving new
junk mail over a year after they were removed.

Exchange 5.5 and Windows 2000 Server in an NT4 Domain?

2002-04-30 Thread James Palmer

My current email server hardware is in need of replacement, so whilst
looking at alternatives, can I replace it with the following setup;
Windows 2000 Server and exchange 5.5 sp4+hotfixes? Will this work? Does the
server need to be a DC (in 2000 terms)?
All the other servers are NT4 and I am running a domain toplogy.

Thanks

RE: NAV for Exchange

2002-04-30 Thread Bob Christian

I have to add my $0.02. I now use Trend products for e-mail, both on the DMZ and on
the Exchange box. We used all NAV solutions for desktops, servers, and e-messaging
products internally a few years back. Symantec's products are pretty easy to manage
and practically manage themselves once they are setup. I love them on the user
workstations and non-database servers. We have had to cleanup after a bad definition
download a few times, but I now have all of that scripted. It literally filled up
about 1/2 of our users' hard drives. If you run into the problem, drop me a note.
That was from a 04/18/01 definitions update...but it could happen again.

Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition (NAVCE) is reliable, it works well, and
the pricing is good. The E-mail filter/relay product they had was difficult to
implement and manage, so we used McAfee WebShield SMTP on the DMZ. We talked about
going to one vendor, McAfee, and abandoning NAVCE. Our McAfee WebShield SMTP server
shutdown for no reason during the middle of the day a few weeks after that
conversation. Apparently we either got a bad definition file or our system only
partially downloaded the virus definition files. McAfee's support policy was
horrible. McAfee took 2 weeks to answer the web quesiton, refused to answer it on the
phone because we (Livewire/H.O. Systems at the time) did not buy the phone support
contract, and finally got us a patch after 3 weeks from our initial web request (and 3
subsequent requests).

We had to have a reliable solution scanning inbound/outbound on our DMZ. We needed
something easier to manage than NAV e-messaging products. Something easy to manage
like NAV desktop and server products. We tested the updated NAV product and several
of Trend's product and fell in love with Trend. We brought up our WebShield with a
patch they sent and had it up long enough for the Trend P.O. to be approved (4 hours
after the LoveLetter virus got by McAfee). At the time McAfee did not block specific
extensions and atachment types. Trend did. We had the P.O. declined once...but the
LoveLetter sealed the approval.

We went to Trend's ScanMail for Exchange on the Exchange server and Trend's InterScan
VirusWall SMTP on the DMZ. We have not had a problem since. The products both are
wonderful, the upgrades were free for 1 year, they answered questions via telephone
(unlike McAfee) both before and after the purchase, they are quick to release
definitions, etc. Symantec is also very similar in their support, but not quite near
the level of support that Trend gives. At the time we were 250 users...and they
treated us like any other customer. Trend's products reliably blocked specific
attachment types and even removed attachments types on old messages, effectively
cleaning up our message store and keeping it clean.

I deployed an updated NAV Corporate Edition on all of our non-database internal
servers and workstations. Symantec's end products are great. However, due to my past
experiences with McAfee, I did not want to standardize with one vendor.

As for my new parent corporation, I can't speak for them. These are my personal words
and experiences as a former LiveWire / H.O. Systems employee. That's my $20.00
worth...I went a bit over 2 cents!

Bob

RE: How much time should I be allowing for Exchange 5.5 SP3 ---SP4

2002-04-30 Thread Bob Christian

I had nearly 11 Gig at that time and it took me around 1/2 hour to make the upgrade,
test it, etc. I follwed the instructions from MS and had tested it on a workstation.

If you have the time and space, I would suggest setting up a test domain and Exchange
Organization/Site that mirrors yours on a few workstations/test servers and testing
it. It would also give you good experience on restoring your domain and Exchange
organization. Optionally you can create a BDC and split it off the network, remove
the old BDC from your domain and promote the mirror. Under any circumstances, NEVER
EVER ever put those machines on your network. Don't even put them on a separate
subnet/segment. It is about a 8-10 hour investment to get a workstation ghosted and 2
servers setup and restored with enough of the bells and whistles...but I did it and
was able to pass some great experience onto one of my techs as well as learn a few
things myself.

If, like most of us, time is a constraint...do the upgrade late at night when the
users are all asleep. SP3 to SP4 is pretty smooth and does not take a lot of time.

On one of our test OWA servers, if receive a meeting request I cannot click the accept, decline, or tentative buttons. Doing so results in an IE popup that states unable to perform the operation. I originally experienced this problem on another test OWA server that has IISLockDown installed, but this test server doesn't have that loaded yet, so something else is wrong.

Any ideas? Thanks.

An exchange 2000/5.5
server is not a good solution for mail bombing or mass mailing to thousands of
people because there is no immediate tie in. My political response would be,
our server equipment is not designed to handle this situation. Wait until
someone says to find out the cost. Then go get a 10k price for lyris, a 3yr t1
contract for the bandwidth, a 12k ibm server and see what they say. Worst case
you have a nice new pipe and server to play with

Changing site name on backup server

2002-04-30 Thread David McSpadden

I have a newer (backup) server. I messed up
when I loaded Exchange 5.5 and sp4. I am looking to change the site name
on this new server to match my existing server. I want to do this again
once all my accounts are migrated to the new server. The original install
was about 6 years ago and the site, organization, and some of the configuration
is a little off. So my question is how to change the site name on the new
server to match the old server without a reinstall. Once the server move
is complete how do I change the site information to something that is reasonable
to our organization now.
I am on NT 4.0 sp6a stand alone servers in a mixed
environment.

You'll have to allow relaying from the second server on the first server's
IMC. Also, depending on your network topology, you may want to try adding
an LMHOST entry for the other server on each Exchange machine. It
_shouldn't_ be necessary, esp. if using WINS, but it could be worth a look.

Also, have you allowed sufficient time for replication to occur, or forced a
Directory Synch?

Ok that's great,

I've got a server built to that spec with NT4/exchange installed patched and
Joined to the existing site now.

If I now use the Mailbox move function within exchange admin I can move a
mailbox (mine) to the new server, connect using outlook and all looks well.
I can send an email to somebody homed on the 1st server in the site BUT he
can't send back to me!! Nor do I get email from the internet

I installed the second server in the site using the default exchange 5.5
install join site options

Are there any changes I need to make to the 1st server to allow email to
flow to the second server?

Thanks for any help offered (including URL links to doing this with Exchange

Each server requires it's own DB and logs. IMS can be shared out of a
single server.

IIRC, the preferred configuration (if you have the disks) is Mirrored Logs
and OS partition and Raid 5 Database partition. However, a straight RAID 5
wil work (might not be optimal, but it will work)

I have an Ex5.5 SP4 server running on a NT4.0 SP6 server to the following
spec

Dual PIII 800 processors
2GB RAM

O/S Raid 1
Logs Raid 1
Databases Raid 5

750 users

For many reasons I now need to add a second server to the site to carry some
additional mailbox's

My question is with the second server can I run a single Raid 5 array with
O/S and databases on it with the logs and IMS etc remaining on the 1st
server or does the second server in a site need the logs etc.

It's a no brainer in 5.5. You install the IMC for the site on a server in
the site and all mailboxes in the site, regardless of which server they
reside on, can utilize this connector.

Forcing an MX record

2002-04-30 Thread Bruce Fyfe

I have a situation where my Exchange server does a DNS query for a
particular domain. The domain in question has three MX records listed,
two of which are not valid. The first record in the set in the valid
one but my Exchange box is taking the third one. I suspect this has to
do with the weight of the listing in DNS. Since I have been unable to
get a response from the admin of the recipient domain to fix the problem
I wanted to statically map a record for this one particular server. I
tried the HOSTS file and entering a record into my internal DNS but no
luck. Any ideas there?

Try a static route to a gateway which doesn't exist for the MX hosts which aren't
working correctly. That should allow the mail sender to skip that host and move on to
the next.

Actually, it said $10 per email for both sending and RECEIVING
spam. Here's the excerpt.

If I violate this agreement I subject myself
to legal action and will be held financially responsible for every piece of spam
that goes into or out of MyRealBox.com at the amount of $10 for every piece of
spam.

Your quote does not
reflect the onlineterms of service. Hereare the actual TOS
passages:

You agree to pay Novell ten dollars ($10 USD) for EACH
E-mail sent that violates these Terms of Service and/or the SPAM policy.

The SPAM policy
states that it applies to sent mail or inbound mail as a result of a mailbox
used to gather responses to spam:

Sending spam E-mail from a MyRealBox address
or using a MyRealBox address as a return address or an opt-out address for spam
is in violation of the terms and conditions by which we operate, and users found
in violation of the policy will have their account terminated. Additionally we
will pursue legal actions against any person violating our terms and
conditions.

So from what did you
excerpt your quote?

And how does
myrealbox.com stay in business?

Carl

MyRealBox is superior.
I hope this list doesn't mind that it is over 100k users on NW6 and NIMS. At one
point in time they had it on a single (as in ONE) server for demo purposes with the
same userbase. It rocks.

OK, I can't seem to find my bookmark for the Swynk.com Exchange 5.5 FAQ.
I
start out at http://www.swynk.com/exchange/

and cannot find the FAQ for the life of me. Can someone provide me:

a) The clicks I need to perform to find this FAQ without searching
really hard
b) The URL to the FAQ :-)

Thanks a lot,

There is a DLL file that goes with the .exe that you need. Make sure you
have it.

Exchange 2000 Creating E-mail Accounts

2002-04-30 Thread trsmith
Title: Exchange 2000 Creating E-mail Accounts

Hello All,

I have a question for the masses. We are in the process of creating a E2K server for our students, but we don't want to create a whole bunch of accounts that the students do not want. So we decided on E-mail on demand. Now so that we don't have to sit and create bulk accounts every day, we were wondering if there is way for the students to create there own e-mail accounts from the web. (sorta like hotmail). Does anybody have any ideas or now of any third party utilities that can help?

Thanks in advance

second Internet domain

2002-04-30 Thread Allen Crawford

Ok, I've been doing my homework on setting up a second Internet domain for
our Exchange 5.5 SP4 server. It didn't work exactly as I was expecting, but
I believe things are working correctly. All I did was add the second domain
to the routing tab in the IMC and routed it to our original domain. Now I
can use username@either_domain mailto:username@either_domain and it works
great.

Now, from what I have read, no SMTP addresses will automatically get
generated for the users, they still just have the original address. This is
the part I wasn't expecting. I was thinking that I could go to the Site
Addressing section and add a second SMTP address. However, that doesn't
appear to be possible.

So, my first question is, say I wanted to change everyone's main address to
the new domain. Would I make the new domain route to inbound and have the
old domain route to the new one and then modify the Site Addressing section
so that the SMTP address is now @new_domain? This is just hypothetical and
probably won't ever happen, but I'm trying to learn some new stuff. I'm
assuming that if you update the SMTP address under Site Addressing it will
then update all the mailboxes, please let me know if this assumption is
incorrect.

Finally, my last question, which isn't really related to two domains. If I
wanted our employees to have email addresses like
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] AND
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] , how
would I go about it? I was thinking I could set it up in the Site
Addressing section for one of the naming schemes, but how would I add a
second one? Our parent company does this but they are running Notes/Domino,
not Exchange.

Thanks for the help,
Allen

Ok everyone here is talking about the 16GB limit on regular 5.5, but all the
docs I can find from Microsoft don't seem to differencate between 5.5 and
5.5 enterprise. I was always under the impression that regualar 5.5 had the
16GB limit, and Eneterprise got rid of it.

Am I right?
If not what is the limit in regualr 5.5?
