Except that in 2010 you have a limit of 10 device associations. I am guessing
that you would just do a powershell to wipe the associations if you have the
page disabled from view in OWA?

RE: Mac & Entourage vs. Ex2K3

2011-02-23 Thread David Florea
2K3 on 32-bit SBS2003. Here's what the NDR says:

From:
Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2011 17:35:31 -0800
To: Craig Rosenthal
Subject: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

   jten...@distantdomain.com

That's all, no code, no nothing. In msg tracking, the NDR line shows up almost
right away, and I'm assuming it's some kind of internal snafu. But this user
is constantly complaining of stuff like this, and he's the only Mac user I
have. I suspect somehow his mail client is hosing the process, just don't know
how.

I'll look at the SMTP logs closer in the morning.

Thanks.

Regardless, I'd see if I could find the SMTP logs - perhaps turn up
the SMTP logging a bit and see if the conversation is captured.

And, what exactly does the NDR say?

Mac & Entourage vs. Ex2K3

2011-02-23 Thread David Florea
Trying to figure out why one remote user (the only one using Mac/Entourage,
of course) can't send mail to one domain. He receives NDRs, but with no
explanation, no SMTP code, not even a hint about which server hacked it back
up. From the same mail server, I send emails to that domain just fine.
Here's what I know:

1. Our server is not on any RBL lists.
2. Message tracking shows the email was sent; the last 3 lines are:
Message Routed and Queued for Remote Delivery
Started outbound transfer of message
Non-delivered Report (NDR) Generated
3. There is no further indication of what the error was.
4. I know little to nothing about Entourage.
5. Our server has an SPF record.

Anyone be able to tell me what direction to look to try and resolve that?

Thanks,

RE: Getting Exch 2010 visible on the outside

2011-02-23 Thread Sean Rector
Michael, et al,

Would this method work for publishing my Exchange 2010 organization with
a single public IP on the ISA firewall?

http://www.isaserver.org/tutorials/2004pubowamobile.html

Excerpt:

1. The external host sends a request to
http://owa.msfirewall.org/exchange. The name owa.msfirewall.org resolves
to the IP address on the external interface of the ISA Server 2004
firewall that the Web listener is configured to use. In this example,
the External listener is listening on socket 192.168.1.70 TCP 443. This
listener does not require users to authenticate and does not prompt
users for credentials. This listener accepts the incoming request.
2. A Web Publishing Rule is created that uses the External
listener. The Web Publishing Rule is configured to forward incoming
requests to owa.msfirewall.org to localhost. The connection is forwarded
to the localhost and the listener configured on the localhost network is
configured to use forms-based authentication. Because the listener is
configured to use forms-based authentication, it generates a form and
sends that form to the user.
3. The user fills in the username and password information in the
form and sends it to the ISA Server 2004 firewall. The firewall accepts
the credentials on the External listener, and then Web Publishing Rule
using the External listener forwards the credentials to the localhost
listener. Because the localhost listener uses forms-based
authentication, it forwards the user credentials to the OWA Web site.
When the user is authenticated, the connection request is forwarded to
the OWA Web site on the internal network.
4. Users who need to access Web sites that are not the OWA Web site
can also connect to the External listeners. For example, suppose the
user wants to connect to the site, https://owa.msfirewall.org/oma. In
this case, the External listener is configured with Basic
authentication.
5. The connection for the owa.msfirewall.org/oma is forwarded to
the Exchange Server based on a Web Publishing Rule that is configured to
forward the connection to the OMA Web site on the Exchange Server on the
Internal network. This Web Publishing Rule can also be configured to
delegate authentication, so that the connection request is authenticated
before it is forwarded to the OMA site on the internal network. Note in
this example, the Web Publishing Rule used for the OMA site does not
forward the request to the listener configured on the localhost network
because OMA clients cannot use the forms-based authentication method.

Subject: Getting Exch 2010 visible on the outside

Hello All,

I'll admit it - I'm having trouble fully understanding how to get this
set up for outside access - via Autodiscover/VPN/EAS. I mean, I
understand what's necessary, just not how to configure all the pieces
for our configuration.

Current Configuration:

WAN connection to Router (single outside IP, but can put multiple on
interface)

Router to ISA 2006 Server (single inside IP on router (again, can either
connect additional inside interface or add a secondary IP to existing
inside interface), standard dual-homed configuration on ISA server)

ISA server does not use FBA - simple pass-through on HTTPS to Exchange
2003 server where the logon dialog pops up (the old, ugly way of logging
on)

Inside the firewall, one other website is hosted - on port 80 only, but
ISA Server rule for publishing it uses the same listener as Exchange
publishing rule.

The listener uses a wildcard certificate from Comodo - that is
cross-mapped to the SSL cert from our DC on the Exchange server, so it
comes up as trusted.

Exchange 2003 server does not use FBA (see above).

Exchange OWA website requires NTLM authentication, hence the pop-up for
credentials.

EAS works flawlessly.

I know that I need to set up FBA on the 2003 server 1st. When I tried
to set it up months ago, I ran into the problem of it breaking EAS. The
guides for ISA seem to presume that ISA is directly attached to the
internet, without a router between.

Of course, any further info you need, I'll send out...

Your guidance would be greatly appreciated!

I recently saved some of the online sections as PDFs for reading on a Kindle -
works well when travelling by train, etc, and I guess you could always print
those. But I know what you mean; I prefer printed material sometimes.

Also, I've found that the online content is obviously updated more regularly
then the downloadable CHM file, but the PackageThis.exe program works just
great to create smaller CHM files of the relevant sections directly from
TechNet content.

RE: Exchange 2010 Technical Reference Guide?

2011-02-23 Thread Neil Hobson
I recently saved some of the online sections as PDFs for reading on a Kindle
- works well when travelling by train, etc, and I guess you could always
print those. But I know what you mean; I prefer printed material sometimes.

Also, I've found that the online content is obviously updated more regularly
then the downloadable CHM file, but the PackageThis.exe program works just
great to create smaller CHM files of the relevant sections directly from
TechNet content.

Microsoft had released an oustanding documentation for Exchange 2003 called

I have an Exchange 2003 organization with 2 admin groups (back from the

you had 2 sites and a slow link).

We now have plenty of bandwidth between the sites, and in a month or so
I need to begin moving us to Exchange 2010.

Where I want to be is with their site gone and their mail on the mail
server used at our main site - with their increased bandwidth and
Outlook 2003 upwards and cached mode this shouldn't be an issue.

When's the best time and what's the best approach to start moving them
onto our server?

The Exchange 2003 org is native so I guess what I'm asking is should I
move their mailboxes now and look at getting rid of their Exchange
server before I reach for the 2010 disc, or should I wait until I've
introduced an Exchange 2010 server?

I'm a bit unclear on the whole "clean-up" process as well since I'll
have an Administrative Group with no servers in it.

2010 IMAP Issues

2011-02-23 Thread Young, Darren
We've been having some issues with 2010 IMAP (SP1). In production we have 3
physical machines, all are Dell R610's with 48GB RAM and 2 sockets/8 cores each
running ESX 4i. Each host has 1 (total of 3) 64-bit 2008 EE VM's with 4 vCPU's
and 12 GB RAM running CAS & HT roles. Additionally, each host has 1 (total of
3) 64-bit 2008 EE VM's with 4 vCPU's and 32GB RAM running mailbox roles. Total
of 9 mailbox stores, 3 on each mailbox VM's.

Our 2003 environment is still operational as we're still migrating users to
2010. Some of the users going through the 2010 IMAP instance have 2003
mailboxes; in fact, most of the Faculty are still homeMDB'd on 2003.

Sitting in front of the CAS machines are a pair of F5 LTM's (10.x software)
that host the IMAP 993 instance, we don't support customer facing non-SSL IMAP
(port 143). I configured the F5 virtuals based on F5's Exchange 2010 design
guide and they're really quite basic. The pool behind the F5 virtual points to
port 143 on each of the CAS systems. SSL certificate is installed on the F5 and
attached to the 993 IMAP virtual.

We essentially support any IMAP client but the majority of them are Apple
clients and mobile devices that don't support ActiveSync. I also know a good
amount of Faculty run Thunderbird remotely.

The IMAP4 process on any of the CAS systems will run using 600MB or so RAM but
will rise to perhaps 1.1-1.2GB resident size. We have monitors in place to
watch the banner string returned by port 143 on each of the CAS hosts as well
as 993 on the F5 interface.

At times we receive alerts with no banner string returned by 143 on one or more
of the CAS hosts and when I manually telnet to that port it connects but
receive no banner. If I leave that telnet connection open sometimes it will
eventually return the IMAP banner and sometimes it just times out. Sometimes it
appears to "recover" itself yet at other times we have to restart the IMAP
service to kick it into working again. One of our other admins has noticed that
this seems to happen when the size of the process reaches a larger resident
size, somewhere in the 1.2GB range. No proof on that though, just an
observation.

There's no apparent rhyme or reason as to when or why this happens, could be
1:00 in the afternoon or 2:00 in the morning. We had this problem with the RTM
version and it was causing so many problems we moved the IMAP DNS name back to
the 2003 front-ends. I ran the Exchange load generator against 2010's IMAP
after we installed SP1 and never had an issue. Now it's back.

Prior to SP1 we phoned Microsoft when this was occurring and they had me watch
the process for any crash information. As I told them, it never actually
"crashed", it simply stopped processing client requests and sometimes would
recover, and other times would not. Since it was not a "production down
emergency" they wanted us to pay for escalation to perform root cause analysis.
At the time we were receiving intense pressure from Faculty to make it stable
which is why we pointed the IMAP DNS name back to the 2003 F5 front-end
interface. Exchange 2003 IMAP has no issues.

Anyone have any thoughts? We're sort of at our wits end with this and I don't
believe a new call to MS will yield better results.

I've never seen Exchange cause this. What is sitting in front of Exchange?

An "empty envelope" is when a SMTP conversation is either missing a "MAIL

Thanks,

RE: Merging one Admin Group into another (Exchange 2003)?

2011-02-23 Thread Paul Hutchings
Can I hide them from the EMC? I don't mind the cruft left in AD but
it's so annoying having these things visible.

When you say "do it as part of the Exchange migration", at what point
would you suggest, or you mean once there's a 2010 server in the
organization and move them to that?

Just do it as part of the Exchange migration. It will be simpler.

Oh, and when you are done, you'll have TWO AGs with no servers in them.
J BUT DON'T DELETE THEM!

Subject: Merging one Admin Group into another (Exchange 2003)?

I have an Exchange 2003 organization with 2 admin groups (back from the
good old days when 5.5 pretty much insisted on having 2 admin groups if
you had 2 sites and a slow link).

Thanks,

Paul

RE: Exchange 2010 Technical Reference Guide?

2011-02-23 Thread Michael B. Smith
You are preaching to the choir.

The Exchange Team considers me (plus several other of we "more mature" MVPs) a
luddite because I like printed material.

studying an learning because it requires you to be at a computer and online to
access the material.

Hi fellows,

Microsoft had released an oustanding documentation for Exchange 2003 called
Exchange 2003 Technical Reference guide available there:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996429(EXCHG.65).aspx

Is there a chance the same document exist for Exchange 2010?
