In the general case, can you access Exchange across a VPN without
hitting any public IP address or DNS records? Yes. Will that work
for your specific environment? Insufficient data.

Our Exchange server has a private IP address (RFC-1918 range) and a
private domain name (not delegated from public DNS). It has no public
IP or DNS. Mail comes in to a bastion host and is relayed to Exchange
from there. Our VPN clients connect, get told to use our internal DNS
server, query the private name of the Exchange server, and connect to
the private IP address.

in it. I don't know if I should tell customers to upgrade because it will fix
the ActiveSync issue, or to wait and not upgrade because it will break the

All the hate 'in. MS does some things very well. No argument from me
about not being perfect. They do, do some things very well. The most
important, being as agile as they are for the size of the org. The process for
identifying bugs and addressing them is outstanding! MS normally knows about
problems in Exchange long before they show up on the street. No company no
matter what they do can have ESP with their products, regardless of what they
may be. In many cases you have to have the product on the street before you
can find all the problems with a release. As far as MS and Exchange go, MS has
the largest Exchange deployment in the world, bar none. They're able to test
extensively in house before anything goes to the public and then goes public
internally before it goes to the street. Very few knee jerks.
As for Iphones, as they started landing in the hands of customers, we started
seeing CAS issues. A crack team of forensic engineers was on the problem
immediately. Unfortunately there was a lot of band aiding and massaging going
on till Apple came out with the patch. If a component is not broken you can't
fix it. It's also very hard to design a product that will be compatible with
all future 3rd party products no matter what they may be. It's just not
possible. Still no ESP.

Congrats Alex. I wish you guys all the best. I've been involved in a lot
of M&A activities over the past 3-4 years, I know how much work is involved.
I also know how painful it can be if mishandled - and how enlightening it
can be if done well.

I plan to make my return to Tech-Ed next year after missing the past 3.

I know it is probably way off of anyone's list right now, but do you know if
there will there be a combined GFI/Sunbelt booth? Sunbelt always had a big
buzz around it's booth. I still fondly remember crowds of people screaming
"Knock Spam Out!", and I believe somewhere I still have an "I Hate Spam"
t-shirt signed by Stu. On the other hand, GFI always seemed to be just
another table with free pens. :)

RE: E2007 on Win 2008 R2

2010-07-15 Thread Michael B. Smith
When you download SP3, it's a full-fledged installer.

SP1 and SP2 are blocked against installing on 2008 R2. RTM isn't, but it
doesn't install properly.

You'll need to use the SP3 download.

I've got an E2007 install coming up, as we're replacing our current system with
new hardware. The new box is licensed for 2008 R2.

I know that E2007 wasn't supported on 2008 R2 until SP3. What I don't know is
if this is now just a normal install, or if there are problems or special
procedures during installation.

Has anyone tried this?

As a fallback I could always use Server 2003.

Most likely it's SBCGlobal doing something. I've had numerous issues with
them in the past, and it's nearly impossible to get it straightened out. By
the time you get it working for a while, it will start all over again.
Check with the customer to see if she has an alternative email address to
send to, and advise her that she needs to contact SBCGlobal about this.

Very interesting. I did not even know that this existed. What is your goal
for how this will work? Will the user log onto a Shibboleth SSO with their
credentials and then one of their options will be to use Outlook Web Access;
SSO would automatically pass their credentials to Outlook Web Access?

I'm sure that is a good question. Unfortunately, I don't know for
absolute surety that it is the new mailbox.
He told me it was but I did not verify.
He also says he has the desktop manager software at home, but has not
synced in quite a while.
I'll be waiting for him to do the home desktop sync before I do any more
tests as I don't want to wipe out all his data already on the device.
We only have 4 BB users and the other three were new devices when we
added them to our server so I've not been through this process before.
Thanks for all the advice folks.

I know this is strictly a BB question but since I'm pretty sure some of
your support those, surely someone will know the answer here.
We have a new president at the college. He came from another college
and brought his personal BB.
I added him to our BB Professional 4.1.4.3 server.
He received the activation email in his Outlook account.
Entered the info into his handheld. Mail now works, both sending and
receiving to and from the handheld, or so he says.
No calendar or contacts are being synced.
Also, the server still shows his account as Initializing.
Does this sound like maybe his device is still attached to his previous
employer's system?

On a related note, one of our VPs just moved to another college as their
president.
He also has a BB and we need to make sure the transition from our system
to the new college is smooth.
Do I just delete him from our BB server and then let the new college
admin add him to their server?
I've been googling and looking around on crackberry.com but not finding
any relevant info.
Thanks.
Glen.

2010-07-15 Thread Sobey, Richard A
In that respect, you don't even need to delete him from your BES. When he
activates on his new BES, he will get new Service Books etc, and your BES will
simply lose track of it. Obviosuly, delete him because he's left, but you don't
have to do that as a pre-requisite :)

Will that erase the contacts, calendar and existing email on the
handheld?

Do a security wipe of any device that has been on a previous system,
it's the best solution we've come across.

Thanks.
Glen.

Re: Letter from Sunbelt CEO: GFI Acquires Sunbelt Software

2010-07-15 Thread Graeme Carstairs
HI there,

We use HoundDog to support and monitor our clients servers and sites, this
was recently bough by GFI, and rebranded GFI-MAX.

As we are a reseller it was bought direct from HoundDog/GFI and
we haven't seen any change since the buyout but that's was only a few months
ago. The one change has been we no longer get the cute doggy e-mails.

We have dabbled with Sunbelt products for a few years, through I hate SPAM,
CouterSpy and Ninja. It was an alternative to our main products in these
spaces.

We recently moved fully to Vipre once Trend let us down and costs us
significant time and money, fixing issues caused by Version 6 of their SMB
product.

We bought through Interactive Ideas in the UK and they have been
very helpful to us and provided lots of leads.

Now its all change again, all I can say is I hope we get a distributor who
is as proactive as interactive Ideas was, and also that I hope that Vipre is
Symantecified by GFI.

I really do not want to have to go back to our customers and tell them they
need to change AV suppliers again.

Apart from my worries, can I just say Congrats to Sunbelt it was only a
matter of time before someone with bigger pockets came along, and I am so
glad it wasnt Symantec, McAfee or CA.

Well done guys, and keep GFI right.

Graeme
